Abstract:Environmental friendly leather finishing agent based on polyurethane has attracted great attention in recent years.In this paper we reported the synthesis of polyurethane latex through pre-polymerization,chain extension,neutralization and emulsification using organic siloxane polymer as the modifier.The surface composition,surface hydrophilicity,and mechanical properties were investigated.The results indicated that the resultant latex could be stored up to one year.Furthermore,due to the introduction of organic siloxane blocks and the in situ crosslinking during the film formation,the coating was hydrophobic and showed excellent crocking fastness.

Abstract:The development of high-performance waterborne polyurethane ink binder presents challenges due to the lack of outstanding water resistance, adhesion, and heat resistance in traditional waterborne polyurethane. Herein, series of waterborne polyurethane emulsions were synthesized using the pre-polymerization chain expansion and self-emulsification method, with varying contents of 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane as the modified post-chain extender. The effect of varying the concentration of 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane on the characteristics of waterborne polyurethane dispersions and films was investigated. The results indicated that there was a significant improvement in adhesion, thermal stability, and water resistance with an increase in the concentration of 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane. Specifically, When the introduction amount was 3 wt%, the resulting film exhibited the best overall properties, including a tensile strength of 48.4 MPa, water absorption of 4.3 wt%, shear strength and adhesion of 3.9 MPa and 3.86 MPa respectively, as well as a T-peel strength of 14.9 N/mm. This work provided meaningful guidance for developing a novel waterborne polyurethane-based ink binder with strong adhesion, high mechanical properties, and excellent water resistance.

Abstract:In this research work, one-component solvent-containing type polyurethane adhesives for printing inks were produced and studied. The effects of different types of polyol used in the preparation of polyurethane on the morphology, mechanical properties, printing adaptability and cohesion of inks were investigated. Results showed that the micro-phase separation degree of polyester PU resins was lower than that of polyether PU resins, and that the polyester PU resins had better mechanical properties, printing adaptability and cohesion properties.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) often have limitations like inadequate weathering resistance and thermal stability. To overcome these shortcomings, lignin has been selected as a modifier for its abundant availability, renewability, and biocompatibility. This study synthesized a cationic WPU using isophorone diisocyanate and polyethylene glycol as raw materials. Hydrophilicity was attained through the inclusion of dihydroxyethyl dodecylamine as a chain extender, while the introduction of epoxy monomers and lignin served to modify the polyurethane. Furthermore, a dye dispersion for cotton fabric dyeing was prepared by combining the synthesized polyurethane, chitosan, and dyes. The cationic nature of the polyurethane played a crucial role in facilitating dye adhesion and uptake on the fabric surface, resulting in improved dyeing performance. The incorporation of epoxy side chains and chitosan cross-linking contributed to the excellent color fastness of the dyed fabrics. Moreover, the incorporation of lignin and chitosan endowed the fabric with antibacterial properties. Simultaneously, it provided effective UV protection, characterized by a high UV protection factor value for the fabrics. This lignin-modified WPU exhibits tremendous potential in applications such as textile coatings, adhesives, and color fixation agents. It effectively addresses the limitations of traditional WPUs and offers notable advantages, including a renewable source, cost-effectiveness, and biocompatibility.

Abstract:A waterborne polyurethane-based polymeric dye (WPU-CFBB) was synthesized by anchoring 1, 4-bis(methylamino)anthraquinone (CFBB) to waterborne polyurethane chains. The number molecular weight, glass transition temperature, and average emulsion particle size for the polymeric dye were determined, respectively. This polymeric dye exhibited intriguing optical behaviors. The polymeric dye engendered two new absorption bands centered at about 520 nm and 760 nm if compared with CFBB in UV-vis spectra. The 760 nm peak showed hypsochromic shift with the decrease of average particle sizes. The polymeric dye dramatically demonstrated both hypsochromic and bathochromic effects with increasing temperature. The fluorescence intensity of the polymeric dye was much higher than that of CFBB. It was found that the fluorescence intensities would be enhanced from 20°C to 40°C and then decline from 40°C to 90°C. The fluorescence of the polymeric dye emulsion was very stable and was not sensitive to quenchers.

