Abstract:One important aspect of the urban environment is its sound environment, in which the sound environment of street areas plays a significant role. In this research, we employed methods of subjective image evaluation and spatial analysis of soundscape formation, in studying the sound environments of urban street areas. In Saga City, Japan, we analysed the structure and main sound components of urban street areas, as well as the sound pressure levels through on-site investigation. Through image evaluation, we obtained people's ratings of each sound component in terms of “preference” and “congruence”. Simultaneously, we interviewed people on site for their evaluation of the sound environment using semantic differential profiles. Lastly, we performed a spatial analysis of the site, identifying the different types of street sound environment and their characteristics using cluster analysis, as well as noting the interaction of auditory image and visual factors. The methods presented by this research can help us understand the sound environment of urban street areas more comprehensively and vividly, and to point out a unique direction in the research of urban sound environment as well as the planning of urban street areas.

Abstract:This article analyzes urban images held by people living inBeijing after a short review of theoretical development in urban image space studies. Two basic methods were used to obtain data, one is cognitive mapping and the other is photo recognition. Five major factors that may influence the designative image are examined one by one. Hence we conclude that the frame constituted by roads, landmarks, nodes and function areas consist of the major public imaginary of Beijing. The Second Ring Road separates the “inner city area” from the “outer city area” and the quality of urban image is quite different in area from one part to the others. Based on the above conclusions and findings, some useful suggestions are made for urban planning and designing of Beijing.

Abstract:Through the analysis and comparison of the city image elements in two cities,Chang'an in the Tang Dynasty and Lin'an in the Southern Song Dynasty,the characteristics of city image pattern and the development mechanism based on two different planning institution of Lifang and Fangxiang are concluded.And it is summarised that with the collapse of Lifang system, changes in land use,functional layout and spatial pattern were the crucial reasons for the transition from the regional pattern to the road pattern.

Abstract:Urban spatial structure change is one of the most important parts of urban features, it comes from the process of the urbanization and has both inner filling and outward expansion. Under the support of high resolution remote sensing images and geographic information system (GIS), this article analyzes the urban spatial structure changes in the built-up area of Shijiazhuang city from 1994 to 2003. These analyses focus on the aspect of the urban land types and its area, the value of urban land assets and the density of land assets and its change rate, the various types of building area and the building floor area ratio (FAR), the urban population size(PS) and population density(PD) and its change rates. The study discloses the laws of urban spatial structure evolution in order to compile the master urban planning and administrate urban construction.

Abstract:With the rapid urbanization and evident transfer of urban development and planning system from a planned one to a market-oriented one,the Chinese urban planning has encountered an unprecedentedly complex situation.Analysis and research on urban systems with complexity theory have consequently become imperative.Through the analysis of design-oriented and strategy-oriented planning approaches,this study finds that the latter is more effective in a fast-changing urban environment.The major reason is that the strategy-oriented approach is more flexible and is capable of solving the numerous problems in a complex urban system.Therefore,it can multiply social welfare progressively and achieve higher cumulative system utility or better cumulative social welfare.This study finally argues that the design-oriented approach should be replaced by the strategy-oriented one in four ways:(1) the traditional time-driven and design-oriented plans should be replaced by event-driven and strategy-oriented plans;(2) the time range of plans should not be too short or too long,and should take full account of the validity and type of plans;(3) a giant city master plan should be replaced by several small-scale strategic plans;and(4) in addition to physical design,urban planning should include institutional design,such as the formal design of statutes and informal design of criteria.

Abstract:This study proposes a two-dimensional analytical framework based on urban spatial form and spatial service perspectives, utilizing data on buildings and points of interest (POIs). It integrates fishnet analysis, kernel density analysis, the categorization of POI functionalities, and mixture calculations to enhance our understanding of urban spatial form and function. Taking the main urban area of Zhengzhou as an example, this study identifies image elements that can describe urban spatial characteristics through the results of two-dimensional analysis and enriches the city image in the form of a portrait. The experimental findings demonstrate that the elements of the annular layer, functional landmarks, ring line boundaries, and special districts can fully convey the spatial picture of Zhengzhou City. The performance of the four types of image elements has a high degree of matching with the content of the urban spatial planning of Zhengzhou City, which can effectively identify the urban multi-center structure and development pattern. This paper explores and tests the development status of the city from a new perspective, which can provide an effective reference for the future planning and sustainable development of the city.

Abstract:The article examines the problem of the artistic evolution of the image of the city in Chinese fine art. The focus of the authors’ attention is the study of the main stages of the development of the urban landscape genre. The purpose of the article is the analysis of the main stages of the development of the urban landscape genre in Chinese art, as well as the study of its structural formalization and the formation of the repertoire from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. The subject of the research is Chinese art history discourse. The works of Chinese fine art of historical periods were used. The authors found out that the development of the urban landscape genre is connected with the general evolution of the Chinese cultural tradition and its visual forms. They are a constant factor influencing the formation of visual tradition. The article defines two stages of development of the urban landscape genre paradigm. The first continues from the time of the emergence of permanent pictorial forms (X century). Later, during the period of the Song dynasty (XII–XIII centuries) and the period of the Ming dynasty (XIV–XVII centuries), visual culture involved the urban landscape and urban everyday practices in the general artistic space of painting. In the context of the evolution of art during the Qing dynasty (XVII–XIX centuries), the urban landscape is represented for the first time with the help of genre features. According to the authors, these signs should be presented in the form of a combination of three components: 1) urban architectural landscape; 2) representations of typical models of urban life; 3) reproduction of typical city "cultural heroes". The authors prove that the evolution of the urban landscape genre at various stages of development is connected with the processes of self-awareness of Chinese art and the determination of the forms of its identity.
