Abstract:IntroductionAutonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are capable of independently performing underwater navigation tasks, with side-scan sonar being a primary tool for underwater detection. The integration of these two technologies enables autonomous monitoring of the marine environment.MethodsTo address the limitations of existing seabed detection methods, such as insufficient robustness and high complexity, this study proposes a comprehensive seabed detection method based on a sliding window technique. Additionally, this study introduces a sonar image stitching method that accounts for variations in image intensity and addresses challenges arising from multi-frame overlaps and gaps. Furthermore, an autonomous target perception framework based on shadow region segmentation is proposed, which not only identifies targets in side-scan sonar images but also provides target height measurements.ResultsComprehensive seabed detection method improves accuracy by 31.2% compared to the peak detection method. In experiments, the height measurement error for this method was found to be 9%.DiscussionTo validate the effectiveness of the proposed seabed detection method, sonar image stitching method, and target perception framework, comprehensive experiments were conducted in the Qingjiang area of Hubei Province. The results obtained from the lake environment demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed methods.
Shallow Water High Resolution Bathymetric Side Scan Sonar

Abstract:With about 2 years' work, the Instituted of Acoustic, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IACAS) and the Teledyne RD Technology (Shanghai) Inc. (RDT) have developed the Shallow water High Resolution Bathymetric Side Scan Sonar (SBSSS). It is mainly composed of sonar deck control unit, sonar housing (include electronic unit and watertight pod) and two sonar arrays. The SBSSS can obtain the incidence angle of the backscatter from the water bottom on sonar array, directly. Using this system, the grazing angle, distance and signal intensity (acoustic intensity) of the target on the water bottom or in the water can be measured. Working with motion sensor, CTD sensor and GPS (or RTK) system, the SBSSS can get the high resolution terrain and geomorphy of the water bottom, synchronously. After post-processing, the contour map and side scanning map, which is better than the normal side scanning map, can be obtained. The SBSSS also can be used to detect the target on the water bottom or in the water.The technique of sea bottom automatic detect and estimation direction of arrival (DOA) based on multi-subarray subspace fitting (SBAD-EDMSF) is researched and progressed. It can improve the accuracy of depth measurement. Some other theory about the SBSSS, such as estimation technique about the number of signal sources, signal copy technique, attitude correct technique, real time signal processing technique and etc., is studied. Using these methods, the sonar can get better result in the complex acoustic field in the shallow water. So the theory info about the SBSSS is found. It is used to design the sonar and processing the sonar data. The good results are obtained.The maximum working depth of this system is 300 meters. The maximum working range for the depth is 12 times water depth, and for the side scan is 400 meters per side. The cross track resolution is 5 cm, and the minimum detect height is 10 cm.The lake test at Qiandao Lake, P. R. China and the ultra shallow water sea test (5 to 10 meters) in Qingdao, P. R. China are implemented. A water area of 2000mx800m is surveyed. The contour map and the side scan map are obtained. Using the SBSSS, a 30 cm diameter buoyant plastic sphere is detected. After the post processing for the survey data, the measurement accuracy of depth is basically corresponded with the special order standard of IHO.The SBSSS also can be mounted on the automatic underwater vehicle (AUV), remote operated vehicle (ROV), towed body and other underwater vehicles. It can be used to measure the small target, the terrain and the geomorphy of the sea bottom.This paper makes a brief introduce of the system structure, the theory info, the lake test results and the sea test results of the SBSSS.

Abstract:With the increasing attention on oceanography, more effective exploration technology has been of great interests in the community of ocean engineering. Side-scan sonar is a popular imaging equipment for seabed topography; however, it is commonly used under 4 knots, which does not meet the actual demand of the modern oceanographic research. This paper proposes a high-speed side-scan sonar imaging scheme based on multi-beam forming technology. In this scheme, the digital signal processing system can adjust the maximum response direction of the receiving array by introducing appropriate phase shift or time delay to the output, so as to increase the scanning range and then improve operation efficiency. In order to verify the feasibility of this imaging algorithm, an ocean environment model is constructed, which simulates the acoustic propagation theory, the principle of seabed acoustic backscattering and the acoustic signal modulation method. After analyzing the acoustic characteristics of uniform linear array, an underwater acoustic transducer with multiple receiving subarrays is designed. In the process of simulated navigation, the receiving subarrays will generate the electrical signal containing seabed acoustic information. Based on the simulation signal, the parameters of the digital filter in the actual system can be determined in advance, which provides convenience for later processing. The time delay matrix of each receiving channel based on dynamic focusing beamforming method can be verified by imaging the seabed model. The processed acoustic data are combined with GPS information and heading angle to generate seabed scanning image in the host computer system. This paper mainly presents the imaging algorithm of multi-beam side-scan sonar digital signal processing system.

Abstract:With the increasing of side-scan sonar applications, the studies on side-scan sonar image processing have been reported more and more increasingly. This paper firstly analyzes these current studies in this field to explain the need for this study, then it brings forward the main contents of side-scan sonar image processing and analyzes these contents one by one. Based on SIS-1624 side-scan sonar system, ArcGIS92 and Oracle92 this paper has built a prototype system and implemented the geometric correction, the gray correction, the geo-coding and the image fusion methods.

