Abstract:With the fast urbanization, the urban land has become more and more scarce and the development scale of urban underground space increases unceasingly. With the diversity of investors, the registration of urban underground space is highly necessary. After the analysis of the status quo of underground space registration, particularly in Hangzhou, the author concludes that the registration of urban underground space is facing the following four problems: the imperfect legal system, the unclear ownership of urban underground space, the separate registration principle of house and land, and the lack of technical specifications and standards. The author suggests that national and local legislation systems of underground space should be established and that importance be attached to the ownership of underground space, the coordination between land registration and house registration.

Abstract:Geological suitability evaluation of urban traffic underground space utilisation is an important basic work in urban planning, especially for soft soil areas. In this study, firstly, on the basis of analyzing the influencing factors of urban underground transportation space utilisation in soft soil areas, and considering factors such as topography, geotechnical properties, hydrogeology, and existing constructions, an evaluation index system was constructed. The index weights are comprehensively determined according to expert scores and literature research. Then, the evaluation index is quantified by AHP (analytic hierarchy process) method and the suitability of the study area was calculated by multi-objective linear weighting method according to the established evaluation model. Finally, taking Wenyi Road in Hangzhou as an example, using the established evaluation index system and evaluation model to carry out the application research of geological suitability evaluation of underground space utilisation. The research results can provide technical reference for the utilisation of urban traffic underground space in soft soil areas.

Abstract:Underground space is extremely important for the compact and spatial intensive development of cities in the world. The gap of underground space between developing countries and developed countries comes from the immaturity of the market and institutional environment, which leads to an urgent demand for new urban governance theories to guide practice. Governments often pay attention to safety, while the market is business-oriented and focuses on commercial value which leads to a trade-off between them. This paper explores the safety and commerciality from the viewpoint of urban governance theory, and uses case studies of three underground space projects in Hangzhou, China, finds that the logic behind safety and commerciality choices is actually the logical relationship between the government and the market. It is concluded that a logical conversion from complete government-led to market-oriented and government-assisted is needed to resolve the imbalance between safety and commerciality. This paper criticizes the shortcomings of traditional planning theories on urban governance and subject research, incorporates the system and time dimensions into the framework of urban governance theory, and proposes a multiple governance mechanism which can integrate safety and commerciality as a means of maximizing socio-economic benefits.

Abstract:<p>The rapid increase in world population in the 21st century, with associated transport and environmental problems, has encouraged the development of urban underground spaces as an optimal solution in many occasions, including urban renewal schemes. This paper reviews literature on the utilisation of urban underground space for urban renewal to provide a better understanding of how urban underground space can contribute to urban renewal, and of challenges and successes in achieving the goals. The paper concludes that urban underground space present new development opportunities (e.g. land/space supply, less traffic congestion, compact city development, and urban sustainable development) in regeneration of existing urban land. Urban underground spaces, as valuable resources and efficient and effective tools for urban renewal, should be considered by decision-makers for transforming existing urban areas, stimulating vibrant and denser development and mixed land use.</p>

Abstract:The status, problems and trends of China’s underground space development are presented in this paper. In association with the features of use of China’s underground space, such as the large scale, rapid development, high speed subway, various forms are summarized. Five problems in the use of underground space in China are put forward, including the uncoordinated solutions, unintegrated management system, incomplete regulations, incomplete planning, and unclear policy. Four use trends of underground space are also presented, together with (1) the integrated planning, construction and management relating to the development of underground space in central business district (CBD) of Beijing, after World Expo in Shanghai and the business district in south Ningbo; (2) introducing the urban underground complex with an integrated transport hub as its center relating to the cases of Hongqiao Transport Hub and Beijing South Railway Station; (3) the development of underground subway, road and logistic system; (4) the scientific utilization of underground water storage space and aeration of “sponge city”. In this study, some institutional perspective on the use of underground space is also given.

Abstract:In the light of the problems that exist in Qingdao city's present development,such as the lack of urban construction land and traffic congestion etc.,the authors think that the underground space exploitation is one of the important ways to solve these problems.In this paper,the status quo of underground space exploitation is firstly analyzed,and then their problems were put up.Based on the comprehensive analysis of Qingdao city's natural conditions,geology conditions,hydrological conditions and status quo of urban construction etc.,an underground space resource evaluation system of Qingdao city is built up,and then the underground space of Qingdao city is evaluated.Based on the evaluation results,and at the same time,with the consideration of Qingdao master planning and social and economic development planning etc.,the layout of underground space exploitation is researched,which includes underground traffic system,underground public spaces,underground municipal utilities etc..In order to construct a resource-effective and sustainable city in Qingdao,the control and management measures and systems in the process of exploitation of underground space are also set up in the end.

