Abstract:The effects of soil cadmium (0.5~50 mg·kg-1) on growth and content of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, soluble sugar, starch, soluble protein, and proline in Aegiceras conrniculatum seedlings were studied. The results showed that the growth of seedlings were improved in the lower concentration of cadmium (0.5 mg·kg-1) over the 160 d treatment period, heights and fresh weight were sig- nificantly higher than the control, but root lengths and chlorophyll contents increasing were not obvious. Under the high concentra- tion stress(50 mg·kg-1), these parameters decreased significantly compare to control. Starch contents trended of drop with increasing cadmium concentration except lower concentration treatment (0.5 mg·kg-1). From 5 to 50 mg·kg-1 treatments, increasing contents of soluble sugar and protein as well as praline were significantly, which correlated plus with cadmium concentration. This study indi- cated the accumulation of osmoprotectants was the key response of Aegiceras conrniculatum seedlings under cadmium stress, and it could be characterized as an indicator of cadmium tolerance.
