Abstract:The chemical synthesis of organic molecules involves, at its very essence, the creation of carbon–carbon bonds. In this context, the aldol reaction is among the most important synthetic methods, and a wide variety of catalytic and stereoselective versions have been reported. However, aldolizations yielding tertiary aldols, which result from the reaction of an enolate with a ketone, are challenging and only a few catalytic asymmetric Mukaiyama aldol reactions with ketones as electrophiles have been described. These methods typically require relatively high catalyst loadings, deliver substandard enantioselectivity or need special reagents or additives. We now report extremely potent catalysts that readily enable the reaction of silyl ketene acetals with a diverse set of ketones to furnish the corresponding tertiary aldol products in excellent yields and enantioselectivities. Parts per million (ppm) levels of catalyst loadings can be routinely used and provide fast and quantitative product formation in high enantiopurity. In situ spectroscopic studies and acidity measurements suggest a silylium ion based, asymmetric counteranion-directed Lewis acid catalysis mechanism.

Abstract:The novel carbon-based acid catalyst has been applied to catalyzing the acetalization and ketalization. The results showed that the catalyst was very efficient with the average yield over 93%. The novel heterogeneous catalyst has the advantages of high activity, wide applicability even to 7-membered ring acetals, strikingly simple workup procedure, non-pollution, and reusability, which will contribute to the green process greatly.

Abstract:With the gradual depletion of petroleum resources, the one-step synthesis of acrylic acid/ methyl acrylate from acetic acid/methyl acetate and formaldehyde via aldol reaction, instead of propylene selective oxidation, has stimulated researchers' interest. Current research in this field focus on catalyst modification, structure–activity relationships, catalytic mechanism and kinetics, and separation process design. The faced challenging problems are efficient catalyst development, mechanism-based kinetics calculation for reactor design and separation process optimization, which hinder the industrial progress, although great efforts have been made in the last decades. Therefore, it is necessary and meaningful to review the achievements as the basis for the further exploration and application in this area. This review aims to systematically summarize and analyze the catalytic performance and structure–activity relationships of developed catalysts, catalytic mechanism and kinetics, and separation process design, as well as suggest the prospective research.

Abstract:A series of poly(2-oxazoline) (POX) derivatives bearing prolinamide pendants were designed as organocatalysts and evaluated in the direct asymmetric aldol reaction between aromatic aldehydes and cyclic ketones. The structural variation of the alkyl spacer connecting the polymer backbone with the catalytic unit was applied so as to deduce structure–performance relationships combined with comparable experiments from model catalysts. Results showed that the POX-bound prolinamides can promote the aldol reaction more effectively as compared to their small-molecular and non-POX-bound analogs. The catalyst P3 containing the pyrrolidine moiety closer to the tertiary amide backbone exhibited the overall best catalytic efficiency, affording anti-products in 84% yield with 89% ee in the representative aldol addition of cyclohexanone to 4-nitrobenzaldehyde at a 10 mol.% catalyst loading. Furthermore, the influence of trifluoroacetic acid as an additive on the asymmetric transformation was investigated. Theoretical calculations revealed that the protonation of the aldehyde carbonyl group switched the activation mode of the aldol acceptor through hydrogen bond interactions, thereby changing the relative energy barrier of the enamine/aldehyde reaction transition states, which accounted well for the significant improvement in the enantioselectivity of the acidic additives observed experimentally.

Abstract:A novel homogeneous copolymer catalyst was synthesized via single step radical copolymerization and developed for the aldol reaction. It was demonstrated that the catalyst possessed excellent activity and stereoselectivity. The secondary structure of the copolymer catalyst was evaluated by circular dichroism. Furthermore, the catalyst was readily recovered without loss of conversion and stereoselectivity even after ten cycles.