Abstract:A novel anionic waterborne polyurethane-based fluorescent dye WPU-DV26 was synthesized by incorporating the molecular structure of disperse violet 26 (DV26) into the polyurethane chain. The structure of WPU-DV26 was confirmed by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and UV–vis absorption analysis. Comparing to the UV–vis spectrum of DV26, WPU-DV26 showed a hypsochromic shift from the absorption maxima of 518, 558, 609nm to 510, 548, 586nm, respectively. WPU-DV26 can form stable latex in water. The number average molecular weight and its distribution index, and average latex particle size for WPU-DV26 were determinedto be 2.33×104, 1.36 and 80nm, respectively. The improved thermal stability of WPU-DV26 can be attributed to the embedded anthraquinone unit of DV26. It was found that both the intensity and stability of the fluorescence of WPU-DV26 latex were improved significantly compared with those of DV26.

Abstract:The invention discloses a water-based ink for plastic printing and a preparation method thereof. The water-based ink is prepared by using epoxy resin modified water-based polyurethane emulsion and organic silicon modified styrene-acrylic emulsion as base materials and using deionized water and alcohol as solvents. The water-based ink comprises the following components by weight percent: 15-30% of epoxy resin modified water-based polyurethane emulsion, 20-35% of organic silicon modified styrene-acrylic emulsion, 10-20% of non-toxic organic pigment, 5-30% of deionized water, 5-20% of ethanol or isopropanol, 3-5% of triethylamine and 1.6-10% of additive. The water-based ink does not contain the volatile organic solvent, is incombustible, nonexplosible and non-toxic and has high attachment fastness on the plastic film and good printing effect; the ink has high chemical resistance, acid resistance and alkali resistance; and the ink has good water resistance, heat resistance, freezing resistance and oil resistance. The ink can be widely used in the packaging and printing of the industries such as grain, vegetables, alcohol and tobacco, and food; and the safety and non-toxicity of the ink can be ensured, and the ink is a green and environmentally-friendly product and has considerable market potential.

Abstract:Benefiting its high reactivity with natural fabrics, vinyl sulfone reactive dyes have the advantage of obtaining good color fixation and high exhaustion rates under medium or low temperatures. Although these dyes were widely applied in traditional dyeing processes, little research has been conducted on vinyl sulfone dye-based inks for digital inkjet printing. Hence, we explore an efficient and environmental-friendly ink system for inkjet printing on natural fabrics. In this work, three vinyl sulfone reactive dyes including reactive orange 131 (O-131), reactive red AS (R-AS), and reactive blue 203 (B-203) were selected to simulate the stable structure of the dye molecules in aqueous solution by GAUSSIAN 09 package based on density functional theory (DFT). On this basis, the physicochemical properties of the inks were studied and the color fastness and apparent color depth values of cotton, linen, and silk inkjet printed fabrics were tested. As a result, compared to O-131 and B-203, the monomer molecular content of R-AS dye solutions was significantly reduced and displayed a strong tendency to aggregate. The surface tensions of three inks decreased with increasing concentrations and the degree of molecular aggregation. The rheological properties of the dye solutions were correlated with concentration and molecular weight. At the same concentrations, B-203 had the largest molecular weight and the solution exhibited the largest viscosity. The printed fabrics all possessed good color quality and color fastness, and printed silk fabric displayed higher color depth than cotton and linen fabrics. This work provided a cleaner and cost-effective ink for inkjet printing on natural fabrics by exploring the properties of vinyl sulfone reactive dye-based inks.

