A Multiple-Unit Floating Drug Delivery System:Research Progress

Abstract:The floating drug delivery system(FDDS) can prolong gastric residence time(GRT),resulting in increased absorption of the drug and high bioavailability.FDDS can be divided into two forms:single-unit system and multiple-unit system(e.g.pellet,microsphere etc.).From them,the multiple-unit formulations show several advantages over the single-unit ones:smaller individual differences,avoidance of 'all or nothing' gastric emptying,smaller irritant effect of weakly acidic drugs on the stomach and co-administration of units with different release profiles.This article gives a review of preparation,drug release and in vivo study of the floating ability of different multiple-unit FDDS.
