Abstract:In situ characterization techniques are conducted under actual‐ or near‐actual‐reaction conditions. These advanced characterizations provide opportunity to probe the dynamic change of morphology and structure, the charge transfer and distribution, and the detection of surface species and reaction intermediates. Photocatalysis, as one of the hopeful technologies to overcome the issues of energy shortage and environmental pollution, has increasingly attracted attention. In situ characterization technology, which can observe the dynamic changes of catalysts in photocatalytic reaction in real time, plays a crucial part in the development of designing highly efficient photocatalysts and investigating their mechanism. This review introduces and summarizes primary applications of in situ characterization techniques in photocatalysis, including in situ investigation of the morphology and chemical structure of photocatalysts, photogenerated charges transfer, spatial distribution, and surface reaction pathways. Suggestions for future development of in situ characterization techniques in photocatalysis have prospected at the end.

Abstract:The progress of in2situ FT2IR in the research of methane oxidation is reviewed. The use of in situ FT2IR technology in oxidative coupling of methane ( OCM) and partial oxidation of methane ( POM) in recent years are introduced. The different oxygen species on OCM catalysts and the effects of experimental conditions on POM reaction mechanism are discussed. The studies of identifying and assigning unambiguous IR band are important and necessary , which will make the FT2IR technology have more wide applications.

We systematically summarize the applications of various optical and X-ray spectroscopy techniques, including Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), in identifying active sites and determining reaction mechanisms of the CO2 thermochemical conversion with hydrogen and light alkanes over heterogeneous catalysts. Finally, we discuss challenges and opportunities for the development of in-situ characterization in the future to further enlarge the capability of these powerful techniques. Abstract:Catalysts can significantly promote the reaction dynamics and are therefore considered crucial components for achieving high electrochemical energy conversion efficiency. However, the active sites of the catalysts, particularly for nano-level and atomic-level catalysts commonly undergo reconstruction under practical applications. Therefore, obtaining an in-depth and systematic understanding on the real active sites through in situ/operando characterization techniques is a prerequisite for establishing the structure-performance relationship and guiding the future design of more efficient electrocatalysts. Herein, we summarize the recent progress of in situ/operando characterization techniques for identifying the nature of active sites of electrocatalysts when used in electrocatalytic energy conversion reaction. Specifically, our focus lies in the fundamental principles of various in situ/operando characterization techniques, with particular emphasis on their applications for electrocatalytic reactions. Beyond that, the challenges and perspective insights are also added in the final section to highlight the future direction of this important field.

Abstract:X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technology is extensively applied in the field of catalysts, offering deep insights into their electronic structures and chemical composition. The development of advanced techniques based on XPS instrumentation allows for a deeper and more holistic exploration of the characteristics of catalytic materials. This mini-review introduces and summarizes the primary applications of XPS-based analysis methods, including ion scattering spectroscopy (ISS) for analyzing single atomic layers, angle-resolved XPS, high energy X-ray sources and argon ion sputtering, each providing different depths of information about a sample. It also summarizes the use of inert atmosphere transfer devices and high-temperature reactors for quasi in situ monitoring as well as the integration of in situ techniques, including light irradiation XPS, to study catalysts’ behavior under realistic conditions.

Abstract:The physicochemical properties of heterogeneous catalysts in static or inert environments often deviate greatly from the properties under in-situ or working conditions. To gain an insightful understanding of realistic catalyst properties and the corresponding catalytic mechanisms, it is essential to identify and rationalize changes in catalysts under reaction conditions. In recent years, in-situ transmission electron microscope (in-situ TEM) techniques have been increasingly developed, offering a unique approach to visualize the evolution of heterogeneous catalysis with ultra-high spatial resolution, good energy resolution and reasonable temporal resolution under controllable or even realistic catalytic conditions. In this review, we have summarized recent advances in the in-situ TEM analysis of heterogeneous catalysis, which suggests the great potential of this technique in this important field. Furthermore, technical challenges and possible solutions are discussed.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis, as a key part of solar energy utilization, has far-reaching implications for industrial, agricultural, and commercial development. Lack of understanding of the catalyst evolution and the reaction mechanism is a critical obstacle for designing efficient and stable photocatalysts. This review summarizes the recent progress of in-situ exploring the dynamic behavior of catalyst materials and reaction intermediates. Semiconductor photocatalytic processes and two major classes of in-situ techniques that include microscopic imaging and spectroscopic characterization are presented. Finally, problems and challenges in in-situ characterization are proposed, geared toward developing more advanced in-situ techniques and monitoring more accurate and realistic reaction processes, to guide designing advanced photocatalysts.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide to valuable chemicals and fuels driven by renewable energy plays a crucial role in achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Understanding the structure-activity relationship and the reaction mechanism is significant for tuning electrocatalyst selectivity. Therefore, characterizing catalyst dynamic evolution and reaction intermediates under reaction conditions is necessary but still challenging. We first summarize the most recent progress in mechanistic understanding of heterogeneous CO2/CO reduction using in situ/operando techniques, including surface-enhanced vibrational spectroscopies, X-ray- and electron-based techniques, and mass spectroscopy, along with discussing remaining limitations. We then offer insights and perspectives to accelerate the future development of in situ/operando techniques.
Application of in-situ XRD in study of catalysts phase transformation

