Abstract:Some dried citrus peels, more familiar as chenpi in China, have been widely used in traditional Chinese medicines from ancient times. This paper reports the efficiency of infusion cooking on extracting minerals and phenolic compounds (flavanone glycosides [FGs], polymethoxylated flavones [PMFs], and phenolic acids), and also antioxidant activity of hot water extract of citrus peels. Peels of 2 citrus varieties, namely, Satsuma mandarin (C. unshiu Marc.) and Ponkan (C. poonensis Hort. ex Tanaka), which belong to C. reticulata, were selected. As a result, hot water extraction was efficient in extracting phenolic acids and some minerals. As for citrus flavonoids, narirutin, nobiletin, and tangeretin were easier to extract than hesperidin. The result of antioxidant capacity assays indicated that for citrus peels, hot water extract had almost the same capacity as the methanol extract. We suggested that Ponkan was more suitable as the source of chenpi, since its hot water extract had much higher content of phenolic acids, FGs and PMFs, and higher antioxidant capacity than those of Satsuma mandarin. Generally, to raise the extraction temperature or to prolong the time could not yield higher content of phenolic compounds and stronger antioxidant capacity, though the content of minerals increased to some extent. Furthermore, a 2nd-time extraction seemed necessary since considerable minerals and phenolic compounds could be obtained by doing so. Finally, we suggested that 2 times extraction at 100 degrees C for 30 min was proper to extract the minerals and phenolic compounds in chenpi.

Abstract:Application of ultrasound to extract a variety of biologically active compounds from plant materials has been widely investigated. However, there are few reports on the local effect of ultrasonic irradiation on the yields of these compounds. In the present article, the local effect of ultrasonic treatment on total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activities (ATT) of extracts from citrus peels was investigated. To optimize the extraction process, a response surface methodology (RSM) was used to evaluate the effects of ultrasonic variables including ultrasonic power, ultrasonic time, and extraction temperature on extracts from penggan (Citrus reticulata) peel. The results showed that TPC and ATT increased on increasing ultrasonic time and temperature. The maximum of TPC and ATT by ultrasonic treatment was observed in near ultrasonic irradiation surface, in which ultrasonic power appeared to be positive effect. Furthermore, when the effect of the 3 independent variables was evaluated simultaneously using RSM, the optimal ultrasonic conditions for responses were determined as: 42 to 45 W, 23 to 25 min, 31 to 34 degrees C. The results presented here emphasized that application of ultrasound should be considered both the optimization of ultrasonic variables and available ultrasonic device.
Study on Joint Production Technology of Essential Oil and Pectin from Citrus Reticulata Peel

Abstract:The joint production technique of citrus peel oils and pectin were studied in this paper. The best peel hardening process through test screening results show that the use of calcium chloride solution, calcium chloride mass fraction of 0.5%, the 5 h conditions of immersion time, through this processing the squeezing fluid viscosity is low, you can have to get a better essential oil yield; peel residue after oil extraction is directly used for pectin extraction, the optimum extraction conditions: extraction temperature 90 ℃ , the processing time is 30 min, the pH value of 2.0, add water to 450%, acidifier for sulfuric acid. Contrast joint production and traditional laws and extraction yield and quality of essential oils and pectin, the results show that the essential oil yield is similar to two processes, but the oil quality of the joint production method is better than the traditional method; pectin extraction rate of the joint production than the traditional method to improve 15.9% , the ash and acid insoluble substance of pectin from the joint production method is higher than the traditional method, but conformed the line marked and national standard requirements. The joint production technique of citrus reticulata peel essential oils and pectin can be used for industrial production.

Abstract:An ultrasonic method of the extraction of hesperidin from dried citrus peel was investigated and optimized. The influence of five extraction variables on extraction efficiency of hesperidin was studied. The optimum extraction conditions were: methanol; solvent: sample ratio=50:1 (v/w); extraction time 30 min and the size of dried citrus peel powder is between 0.45～0.088mm. The recovery of hesperidin was studied by HPLC and the reproducibility of the extraction method was determined.

