Abstract:Lanthanides, scandium and yttrium are 17 elements that are collectively known as rare earth elements. The optical, magnetic, and electrical structures of rare earth elements are unique. It has broad applications in high technology, new materials, and new energy. It is a crucial component that is required for industrial production. The majority of rare earth elements are present in various minerals, such as mixed rare earth ores, common bastnaesite, and monazite. Their traditional extraction processes mainly include concentrated sulfuric acid roasting, caustic soda decomposition and soda ash decomposition. In addition to issues with high costs and strict criteria for raw material grade, the secondary wastes they produce cause varying degrees of environmental harm. The process of producing rare earth elements mainly includes precipitation, hydrothermal processes, sol-gel processes, and spray pyrolysis processes. High cost and high energy use are prevalent issues. Finding an effective recovery and clean manufacturing method for rare earth ores is especially crucial given the significance of rare earth resources and sustainable industrial development. In this paper, we review the principles and application status of existing processes from two perspectives, namely, the extraction of transmitted rare earths and the preparation of rare earth products. Based on the existing research, we propose a new technology for the electrochemical conversion of chlorinated rare earths and rare earth chlorine and analyze its feasibility from a technical perspective.
