Effect of Crystallinity of Kaolinite on Urea Intercalation and Layer Expansion

Abstract:Kaolinite with different Hinckley index (HI, 1.30, 1.02 and 0.78) was used as raw material, urea was used as intercalation agent to modify kaolinite, and the energy released by the reaction of KClO 3 and urea was used to decompose the urea between the layers of kaolinite-urea intercalation complex, so as to realize the expansion of kaolinite layers. Crystallinity analysis and urea intercalation evaluation was carried out by XRD, TG-DTA and FTIR. The results showed that the intercalation rate of urea to kaolinite was proportional to the HI of kaolinite. XRD and SEM results showed that kaolinite with high crystallinity could easily accommodate more urea in the interlayer, and it was easier to obtain expanded kaolinite with a higher layer expansion degree under the same provided energy. The ζ- potential test proved that expanded kaolinite with a higher layer expansion degree could expose more surface and carry more negative charges on the surface, thereby increasing the adsorption capacity of methyl blue. By studying the effect of crystallinity and microstructure of kaolinite on its intercalation and expansion, the layer structure of kaolinite can be further regulated to expand its application field.