Abstract:Citrus peel, as an effective component of citrus by-products, contains a large number of natural active components, including pectin, vitamins, dietary fiber, essential oil, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and so on. With the development of the circular economy, citrus peel has attracted extensive concern in the food industry. The exploitation of citrus peel would assist in excavating potential properties and alleviating the environmental burden. Polymethoxyflavones (PMFs) exist almost in citrus peel, which have remarkable biological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-obesity. Therefore, PMFs from citrus peel have the potential to develop as dietary supplements in the near future. Collectively, it is essential to take action to optimize the extraction conditions of PMFs and make the most of the extracts. This review mainly compiles several extraction methods and bioactivities of PMFs from citrus peel and introduces different applications including food processing, pharmaceutical industry, and plant rhizosphere to develop better utilization of citrus PMFs.

Waste and Biomass Valorization

Abstract:The widespread nature of citrus cultivation, processing, and consumption on a global scale results in a substantial volume of by-products within the citrus processing industries. The indiscriminate disposal of these by-products, without a proper treatment and disposal methods, poses a significant environmental hazard. Amongst, citrus peel waste being a prolific by-product, is generated on a large scale and is increasingly gaining recognition for its industrial potential in producing fuels and chemicals. This encompasses biofuels such as ethanol and biogas, bioactive compounds like flavonoids, alkaloids, essential oils, D-limonene, and pectin, as well as various biochemical compounds including organic acid, biosurfactants, enzymes, and bioplastics through strategic valorization processes. The valorization process entails a variety of techniques, including chemical, biological, and physical treatment methods. Physical treatments, such as microwave and ultrasound-assisted extraction methods, are employed, alongside extraction using solvents and biological methods including fermentation and saccharification, which are integral components of the valorization process. Each of these methodologies contributes to the production of the aforementioned value-added compounds. Furthermore, the recently developed supercritical fluid can also be employed for extracting these valuable compounds, enhancing the versatility and efficiency of the valorization process. This review addresses a refinery strategy, emphasizing the incorporation of a suitable valorization/treatment approach to transform citrus peel waste into high-value-added products.

Abstract:Citrus is an important genus in the Rutaceae family, and citrus peels can be used in both food and herbal medicine. However, the bulk of citrus peels are discarded as waste by the fruit processing industry, causing environmental pollution. This study aimed to provide guidelines for the rational and effective use of citrus peels by elucidating the volatile and nonvolatile metabolites within them using metabolomics based on headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-Q-Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry. In addition, the antioxidant activities of the citrus peels were evaluated using DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS radical scavenging, and ferric reducing antioxidant power. In total, 103 volatile and 53 nonvolatile metabolites were identified and characterized. Alcohols, aldehydes, and terpenes constituted 87.36% of the volatile metabolites, while flavonoids and carboxylic acids accounted for 85.46% of the nonvolatile metabolites. Furthermore, (Z)-2-penten-1-ol, L-pipecolinic acid, and limonin were identified as characteristic components of Citrus reticulata Blanco cv. Ponkan (PK), C. reticulata 'Unshiu' (CLU), and C. reticulata 'Wo Gan' (WG), respectively. Principal component analysis and partial least squares discriminant analysis indicated that C. reticulata Blanco 'Chun Jian' (CJ), PK, CLU, and C. reticulata 'Dahongpao' (DHP) were clustered together. DHP is a traditional Chinese medicine documented in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, suggesting that the chemical compositions of CJ, PK, and CLU may also have medicinal values similar to those of DHP. Moreover, DHP, PK, C. reticulata 'Ai Yuan 38'(AY38), CJ, C. reticulata 'Gan Ping'(GP), and C. reticulata 'Qing Jian'(QJ) displayed better antioxidant activities, recommending their use as additives in cosmetics and food. Correlation analysis suggested that some polyphenols including tangeritin, nobiletin, skullcapflavone II, genistein, caffeic acid, and isokaempferide were potential antioxidant compounds in citrus peel. The results of this study deepen our understanding of the differences in metabolites and antioxidant activities of different citrus peel varieties and ultimately provide guidance for the full and rational use of citrus peels.

