Abstract:It has been found that automobile exhaust and road dust have become one of the biggest sources of PM2.5 in the city, and that plant intercept is considered to be an effective means of removing atmospheric particulate matter. In order to investigate the effect of landscape plants on the concentration of PM2.5, samples were collected from both sides of the road along the parallel and vertical fifth-ring road in the Olympic Forest Park, Beijing, in September when there is the most luxuriant vegetation and less rainfall, and an Atmospheric Dispersion Modeling System (ADMS) was used to simulate the diffusion of pollution. North fifth-ring road is one of the busiest roads in Beijing, with more than 5000 vehicles per hour in one direction during the daytime (7:00—18:00). Results showed that the mass concentration of PM2.5was (84.3±23.6), (62.1±12.7), (246.1±60.5)μg·m-3 for sunny days, after rainy days and polluted days, respectively. There was no significant difference in the concentration of PM2.5 among the monitoring points of the vertical and the parallel compared to the north fifth-ring road, but the PM2.5 concentration decreased slightly from south to north in the local weak southerly wind conditions. The PM2.5 emitted by automobile exhaust decreased exponentially with the distance from the road. Results from ADMS showed that the PM2.5, emitted by automobile exhaust on sunny days and polluted days, contributed not more than 2% to the ambient atmospheric PM2.5 mass concentration directly. However, after rainy days, the contribution was much greater, up to 25%. The effect of landscape plants on reducing PM2.5concentration from vehicle emission was not significant, the main role of which was to separate individual and to reduce the mass concentration of PM2.5 through atmospheric dilution.