Abstract:Side scan sonar (SSS) is a multi–purpose ocean sensing technology, but due to the complex engineering and variable underwater environment, its research process often faces many uncertain obstacles. A sonar simulator can provide reasonable research conditions for guiding development and fault diagnosis, by simulating the underwater acoustic propagation and sonar principle to restore the actual experimental scenarios. However, the current open–source sonar simulators gradually lag behind mainstream sonar technology; therefore, they cannot be of sufficient assistance, especially due to their low computational efficiency and unsuitable high–speed mapping simulation. This paper presents a sonar simulator based on a two–level network architecture, which has a flexible task scheduling system and extensible data interaction organization. The echo signal fitting algorithm proposes a polyline path model to accurately capture the propagation delay of the backscattered signal under high–speed motion deviation. The large–scale virtual seabed is the operational nemesis of the conventional sonar simulators; therefore, a modeling simplification algorithm based on a new energy function is developed to optimize the simulator efficiency. This paper arranges several seabed models to test the above simulation algorithms, and finally compares the actual experiment results to prove the application value of this sonar simulator.

Abstract:With the increase of ocean engineering projects and ocean's accidents and wrecked ships,unpreced-ented challenges and hidden perils caused by increasing submarine obstacles are faced by marine development and navigation.These submarine obstacles have to be searched and dealt with.Co-application of Side-Scan Sonar and kinetic positioning vessels is the best selected to resolve the problem,but the cost is too high.Refitted fishing-boats are a possible substitute,and they are adopted widely now in offshore survey.The application of Side-Scan Sonar in submarine survey and the dynamic positioning principle of working with refitted fishing-boats are introduced in this paper.The method is proved to be feasible in practice.

Abstract:With the need of AUV research, we have made a sonar image processing system which is equipped in Chinese 'Explorer' AUV. Based on TMS320C30 high speed DSP, the system is used to realize sonar image compression and underwater object detection including obstacle recognition in real time. Pool and sea testing have been finished and shown good performance. In this paper, the system algorithm, software and hardware are introduced and the experimental results are given.

Abstract:Underwater sensing is envisioned using inexpensive underwater sensor nodes distributed over a wide area, deployed close to the bottom, and networked through underwater acoustic communications. In this paper, an underwater acoustic sensor node to perform the underwater sensing is designed and implemented. Specifically, we describe the design criteria, architecture and functional modules of underwater acoustic sensor node. Moreover, we give the experiment results of ocean current field estimation using the designed underwater acoustic sensor nodes at the sea area of Liuheng, Zhoushan, China.

Abstract:The development of sonar and radar systems utilizing sound and radio waves, respectively, has evolved significantly over the past two centuries. Recent decades have witnessed remarkable progress in remote sensing using high-frequency Doppler radars for marine surface parameter analysis. Understanding animal behavior around sustainable ocean energy sources is crucial for mitigating potential risks linked to such installations. Increasing the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) enhances signal reception. A technique estimating noise in the detection coil's first half determines the transfer function between the reference and detection coils. This enables separation of the Ultra-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance signal from noise, preserving it using non-linear fitting. Sonar systems, using sound waves, detect underwater objects, map surfaces, and track marine life. Sound waves emitted by the transmitter are reflected back to calculate distances. Challenges in sonar systems include a blind zone caused by submerged transducers in shallow water. To improve, SNR enhancement is critical. Sonar's future may rely on AI-assisted signal processing. Radar systems, operating with radio waves, share features with sonar, focusing on object detection and ranging. Improvement avenues include 3D imaging and AI-enhanced signal processing. In conclusion, sonar and radar systems are crucial tools for underwater exploration and object detection. While challenges persist, innovative solutions and AI advancements promise enhanced capabilities for both systems.

Abstract:This paper describes a method to reconstruct the three-dimensional aspects of underwater objects using side-scan sonar images. The sonar images are segmented into three kinds of regions: echo, shadow and background. A two-dimensional intensity map is estimated from the echoes and a two-dimensional depth map is computed from the shadow information. With the transformation model, the final reconstruction merges these two maps to generate three-dimensional point cloud images of underwater objects.

Abstract:The raw side-scan sonar images are sequenced by scan line,and have not holistic geographical positioning and scalability. The original side-scan sonar image can't be analysed and used until it has been geocoded with geographical references. However,the geocoded images would have gaps after geographical positioning. This paper investigates the factors which cause the gaps in the process of geocoding. A practical navigational processing model based on navigation files is proposed in the paper. The model has been applied in sonar image processing system(GeoSonar) to process side-scan image in Hangzhou Bay,which proves the method effectiveness.