Abstract:Flavonoids are the representative active substances of citrus with various biological activities and high nutritional value. In order to evaluate and utilize citrus flavonoids, isolation and purification are necessary steps. This manuscript reviewed the research advances in the extraction and purification of citrus flavonoids. The structure classification, the plant and nutritional functions, and the biosynthesis of citrus flavonoids were summarized. The characteristics of citrus flavonoids and the selection of separation strategies were explained. The technical system of extraction and purification of citrus flavonoids was systematically described. Finally, outlook and research directions were proposed.

Abstract:The recent millennium has witnessed a notable shift in consumer focus towards natural products for addressing lifestyle-related disorders, driven by their safety and cost-effectiveness. Nutraceuticals and functional foods play an imperative role by meeting nutritional needs and offering medicinal benefits. With increased scientific knowledge and awareness, the significance of a healthy lifestyle, including diet, in reducing disease risk is widely acknowledged, facilitating access to a diverse and safer diet for longevity. Plant-based foods rich in phytochemicals are increasingly popular and effectively utilized in disease management. Agricultural waste from plant-based foods is being recognized as a valuable source of nutraceuticals for dietary interventions. Citrus peels, known for their diverse flavonoids, are emerging as a promising health-promoting ingredient. Globally, citrus production yields approximately 15 million tons of by-products annually, highlighting the substantial potential for utilizing citrus waste in phyto-therapeutic and nutraceutical applications. Citrus peels are a rich source of flavonoids, with concentrations ranging from 2.5 to 5.5 g/100 g dry weight, depending on the citrus variety. The most abundant flavonoids in citrus peel include hesperidin and naringin, as well as essential oils rich in monoterpenes like limonene. The peel extracts exhibit high antioxidant capacity, with DPPH radical scavenging activities ranging from 70 to 90%, comparable to synthetic antioxidants like BHA and BHT. Additionally, the flavonoids present in citrus peel have been found to have antioxidant properties, which can help reduce oxidative stress by 30% and cardiovascular disease by 25%. Potent anti-inflammatory effects have also been demonstrated, reducing inflammatory markers such as IL-6 and TNF-α by up to 40% in cell culture studies. These findings highlight the potential of citrus peel as a valuable source of nutraceuticals in diet-based therapies.

Abstract:Citrus fruits, renowned for their abundant of phytochemicals and bioactive compounds, hold a prominent position as commercially grown fruits with health-promoting properties. In this context, tangerine peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, CRP) is garnering attention as a byproduct of citrus fruits. Within the framework of the circular economy, CRP has emerged as a focal point due to its potential health benefits. CRP, extracted from Citrus reticulata cv. and aged for over three years, has attracted increasing attention for its diverse health-promoting effects, including its anticancer, cardiovascular-protecting, gastrointestinal-modulating, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. Moreover, CRP positively impacts skeletal health and various physiological functions. This review delves into the therapeutic effects and molecular mechanisms of CRP. The substantial therapeutic potential of CRP highlights the need for further research into its applications in both food and medicine. As a value-added functional ingredient, CRP and its constituents are extensively utilized in the development of food and health supplements, such as teas, porridges, and traditional medicinal formulations.

