Abstract:There are a significant number of hip fractures each year around the world, associated with high mortality, morbidity and refracture rate, many attributable to osteoporosis. Bisphosphonates (BPs) have been widely used for treatment of osteoporosis as the first-line medicine, which can increase bone mineral density and decrease osteoporotic fracture risk through inhibiting the activity of osteoclast. However, some recent studies show BPs have a negative effect on normal bone metabolism inducing delayed union and refracture during long term treatment since the inhibition the activity of osteoblast. Several treatment perspectives of osteoporotic hip fracture using BPs were discussed in this review.
