Abstract:Post-earthquake fire causes significant harm to mankind. Referring to the analysis of factors hindering the fire from spreading and previous data investigated the relation between fire hindrance distance and building structure and its fireproof category is determined. Then, the method and flowchart of post-earthquake fire spreading area is made based on the fire hindrance distance. Lastly, the method was exemplified in Shantou city. The study of post-earthquake fire spreading area could provide criteria for decision making in emergency rescue.

Abstract:The harm of post-earthquake fire to human beings is significant. During San Francisco Earthquake on April 8,1906, the loss due to post-earthquake fire is 10 times of the direct loss due to earthquake itself. During Tokyo Earthquake in 1923, 447 000 houses were burned and 56,000 people died from fire following earthquake. it is therefore important to assemble limited fire prevention power in short time to prevent the fire after the occurring of fire. To achieve this, the dynamic simulation system of post-earthquake fire based on ArcInfo was developed by employing of Huygens' principle. The system was applied in a project in Shan Tou, Guangdong province, and got good results that can be used for the plan of development of the city, and for the making of emergency response plan for the city. The algorithms employed in the system and system architecture weere given in details in the paper. A practiced example is also given.

Abstract:Post-earthquake fire causes great harm to mankind. During the Tokyo Earthquake in 1923, 447000 houses were burned and 56000 people died from fires following the earthquake. The probability of building fire after earthquake is calculated, on which the risk of building fire is simulated. The risk simulation of building fire after earthquake based on GIS is useful in preventing the fire of buildings after the earthquake, and providing prompt disaster relief when the fire occurs.
An Integrated Software System for the Simulation of Urban Post-earthquake Fires Based on GIS

Abstract:Although post-earthquake fire is a kind of relatively infrequent urban disaster, its potential destruction has attracted the concerns of urban disaster mitigators. In order to resist this disaster, a GIS-based software system for the simulation of urban post-earthquake fires was built by the authors for assisting mitigators in predicting the occurrence, spread, suppression and destruction of post-earthquake fires. This software system is composed of four main parts, i.e. spatial database, model library, simulation center and outputs. Spatial database provides basic data sources for simulation by collecting and organizing the spatial and no-spatial data closely related with post-earthquake fires. Model library is the core of system storing three models, i.e. ignition model, fire-spread model and fire-suppression model, which correspond to three key steps of post-earthquake fires respectively. As the operation center of system, simulation center integrates data and models to fulfill simulation of post-earthquake fires. After simulation, various statistical results are output from simulation center in form of table, map and report. These results will provide scientific supports for decision-making of disaster mitigation.

Abstract:According to two main phases of post-earthquake fires,the potential risk assessment of urban post-earthquake fire can be divided into two parts,i.e.ignition risk assessment and fire-spread risk assessment.Through(analysis,) the authors extracted several key factors correlated with ignition following earthquake and subsequent fire-spread,and further organized them to build an integrated framework of risk assessment.At each level of framework,the AHP method was employed in computing indices' relative weights.Furthermore,in order to reflect the regional variety of urban post-earthquake fire risk,regular grid replaced street block as basic assessment element,which overcomes the shortcoming that the assessment based on street block results in the coarser assessment.In sum,through this risk assessment,the dangerous regions and periods can be finally obtained to direct the decision-making in urban planning for preventing and mitigating post-earthquake fire disaster.

Abstract:Wenchuan in Sichuan Province, China, was hit by an 8.0 magnitude earthquake on 12 May 2008. Thousands of buildings were destroyed and thousands of people were hurt. History tells us that after earthquakes, floods and other natural disaster, infectious diseases often outbreaks. In this study, with the help of spatial information technologies including remote sensing and geography information system, we acquired environmental factors including population, earthquake intensity, route distance, direct distance, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, Normalized Difference Water Index, and Digital Elevation Model for each township in Anxian after earthquake. Then we constructed a Back Propagation Neural Network to train environmental factors and incidence of communicable diseases, and predicted the incidence of communicable diseases. The results showed that incidence of communicable diseases after earthquake could be predicted using remote sensing to some extent.

Abstract:Earthquakes may induce severe fire disasters in urban regions. Different fire following earthquake (FFE) models have been proposed and developing worldwide. However, the high-fidelity visualization of conflagration in an urban region is rarely mentioned in the existing models. The decision makers in government departments or fire departments are generally not professionals with respect to earthquake engineering. As a result, a high-fidelity visualization of conflagration is more understandable for such nonprofessional users. In this work, a high-fidelity visualization for FFE is presented for the simulation of fire spread and smoke effects, based on the OpenSceneGraph (OSG) 3D graphics toolkit and fire dynamic simulator (FDS) software. Specifically, the development of building burning states and fire spread in the entire region can be clearly shown via changing the color contours of the building, using OSG toolkit. The motions of smoke particles can be directly computed by FDS using the large-eddy simulation, which follows the laws of physics and generates a realistic smoke diffusion. A case study of downtown Taiyuan City with 44,152 buildings is performed. The results show that the FFE scene can be displayed realistically. The proposed high-fidelity visualization can help decision makers understand the overall situation of fire spread area and direction, estimate the sub-regions with high risks of FFE, and make decisions regarding fire rescue and fire protection planning. It can also serve as important technical supports for virtual reality-based fire disaster training.

