Abstract:Due to the increasing pollution by petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs), it is an important task to develop eco-friendly and highly efficient methods for remediating petroleum-contaminated soils. In this study, bioremediation technology was applied to remediate PHs contaminated soils, and the bacterial community structure and physicochemical characteristics of the soil treated using different bioremediation regimens were analyzed. Compared with the control condition (S0), the PHs removal efficiency of biostimulation (S2) and bioaugmentation (S3) was increased significantly. Combined biostimulation with bioaugmentation (S4) had the highest PHs removal efficiency, up to 60.14 ± 4.12%. Among all the selected remediation strategies (S1–S4, S1: soil moisture content: 25–30%), the bacterial alpha-diversity was higher than in S0. The genera Acinetobacter, Escherichia-Shigella, Bacteroides, Microbacterium, and Parabacteroides were found to greatly contribute to PHs’ degradation. In the group S4, the PH-degraders and soil enzyme activity were higher than in the other remediation regimens, and these indices gradually decreased in the mid-to-later periods of all remediation tests. Additionally, the abundance of alkB and nah genes was increased by improving the environmental condition of the microorganism communities. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) had a positive correlation with total PHs degradation. This study offers insights into the microbial community response to environmental factors during bioremediation, which shows a promoting effect in enhancing the efficiency of PHs remediation.

Abstract:Abstract Leakage accidents occur frequently during the process of oil exploitation, storage and transportation. Effective management of the soil contaminated by it has become the focus of social attention. This paper introduces the oil pollution problem and physical, chemical and biological treatment methods. It focuses on the classification and application status of microbial remediation technology, and discusses the key factors that restrict bioremediation effects such as degrading microbial screening and colonization, and improving the bioavailability of petroleum hydrocarbons.

The ongoing research on bioremediation with petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria has shown tremendous promise of the technology due to its advantages of high efficiency and eco-friendly nature. To this end, studies have been carried out to identify a large amount of bacterial species with petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading ability for applications in bioremediation. Here, we present a brief perspective of some of the notable advances in oil degrading bacteria and the remedial actions for decontamination of water and soil along with recovering the spilled materials at oil sites.

Abstract:Bioremediation is considered as a cost-effective, efficient and free-of-secondary-pollution technology for petroleum pollution remediation. Due to the limitation of soil environmental conditions and the nature of petroleum pollutants, the insufficient number and the low growth rate of indigenous petroleum-degrading microorganisms in soil lead to long remediation cycle and poor remediation efficiency. Bioaugmentation can effectively improve the biodegradation efficiency. By supplying functional microbes or microbial consortia, immobilized microbes, surfactants and growth substrates, the remediation effect of indigenous microorganisms on petroleum pollutants in soil can be boosted. This article summarizes the reported petroleum-degrading microbes and the main factors influencing microbial remediation of petroleum contaminated soil. Moreover, this article discusses a variety of effective strategies to enhance the bioremediation efficiency, as well as future directions of bioaugmentation strategies.

Abstract:The global problem of petroleum contamination in soils seriously threatens environmental safety and human health. Current studies have successfully demonstrated the feasibility of bioelectrokinetic and bioelectrochemical remediation of petroleum-contaminated soils due to their easy implementation, environmental benignity, and enhanced removal efficiency compared to bioremediation. This paper reviewed recent progress and development associated with bioelectrokinetic and bioelectrochemical remediation of petroleum-contaminated soils. The working principles, removal efficiencies, affecting factors, and constraints of the two technologies were thoroughly summarized and discussed. The potentials, challenges, and future perspectives were also deliberated to shed light on how to overcome the barriers and realize widespread implementation on large scales of these two technologies.