Abstract:Underground public space is an important public space in a city. Over the last decade, the high density areas lead to serious urban problems, and the urban landscape requirements bring needs of underground spaces, thus, the underground public spaces in Beijing have great development. The distribution of Beijing underground public spaces tends to be a spatial layout of double-axis and double-loop, and the functions are diverse such as Integrated, cultural, sports and leisure. This paper discusses the spatial distribution of Beijing underground public spaces, studies the spaces with different functions, and also looks forward to the possibility of underground Beijing City in the future.

Abstract:Nowadays, there is a strong demand for underground space development in China. Meanwhile, underground space utilization has shown the characteristics of high construction difficulty, long construction period, high cost, and complex social impacts. A systematic and reliable management system for underground space development has not yet been established. Therefore, it is urgent to carry out strategic study on the comprehensive management of underground space development from both theoretical and practical aspects. By analyzing the current situation of underground space development in China, the problems in the comprehensive management of underground space are discussed from the aspects of laws and regulations, high-level design, management system, geological survey, equipment, information resource, intelligent level, and comprehensive benefit. Furthermore, the development strategy and countermeasures for underground space development in China are proposed. Considering long-term strategic objectives and development principles, the future main tasks include the establishment of a comprehensive management system, improvement in management capacity, intelligentization of space management, and reinforcement of emergency response safety management. Specifically, a national unified coordination system needs to be established for underground space comprehensive management; relevant laws and regulations, standards, and regulatory evaluation systems should be improved; technologies and professionals should be encouraged for key equipment development; and urban underground space survey and information management should be promoted.

Abstract:China has been the biggest developing country in the world in developing urban underground space use at present, but the legal and administration of urban underground space use lags behind the urban develop process. This situation has affected and may continue hinder the reasonable development of urban underground space in China. How to establish, improve and perfect the administration system of urban underground space use is the key to reasonable and sustainable underground space utilization in China. This paper introduces part of the results of a research on the administrative system construction of urban underground space use in China, especially focusing on the legislation issues. The main contents of the paper are as follows: (i) Status quo of legislations of urban underground space use in China. Three of the state basic laws and two of the department regulations concerned about urban underground space use. But the relevant legal contents are separated, dispersed, isolated and lack of integrated associations with each other. Local legislation is leading the state legislation at aspect of urban underground space use. (ii) Local regulations are categorized in two typical groups, comprehensive one and specific one, according to the regulative objectives. The contents and features of the local laws and regulations are in five respective issues, i.e., land use, planning, construction, property ownership and safety. (iii) Based on the status and problem analysis of legislation, urgent need and framework suggestion of the legislation system construction about urban underground space development in China were put forward.

Abstract:City sustainable development depends on the utilization of underground space resource. But there is no rather intact and exact method that can be used to calculate the underground space resource content, and can't to direct how to exploit rationally and effectively. It will damage the environment inevitably. When the damage reaches certain content and the damaged environment reach a certain extent, it will turn over to influence the utilization of underground space resource. In order to realize the harmony between utilization and environment, according to the damaged development, the environment is divided into stress environment, rock and soil environment and surface environment. To aim at different objects, the reason that caused damage by utilization is analyzed. That how to most utilizes the underground space resource harmony with environment is studied, and the settlement is advanced. It will contribute to utilize and layout the underground space resource, reduce the damage to the environment and find out the fittest between them, to ensure the most profit and the harmonized development among economy, underground space resource and environment. At the end of the paper, some advices are suggested. All of above are contribute to sustainable utilize the underground space resource.

Abstract:Estimation of the comprehensive value of underground pace utilization is a quantitative method for planning scheme decision making of underground space development and appraising the land price of subsurface space estate. This paper defined some basic concepts and ana zed the innovation mechanism of urban underground space value by the methods and ideas of land economical appraisal. 4 case study of underground Space development planning of an urban square in Lanzhou City, China, was put forward to demonstrate the idea of underground space value analysis. Residual value analysis in a payback period method quantified and compared the economic benefit and subsurface land value of the bid - winning planning of the underground space project, verified the economical feasibility of this planning and calculated the recommended standard land price of the subsurface space. Results show that rational exploitation of underground space in urban green fields & squares can not only provide service facility for people, produce great direct economic value above the original mode of land we, but also innovate new residual value as the land price which does not exit before development, and additional social benefits such as improving local traffic environment and landscape, connecting all around land - use unit through underground pedestrian way. The subsurface value must be carried out based on reasonable and valuable planning and management.

Study on the Shift and Expansion of Research Paradigm on Urban Underground Space in China

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to review research and practice progress on urban underground space(UUS), and to summarize the research paradigm framework and its evolution path of UUS. The methods of literature review, comparative study, induction and deduction are used in this paper. The results indicate: 1)the research paradigm of UUS has shifted from the building appendage paradigm to resource utilization paradigm, and will expand to spatial-temporal development paradigm; 2)the research paradigm evolution of UUS contains not only shift between different disciplines, but also gradual expansion under the same discipline; 3)The new paradigm does not completely overturn the original paradigm, but reflects the inclusion, inheritance and crossover of the original one. The study shows that the research paradigm of UUS conforms to evolution of land science disciplines, guided and constrained by land science disciplines paradigm. It is reasonable to apply the theory of land science into studying the research paradigm of UUS.