Abstract:Forest fire prevention is an important part of disaster prevention and mitigation in China.The increasing understanding of fire behavior and the development of geographic information system(GIS) methods have made computer simulations an important tool for forest fire spread prediction and firefighting.This paper describes a forest fire starting from a point source.After the initial spread rate from the ignition point was calculated,the ellipse parameters and fire spread rate were calculated based on Huygens principle.The results were combined with terrain data in a simulation visualized in a geographic information system model.Fire spread predictions were obtained with and without wind with different fire locations.The results show how fires spread faster on sharp slopes than on modest slopes;and how the wind speed has a crucial influence on the forest fire spread while the wind direction has little influence.

Abstract:After the occurrences of large-scale earthquakes, secondary damage (e.g., fire following earthquake) can result in tremendous losses of life, properties, and buildings. To reduce these disaster risks, fire following earthquake assessment methods composed of ignition and fire-burned rate estimation models have been utilized. However, previous methods required for large amounts of building and GIS information, and complex modeling and analysis processes, leading to significant time consumption. This paper proposed a static analysis-based rapid fire following earthquake assessment method using simple information and implemented it in Pohang City, South Korea. Based on previous studies, the best-fit model for the ignition rate estimation was selected, and a cluster-based fire-burned rate estimation model was developed using simple building information (e.g., construction year, building occupancy, story, and total floor area) from the public building database (e.g., building registration data). For the fire-burned rate estimation model, fire-resistant structure types were defined using simple building information, and this was utilized to generate clusters of buildings at a regional level by comparing fire-spread distances for each fire-resistant structure type with adjacent distances among the buildings. This proposed method was applied to Pohang City, South Korea, and validated as follows: (1) the selected ignition rate model predicted similar ignition numbers to the actual reported number (actual number of ignitions = 4 vs. predicted number of ignitions = 3), and (2) the fire-burned rate model estimated fire-burned areas with a marginal difference compared to the fire spread simulation (fire-burned area using the proposed model = 13,703.6 m 2 vs. results of fire spread simulation = 16,800.0 m 2 , with an error of approximately 18%).

Abstract:In this paper, urban mass fire-spread would be studied and modeled by the authors. Firstly, the authors analyzed the mechanisms of urban mass fire-spread deeply and then proposed an empirical-and-physical fire-spread model. This model is composed of two sub-models, one is the simplified model of fire development in a single building, and another is the model of inter-building fire-spread. In order to simplify the complicated process of fire-spread in rooms, the former sub-model only judges the building's fire stages, i.e. ignition, flashover, full-development and collapse, and estimates their corresponding physical parameters. According to the mechanisms of inter-building fire-spread, the latter sub-model formulates two main fire-spread ways, i.e. thermal radiation and thermal plume heating, respectively by simplifying and modifying pervious theory-based models. Additionally, it also quantifies the weather conditions which have great effect on inter-building fire-spread. Finally, the authors proposed a GIS-based simulation scheme for urban mass fire-spread and employed it in a specific ignition near to Gaoqiao Hospital after Hansin earthquake (1995, Japan) for fire-spread simulation. From the comparison between the simulated results and real investigation it is proved that the models for urban mass fire-spread have satisfying effectiveness.

Abstract:Rainfall is the main inducing-factor of geological disaster in Jiangxi Province.This paper summarizes the research on geological hazards and proposes a method for the rainfall-induced landslides prediction.A system of forecasting and early-warning geological hazards were developed based on this method.The system manages enormous relative data which includes landslide data,geologic data,geomorphologic data,rainfall data and documents of geological hazards via spatial database engine.Based on WebGIS technology,the system implements and provides following functions : issue of prediction map of landslide hazards probability,information query,spatial localization and spatial overlapping,forecasted information feedback and so on.
Forecast Zoning of Forest Fire Occurrence: A Case Study in Southern China

Abstract:Forest fires in the southern region of China pose significant threats to ecological balance, human safety, and socio-economic stability. Forecast zoning the occurrence of these fires is crucial for timely and effective response measures. This study employs the random forest algorithm and geospatial analysis, including kernel density and standard deviation ellipse methods, to predict forest fire occurrences. Historical fire data analysis reveals noteworthy findings: (i) Decreasing Trend in Forest Fires: The annual forest fire count in the southern region exhibits a decreasing trend from 2001 to 2019, indicating a gradual reduction in fire incidence. Spatial autocorrelation in fire point distribution is notably observed. (ii) Excellent Performance of Prediction Model: The constructed forest fire prediction model demonstrates outstanding performance metrics, achieving high accuracy, precision, recall, F1-scores, and AUC on the testing dataset. (iii) Seasonal Variations in High-Risk Areas: The probability of high-risk areas for forest fires in the southern region shows seasonal variations across different months. Notably, March to May sees increased risk in Guangxi, Guangdong, Hunan, and Fujian. June to August concentrates risk in Hunan and Jiangxi. September to November and December to February have distinct risk zones. These findings offer detailed insights into the seasonal variations of fire risk, providing a scientific basis for the prevention and control of forest fires in the southern region of China.