Abstract:Land resources are the foundation of human’s survival and development, and it’s one of the most valuable natural resources of each country. In view of the serious problems of petroleum pollution to soil caused during the exploration and development processes, this article based on a large number of literature researches, firstly discussed the compositions and properties of petroleum contaminants, secondly investigated some restoration methods for the current situation of petroleum polluted soil, compared and analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of three kinds of bioremediation technologies. Finally, according to the deficiencies of previous research and existing problems, made an outlook of the physical and chemical remediation, bioremediation, and microbe-plant remediation, to provide some enlightenments for petroleum-contaminated soil remediation.
Enhancing soil petrochemical contaminant remediation through nutrient addition and exogenous bacterial introduction

Abstract:Biostimulation (providing favorable environmental conditions for microbial growth) and bioaugmentation (introducing exogenous microorganisms) are effective approaches in the bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soil. However, uncertainty remains in the effectiveness of these two approaches in practical application. In this study, we constructed mesocosms using petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. We compared the effects of adding nutrients, introducing exogenous bacterial degraders, and their combination on remediating petroleum contamination in the soil. Adding nutrients more effectively accelerated total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) degradation than other treatments in the initial 60 days' incubation. Despite both approaches stimulating bacterial richness, the community turnover caused by nutrient addition was gentler than bacterial degrader introduction. As TPH concentrations decreased, we observed a succession in microbial communities characterized by a decline in copiotrophic, fast-growing bacterial r-strategists with high rRNA operon (rrn) copy numbers. Ecological network analysis indicated that both nutrient addition and bacterial degrader introduction enhanced the complexity and stability of bacterial networks. Compared to the other treatment, the bacterial network with nutrient addition had more keystone species and a higher proportion of negative associations, factors that may enhance microbial community stability. Our study demonstrated that nutrient addition effectively regulates community succession and ecological interaction to accelerate the soil TPH degradation.

Abstract:Petroleum contamination remains a worldwide issue requiring cost-effective bioremediation techniques. However, establishing a universal bioremediation strategy for all types of oil-polluted sites is challenging. This difficulty arises from the heterogeneity of soil textures, the complexity of oil products, and the variations in local climate and environment across different oil-contaminated regions. Several factors can impede bioremediation efficacy: (i) differences in bioavailability and biodegradability between aliphatic and aromatic fractions of crude oil; (ii) inconsistencies between hydrocarbon removal efficiency and toxicity attenuation during remediation; (iii) varying adverse effect of aliphatic and aromatic fractions on soil microorganisms. This review examines the ecotoxicity risk of petroleum contamination to soil fauna and flora. It also discusses three primary bioremediation strategies: biostimulation with nutrients, bioaugmentation with petroleum degraders, and phytoremediation with plants. Based on current research and state-of-the-art challenges, we highlighted future research scopes should focus on (i) exploring the ecotoxicity differentiation of aliphatic and aromatic fractions of crude oil, (ii) establishing unified risk factors and indicators for evaluating oil pollution toxicity, (iii) determining the fate and transformation of aliphatic and aromatic fractions of crude oil using advanced analytical techniques, and (iv) developing combined bioremediation techniques that improve petroleum removal and ecotoxicity attenuation.

Abstract:Along with the rapid development of oil industries internationally, petroleum prospecting and exploitation activities are growing intensively. Especially in China, with the fastest economic growth in the world and shortage of petroleum resources, we are leading the practices of petroleum deep exploitation. Obviously, the risk of damage to the natural environment from these activities is high. Oil contamination in soils and groundwater is becoming a big issue along with pesticide pollution, which makes organic pollution prevention and control (OPPC) much more complex. In this paper, based on recent research on oil-contaminated soil at home and abroad, we make comments on the remediation technologies for polluted soil, emphasizing bioremediation techniques and degradation mechanisms in order to push forward research into bound organic pollution prevention and control (OPPC), especially in China.

Abstract:Petroleum contaminated soils have become a great concern worldwide. Bioremediation has been widely recognized as one of the most promising technologies and has played an important role in solving the issues of petroleum contaminated soils. In this study, a bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer based on Web of Science data was conducted to provide an overview on the field of bioremediation of petroleum contaminated soils. A total of 7575 articles were analyzed on various aspects of the publication characteristics, such as publication output, countries, institutions, journals, highly cited papers, and keywords. An evaluating indicator, h-index, was applied to characterize the publications. The pace of publishing in this field increased steadily over last 20 years. China accounted for the most publications (1476), followed by the United States (1032). The United States had the highest h-index (86) and also played a central role in the collaboration network among the most productive countries. The Chinese Academy of Sciences was the institution with the largest number of papers (347) and cooperative relations (52). Chemosphere was the most productive journal (360). Our findings indicate that the influence of developing countries has increased over the years, and researchers tend to publish articles in high-quality journals. At present, mainstream research is centered on biostimulation, bioaugmentation, and biosurfactant application. Combined pollution of petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals, microbial diversity monitoring, biosurfactant application, and biological combined remediation technology are considered future research hotspots.