Abstract:Disperse dyes are hardly soluble in water and are usually milled with large numbers of dispersants in the dye industry. A branched waterborne polyurethane (WPU) as a dispersant with different side chain lengths (WPU350, WPU550 and WPU750) was synthesized through an acetone process. The effects of the side chain length on the stability and dispersibility of disperse dyes were particularly discussed and analyzed. The results showed that due to their special comb-like structures, these WPUs were able to achieve good dispersive ability for disperse dyes and WPU550 had the best dispersibility through steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsion on the surface of dyes. In addition, WPU was further employed to prepare the dispersion to dye the polyester fabric. These dispersions with WPU not only demonstrated an improved K/S value, wet and dry rubbing fastness and soaping fastness but also had better dispersing and dyeing performance than commercial dispersants.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethane (PU) flame retarding gum (I) was synthesized with a special technology by use of waterborne PU as the base material and the added flame-retardants and auxiliary agents. Zeta potential and TEM tests stated the waterborne PU gum absorbed and partially occluded the flame retardants, and the resulted I had good stability. The flame retarding finishing technology was optimized by the orthogonal experiments, and the piloting experiments were carried out in Hongshan Coating Factory, Xiaoshan. The results showed that the finished fabrics attained the high level of the standard fort flame retardancy and other properties.

Abstract:Colored waterborne polyurethanes have been widely used in paintings, leathers, textiles, and coatings. Here, a series of black waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) with different ratios of black dye, Sudan Black B (SDB), were prepared by step-growth polymerization. WPU emulsions as obtained exhibit low particle sizes and remarkable storage stability at the same time. At different dye loadings, essential structural, statistical and thermal properties are characterized. FTIR (fourier transform infrared) spectra indicate that SDB is covalently linked into waterborne polyurethane chains. All of the WPUs with covalently linked SDB show better color fastness and resistance of thermal migration than those with SDB mixed physically. Besides, WPUs incorporated SDB covalently with different polymeric diols, polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMG), polypropylene glycol (PPG), poly-1, 4-butylene adipate glycol (PBA) and polycaprolactone glycol (PCL), were prepared to obtain different properties to cater to a variety of practical demands. By a spraying method, the black WPUs can be directly used as metal coatings without complex dyeing process by simply mixing coating additive and other waterborne resins, which exhibit excellent coating performance.

Abstract:A series of novel waterborne polyurethane dispersions (HPB-WPU) possessing the property of photochromism was prepared from isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMG), and 2, 2-dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA) using a self-made azo diol, N, N-bis-(2-hydroxy-ethyl)-4-phenylazo-aniline (HPB), as a chain extender to partially substitute for 1, 4-butanediol (BDO). The molecular structures of HPB and HPB-WPU were confirmed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The photochromism of HPB and HPB-WPU was evaluated using ultraviolet visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy during the test. The results indicated that when the dispersion was placed under UV irradiation, the color and absorption intensity both changed. The UV-Vis absorption showed a blue shift effect of about 33nm when HPB was blocked into polyurethane chains. The azo chromophore became permanently fixed into the molecule, and the dispersions remained stable for a long time because of the covalent bonding with polyurethane chains during synthesis. There were no precipitates or any other changes after they had been allowed to remain at room temperature for half a year. The synthesized HPB-WPU was also investigated using differential scanning calorimetric analysis, particle size analysis, and water resistance analysis. It was observed that HPB could improve the thermostability, emulsion stability and water-resistant property of the waterborne polyurethane.

Abstract:A novel polymeric dye of aqueous dispersion poly [urethane-(disperse blue 14)-urethane] was synthesized based on poly(propylene glycol) (PPG), 2, 4-tolylene diisocyanate (TDI), dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA), disperse blue 14 and triethylamine (TEA) depending on a modified acetone process. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to identify the structure of the polymeric dye, indicating an obvious carbonyl stretching absorption in disperse blue 14. The polymer was also characterized by the analysis of DSC, TGA, WAXD and UV-Vis spectroscopy.
Synthesis and cured film property of waterborne polyurethane dye based on eriochrome black T

