Abstract:Homogeneity is one of the most important factors affecting the performance-related properties of asphalt mixtures. Pavement condition surveys have shown various patterns of distress due to segregation and other types of non-uniformity. Using digital image processing, a statistical method was developed to evaluate asphalt mixture homogeneity quantitatively. Aggregate particle distribution in asphalt mixtures was described and analyzed by aggregate particle frequency statistic and distance statistic. The index of homogeneity was presented through aggregate particle distribution. The relevance of homogeneity to some mixture performance properties was also investigated. Results show that asphalt mixture homogeneity can be assessed quantitatively by the values of aggregate particle frequency statistic and distance statistic. Moreover, homogeneity dominates variations in mixture performance properties.

The main objective of this research is to investigate the index of asphalt mixture homogeneity using digital image processing, which includes three aspects: (1) to develop the index of homogeneity, (2) to categorize the index of homogeneity, and (3) to examine the main influence factors of the index of homogeneity. By the aggregate distributed situation, the aggregate distributed number the area ratio coefficient, and a gradation-related coefficient, a method for evaluating homogeneity of a cross section in asphalt mixtures was described in detail, and a method for evaluating the whole homogeneity was also presented. The research results indicate that based on digital image processing it is feasible to quantitatively evaluate asphalt mixture homogeneity through the index of homogeneity; the index of homogeneity can be classified by Empirical-Analytical method; aggregate gradation, asphalt content, compaction effort, and experimental temperature all influence the index of homogeneity.

Abstract:In this paper, the performance of environmentally friendly porous asphalt mixture was optimized by the response surface method. Taking the asphalt-aggregate ratio, crumb-rubber content, and basalt fiber content as the independent variables, the air void, Marshall stability, flow value, Marshall quotient, and Cantabro particle loss are the response values. The best model was determined by fitting the experimental data. After the influence of the independent variables on the response values was clarified, the models were used to optimize the dosage of the asphalt, crumb rubber, and basalt fiber through comprehensive analysis. The results showed that the application of the response surface method can complete the establishment of the models and the optimization of the performance of the porous asphalt mixture with sufficient accuracy. The optimum dosage of the asphalt to aggregate ratio, crumb rubber, and basalt fiber is 4.51%, 11.21%, and 0.42%, respectively. The high-temperature stability, low-temperature crack resistance, water stability, and Cantabro particle loss resistance of the optimized porous asphalt mixture were effectively improved, which provides a reference for the construction of eco-friendly pavement.

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to investigate a method for quantitatively evaluating asphalt mixture homogeneity.Based on fractal theory,aggregate distribution,i.e.asphalt mixture homogeneity was directly studied.The research results show that the calculated results based on fractal theory are the same as the subjectively assessed results,which indicate that based on fractal theory,asphalt mixture homogeneity can be quantitatively appraised by aggregate mass-grading fractal dimension;with the increase of the nominal maximum aggregate size,asphalt mixture homogeneity becomes worse;aggregate gradation becomes coarser with the increase of aggregate mass-grading fractal dimension.

Abstract:Based on the index of homogeneity of asphalt mixture and the data from field survey,partial segregation causes for asphalt pavements during construction,such as aggregate stockpile,asphalt paver selection and conveyance of asphalt mixture were quantitatively investigated.The research results show that improper aggregate stockpile,inappropriate asphalt paver selection and conveyance of asphalt mixture all influence homogeneity of asphalt pavements and can give rise to segregation.Finally corresponding preventive countermeasures against segregation were put forward,i.e.aggregate should be on flat and rigid ground to avoid intermixing of different batches and water intrusion;half width paver should be selected;and the mixture delivery distance should be reduced as much as possible.

Abstract:As a pavement maintenance technology, hot in-place recycling (HIR) can realize full utilization of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), significantly saving non-renewable resources and project costs. However, due to variability of material properties, recycled mixtures gradation, and temperature control in construction, HIR-maintained pavement usually suffers from segregation, affecting performance and service life. To control construction quality and prolong service life, a segregation evaluation system of HIR-maintained pavement is proposed. This evaluation system, including calculation of segregation indexes, determination of segregation zones, and discrimination of segregation types, is established based on digital image processing (DIP) and surface texture distribution characteristics. In addition, it is verified by a case study of qualified HIR projects in Jiangsu Province in China. According to the empirical acceptance requirements of maintenance projects, discriminative zones for segregation types are established at 95% confidence level. Fluctuation curves of segregation indexes and image tests of four segregation types identified by segregation zones show that segregation indexes are well correlated with texture distribution characteristics and segregation degree, confirming the effectiveness and accuracy of the segregation evaluation system. Therefore, the segregation evaluation system of HIR-maintained projects proposed in this paper can realize real-time monitoring, rapid diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment decision-making of recycled pavement segregation degree.

