Abstract:The progress of study on synthesizing SiO2/polymer nanocomposite emulsion was reviewed.The major topic concerns some kinds of SiO2 materials and the synthetic mechanisms and methods of SiO2/Polymer nanocomposite emulsion.SiO2/polymer nanocomposite emulsion can be prepared through electrostatic interactions,adsorption intermedium,grafting and coupling mechanism.Blending,sol-gel,emulsion polymerization and dispersion polymerization are the common ways to prepare this nanocomposite emulsion.Futher more,the study emphases,developable directions and applications of the SiO2/polymer nanocomposite emulsion in the fields of paints,adhesive and plastic modifying were summarized.

Abstract:With TiOSO4 as raw materials stable anatase TiO2 sol was prepared. The sol was prepared was added into vinyl acetate-acrylate latex, to in-situ the composite emulsion containing nano crystalline TiO2. The film was prepared by a dip-coating method from the above emulsion. XRD, TEM and SEM were adopted to characterize the phase structure of TiO2 sol, the size and shape of particles in the composite emulsion and the surface morphology of the film. The effect of TiO2 addition amount on the contact angle, surface morphology and photocatalytic performance of the film were also investigated. The results show that the composite emulsion has high stability and excellent film forming property, and TiO2 particles are well distributed in the composite film. With the increase of TiO2 sol addition amount, TiO2 particles in the surface of the film are increased, leading to the increase of roughness of the film. After the UV irradiation, the contact angle of composite film decreases with the increase of TiO2 sol addition amount, and the photocatalytic performance is gradually improved.

Abstract:The copolymer emulsion of polyurethane-acrylate-vinyltriethoxysilane(KH570) was prepared with sodium laurylsulfate and OP-10 as emulsifiers by pre-emulsion process.The structure of copolymer and latex particle morphology were characterized by IR and TEM.The influence of amount of KH-570,temperature and pH value on copolymerization rate was discussed.The results showed that the copolymer contains siloxane groups and the latex particles ranged from 50～100 nm.The conversion rate decrease with increase of the quantity of KH-570 and decrease of the temperature.Incorporation of KH-570 can improve the water resistance of the coatings film significantly.

Abstract:Poly (styrene-acrylonitrile) emulsion particles with positive charges on the surface were synthesized by emulsion polymerization using cationic surfactant octotyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (OTAC) as emulsifier. The suspension of montmorillonite was slowly dropped into the emulsion. Through the interaction between the negative charges on the montmorillonite layers and the cations on the surface of poly (styrene-acrylonitrile) particles, the montmorillonite layers and emulsion particles could assemble and absorb on each other by themselves. The change of δ voltage and particle size of the emulsion during the process of dropping was characterized, which demonstrated that the emulsion particles and montmorillonite layers absorbed on each other by the electrovalent bond and an intersectional structure was formed in the complex emulsion. Poly (styrene-acrylonitrile)/montmorillonite nanocomposite was obtained after coagulation. The structure of nanocomposite was characterized with XRD and TEM. The results indicated that montmorillonite was exfoliated into layers with a thickness of several nanometers and uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix.

Abstract:Environmental purification using nano-TiO2 photocatalysts has attracted a great deal of attention in society. The super-hydrophilicity and self-cleaning surface of TiO2 thin film which is studied extensively establish new research area of photocatalytic thin film materials. Nano-TiO2 thin film coated on glass is effective in anti-fogging and antifouling. But TiO2 still exists disadvantages, such as hydrophilicity time and illumination conditions. In this paper we discuss how to improve surface hydrophilicity and light-sensitive property of TiO2 and make it apply to practice and create clean space to human.

Abstract:Six infants with severe, persistent hyperinsulinaemic hypoglycaemia were treated with the long‐acting somatostatin analogue SMS 201–995 (Sandostatin, Sandoz, Basle, Switzerland). Effective control of hypoglycaemia without the need for parenteral glucose was achieved in five of the six cases with doses ranging from 10 to 40 μg/kg day given either by four S.C. injections per day, or by continuous subcutaneous infusion (CSI). One has been well controlled on SMS 10 μg/kg day for 17 months as an out‐patient without requiring surgery, while the five others underwent sub‐total pancreatectomy after receiving short courses of the drug. In two patients where hypoglycaemia persisted after sub‐total pancreatectomy SMS was effective in inhibiting insulin secretion and preventing hypoglycaemia. Plasma somatomedin concentrations and linear growth were not suppressed in any patient. It is concluded that Sandostatin is useful in the pre and post‐operative management of most infants with this syndrome. In selected cases this analogue of somatostatin may also be a long‐term treatment option in place of pancreatectomy.