Abstract:This work proposes a framework for the physics-based simulation and high-fidelity visualization of fire following earthquake (FFE) considering building seismic damage. The seismic damage of regional buildings is simulated using multiple degree-of-freedom building models in conjunction with nonlinear time-history analysis. In parallel, a high-fidelity visualization is presented to simulate fire spread and smoke effects. A case study of downtown Taiyuan with 44,152 buildings is performed. The results show that the influence of different ground motions and building seismic resistances on fire ignition and fire spread can be taken into account and that the FFE scene can be displayed realistically.

Abstract:Many Chinese cities currently are facing increased urban fire risks particularly at places such as urban villages, high-rise buildings and large warehouses. Using a unique historical fire incident dataset (2002-2013), this paper is intended to explore the urban fire dynamics and its association with urban growth in Nanjing, China, with a geographical information system (GIS)-based spatial analytics and remote sensing (RS) techniques. A new method is proposed to define a range of fire hot spots characterizing different phases of fire incident evolution, which are compared with the urban growth in the same periods. The results suggest that the fire events have been largely concentrated in the city proper and meanwhile expanding towards the suburbs, which has a similar temporal trend to the growth of population and urban land at the city level particularly since 2008. Most intensifying and persistent fire hot spots are found in the central districts, which have limited urban expansion but high population densities. Most new hot spots are located in the suburban districts, which have seen both rapid population growth and urban expansion in recent years. However, the analysis at a finer spatial scale (500 m x 500 m) shows no evidences of an explicit connection between the locations of new fire hot spots and recently developed urban land. The findings can inform future urban and emergency planning with respect to the deployment of fire and rescue resources, ultimately improving urban fire safety.

Abstract:Forest fire is a usual disaster in real life, causing huge live, property and ecology losses. A risk assessment model to identify, classify and map forest fire risk areas is presented in this paper. This model considers three parts, i.e. hazards identification, vulnerability analysis, and emergency response capacity analysis. The first part concentrates on several influence factors in forest fires, including the land use, topography and meteorology where the forest situate. The second part is made up of population density and value of forest resources. The forest fire response capacity including forest fire-brigade, watch-tower and helicopter water source is the third part. Through GIS spatial analytical procedure, the forest fire risk ranging from high to low is derived, according to its sensitivity to fire or fire-inducing capability. Spatial analyst is used to combine some single influence factors in risk maps to display the total fire risk map. The weight to each factor is determined by Grey Relativity Analysis (GRA). This model is illustrated with a case study of forest fire risk of area in China. It is suggested that risk mapping is helpful for the forest fire management to minimize forest fire hazard.

Abstract:According to the statistical data of forest fire in China in recent years, the losses caused by forest fires are very serious. This article firstly used GM(1,1) model to forecast the trend of forest fire occurred in China. The results showed that the total number of forest fires and disaster area in China still showed increased trends, the number of great fire and catastrophic fire showed decreased trends. Then Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) was applied to analyze each factor which affects forest fire occurrence. By calculating its consolidated weights, the extent of its impact was determined. Finally, according to the results of risk analysis, some reasonable measurements were brought forward. This is good for the prevention of forest fire and can decrease the losses caused by fire.

Abstract:Forecasting the fire risk is of great importance to fire prevention deployments in a city, which can reduce loss even deaths caused by fires. However, it is very challenging because fires are influenced by many complex factors, including spatial correlations, temporal dependencies, even the mixture of these two and external factors. Firstly, the fire risk of a region is influenced by temporal effect of internal factors (e.g., the historical fire risk records) and temporal effect of external factors (e.g., weather). Secondly, a region's fire risk is not only influenced by its inherent geospatial attributes (e.g., POIs) but also dependent on other regions in spatial. To address these challenges, we propose a machine learning approach to forecast the fire risk, entitled NeuroFire. NeuroFire can represent internal and external temporal effect then combine the temporal representation and spatial dependencies by a spatial-temporal loss function. Experimental evaluations on real-world datasets show that our NeuroFire outperforms 9 baselines, demonstrating the performance of our approach by several visualizations. Moreover, we implement a citywide fire forecasting system named CityGuard to display the analysis and forecasting results, which can assist the fire rescue department in deploying fire prevention.
