Abstract:AMPA receptors mediate the majority of fast excitatory synaptic transmission in the brain. The subtype and number of AMPA receptors are the keys for synaptic transmission, plasticity and preci-sion of neurocircuits. Moreover,it is the cause of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders.Dendritic spines are small protrusions emerging from their parent dendrites, and contain postsynaptic structures such as postsynaptic density and actin filaments and, under certain circumstances, microtubules. It is the cytoskeleton of dendritic spines that regulates the number of AMPA receptors, the assemblies of the highly homologous subunits, anchoring in the postsynaptic zone and receptor trafficking. Thus,it is well helpful to understand that how the cytoskeleton of dendritic spines regulate the AMPA receptor trafficking. This review is focused on the structure and subunit composition, trafficking of AMPA receptors, and the mech-anism regulated by the cytoskeleton. The aim is to help us understand the relationship between the cy-toskeleton and receptor trafficking, and the mechanism of synaptic plasticity.