Abstract:The bioremediation of soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) has emerged as a promising approach, with its effectiveness contingent upon various types of PHCs, i.e., crude oil, diesel, gasoline, and other petroleum products. Strategies like genetically modified microorganisms, nanotechnology, and bioaugmentation hold potential for enhancing remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination. The effectiveness of bioremediation relies on factors such as metabolite toxicity, microbial competition, and environmental conditions. Aerobic degradation involves enzymatic oxidative reactions, while bacterial anaerobic degradation employs reductive reactions with alternative electron acceptors. Algae employ monooxygenase and dioxygenase enzymes, breaking down PAHs through biodegradation and bioaccumulation, yielding hydroxylated and dihydroxylated intermediates. Fungi contribute via mycoremediation, using co-metabolism and monooxygenase enzymes to produce CO 2 and oxidized products. Ligninolytic fungi transform PAHs into water-soluble compounds, while non-ligninolytic fungi oxidize PAHs into arene oxides and phenols. Certain fungi produce biosurfactants enhancing degradation of less soluble, high molecular–weight PAHs. Successful bioremediation offers sustainable solutions to mitigate petroleum spills and environmental impacts. Monitoring and assessing strategy effectiveness are vital for optimizing biodegradation in petroleum-contaminated soils. This review presents insights and challenges in bioremediation, focusing on arable land safety and ecotoxicological concerns.

Abstract:As one type of the persistent organic pollutants, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are tremendously harmful to organisms. These compounds are easily absorbed onto soil particles and able to accumulate in soil after they are released into the environment. Bioremediation technology of PCBs-contaminated soils has become a research hotspot in recent years, and immobilized microorganism technique has high developing and applying value because of its unique advantages in environmental remediation. This paper reviewed the chief remediation technology of PCBs-contaminated soils and then analyzed the characteristics of immobilized microorganism technique and its research progress in remediation of organic polluted soil. Finally, the feasibility and problems of this technique in remediation of PCBs-contaminated soil were also discussed.

Abstract:The petroleum industry’s development has been supported by the demand for petroleum and its by-products. During extraction and transportation, however, oil will leak into the soil, destroying the structure and quality of the soil and even harming the health of plants and humans. Scientists are researching and developing remediation techniques to repair and re-control the afflicted environment due to the health risks and social implications of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination. Remediation of soil contamination produced by petroleum hydrocarbons, on the other hand, is a difficult and time-consuming job. Microbial remediation is a focus for soil remediation because of its convenience of use, lack of secondary contamination, and low cost. This review lists the types and capacities of microorganisms that have been investigated to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons. However, investigations have revealed that a single microbial remediation faces difficulties, such as inconsistent remediation effects and substantial environmental consequences. It is necessary to understand the composition and source of pollutants, the metabolic genes and pathways of microbial degradation of petroleum pollutants, and the internal and external aspects that influence remediation in order to select the optimal remediation treatment strategy. This review compares the degradation abilities of microbial–physical, chemical, and other combination remediation methods, and highlights the degradation capabilities and processes of the greatest microbe-biochar, microbe–nutrition, and microbe–plant technologies. This helps in evaluating and forecasting the chemical behavior of contaminants with both short- and long-term consequences. Although there are integrated remediation strategies for the removal of petroleum hydrocarbons, practical remediation remains difficult. The sources and quantities of petroleum pollutants, as well as their impacts on soil, plants, and humans, are discussed in this article. Following that, the focus shifted to the microbiological technique of degrading petroleum pollutants and the mechanism of the combined microbial method. Finally, the limitations of existing integrated microbiological techniques are highlighted.

