Abstract:Research on damage characteristics and mechanisms of aluminum alloy struck by lightning is one of the basis for lightning protection of oil tanks. Thus, using the simulated lightning current experiment method,we experimentally investigated 3003 aluminum alloy material, which is widely used in oil storage, with different components of lightning currents, and investigated its damage morphology, microstructure, and elemental composition changes by high-resolution scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis.Combined with the electric parameters of different components in lightning, damage characteristics and mechanisms were analyzed. The research results show that,a thin oxide layer is formed on alloy surface under the effect of first return stroke.Crack initiation is caused by oxide layer broken.Affected by continuing current of interval stroke,second-phase particles density in damage zone increases and second-phase particles size decreases. In transition zone, the content of second-phase particles significantly decreases.Dendrite and banded crystal boundary take shape in the interface between damage and transition zones.Cracks are caused by the uneven solidification.Due to long continuing current,"over-bum" phenomenon occurs. The extent of re-melting deepens and crater-like morphology appears.Lots of hydrogen evolution pores are formed by stress concentration. The research results could make a reference to the lightning protection improvement for the metal and alloy materials.
