Abstract:The concentration of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) listed for prior control by US EPA in soil sampled from Dagang Oil Field were investigated by gas chromatography equipped with mass spectrometry (GC/MS) . This results were made used to to evaluate the level of soil contamination and potential health risks to human beings. In addition, relative concentrations of PAH compounds with different benzene rings and principal component analysis were used to identify the possible sources of PAHs in the soil. Results showed that all 16 PAHs were detected. The total concentration of 16 PAHs ranged from 2 636.2 to 11 759.6 ng/g, which was considered heavily contaminated according to the criteria proposed by Maliszewska-Kordybach to evaluate the level of soil contamination. PAHs pollutants in soil mainly originated from petroleum contamination, followed by the release of coal combustion. Moreover, the benzo (a) pyrene (Bap) toxicity equivalent quantity for 16 PAHs (Σ16 TEQBap) in the soil from point sources exceeded Canadian soil quality guidelines, indicating unacceptable ecological risks to biota and human beings.