Abstract:Petroleum is the most common global fossil fuel. It is a complex multi-component system mainly composed of various hydrocarbons such as alkanes, cycloalkanes, mono-, bi- and polyaromatic compounds, resins and asphaltenes. In spite of humanity's need for petroleum, it negatively affects the environment due to its toxicity. The ecological problem is especially serious at petroleum mining sites or during petroleum transportation. Since it is not possible to replace petroleum with less toxic fuel, ways to reduce the toxic impact of petroleum hydrocarbons on the environment need to be developed. This review addresses bioremediation, a biological approach to petroleum degradation, which is mainly performed by microbes. The pathways of degradation of alkanes, alkenes and aromatic hydrocarbons are presented in detail. The effects of temperature, aeration and the presence of biogenic elements on microbial degradation of petroleum are discussed. Plant–microbe interactions involved with the bioremediation of petroleum-polluted soils are specifically addressed. The data presented in this review point to the great potential of bioremediation practices for cleaning soils of petroleum.

Abstract:Petroleum contamination is considered as a major risk to the health of humans and environment. Biochars as low-cost and eco-friendly carbon materials, have been widely used for the removal of petroleum hydrocarbon in the environment. The purpose of this paper is to review the performance, mechanisms, and potential environmental toxicity of biochar, modified biochar and its integration use with other materials in petroleum contaminated soil and water. Specifically, the use of biochar in oil-contaminated water and soil as well as the factors that could influence the removal ability of biochar were systematically evaluated. In addition, the modification and integrated use of biochar for improving the removal efficiency were summarized from the aspects of sorption, biodegradation, chemical degradation, and reusability. Moreover, the functional impacts and associated ecotoxicity of pristine and modified biochars in various environments were demonstrated. Finally, some shortcoming of current approaches, and future research needs were provided for the future direction and challenges of modified biochar research. Overall, this paper gain insight into biochar application in petroleum remediation from the perspectives of performance enhancement and environmental sustainability.

Abstract:Four petroleum-contaminated soil samples at different degree were collected and used for isolation of petroleum-degrading bacterium. 28 petroleum-degrading strains were screened and identified as Brevibacterium, Pseudomonas, Micrococcus and Plesiomonas, respectively. There are more petroleum-degrading bacteria in heavy petroleum-contaminated soil than that in light contaminated soil, and Brevibacterium and Pseudomonas are dominant petroleum-degrading bacteria. A culture-independent molecular biological method was applied to analyze the genetic diversity of microbial communities of the four soil samples. Application of Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) in this study had provided new ideas for study of the microbial community in petroleum- contaminated soil. The genomic DNA of microbial community were extracted from the four soil samples in chemical method, which is based on lysis with a high salt extract ion buffer (1.5mol/L NaCl) and extend heating (2 to 3 h) of the soil suspension in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), CTAB and proteinase K. After purification of the genomic DNA with DNA gel recovery kits, the V3 variable fragments of genes coding for 16S rRNA were amplified by using specific primers. The result of agarose gel(1.5%) electrophoresis showed that the PCR products were about 230 bp. The amplified DNA fragments were then separated by paralleled DGGE with the denaturant (urea and formamide) from 30% to 60% to generate DNA fingerprints, nine major bands from DGGE profiles of the four samples were eluted from gel, then reamplified and sequenced. The results suggested that they belonged to 2 OTUs at 97% homo logy cutoff, 4 OTUs shared 97%-100% homology with known sequences in the database, while 3 OTUs had 91%-95% homology with known sequences. The isolates from 8 OTUs grouped together with some uncultured eubacteria in the database. A phylogenetic analysis of 9 OTUs classified them into three major groups: the OTU2 lineage and the other 8 OTUs lineage, the latter was classified further into 6 subgroups. The results indicated the diversity of soil microbes was significantly correlated with the degree of petroleum contamination. Owing to the selective pressure of petroleum pollutants, there was less diversity of microbes in heavy contaminated soil than that in light contaminated soil. Sequences alignment results showed Mycobacterium and Bacillus bacteria are dominant population in light contaminated soil and Flavobacterium and Azospira are dominant population in heavy contaminated soil. The results of GC-MS indicated the degree of contamination, especially the content of aromatic hydrocarbons affect the diversity of soil microbes. The petroleum-degrading strains isolated in this study will be good candidates for bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soils, and the analysis of the microbe diversity in petroleum-contaminated soils will offer a valid scientific basis for better bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soil.