Preparation of Cu/OMMT/LLDPE Nanocomposites and Synergistic Effect Study of Two Different Nano Materials in Polymer Matrix

Abstract:Cu/OMMT (organo-montmorillonite)/LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) nanocomposites were prepared via melt mixing combined with melt extruding process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed to characterize the resultant nanocomposites. The results showed that the OMMT layers were exfoliated and the nano-Cu particles were distributed uniformly in the polymer matrix. And the introduction of nanofiller into LLDPE matrix had little effect on the crystallinity of the polymer. The salt spray tests showed that OMMT and nano-Cu could improve the anticorrosion properties of LLDPE matrix, respectively. And the coexistence of OMMT and nano-Cu in Cu/OMMT/LLDPE nanocomposites could produce a synergistic effect on enhancing the anticorrosion properties. Furthermore, the co-incorporation of OMMT and nano-Cu into the polymer matrix also increased the thermal-oxidative stability and mechanical properties of LLDPE matrix significantly, as compared with the Cu/LLDPE and OMMT/LLDPE nanocomposites due to the synergistic effect. The bactericidal properties evaluation showed that the bactericidal ability of Cu/OMMT/LLDPE increases with nano-Cu content effectively.

Abstract:The mono-oxides were prepared by combustion. Ti/Ce composite oxides were prepared by the heterogeneous nucleation-precipitation method. The samples were characterized by XRD, IR, UV-vis, SEM. The TiO2-CeO2 composite oxides were modified. The type, amount, temperature, pH of modifier were studied and optimal modification process was decided. Modification effect was evaluated by the degree of oil-affinity. The experiment results show that modifying condition of TiO2/CeO2 are titanate as modifier, modification temperature of 55°C, amount of modifier of 5%, pH of 6, modification time of 60 min. The modifying condition of CeO2/TiO2 are titanate as modifier, modification temperature of 45°C, amount of modifier of 5%, pH of 7, modification time of 60 min. The modified samples have less particle size change, enhance its solubility in the matrix and expand its applicability.

Abstract:Acrylic/nano-TiO2 composite latex samples were prepared via high-shear stirring and mixing (SM), ball milling and mixing (BM) and in situ polymerization (IS) methods, and investigated by transmission electron micrography (TEM), testing with an Instron machine, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectrophotometry. It was shown that the IS method led to the best dispersion of nano-TiO2 particles in acrylic copolymer films, the SM method was the second best and the BM method gave the least good result. Addition of nano-TiO2 by SM and BM methods led to higher tensile strength and Tg for polymers than introduction with micro-TiO2 and without any fillers. UV-VIS spectra indicated that addition of nano-TiO2 into acrylic copolymers could increase the absorbance and decrease the transmittance in the UV region, whereas the absorbance or transmittance in the UV region basically remained unchanged for the composites filled with micro-TiO2.

Abstract:Nano-sized hydroxyapatite (HA) chloroform suspensions were firstly prepared by reactions in an emulsion system of Ca(OH)(2)-H3PO4-chloroform-lecithin, then, HA/PMMA composites with well dispersed HA could be obtained by adding PMMA into the suspension. The residual water in the HA suspension could lead to a porous surface which demonstrated better bioactivity in in vitro test. The residual water could cause HA particles to exist on pore walls during the composite formation, resulting in the increase of the HA amount per unit surface.

Abstract:Stable and low-particle size nanoemulsions were prepared using ultrasound homogenization. The conditions for preparing low-viscosity nanoemulsions were optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) experimental design. The results showed that the addition of composite surfactants at 1%, an ultrasound amplitude of 35%, an ultrasound time of 4 min, and an ultrasound temperature of 20 °C yielded nanoemulsions with the best particle size and stability. The particle distribution was uniform, and the cold and heat stability were good. Compared with traditional emulsions, the low-viscosity nanoemulsion had better environmental stability, storage stability, and exhibited a phenomenon of self-reducing particle size at 40–55 °C, indicating that the emulsion had good performance under complex environmental conditions. The performance test of composite energetic materials using two types of emulsions as bonding systems showed that the low-viscosity nanoemulsion composite energetic material effectively reduced friction sensitivity, increased detonation velocity, and had better thermal stability and smaller propagation size. The results confirmed that the low-viscosity nanoemulsion perfectly met the requirements of bonding agents for composite energetic materials. This study provides a new approach for bonding agent systems of composite energetic materials and can serve as a new method to meet the special requirements of composite energetic materials.

