Abstract:The courtyard lost its role in contemporary Egyptian architecture. Despite its importance in the family social life, the western model of the villa and townhouse is adopted. The author argues that presenting the courtyard as a climatic solution only is inaccurate in introducing the courtyard to local urbanism. The study adopted qualitative and quantitative approaches, collecting historic courtyards houses in Cairo analyzing their courtyard form, geometry, and introductory spatial sequences. Related literature was reviewed for collecting data and introducing criteria. The study sample analysis proved the strong relationship between the spatial territoriality, the house transition zone, the public right to assert the order of their built environment (through collective deliberation) and other forces, which are of great importance to the courtyard role and meanings.

Abstract:The paper interprets the “shape” and “meaning” of the new courtyard-style building from the two dimensions of architectural culture and architectural technology, as well as three levels of interpretation, construction, and cooperation. At the same time, it takes the building of “Waterside Cube” in Solar Decathlon China Competition as an example, which puts forward the concept of “Re-Traditional” and analyzes the generation logic and possibility of development of the new courtyard-style building which is combined with architectural culture and architectural aesthetics. Meanwhile, it puts forward the application of building technology and coping methods for rapid construction problems and finally summarizes the new ideas for the development of new courtyard-style buildings.

For this reason, from the aspect of life instead of modeling, we might be able to retrieve the meaning of life from the traditional architectures, instead of considering Chinese courtyard as a new Chinese symbol of spatial modeling.

Abstract:Climate change, resource depletion, and biodiversity decline have prompted the construction industry to seek more sustainable solutions. While high-tech and often high-cost technologies and equipment support progress toward more sustainable built form, the sustainability performance of historical and vernacular buildings should also be reviewed. These buildings may offer advantages that are “hidden in plain sight.” This research focuses on the use of building information modeling technology to model and simulate a historical Chinese courtyard building. The outcomes of the simulation were evaluated using the green building council of Australia’s green star rating criteria to provide quantitative results. At the same time, relevant literature was explored to obtain a qualitative perspective. The final results indicate that courtyard buildings can serve as useful references for contemporary building design and retrofitting. The choice of building materials offers designers effective ideas for designing sustainable buildings. Courtyards can enhance ventilation, cooling, humidity control, light exposure, and connectivity to outdoor areas while ensuring privacy. In developing countries, this approach may be a viable way to promote sustainable development and energy conservation.

Abstract:Courtyard space serves as the soul of traditional residences in Southern China, representing a gem in traditional Chinese architecture. Courtyards play a multifaceted role in architecture, including functions such as lighting, ventilation, water collection, solar radiation, and environmental beautification. This paper, building upon previous research and theoretical foundations, takes three types of courtyards in "Kong House" as the research subjects. Through methods like data collection, literature analysis, questionnaire surveys, and eye-tracking experiments, the study investigates the spatial experience of courtyard spaces in traditional residences. It quantitatively validates the design theory of courtyard spaces, analyzes the similarities and differences in spatial experiences among comprehensive courtyards, landscape courtyards, and functional courtyards, and concludes the study. The experiments indicate that incorporating courtyard spaces in traditional residences can effectively influence human behavior patterns and perceptual choices. Comprehensive courtyards typically stimulate more exploration and lingering behaviors. The combination of virtual reality and eye-tracking experiments provides valuable visual information and statistical data for analyzing human behavior and evaluating traditional residential design schemes.

Abstract:The courtyard houses have an important place in the history of architecture. They play a vital role in the social and environmental sustainability of that place. This paper aims to identify the significance of courtyards in composite climate by analyzing the associated space, function, courtyard configuration, and socio-cultural connections. Accordingly, eight courtyard houses of Lucknow and Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh, India) were selected for analysis based on their heritage value (in terms of age) and placement in the courtyard. Drawings of these houses were prepared through a site survey. Illumination data in the courtyard and adjacent spaces was measured through a lux meter. Various parameters of the courtyard, such as placement, size (length, breadth, and height), and connection to adjacent spaces, were analyzed through the above-collected data. The analysis concluded that the courtyard houses with NS orientation with significant height have good thermal comfort and daylight in the adjacent spaces.

Abstract:In recent decades, China has witnessed a miracle of rapid urbanisation, and the development of traditional Chinese architecture has faced challenges as well as opportunities. Improper planning has undermined the well-being of residents, and many historic buildings have been demolished. Under the slogan of “high-quality urban development”, the value of traditional architecture is rarely mentioned. Therefore, research into architectural heritage and urban sustainability is necessary. This study focuses on Shandong Province in China, the birthplace of Confucianism and, to a large extent, the long history of Chinese culture. By studying courtyard architecture under the influence of Confucianism, the aim is to reveal the cultural profile of the new urban era while critiquing the problems in the urban planning process. The study adopts a qualitative method based on the researcher's field investigation and data collection, as well as one-on-one interviews with experts, to collate typical cases for analysis. In addition, this study also intervenes from a narrative perspective to facilitate the exploration of the value of architecture. The findings suggest that courtyard architecture embodies Chinese aesthetic and philosophical thinking, has theoretical and practical implications for living environments, communities, and urban development, and brings new insights that can better achieve sustainable goals while expanding the existing knowledge of architecture and courtyards.

Abstract:Abstract Buildings are categorised into various types such as residential, educational, assembly and etc. This paper is described one type of assembly building namely mosque and its elements. The mosque is comprising of several elements such as courtyard, prayer hall, arcades, minaret, dome, the ablution rooms and toilets. It should be designed to accommodate the worshipper to feel comfortable and humble in the presence of God while performing the ‘solah’. In tropical region, especially in Malaysia; the existence of the courtyard in traditional mosques is still questionable whether it has fully considered the environmental benefits or it is simply a trend adopted from the Middle East. Previous studies have found that the purpose of having a courtyard inside a mosque is either for spatial reasons or it may be negligible. Hence, this study is conducted to understand the courtyard in a specificity of architectural style and the effects on spatial organization in traditional mosque design. The observation methods are used at the fieldwork in selected traditional mosques. From the observation two types of building indicator of space and form are identified for better understanding of courtyard characteristics of selected traditional mosques.