Abstract:The crystal structure and the crystallization degree have significant effect on the activity of catalysts.In-situ XRD can monitor the relationship between the temperature variation and crystal structure.The technique is valuable for the study of the phase transformation and crystallization of the catalysts,its phase transformation kinetics and catalysis performance.The phase transformation of three typical catalysts(TiO2,HLaNb2O7,SBA-15) was studied using in-situ XRD.The experimental results show that the crystal structure and the degree of crystallization can be monitored under the different temperatures and gas atmosphere.The dependence of FWHM,peak intensity and crystal size on the diferent temperatures and calcination gass can be obtained.The in-situ XRD information can be used to control the structure in a real time mode.It is also applicable to normal phase transformation of layered structure and mesoporous molecular sieve.

Abstract:In-situ experimental techniques have been widely applied to uncover the dynamic evolutions of both the structure of catalysts and the interfacial property of catalysis, thus serving as the most important means to gain molecular-level insights into the reaction mechanisms. In this mini review, we summarized recent progress in the applications of the interface-sensitive in-situ Raman and in-situ infrared (IR) spectroscopy towards CO 2 electroreduction. Specifically, we concentrated on two aspects to clarify the role of both in-situ Raman and in-situ IR in revealing reaction mechanisms of CO 2 electroreduction. The first one was the in-situ spectroscopy for detecting the active structures. The other one was the in-situ spectroscopy for capturing the reaction intermediates. As powerful guidance for the rational design of catalysts, the reaction mechanism was discussed in the specific examples. Finally, we try to predict the trends for the future development of in-situ spectroscopic techniques towards heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:The in situ characterization of catalysts provides important information on the catalyst and the understanding of its catalytic performance and selectivity for a specific reaction. Temperature programmed analyses (TPX) techniques for catalyst characterization reveal the role of the support on the stabilization and dispersion of the active sites. However, these can be altered at high temperatures since sintering of active species can occur as well as possible carbon deposition which hinders the active species and deactivates the catalyst. The in situ characterization of the spent catalyst, however, may expose the causes of catalyst deactivation. For example, a simple temperature programmed oxidation (TPO) analysis on the spent catalyst may produce CO and CO2 via a reaction with O2 at high temperatures and this is a strong indication that deactivation may be due to the deposition of carbon. Other TPX techniques such as temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and pulse chemisorption are also valuable techniques when they are applied in situ to the fresh catalyst and then to the catalyst upon deactivation. In this work, two Ni supported catalysts were considered as examples to elucidate the importance of these techniques in the characterization study of catalysts applied to the reaction of hydrogenation of CO2.

Abstract:Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been extensively employed to explore catalytic mechanisms in recent years. Nevertheless, traditional TEM techniques cannot clarify the true active states in the reaction process. In contrast, in situ TEM has made remarkable progress in simulating reactions, allowing the record of dynamic events at the atomic scale. In addition, it provides a wealth of information on the material morphology, microstructure, and dynamics of chemical properties at the micro-nano scale. In this review we introduce the principles, characteristics and research progress in the field of in situ TEM techniques, with particular emphasis on their roles in exploring in the fields of catalysts' synthesis, catalytic behaviors, thermal catalysis, and structure reconstruction of the catalysis process. The challenges and obstacles facing in situ TEM, as well as outlook for emerging research opportunities are discussed in the final part.

Abstract:(Photo-)electrocatalytic artificial photosynthesis driven by electrical and/or solar energy that converts water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into hydrogen (H2), carbohydrates and oxygen (O2), has proven to be a promising and effective route for producing clean alternatives to fossil fuels, as well as for storing intermittent renewable energy, and thus to solve the energy crisis and climate change issues that we are facing today. Basic (photo-)electrocatalysis consists of three main processes: (1) light absorption, (2) the separation and transport of photogenerated charge carriers, and (3) the transfer of photogenerated charge carriers at the interfaces. With further research, scientists have found that these three steps are significantly affected by surface and interface properties (e.g., defect, dangling bonds, adsorption/desorption, surface recombination, electric double layer (EDL), surface dipole). Therefore, the catalytic performance, which to a great extent is determined by the physicochemical properties of surfaces and interfaces between catalyst and reactant, can be changed dramatically under working conditions. Common approaches for investigating these phenomena include X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), scanning probe microscopy (SPM), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXRD), auger electron spectroscopy (AES), transmission electron microscope (TEM), etc. Generally, these techniques can only be applied under ex situ conditions and cannot fully recover the changes of catalysts in real chemical reactions. How to identify and track alterations of the catalysts, and thus provide further insight into the complex mechanisms behind them, has become a major research topic in this field. The application of in situ/operando characterization techniques enables real-time monitoring and analysis of dynamic changes. Therefore, researchers can obtain physical and/or chemical information during the reaction (e.g., morphology, chemical bonding, valence state, photocurrent distribution, surface potential variation, surface reconstruction), or even by the combination of these techniques as a suite (e.g., atomic force microscopy-based infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR), or near-ambient-pressure STM/XPS combined system (NAP STM-XPS)) to correlate the various properties simultaneously, so as to further reveal the reaction mechanisms. In this review, we briefly describe the working principles of in situ/operando surface/interface characterization technologies (i.e., SPM and X-ray spectroscopy) and discuss the recent progress in monitoring relevant surface/interface changes during water splitting and CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR). We hope that this review will provide our readers with some ideas and guidance about how these in situ/operando characterization techniques can help us investigate the changes in catalyst surfaces/interfaces, and further promote the development of (photo-)electrocatalytic surface and interface engineering.

