Abstract:Water resources are one of the key natural resources in the world in 21st century. While developing economy, sustainable and rational utilization of water resources must be considered. The problems of the shortage of water resources become more and more serious along with the rapid economic development in China. Currently more than 400 cities and towns are in shortage of water in China, the annual shortage of water is as high as 6.0×10~9 m~3, and it is estimated that it will be up to 5.0×10~(10) in 2030. However, the annual volume of discharged urban wastewater is about 4.14×10~(10) m~3, the proportion of treated urban wastewater is only 30%, most of which is discharged without using, and the proportion of reused treated urban wastewater is only 10%. Treated urban wastewater is a great potential water source in urban water supply, therefore, it has currently becomes as a hot domain in urban water supply how to develop the new practical ways of treating and reusing urban wastewater so as to achieve the scientific transition and rational utilization of urban wastewater resources, guarantee the safe urban water supply, alleviate the contradiction between water consumption and water supply, and achieve gradually the coordinative development of economy, society, resources and environment. In this paper, the actuality of reusing urban wastewater is reviewed, the ways of reusing urban wastewater are analyzed, and some measures for reusing urban wastewater are put forward. The measures are as follows: (1) To increase the public's awareness of saving water and reusing treated urban wastewater and let the public understand that the urban wastewater is a kind of reliable and reusable water resources, and to reuse treated urban wastewater is an effective measure to alleviate the shortage of water resources and achieve sustainable utilization of water resources; (2) To enhance the construction of infrastructure of urban wastewater treatment by reforming the mechanism of urban wastewater treatment and raising funds from multiple ways; (3) To increase water price and treated wastewater consumption; (4) To increase the consumers with high water consumption to reuse treated urban wastewater.
