Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology
Abstract:Rockburst is a phenomenon characterized by spalling or ejection of rock. Severe rockbursts can lead to casualties and equipment damage. The literature review shows that previous research has focused on rockburst in tunnels with burial depths greater than 200 m. However, the formation mechanism of rockburst in tunnels with shallow burial depths (<200 m) within gully environments remains unclear. Researching rockbursts in shallow buried tunnels within gullies is crucial to ensuring construction safety. In this paper, the Mufeiling Tunnel, in Zhejiang Province, China, serves as a case study to analyze the rockburst characteristics and the formation mechanism of tuff tunnels in shallow buried sections within gullies. This is made through in-situ monitoring data and in-situ stress tests. A Y-index for rockburst classification of tuff tunnels in shallow buried gully sections was developed through triaxial loading and unloading and acoustic emission tests. The results indicated that the instant type of surface small-volume rockburst mainly appeared at the arched roof of the tunnel face in gully shallow buried section of tuff tunnels. The presence of surrounding rock with hard brittleness and epigenetic reformation results in high in-situ stress levels in the striatum, which constitutes the internal cause of rockbursts. The redistribution of stress in the surrounding rock, caused by tunnel excavation and unloading, represents the external cause of rockbursts. Increased tunnel excavation rate accelerates the energy release rate in the surrounding rock, consequently enlarging the scale of rockbursts. Furthermore, this paper introduces a method for determining the maximum horizontal principal stress. This is via using the Kaiser effect and by establishing a Y-index for rockburst classification that enables rapid and accurate prediction of rockburst intensity in tuff tunnels in shallow buried sections of gully, solely through indoor mechanical tests. The reliability of this criterion was confirmed through its application in the Mufeiling Tunnel.