The research results indicate that based on digital image processing it is feasible to quantitatively evaluate asphalt mixture homogeneity through the index of homogeneity which is determined by the aggregate distributed situation, the aggregate distributed number, the area ratio coefficient, and a gradation-related coefficient; the index of homogeneity can be classified by Empirical-Analytical method; aggregate gradation, asphalt content, compaction effort, and experimental temperature all influence the index of homogeneity.

Abstract:in this paper, the temperature data of discrete points collected by the paving temperature real-time collection equipment, are expanded into surface data through interpolation, smoothing and other algorithms. Based on the temperature difference as the criterion for temperature segregation, the temperature distribution area is introduced as a control parameter, so as to establish the temperature segregation index (TSI) and low temperature area index (LTAI) to quantify and analyze the unevenness area of the paving surface. In addition, by defining the rolling uniformity index and rolling compliance index, the rolling uniformity of asphalt pavement are quantitatively evaluated, providing auxiliary support for highway construction management.

Abstract:In order to investigate the effect of the coarse and fine aggregate on asphalt mixture homogeneity,based on the index of asphalt mixture homogeneity and as an example of AC-16,the effects of the aggregates retained on the 4.75 mm sieve and on the 2.36 mm sieve are respectively studied on asphalt mixture homogeneity.Results show that whether from the view of the index of asphalt mixture homoge-neity or variation of mechanical performance of asphalt mixtures,aggregate gradation influences asphalt mixture homogeneity,and it is more obvious that the aggregates retained on the 4.75 mm sieve influence asphalt mixture homogeneity than retained on the 2.36 mm sieve.

Abstract:The gradation and mechanical properties of aggregates impressively affect the load carrying capacity and rutting resistance of asphalt mixtures. They are able to provide some fundamental parameters that are linked to mixture performance. In order to accurately detect critical controlled sizes and obtain more fundamental parameters that can characterize load carrying capacity and rutting resistance of asphalt mixtures, this paper aims to develop a mechanics-based approach to evaluate aggregate gradation, which contains the theoretical packing analysis and discrete element simulation. An extended theoretical morphology framework is developed by checking the local and global interlock of graded aggregates in the theoretical packing analysis. The sieve size range of primary structure which has an interactive interlock can be determined in the local interlock check model. The relationship between the transferred force and the induced force is proposed in the densest and loosest packing arrangements, respectively. The morphological parameters of disruption factor and weighted average size for the global scale are also proposed in theoretical packing analysis. Then the discrete element method is used to validate the theoretical framework. The advanced gradation input algorithm procedure is established in the discrete element simulation to simulate the compression test of graded aggregates. The mechanical parameters of contact force, contact points and stress-strain curves are extracted from the simulation results. The results show that the discrete element method can validate the theoretical framework and output the performance related parameters. The contact force analysis shows that the aggregates retaining on sieve sizes of 2.36 and 4.75 mm provide more than 50% contribution to resist load, and the aggregates retaining on sieve sizes of 1.18, 0.6 and 0.3 mm provide more than 50% contribution to stabilize the structure. The coordination number analysis suggests that the gradation with more fine aggregates might lead to a greater number of voids but smaller air-void size when the asphalt content and porosity remain constant. The stress-strain curve analysis shows that the modulus and secondary strain are highly related to the rutting performance of an asphalt mixture. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:To study the methods of the low-noise asphalt pavement mixture mix design,the paper design used gradation and optimum asphalt content as the two main design specifications of low-noise asphalt pavement mixture design.The search used the table as aggregate grading design and determined the best asphalt content by comparative analysis of theoretical calculations,flow test and asphalt fell tests.The results showed that:Mixture of air voids resulted in using the table had a good linear correlation with target air void.The way of determining the best asphalt content using flow test is more consistent with actual project and easy to spread.

