Abstract:The ultrashort-sludge retention time activate sludge (USAS) process is considered to be promising in recovering energy and resource from the wastewater. In this study, we developed five USAS systems (with SRT of 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 4 d), and conducted researches on the nitrogen and phosphorus removal as well as the microbial community in the USAS systems. The results showed that the activated sludge from the USAS system with shorter SRT can capture more organic matter from the wastewater, with the organic matter mineralization rate, capture rate, and loss rate of 12.9%-45.9%, 42.4%-62.3% and 18.2%-24.8%, respectively. Besides, the ammonia oxidization only took place in the USAS system with SRT of 3 d and 4 d, and the USAS systems with different SRTs all showed the ability of phosphorus removal. The microbial community analysis found that as SRT increased, the relative abundance of the nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria (such as Thauera ) increased. In addition, the heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria ( Pseudonocardiaceae ) attributed to the accumulation of nitrite, and the inhibition of nitrite lead to a poor phosphorus removal effect in the USAS system with 3 d and 4 d SRT, Thauera and Zooglea are statistically related to the nitrogen removal in the USAS system.