Abstract:Aldol condensation is a very useful reaction for biomass upgrading by coupling small molecule platform compounds into high value-added products. Here we choose acetaldehyde (AcH) condensation, the rate-determining step in bioethanol transformations, as a targeted reaction, and prepared four CeO2 catalysts with different concentrations of surface oxygen vacancies to investigate the role of oxygen vacancies in this reaction. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to demonstrate that there is a linear correlation between the activity of aldol condensation and the concentration of oxygen vacancies. Based on in-situ FTIR studies, we conclude that oxygen vacancies are the Lewis acid sites for activation and stabilization of AcH, while lattice oxygen act as base sites for the formation of enolate species which are the key intermediates for AcH coupling reactions. Moreover, the proposed reaction mechanism indicates that Ce cations which are weak Lewis acid sites are not involved in the AcH condensation.

Abstract:A novel carbon-based strong acid catalyst, methylnaphthalenesulfonic acid - formaldehyde condensate, has been synthesized successfully. The catalytic activity for acetalization and ketalization at room temperature under solvent-free condition was investigated. The results showed that the novel catalyst was very efficient for the reaction. Also the novel heterogeneous catalyst owned the advantages of high activity, wide applicability, strikingly simple work-up procedure, non-pollution, stability and reusability, which made the catalyst hold great potential for the "green process".

Abstract:In the last few years, the research area of chiral β-aminophosphines capable of promoting a wide range of diverse organic transformations has attracted more attention. Their derivatives constitute attractive reagents towards this end, due to their stability, low toxicity and ease of handling. These novel β-aminophosphine derivatives are potentially useful as organocatalysts and ligands in metal-catalysed reactions. In particular, chiral β-aminophosphines have recently emerged as powerful phosphine catalysts in asymmetric synthesis and catalysis. The asymmetric transformations to which metal complexes of these ligands have been applied include palladium-catalysed allylic substitutions and copper-catalysed 1,4-additions to enones among others. This review summarizes the most significant developments in the area of synthesis and application of chiral β-aminophosphine derivatives, providing a detailed overview of the current state of the art and including future aspects.

Abstract:Vapor phase aldol condensation of methyl acetate with formaldehyde was first studied over Al2O3 with different calcination temperatures and Al2O3-supported barium with different amounts of barium catalysts. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, N2 adsorption–desorption, the pyridine absorption performed via Fourier transform infrared spectroscope, NH3 and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption. The results indicated that the calcination temperature affected the strength and the number of surface acid and base sites over the alumina catalysts. In addition, the moderate Lewis acid and weak base sites were critical to promote this aldol condensation reaction. Adding barium species, which could effectively modified the acid–base properties of Al2O3, clearly improved the catalytic activity and selectivity. The stability and regeneration of the optimum catalyst were also investigated and did not exhibit an obvious decrease in efficiency.Graphical AbstractAl2O3-supported barium catalyst was found to be an effective catalyst for vapor phase aldol condensation of methyl acetate with formaldehyde as a result of the appropriate intensity of acid and base.

Abstract:A series of acid–base bifunctional catalysts were prepared, and high yields and excellent selectivity in the aldol condensation were achieved through adjustment of the matching between the acid and the base. The results indicated that proper matching between the acid and the base can both efficiently activate the substrate through cooperative activation and inhibit dehydration without diminishing the yield.

Abstract:The nanocomposites formed by SO3H-hollow-nanospheres and chiral amines are highly efficient catalysts for the direct asymmetric aldol reaction of cyclohexanone and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde. The catalyst showed 91% yield with 96% ee under optimized reaction conditions. SO3H-hollow-nanospheres were synthesized by oxidation of thiol-hollow-nanospheres, which were fabricated through a one-pot co-condensation of 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyl) ethane and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane around F127 micelles in the presence of NaOAc. Chiral amines could be combined with SO3H-hollow-nanospheres through facile electrostatic interactions. The obtained nanocomposites showed a much higher reaction rate than the catalyst formed from the combination of chiral amine and SO3H-mesoporous-organosilica (ribbon shaped particles with particle size of tens of micrometres) in the direct asymmetric aldol reaction. This is mainly attributed to the hollow spherical morphology and nano-scale particle size (16-20 nm) of the SO3H-hollow-nanospheres.