Abstract:A noval waterborne polyurethane dye EBT-PU and a reference BDO-PU were synthesized using toluene diisocyanate, polyoxypropylene glycol, 2, 2-dimethylol propionic acid and eriochrome black T (EBT) or 1, 4-butanediol (BDO) by self-emulsification method. The structure of EBT-PU and BDO-PU was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It was found that the maximum absorption of 528 nm in UV-Visible spectrum appeared a bathochromic shift of 44 nm because of the disappearance of auxochrome -OH and the change of conjugate system for EBT during the reaction between EBT and -NCO group. Although the soft and hard segments in chains of EBT-PU and BDO-PU are incompatible, the conjugate structure of EBT has a big effect on the incompatibility comparing to the aliphatic chain of BDO. The experimental result shows that EBT-PU is an amorphous polymer, and the conjugate structure of EBT can introduce a distinct improve for the thermal stability of EBT-PU.
Performance Requirements of Environment-friendly Water-based Pigment Paste for Synthetic Leather

Abstract:The composition, preparation of water-based pigment paste for wet type synthetic leather were introduced. Several types of pigment that have large color gamut coverage for making the paste were also presented. In the design of the production process of pigment paste, several details should be taken into account such as the heavy metals, volatile organic compounds(VOCs) content, alkylphenol polyoxyethylene ether content (APEO), surfactant types and whether the pigment contains or degradation into a multi - chlorine biphenyl. The performance indicators and the compatibility testing methods of water-based pigment paste for synthetic leather were also proposed.

Abstract:Background Utilizing waterborne polyurethane (WPU), the commercial dyes disperse red 60 (R60), disperse yellow 54 (Y54), and disperse blue 56 (B56) are encapsulated to form micelle structures. When applied to fabric dyeing, this approach effectively enhances properties such as colorfastness and resistance to dry and wet rubbing. Method Commercial disperse dyes were physically encapsulated using WPU to form micelles in a water medium. The structures of the encapsulated dyes were confirmed using 1 H-NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. The average molecular weight (Mn) of the materials ranged from 2.2 × 10 4 to 2.9 × 10 4 g mol −1 . UV-visible (UV-vis) spectra comparisons before and after encapsulation showed no significant color shift, indicating minimal alteration of the original dyes. However, all dye-WPU samples exhibited a notable quantum yield of 41% in the fluorescence spectra and displayed higher thermal stability compared to the dyes without WPU. Significant findings The electrical layer on dye-WPU particles enhanced fluorescence intensity. Zeta potential measurements confirmed particle stability (-32 to -55 mV). Micelle size ranged from 70-150 nm. Encapsulated dye-WPU showed improved thermal stability and T g of −58 to −65 °C. Applied to fabrics, especially cotton, dye-WPU exhibited excellent color fastness and resistance to thermal migration in immersion or digital printing. Novel Waterborne UV-Curable Hyperbranched Polyurethane Acrylate/Silica with Good Printability and Rheological Properties Applicable to Flexographic Ink

Abstract:Novel waterborne UV-curable hyperbranched polyurethane acrylate/silica (HBWPUA/SiO2) nanocomposites were prepared by a three-step procedure and sol-gel method. 1H NMR and 13C NMR results indicate that HBWPU is successfully synthesized. Surface tension and contact angle tests both demonstrate the good wettability of the nanocomposites. Besides, the kinetics of photopolymerization of HBWPUA/SiO2 films were analyzed by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, which reveals that the modified SiO2 could accelerate the curing speed of HBWPUA coatings. Thermal gravity analysis indicates that the HBWPUA/SiO2 hybrid films have a better thermal stability than the pure HBWPUA cured films. Furthermore, the hybrid films show enhanced pencil hardness, abrasion resistance, and adhesion. On the basis of the above, HBWPUA/SiO2 nanocomposites were finally applied to waterborne UV-curing flexographic printing ink, which is printed on poly(ethylene terephthalate) and glass. The nanocomposite presents good rheological behavior because the ink has a lower Z 0, a higher Z ∞, and the viscosity rebuild time is 375 s. Three colors (red, yellow, and blue) of ink were used to test its printing quality, the curing time was below 30 s, and the adhesion was excellent without being stripped. All of the inks show good water resistance and abrasion resistance. Moreover, the red and blue inks possess better solid densities than the value of 1.07 of yellow ink, and are 1.83 and 1.84, respectively. The current study suggests that the process has promise in applications of food packages.