Abstract:Side-scan sonar data presents a significant challenge to analysts due to the size of the material that requires processing. Automatic recognition systems can help in the interpretation and filtration of the data, reducing the time needed for analysis. Deep learning architectures have been employed for computer vision tasks in the underwater domain. The objective of this work is to review current deep learning methods for automatic image classification, object detection, semantic segmentation, and instance segmentation through statistical analysis of published studies. Further, this work includes an inventory of publicly available side-scan sonar data followed by a discussion on augmentation methods applied to side-scan sonar imagery. The study discusses current challenges in the automatic underwater target detection field, highlights main gaps within the domain and identifies potential research directions. Our proposal includes the creation of a standardised benchmark and the use of a common set of metrics allowing for consistent evaluation of future research works.

Underwater Target Detection by Side-Scan Sonar Based on Yolov7-Attention

Abstract:Side-scan sonar plays a crucial role in underwater exploration, and autonomous detection of side-scan sonar images is vital for detecting unknown underwater environments. However, due to the complexity of the underwater environment, few highlighted areas of the target, blurred feature details, and difficulty in collecting data from side-scan sonar, achieving high-precision autonomous target recognition in side-scan sonar images is challenging. This article solves this problem by improving the You Only Look Once v7 (YOLOv7) model to achieve high-precision object detection in side-scan sonar images. Firstly, Since the side-scan sonar image has a large useless area, the paper introduces Swin-Transformer for dynamic attention and global modeling, which improves the model’s weight on the target region. Secondly, the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) is used to further improve feature representation and enhance the accuracy of the neural network model. Experiments on the side-scan sonar image dataset (SSS) show that the improved YOLOv7 model has 85.32% and 53.32% in its average accuracy (mAP0.5) and (mAP0.5:0.95), respectively. These results are 4.65% and 4.98% higher than the YOLOv7 model. The improved YOLOv7 algorithm proposed in this paper has great potential for object detection and recognition of side-scan sonar images.

Abstract:The demand for fish products, which provide crucial protein for humans, is rising as the global population grows. In contrast, fish stock is declining due to human activity, environmental changes and overfishing. Fish monitoring provides valuable support data for effective fishery management and ecosystem conservation. The common monitoring methods are based on manual sampling, which is time-consuming, laborious and intrusive. Imaging sonar is a hydroacoustic system that produces acoustic images similar to optical images by transmitting and receiving sound waves, allowing for in situ monitoring of fish non-intrusively in the dark and turbid water environments where optical cameras are limited. In the last decade, imaging sonar, especially high frequency multibeam forward-looking sonar and side-scan sonar, has been widely used in fish monitoring. We reviewed the literature from the previous decade on the use of these two types of imaging sonar in fish species identification, abundance estimation, length measurement and behaviour analysis, as well as the sonar imagery processing concerning fish. The review results show that these imaging sonars are efficient and effective tools for fish monitoring in complex environments. The challenges include (1) the recognition of small fish forming dense aggregations; (2) species identification, which limits their use in species-specific studies; (3) time-consuming massive data processing. Therefore, advanced algorithms for sonar imagery processing and integrations with other sampling technologies are needed for future development.

Abstract:As the ocean development process speeds up, the technical means of ocean exploration are being upgraded. Due to the characteristics of seawater and the complex underwater environment, conventional measurement and sensing methods used for land are difficult to apply in the underwater environment directly. Especially for the seabed topography, it is impossible to carry out long-distance and accurate detection via electromagnetic waves. Therefore, various types of acoustic and even optical sensing devices for underwater applications have come into use. Equipped by submersibles, those underwater sensors can sense underwater wide-range and accurately. Moreover, the development of sensor technology will be modified and optimized according to the needs of ocean exploitation. This paper has made a summary of the ocean sensing technologies applied in some critical underwater scenarios, including geological surveys, navigation and communication, marine environmental parameters, and underwater inspections. In order to contain as many submersible-based sensors as possible, we have to make a trade-off on breadth and depth. In the end, the authors predict the development trend of underwater sensor technology based on the future ocean exploration requirements.

Abstract:A method for submarine pipe status inspection in strong tide region was proposed based on submarine acoustic exploration technologies aiming at the problem that submarine pipe is more dangerous and cannot be inspected by conventional methods. The method chose side-scan sonar system, sub-bottom profiler, and multi-beam echo-sounder system to detect the spatial relationship between the pipe and the seafloor. The submarine pipe status inspection process was designed after a brief introduction to the working theory of every selected technology. Then the acoustic data acquisition and processing based on spatial reference were explained. Finally two ways to express the inspection results were proposed, namely the two-dimensional expressing way based on diagram and the three-dimensional expressing way based on Arc Engine component from ESRI.

Abstract:Autonomous underwater robots have more outstanding benefits than research ships for benthonic detection. A key problem is how to better use the detection senor on the robot, such as the multi-beam sonar. However, the application method for multi-beam sonar on the underwater robot has not been introduced in detail until now. The techniques for the application of detection equipment are discussed and studied, and the main contents include interface, installation, acoustic synchronization, system error amending, and survey line design. The fine topographic maps were obtained from the multi-beam sonar on the robot. The trials show the validity of the proposed techniques.