Abstract:<p>In recent years, there has been a great interest in the conversion from agricultural waste to high value-added chemicals. Citrus peel is a low-cost and widely available waste resource that can be derived during citrus processing. In this study, we analyzed the composition of typical citrus peel and its hydrolysate. The hydrothermal conversion of citrus peel in different reaction conditions was also studied, and the optimum conditions for the preparation of levulinic acid and furfural were obtained. The maximum yield of levulinic acid was 21.9 wt% obtained in pure water, and the maximum yield of furfural was 9.1 wt% obtained in the water-DMSO solvent mixture. With the increase in the reaction temperature, the yield of furfural decreased while the yield of levulinic acid increased.</p>

Abstract:Citrus fruits are widely consumed worldwide; however, one of their primary uses is juice production, resulting in over 40 million tons of agro-industrial waste. Citrus peel is the main agro-industrial by-product in citrus production. In recent years, secondary metabolites of interest, mainly polyphenols such as hesperidin, have been identified in citrus peels. Currently, green alternatives like natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) based on choline chloride and glucose (Glu), combined with ultrasound-assisted extraction, are studied to obtain polyphenol-rich extracts with potential health applications. This study aims to evaluate the effect of: (1) molar ratios (MR) of 1:0.5, 1:1 or 1:2 mol/mol of choline chloride (ChCl):glucose (Glu); (2) the percentage of added water (WA: 50, 60 or 70%) to NADES; and (3) different citrus peels of Citrus aurantium (bitter orange), Citrus sinensis (sweet orange), and Citrus limon (lemon) used for extraction, on polyphenol profiles, total polyphenol content (TPC), and antioxidant capacity (Ax) of the extracts. The extracts were analyzed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) and evaluated using the Folin–Ciocalteu method for TPC and DPPH assay for quantifying AC. A factorial experimental design 33 was implemented. The extract obtained with an MR of 1:1 (ChCl:Glu) from Citrus aurantium peel exhibited the highest concentration of hesperidin (2003.37 ± 10.91 mg/100 g dry mass), whereas an MR of 1:2 (ChCl:Glu) exhibited the highest concentration of neohesperidin (1045.94 ± 1.27 mg/100 g dry mass), both using 60% WA. This extract also showed the highest antioxidant capacity, achieving 100% inhibition. On the other hand, the highest concentration of total phenolic content (TPC) (96.23 ± 0.83 mg GAE/100 g dry mass) was obtained using C. aurantium peel with an MR of 1:0.5 (ChCl:Glu) and 60% WA. The extracts also presented high concentrations of rutin and catechin. These findings highlight the potential of revalorizing citrus peels, particularly Citrus aurantium, and their extracts obtained with NADES for possible health applications.

Abstract:Objective:the efficiency of extracting minerals and phenolic compounds of Huyou peel and the antioxidant activity by hot water were studied.Methods:seven metal elements were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry;meanwhile,seven major phenolic acids and six citrus flavonoids were determined by HPLC.Also,Folin-Ciocalteu method,FRAP assay and DPPH free radical-scavenging assay were adopted to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of extract of Huyou peel.Results:hot water extract was efficient in extracting phenolic compounds and some minerals.The result of antioxidant activity assays indicated that hot water extract had almost the same activity as the methanol extract.Conclusion:scientifically speaking,traditional medicinal extraction conditions(100℃ for 30min)were efficient in extracting phenolic compounds and some minerals of citrus fruits.

Abstract:Citrus fruits contain plethora of bioactive compounds stored in edible as well as inedible part. Since, citrus fruits are processed mainly for juice, the residues are disposed in wastelands, hence, plenty of nutritional potential goes in vain. But if utilized wisely, the bioactive phytochemicals in citrus by-products have the ability to revolutionize the functional food industry. In the present review, the composition of citrus by-products in terms of bioactive components and their health benefits has been reviewed. Various extraction techniques used to extract these bioactives has been discussed and a brief overview of purification and utilization of the extracted compounds, in food and nutraceutical industry is also presented. Bioactives in citrus by-products are higher than the peeled fruit, which can be extracted, isolated and incorporated into food systems for development of health foods. From the studies reviewed, it was observed that research reported on utilization of citrus by-products is limited to mainly research labs; proper scale-up process and its adequate research commercialization is the need of hour to transform these bioactives into economical functional ingredients.