Abstract:CO2 conversion to chemical fuels through photoreduction, electroreduction, or thermoreduction is considered as one of the most effective methods to solve environmental pollution and energy shortage problems. However, recent studies show that the involved catalysts may undergo continuous reconstruction under realistic working conditions, which unfortunately causes controversial results concerning the active sites and reaction mechanism of CO2 reduction. Thus, it is necessary, while challenging, to monitor in real time the dynamic evolution of the catalysts and reaction intermediates by in situ techniques under experimental conditions. In this Perspective, we start with the working principle and detection modes of various in situ characterization techniques. Subsequently, we systematically summarize the recent developments of in situ studies on probing the catalyst evolution during the CO2 reduction process. We further focus on the progress of in situ studies in monitoring the reaction intermediates and catalytic products, in which we also highlight how the theoretical calculations are combined to reveal the reaction mechanism in detail. Finally, based on the achievements in the representative studies, we present some prospects and suggestions for in situ studies of CO2 reduction in the future.

Abstract:Identifying the actual structure of the catalytic species under working conditions is an extremely challenging task due to the heterogeneity of iron species in Fe-containing micro- and meso-porous materials. In recent years, new spectroscopic techniques have been developed to study the catalytic species "while doing the job". In-situ Raman Spectroscopy plays a key role in the characterization of the molecular and electronic structures of Fe/ZSM-5 and their relationship to catalytic performances of methane selective oxidation and the hydroxylation of benzene.

Abstract:In situ MAS NMR has been demonstrated to be a superior technique for analyzing desorbed reactants, reacting adsorbates, intermediates and products. The results are useful for getting deeper insights into catalytic processes and reaction kinetics, and for revealing the mechanisms of organic reactions. The utility of in situ NMR spectroscopy has demonstrated that this technique is an important means for the studies of catalytic organic reactions. The objective of this paper is to give a review on the generation of apparatus for in situ MAS NMR experiments, and to illustrate the applications of the in situ MAS NMR techniques in various important organic reactions catalyzed by solid catalysts. The typical reactions studied by in situ MAS NMR techniques include conversion of methanol to hydrocarbons (MTG process), aromatization of methane, ethylbenzene reaction over zeolite HMOR. observation of carbenium intermediates formation, and photocatalytic organic reaction.

Abstract:Hydrogenating CO 2 is acknowledged as a structure-sensitive reaction, where structural changes of catalysts profoundly influence the product distribution and catalysts activity. However, traditional characterization techniques (so-called ex situ ) fail to accurate and authentic detection of the structure of catalysts and reaction pathway changes when the catalyst is in the working state. To address this issue, in situ/operando spectroscopies have been developed to elucidate the structure-activity relationships of catalysts in the thermo-catalytic CO 2 hydrogenation process, advancing our understanding and guiding the design of catalysts. In particular, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) can be used to monitor the real-time changes of catalyst structures, elucidating the metal (or oxide)-support interaction, identifying active sites and investigating the causes of catalyst deactivation. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) can be employed to track the evolution of surface intermediates during the reaction, inferring plausible reaction mechanisms. Combined with steady-state isotope transient kinetic analysis (SSITKA) experiments, it provides valuable insights into the kinetics information of surface species. In this review, we summarize the up-to-date advances in these spectroscopic techniques and delineate potential future trends in the CO 2 reduction.

Abstract:Advances on the application of in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry to coke deposition during catalytic processes of petrochemical industry, including catalytic isomerization, reduction, and cracking are reviewed in this paper. The mechanisms of coke deposition over solid acid catalysts and bi-functional noble metal acid catalysts are summarized. The causes of coke formation under different temperatures are also discussed. Based on the preliminary results of catalytic cracking of n-heptane over zeolites in our work, identification and assignment of IR absorption bands for coked substances as the key issues on application of in situ FTIR are put forward. Extended applications to the mechanisms of other catalytic reactions and the properties of catalysts are proposed.