Abstract:Architecture itself is a witness to social and cultural development, so the study on it should not only focus on the material symbols but also pay more attention to the multiple roles played by its material space in a specific social–cultural construction from multiple perspectives, residential buildings are no exception. Based on the dialectical analysis of Levi Strauss's house society concept and Lefebvre's spatial ternary theory, this paper attempts to sort out the triple theory of the house space; taking Chinese well-preserved Guanzhong Narrow Courtyard in the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368–1912) as an example, it starts from the three aspects of housing space which are material presentation, reconstruction and innovation, and potential circulating capital in the social production and reproduction to explore a qualitative research of the house space, and tries to reappear the metaphorical relationship between housing space of Chinese Guanzhong Narrow Courtyard and social–cultural construction in a historical period of social and cultural development, and explain its profound connotation; from the perspective of sociology, it provides inspiration and lays a foundation for the research on the design of the house space in the transition from the traditional society to the modern society in the specific area.

Abstract:The courtyard becomes a vital element that commonly applied in tropical buildings for its environmental, social and therapeutic potentials. However, effort to examine its usage and design variants is limited. This paper focuses on the application of courtyards in the context of Malaysian hospitals. Thirty-two courtyards were inventoried. Besides the courtyard functions, design variants were recorded in terms of its form and aspect ratio, courtyard orientation and physical features. The results revealed that the courtyards in the Malaysian hospitals buildings are creatively manipulated. Abstract:The design of the contemporary courtyard is different from that of the traditional garden, but the practices based on the abstract relationships of the traditional garden represent a form of cultural continuity. The number of museum courtyard designs continues to rise in eastern China, which has outstanding traditional gardens and a rich historical culture. This paper aims to put forward the design strategies of museum courtyards of different sizes in eastern China. First, the basic data of 60 cases are collected from a wide range of sources and analysed statistically. Secondly, the design concepts and spatial organisation are examined in combination with field research, and thirdly, interviews with several architects are considered. Finally, this paper concludes that the traditional folk houses, villages and especially gardens in eastern China exert a profound influence on the design of the contemporary museum courtyard. The design of the museum courtyard reflects the response to the traditional context in three dimensions: spatial layout, spatial scale, and spatial sequence. This paper describes the specific design strategies of the museum courtyard as they echo the traditional context across settings of three different sizes: less than 5,000 m2, between 5,000–10,000 m2, and greater than 10,000 m2.

Abstract:The article analyzes and evaluates the adjacent spaces in residential areas. A survey of about a hundred yards of Far Eastern cities (Khabarovsk, Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk) was conducted. Using the methods of full-scale survey and comparative analysis, positive and negative characteristics are determined in terms of aesthetics, functions and convenience for residents, the conditions of visual comfort on the selected site are revealed. The study is carried out from the point of view of architectural composition and functional organization. The study includes an analytical part, which presents the characteristics of house spaces and a practical one, which contains recommendations for improving the aesthetic qualities of the courtyard environment. The novelty of the research lies in the fact that for the first time such an analysis is carried out in the process of architectural design training in order to understand the special importance of aesthetic comfort in an urban residential environment. The relevance of the research is determined by the need to introduce theoretical research into design practice for further development of the courtyard of an apartment building: from reasonable functional organization and simple physical comfort - to aesthetic comfort, to artistic expressiveness of space and a unique sense of place identity. The study was conducted by the Institute of Architecture and Design of Pacific State University as part of the training courses "Environmental factors in Design" and "Aesthetics of Architecture and Design".
Effects of the Courtyard’s Geometry in Dig Pit Underground Dwellings on the Room’s Daylighting Performance

Abstract:Courtyard vernacular underground dwellings most commonly called “dig pit houses”, have been for centuries a shelter for the human kind. Despite their noticeable energy saving properties and security enhancing design features, they present several disadvantages related to indoor environment quality such as poor indoor natural daylighting. The dig pit in these typologies is the main design feature that allows natural light into the rooms. In this paper the effect of changing the courtyard’s geometry on the daylighting performance inside the rooms is investigated by the mean of computer simulations using Ecotect-RADIANCE software pack. The findings of this study show that dimensions corresponding to a WI (Well Index) = 0.5 result in better daylighting performance inside the rooms. Moreover, it shows that increasing the number of wall surfaces on the courtyard surface tend to engender a noticeable improvement of the room’s daylighting.

Abstract:With the change of time and the rapid and continuous development of economy and society, the traditional residential buildings in China have some common but slightly different characteristics in some parts. From individual building components to patio layout, all formed to adapt to the changes of local tribal customs. The characteristics of compound courtyard form are shown in various patterns from urban to rural courtyards. Courtyard housing can make people feel satisfied with the quality of life level and spatial design function requirements. As a kind of high-end commodity, the House has a high value and a long life. In the ordinary family, the house is usually the most valuable property, and people live in the house, which is closely related to their daily life. Therefore, it is very important whether the residential space function and the use characteristic can satisfy the customer request, the function design will have the direct influence to the entire space combination, novel and Innovative Space Design to meet the modern people on the high level of the requirements of the house, thus meeting the needs of customers will further expand the growth of space portfolio. Therefore, this paper briefly analyzes the courtyard house from the perspective of space combination theory.