Abstract:Abstract Silica (SiO 2 ) is one of the most promising inorganic nanofillers, and it has been widely used in the preparation of polymer nanocomposites due to its adjustable morphology, large specific surface area, and ease of functionalization. The surface modification, structural characteristics, and bonding mechanisms of SiO 2 are crucial in enhancing the overall performance of polymer nanocomposites. This review focuses on summarizing the recent progress made regarding the preparation and structure characterization methods, unique properties, and rheological behavior of SiO 2 /polymer nanocomposites. In addition, the latest applications of SiO 2 /polymer nanocomposites in coatings, smart devices, biomedicine, and environment are further explored. A comprehensive summary of the main challenges, opportunities, and perspectives regarding SiO 2 /polymer nanocomposites is also presented.

Abstract:To reduce the polymerization difficulty of hydrophobic modified copolymers, a hydrophobic modified cationic flocculant was fabricated using nano-TiO2 as initiator with acrylamide (AM) and methyl acryloxyethyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (DML) as monomers, and named it PAD. The copolymers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). Results verified that PAD was synthesized successfully and nano-TiO2 was more conducive to DML grafting than traditional photo-initiators. Reaction kinetics demonstrated that the polymerization process was a typical precipitation polymerization initiated by free radicals. Flocculation performance of flocculant on simulated emulsified oil was evaluated and optimized. The simulation results indicated that the flocculation performance of PAD was superior to traditional flocculant, which was attributed to the higher content of DML in PAD. The maximum removal rate of emulsified oil could reach 92.10%, and the corresponding turbidity removal rate was 93.54%. Further, the mechanism studies suggested that the removal of emulsified oil was realized by the synergistic effects of electric neutralization, demulsification, hydrophobic association and adsorption bridging. The findings of this study showed that nano-TiO2 exhibited a promising prospect in the field of polymer-initiated polymerization.

Abstract:In this study, using acrylamide (AAm) as monomer, potassium persulfate (K2S2O8) as initiator, N, N, N’, N’-tetramethylethylenediamine as accelerator, and N, N’-methylenebisacrylamide as crosslinking agents, titanium dioxide (TiO2) as inorganic enforcement fillers, the PAAm/TiO2 organic-inorganic composite hydrogels with enhanced mechanical properties were prepared by free radical polymerization. The obtained hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), mechanical and swelling property tests. The experimental results show that PAAm/TiO2 organic-inorganic composite hydrogels were successfully synthesized, the mechanical property of the hydrogel was improved but the swelling ratio of the hydrogel was decreased due to the addition of TiO2.

Abstract:In recent years, great attention have been paid to particle emulsifiers due to their potential application prospects in food, oil recovery, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, catalyst and the preparation of functional nano-materials. The recent research progress in particle emulsifiers is reviewed in this paper. The types of particle emulsifiers are summarized, including inorganic nanoparticles, surface modified or hybrid inorganic particles, organic nanoparticles and special particle emulsifier, Janus particles; the thermodynamic mechanism and kinetic behaviors of the particle emulsifiers stabled at the oil-water interface are elucidated; the contact angle of the particle emulsifiers at the phase interface and the particle size are key parameters that effect the adsorption stability of particles at the interface, while the arrangement pattern of particle emulsifiers in the oil-water interface is affected mainly by the interaction between particles. The recent application of the particle emulsifiers is also highlighted, including (1) preparation of Pickering emulsions, and functional modification of particle emulsifiers to make emulsions sensitive to pH, salt concentration, temperature, UV light, magnetic field; (2) preparation of Janus particles, colloidosomes, the particles or membranes with multi-level structures, and materials with porous structures using particle emulsifier as block and Pickering emulsion as template; (3) application of Janus particles catalysis.