Abstract:The development of urban underground space (UUS) is of great significance for sustainable urban development because it has potential to solve many urban problems. However, the development of UUS is limited because there are still a lot of constraints and challenges. To better understand the constraining factors of developing UUS and improve the development and utilization of UUS, this study conducts a comprehensive survey of existing literature retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Five main constraining factors, including the limited geological conditions, high cost, lack of natural light and ventilation, high incidence, and difficulty in collecting data and information on UUS, have been discussed to better understand how they affect the development of UUS. Based on the survey, the critical success factors of developing UUS, such as the effective governance structure, planning system for integrating UUS into urban development, coordination of the design of ground and underground, delineation of land property rights of UUS, and application of information techniques in the use of UUS, have been identified and discussed. In addition, knowledge gaps in the studies on development of UUS have been identified. Finally, the research trends and future directions have been proposed for better understanding and practice of UUS development.

Abstract:With the increasing developmental scale of urban underground space, the main contradiction of the urban underground space development has gradually turned from the stability of the foundation pit to the deformation control of the environment around the foundation pit. The underground space development surrounding a complex environment may easily lead to uneven surface subsidence and building cracking, resulting in great economic losses. Therefore, the environmental effect of various excavation foundation pits and environmental effect control technology must be systematically studied. This study introduces and reviews the application of sta-tistical, numerical simulation, and model test methods in the study of the environmental effects caused by excavation foundation pits. This study also summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of each research method, introduces the existing environmental control technology and application cases, summarizes the research results on the environment effect of the underground space development, and proposes some suggestions for future research in this field.

Abstract:Abstract As the urbanization in China advances, urban underground spaces are vigorously developed through large-scale projects. However, the development of underground spaces often proceeds without prior scientific planning and design. City planners who fail to consider geo-environmental factors tend to design nonholistic blueprints that may cause serious problems. The development of an underground space is irreversible because underground resources are currently deemed highly valuable. Therefore, scientific planning must be conducted before the construction and launch of underground space projects. This study adopts a new concept of underground space planning and design and analyzes unfavorable geo-environmental factors, such as sand liquefaction and soft soil, which affect the development of underground spaces. The development mode of the underground space suitable for the geological environment in the study area is proposed. Based on the new concept of planning and design, this work considers a case study in Guangdong Province as a reference for the development mode, depth, and function of underground space in the study area. The findings of this study provide some new planning and design ideas for the development and utilization of underground spaces.

Abstract:Traffic congestion and ground space scarcity are increasing the need to find more space in the urban underground. The demand-driven “top-down” planning of Urban Underground Space (UUS) is common worldwide. As natural resource, the endowments of UUS are different in different regions. Consideration of UUS resource endowments, which can be called “bottom-up” thinking, should be integrated into planning. The evaluation method of UUS resource and investigation results in typical cases are being presented in the paper. It is important for urban development to utilize the underground space. Meanwhile, we should also be aware that there are multiple valuable resources in urban underground. Besides space, there are also water, energy and geo-materials. The paper will discuss how to consider these different resources in urban development. There might be conflicts between the developments of different urban underground resources. The paper investigated the interactions between these developments, revealed some serious impacts and typical conflict modes. The identification of conflicts is a basis for the coordination and synergy of these developments. For sustainable development of city, it is needed to understand and scientifically evaluate the multiple urban underground resources, then holistically plan and manage the developments. Structure and properties of urban underground geological body determine the engineering conditions of UUS and resource attributes of urban underground. Since 2003, China has been conducting pilot projects of Urban Geological Investigation (UGI) programs in some large cities. The paper will also show how to consider the influence of geological conditions in urban underground resource evaluation and UUS planning.

Abstract:Urban underground space (UUS) involves multiple stakeholders whose concerns span the entire life cycle of underground space. The government pays more attention to the social benefits of UUS to the region, developers pay more attention to the economic benefits brought by the development of UUS, and users pay more attention to the comfort level of UUS operation. This study used the analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), government, developers, and users to construct a comprehensive evaluation index system of underground space development needs. Different from previous studies, considering the need for future connectivity development in the UUS circle, this paper proposes to comprehensively consider the impact of connectivity development on regional suitability through coupled AHP and cellular automata (CA). The results show that about 102.67 km2 (13.03%) underground area of Erhai Lake Basin is suitable for underground space development. Compared with the traditional evaluation method, the evaluation result of about 31.41 km2 (3.99%) area was improved, and the fragmentation problem between blocks was improved. This method is of great value to the comprehensive development of UUS in the Erhai Lake Basin and is helping to improve future underground space planning.