Abstract:Aggregate gradation segregation in asphalt mixtures can result in early damage and reduced durability in asphalt pavement. However, presently, most methods of segregation detection can be performed only after the design of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) or asphalt paving is completed. To identify the segregation characteristics of different aggregate gradations in the mix design of HMA, a simple laboratory method was developed that includes the definition of evaluation indicator of segregation degree for coarse aggregate gradation and the corresponding testing apparatus. In addition, the model for evaluating coarse aggregate segregation was established using a multivariate nonlinear regression method. Based on the model for evaluating coarse aggregate segregation, a prediction method for HMA segregation was proposed. The results of an application case showed that the models for evaluating coarse aggregate segregation and prediction method for HMA segregation are feasible and reasonable. The method to characterize coarse aggregate segregation presented in this paper may help in optimizing the design of aggregate gradation in HMA.

A Novel Evaluation Method of Construction Homogeneity for Asphalt Pavement Based on the Characteristic of Component Distribution

Abstract:To effectively evaluate the construction homogeneity of asphalt pavement, the tomography image of a core sample of asphalt pavement was obtained via industrial computed tomography (CT) equipment. According to the characteristics of CT images, an improved separation algorithm based on annular partition and Nobuyuki Otsu (OTSU) threshold segmentation was proposed. Based on the distribution of aggregates, voids and asphalt mortar, and the area ratio of each part in the CT images inside the pavement, a novel evaluation method for the distribution homogeneity of asphalt pavement components was put forward, and the validity of the evaluation index was also verified. The results show that the aggregates, voids and asphalt mortar in CT images can be effectively segmented by annular partition combined with the OTSU threshold separation algorithm. By superimposing the segmented image on the original image, the segmentation and identification effects of aggregates, voids and asphalt mortar in the CT image are confirmed. Compared with a non-segregated specimen, the average values of the horizontal heterogeneity coefficients of high, medium, light and fine-aggregate-segregated mixtures increased by 72.0%, 48.3%, 34.7% and 16.1%, respectively, where the change range is in accordance with the segregation degrees of several mixtures. The indirect tensile strength of fine-aggregate-, light-, medium- and high-segregated asphalt mixtures decreased by 8.3%, 16.7%, 25.0% and 45.8%, respectively, when compared with the non-segregated asphalt mixture. The index of the vertical heterogeneity coefficient has good correlation with the indirect tensile strength of segregated asphalt mixtures. The construction quality homogeneity of asphalt pavement in different regions can be reliably evaluated by the horizontal heterogeneity coefficient and vertical heterogeneity coefficient.

Abstract:Epoxy asphalt mixtures, recognized for their superior performance as pavement materials, have been widely utilized across a diverse range of applications. As the service life of the initial epoxy asphalt pavements comes to an end, a substantial volume of non-melting, non-soluble, and non-degradable material is generated, imposing significant pressure on the environment. This study investigates the physical and mechanical properties of reclaimed epoxy asphalt pavement (REAP) and evaluates its potential for recyclability. The stability of REAP was assessed through multiple condition mechanical tests, while image-abrasion tests were employed to examine the morphological evolution of REAP. Additionally, mixture tests were performed to determine the effect of REAP on the performance of recycled asphalt mixture. The results demonstrate that REAP retains considerable structural stability, with crushing resistance positioned between that of basalt and limestone, though its abrasion resistance is somewhat inferior to these natural aggregates. REAP exhibits a relatively flatter profile compared to limestone, with only minimal differences in roughness between the two. The uniformity of REAP performance decreases with particle size, with particles in the 2.36-4.75 mm range exhibiting significant performance fluctuations. These fluctuations adversely affect the crack resistance and moisture resistance of the mixtures. While increasing the filler content can partially mitigate the negative impact of REAP on crack resistance, it also leads to a continued decline in moisture resistance.

Abstract:To determine the optimal asphalt content in porous asphalt mixtures, the drain-down experiments together with theContabro and Marshall test have been done in the lab. As a result, it is possible to determine the optimal asphalt content by synthesizing the results of these three tests. Also, in order to study the influence of aggregate gradation on the performance of the pavement, four different gradations with different components of aggregate are designed. Then, their road performance was studied; and this included anti-rutting, water stability permeability and skid resistance with optimal asphalt content. Consequently, it was found that the influence of aggregate gradation on performance is obvious. Therefore, an appropriate gradation with a good air void content is important to ensure satisfactory performance of porous asphalt mixtures. Meanwhile, the test results show that the mixture with air void gradation ratio ranging from 18% to 24% has betteranti-rutting, water stability, permeability and skid resisting performance.
Research on the Skidding Resistance and Attenuation Characteristics of Asphalt Pavement Based on Image Recognition-Analysis Strategy