Response Surface Methodology As an Approach to Optimization of Flash-extraction of Flavonoids from Peel of Citrus Changshan-huyou

Abstract:The peels of citrus Changshan-huyou were used as the raw material to extract flavonoids by flash-extraction technology.Based on single factor experiments,extraction conditions such as solvent concentration,liquid/material ratio,and extraction time were optimized by response surface methodology.The results showed that each of the three extraction condi-tions affected flavonoid extraction significantly.The optimized conditions were as follows: 78% ethanol concentration,31:1 liquid/material ratio,and 95 s extraction time,resulting in an extraction efficiency of 4.37% for flavonoids.As a conclusion,flash-extraction is an effective and efficient method to extract flavonoids from peel of Citrus Changshan-huyou.
Recent advances in extraction technologies for recovery of bioactive compounds derived from fruit and vegetable waste peels: A review

Abstract:Fruits and vegetables are the most important commodities of trade value among horticultural produce. They are utilized as raw or processed, owing to the presence of health-promoting components. Significant quantities of waste are produced during fruits and vegetables processing that are majorly accounted by waste peels (∼90-92%). These wastes, however, are usually exceptionally abundant in bioactive molecules. Retrieving these valuable compounds is a core objective for the valorization of waste peel, besides making them a prevailing source of beneficial additives in food and pharmaceutical industry. The current review is focused on extraction of bioactive compounds derived from fruit and vegetable waste peels and highlights the supreme attractive conventional and non-conventional extraction techniques, such as microwave-assisted, ultrasound assisted, pulsed electric fields, pulsed ohmic heating, pressurized liquid extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, pressurized hot water, high hydrostatic pressure, dielectric barrier discharge plasma extraction, enzyme-assisted extraction and the application of "green" solvents say as well as their synergistic effects that have been applied to recover bioactive from waste peels. Superior yields achieved with non-conventional technologies were identified to be of chief interest, considering direct positive economic consequences. This review also emphasizes leveraging efficient, modern extraction technologies for valorizing abundantly available low-cost waste peel, to achieve economical substitutes, whilst safeguarding the environment and building a circular economy. It is supposed that the findings discussed though this review might be a valuable tool for fruit and vegetable processing industry to imply an economical and effectual sustainable extraction methods, converting waste peel by-product to a high added value functional product.

Abstract:Numerous previous studies have reported the extraction of flavonoids from orange peels, but a green and efficient approach suitable for the large-scale industrial production of flavonoids with versatile and excellent biological activities is still lacking. To tackle this issue, two easily accessible extraction methods, namely heat reflux (HR) and ultrasonication (US), coupled with four solvents (95% ethanol, 70% aqueous ethanol solution, methanol, and ethyl acetate), were used in the present study to extract flavonoids from navel orange peel, followed by chemical profile and biological activity (antioxidant, antibacterial, antiglycation, and enzyme inhibition) evaluation of all extracts obtained. The highest total phenolic content (TPC, 336.56 μmol GAE/g), total flavonoid content (TFC, 1194.31 μmol QE/g), flavonoid glycosides content (FGs, 461.82 mg/g), and the best antioxidant (IC 50 = 21.35 mg/L for ABTS assay) and α-glucosidase inhibition (IC 50 = 49.38 mg/L) activities, were found in the extract obtained by HR using ethyl acetate (EtOAc HR). However, the extract obtained by US with ethyl acetate (EtOAc US) contained the highest content of polymethoxyflavones (PMFs, 152.07 mg/g), and showed the most potent antiglycation (IC 50 = 71.26 mg/L), antibacterial (MIC = 0.078 mg/mL against MRSA), and acetylcholinesterase inhibition (AChE, IC 50 = 179.19 mg/L) activities compared to the other extracts. Furthermore, Pearson's correlation analysis was performed. This study provides simple and cost-effective methods for the preparation of orange peel extracts rich in flavonoids and versatile in biological activities, which will greatly contribute to the valorization of orange peel in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.