Abstract:A series of C-3-symmetric triprolinamide catalysts based on triphenyl- and tribenzylphosphine oxide has been developed to catalyze the direct asymmetric aldol reaction of aromatic aldehydes and cyclohexanone. Under the optimal conditions, high isolated yield (up to 96%), diastereoselectivities (up to 88:12) and enantioselectivities (up to 97%) were obtained.

Abstract:Asymmetric metal/organo relay catalysis, utilizing a metal complex and a chiral organocatalyst in a one-pot cascade reaction, is aimed to sequentially impart activation on multiple steps by distinct catalysts. Such a catalysis merges the advantages of both metal catalysis and organocatalysis, providing step-economy, and, more importantly, the potential to achieve inaccessible reactivity by a single catalyst. Chiral phosphoric acids are among the most robust organocatalysts, rendering a broad range of enantioselective bond-forming reactions. The combination of metal complexes and chiral phosphoric acids in a single vessel has been well documented. In particular, the asymmetric relay catalysis of metal complex with chiral phosphoric acid has grown rapidly since 2008. Several excellent reviews have been published to cover almost all examples in this area from 2008 to early 2014; therefore, in this chapter, we will mainly highlight progress from 2014 to mid-2019.
Insights on Active Sites of CaAl-Hydrotalcite As a High-Performance Solid Base Catalyst Toward Aldol Condensation

Abstract:Solid base catalysts are highly demanded in many heterogeneous catalysis processes, but insights on active sites and structure-property correlation have rarely been revealed and remain a challenge. Herein, activated MxAl-layered double hydroxides (denoted as re-MxAl-LDH, M = Ca, Mg), as solid base catalysts toward the aldol condensation reaction, were prepared via a two-step procedure: calcination of the MxAl-LDH precursor to produce MxAl-mixed metal oxide (MxAl-MMO), followed by a further rehydration treatment. Structural characterizations confirm that re-CaxAl-LDH and re-MgxAl-LDH show similar morphology, particle size, specific surface area, and pore size distribution. However, a combination study including XPS, EXAFS, CDCl3-FTIR, and DFT calculations verifies that the host layer of re-CaxAl-LDH contains a distorted Ca(OH)(6) octahedron with an additional Ca-OH coordination that provides weak Bronsted basic site; in contrast, re-MgxAl-LDH consists of a Mg(OH)(6) octahedron structure accompanied by surface adsorbed hydroxyl group via noncovalent interaction, resulting in a medium Bronsted basic site. For the re-CaxAl-LDH samples, the concentration of weak Bronsted basic sites can be enhanced by tuning the Ca/Al molar ratio in the LDH precursor. The optimized re-CaxAl-LDH catalyst (re-Ca4Al-LDH) exhibits prominent catalytic performance toward the condensation of isobutyraldehyde (IBD) and formaldehyde (FA) to produce hydroxypivaldehyde (HPA), with a HPA yield of 61.5%. This is much higher than that of re-MgxAl-LDH (12.2%) and conventional solid base catalysts (4-33%), and even comparable to the level of liquid alkali (55-72%). Studies on the structure-property correlation reveal that the weak Bronsted basic site serves as active center to catalyze the aldol condensation, which accelerates the product desorption and largely promotes the HPA selectivity.

Abstract:Vapor phase aldol condensation of acetaldehyde on silica supported alkali metal containing solid bases, silica supported tungsten and molybdenum oxides and other unsupported oxides were studied. It was found that silica supported alkali metal containing solid base catalysts can effectively catalyze the aldol condensation of acetaldehyde to produce crotonaldehyde as well as crotyl alcohol with a good selectivity (ca. 90%) and stability and moderate conversion. MoO3/SiO2 or MoOx/SiO2 (reduced state) was found to be almost inactive for this reaction. Contrary to MoO3(MoOx)/SiO2, WO3(WOx)/SiO2 catalysts are active and more selective. Most of other unsupported oxides tested in this study are not attractive for the low activity and selectivity or poor stability. ZrO2 or pre-treated ZrO2SO42− was initially quite active, but deactivated quickly. Co-feeding hydrogen can enhance the activity of ZrO2 or inhibit deactivation of pre-treated ZrO2SO42−. The super acidic site associated with SO42− species has a great contribution to coking but little to aldol condensation.