Abstract:To accurately evaluate the skidding resistance of asphalt pavements, a texture imaging device was developed to realize the standardized acquisition of pavement images. Based on the gray-level co-occurrence matrix and multifractal theory of texture structure, the influence of segregation degree and gradation type on the texture properties of asphalt pavement was studied. Meanwhile, a comprehensive evaluation index of skidding resistance was proposed for asphalt pavement. Furthermore, the attenuation characteristics of the anti-skidding performance for asphalt mixture were explored, and the corresponding attenuation model of asphalt pavement was established. The results show that the segregation degree and gradation type significantly affected the texture parameters and anti-skidding performance of asphalt mixture. Specially, with an increase in the segregation degree of coarse aggregate, the parameters of energy, entropy, and multifractal spectrum width gradually increased, whereas the inertial moment gradually decreased. The variation range of the multifractal spectrum difference initially increased and subsequently decreased. For the texture parameters such as energy, entropy, inertial moment, and multifractal spectrum width Δα, the values of the asphalt mixture with larger nominal maximum particle were higher than those of the mixture with smaller nominal maximum particle, whereas the multifractal spectrum difference value showed the opposite law. In addition, the texture parameters of energy, entropy, and multifractal spectrum width exhibited good linear correlation with the texture depth (TD) of asphalt mixtures with various segregation levels and gradation types. The index based on the texture parameters of energy, entropy, and multifractal spectrum width effectively evaluated the skidding resistance of asphalt pavements, which showed the same trend as the TD with the increase of the abrasion number. The achievement provides an effective solution for the evaluation of skidding resistance and attenuation characteristics of asphalt mixtures.

Abstract:In view of environmental concerns and rising price in pavement materials, the use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in asphalt mixtures has gained in popularity recently. However, the aggregate dispersion uniformity of reclaimed asphalt mixtures is difficult to be evaluated due to its complex material composition. In this study, a new method of square region division was adopted based on the digital image processing (DIP) technique for evaluating the aggregate dispersion uniformity. The shear gyratory compactor (SGC) specimens of reclaimed asphalt mixtures were prepared and then cut into six horizontal cross sections. A digital camera was used to photograph each cross section. After obtaining the cross-sectional images, the microstructure of the asphalt mixtures was extracted by DIP technology, including background trimming, image enhancement, threshold segmentation, and image morphology. The inscribed square within the image was selected and equally divided into sixteen unit grids. Based on the normal distribution function of area ratio of aggregates to each unit grid ( Pi value), the probability of Pi value happening in specific range was proposed as a dispersion uniformity index (DUI). The effects of RAP content, RAP agglomeration, and asphalt type on the aggregate dispersion uniformity were taken into account in the laboratory experiment. The results show that the square region division method is validated to be effective and the proposed index can well reflect the variation of aggregate dispersion uniformity under different test conditions. The RAP agglomeration shows an adverse effect on the aggregate dispersion uniformity. This effect becomes greater as the increase of RAP content. Nevertheless, a significant improvement in the dispersion uniformity of aggregate can be acquired with the replacement of virgin asphalt by foamed asphalt.

Abstract:Road construction consumes great amounts of high-grade natural resources. Using low-grade natural rocks or some solid wastes as substitute materials is a hot topic. Considering this, the feasibility of using low-grade granite aggregate, solid waste-based filler (desulphurization gypsum residues, DGR) and binder (waste tire rubber modified asphalt, RMA) simultaneously in asphalt mixtures has been fully investigated in this research. The commonly used base asphalt and limestone powder (LP) filler were control groups. Material characteristics of raw materials mainly including micro-morphology, functional group, mineral phase, chemical composition and thermal stability were first evaluated in order to recognize them. Four asphalt mixtures (two asphalt binder and two filler) were then designed by standard Superpave method. Finally, a detailed investigation into the pavement performance of asphalt mixtures was carried out. The moisture damage resistance and low-temperature crack resistance were detected by the changing rules of stability, strength and fracture energy, and the high-temperature stability and fatigue performance were determined by wheel tracking test and indirect tensile (IDT) fatigue test, respectively. Results suggested that RMA and DGR both showed positive effects on the low-temperature crack resistance and fatigue property of the granite asphalt mixture. DGR also strengthened moisture stability. The contribution of RMA on high-temperature deformation resistance of the granite asphalt mixture was compelling. It can offset the insufficiency in high-temperature stability made by DGR. A conclusion can be made that asphalt mixture prepared with granite, DGR and RMA possesses satisfactory pavement performances.