Background Value added production of polyphenolic rich citrus peels in the form of agricultural waste valorization and as a medicinal herb holds exceptional practicality. Potential applications as natural electron shuttles for bioenergy production further valorizes citrus peels in a bid to promote sustainable energy generation. This first-attempt study thus tended to decipher the stimulating effects of traditional medicinal processing methods to augment the electron mediating capabilities of Citrus reticulate peels. Methods Dried C. reticulate peels were subjected to stir-frying with individual adjuvants (e.g., vinegar, honey, soil, and bran) and analyzed via phytochemical analysis, antioxidant activity, and anti-inflammatory activity. Moreover, microbial fuel cells were used to evaluate the electron shuttling characteristics of the processed C. reticulate for bioenergy extraction. Significant findings It was indicated that solid adjuvants (e.g., bran and soil) coupled with stir-frying were found to increase the phytochemical content (e.g., total phenols, flavonoids, and condensed tannins) of C. reticulate peels. Consequently, according to comparative analysis, bran stir-fried extracts with optimal processing methods further stimulate the ES characteristics of C. reticulate for bioenergy extraction. Enhanced power generation capacity was attributed to the chemical and physical changes of the bioactive compounds as a result of the processing methods. Furthermore, principal component analysis reveals that FRAP assay and total flavonoid content serve as a preliminary investigation for revealing the electron transport characteristics of C. reticulate. Abstract:BACKGROUNDTangerine peel is rich in flavonoids, particularly hesperidin, which has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer biological activities. However, it is often wasted during citrus processing. The current common extraction method for hesperidin is solvent extraction, which has the characteristics of low extraction rate and high contamination. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of pulsed electric field-assisted alkali dissolution extraction, followed by an acidification precipitation method, on the extraction rate and structure of hesperidin from tangerine peel.RESULTSThe results showed that the selected factors (material/liquid ratio, electric field intensity and pulse number) had a significant effect on the extraction yield. An optimum condition of 66.00 mL g-1, 4.00 kV cm-1 and 35.00 pulses gave the maximum amount (669.38 mu g mL-1), which was consistent with the theoretically predicted value by software (672.10 mu g mL-1), indicating that the extraction process was feasible. In addition, the purified extract was further identified as hesperidin from UV and NMR spectra.CONCLUSIONAn appropriate strength of pulsed electric field-assisted alkali dissolution extraction followed by an acidification precipitation method can effectively improve the extraction rate of orange peel, and the purity of the extracted orange peel is higher. Compared with the traditional extraction, the pulsed electric field-assisted extraction method may be a potential technology for hesperidin extraction, which is beneficial for the high-value utilization of citrus resources. Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety

Abstract:Citrus grandis Osbeck, commonly known as "pomelo" or "shaddock," is the largest citrus fruit, the peel of which is a well-known agricultural residual waste. Pomelo peel offers a wide range of components such as essential oils, polysaccharides, and phytochemicals with potential food applications. Utilization of pomelo peel to recover these components is an important step toward agricultural sustainability. This review covers pomelo peel utilization opportunities beyond conventional composting and animal feed production, and critically examines value-added uses via the recovery of potentially bioactive components. The peel of pomelo accounts for approximately 30% of the total fruit weight and contains phytochemicals, including aroma-active volatiles, pectin, flavonoids, phenolic acids, carotenoids, coumarins, and polysaccharides. Recovery of these phytochemicals offers an opportunity for value-added utilization such as the development of enriched or functional foods and nutraceuticals. The health-promoting and therapeutic potential of pomelo peel extracts and isolated pure compounds have been evaluated through numerous in vitro and in vivo studies that revealed a wide range of bioactivities, including hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. Preclinical evidence highlights multifaceted molecular and signaling events that possibly underlie the said bioactive potential. Overall, the pomelo processing industry offers a great opportunity to recover or produce valuable products from the large amounts of residual wastes it generates. It is envisaged that a thorough understanding of the bioactive components of pomelo peel, their functional and nutraceutical applications, and mode of actions will benefit the food industry.
