Abstract:Research Background In the last 100 years in Australia alone there have been over 200 bushfires which have claimed the lives of over 800 people. Scientific research (CSIRO) has found that most people die in or close to their homes. With a drying climate and increasing development of peri urban areas, many more people will die unless we address the most critical issue which is housing design. While bushfires are a significant problem across the temperate and Mediterranean climate regions of the world, Australia is unique in that it has national and state regulatory frameworks that specifically address development in bushfire prone areas. The Australian Bushfire Building Conference (ABBC) is the only such event in the world that showcases the role of building design and innovation for bushfire prone areas. Dr Weir was a co-author of this important national event. Research Contribution The ABBC expands understandings of how building design can address this significant national and international problem. In doing so it has become - in two short years - both the nexus and the catalyst for a new field of research, both as scientific enquiry and design-led innovation. By putting theory into practice - it expands understandings of how cost-affordable housing can be built in the world's bushfire prone areas. Significant gaps in knowledge are addressed such as the application of performance based approaches to design, cost savings through optimisation of building components, and the integration of site design with building design and human behavior. Research Significance Information was disseminated over two days to over 2000 delegates who came from around the country from the fields of architecture, building design and housing construction, as well as State and Local Government fire agencies, government regulators and home owners. The event attracted national radio coverage as well as ABC TV news broadcasts which included a 7 O'clock news interview featuring Dr Weir. National Recognition: In October 2016 the event won the National Economic Development Australia (EDA) Award and was recognised by the New South Wales State Parliament as the winner of the NSW Resilient Australia Award. These awards recognise the Bushfire Building Conference as a catalyst for economic and community recovery and industry development. The event has also led to Dr Weir's invitation by the WA State Government to attend the inaugural Bushfire Risk Mitigation Summit (June 2017).
