Abstract:In this paper, we first recall some classical results of canonical metrics on holomorphic vector bundles. Then, we introduce our results about the existence of admissible approximate Hermitian-Einstein structures on semi-stable reflexive Higgs sheaves and the related Bogomolov type inequality.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce notions of nonlinear stabilities for a relative ample line bundle over a holomorphic fibration and define the notion of a geodesic-Einstein metric on this line bundle, which generalize the classical stabilities and Hermitian-Einstein metrics of holomorphic vector bundles. We introduce a Donaldson type functional and show that this functional attains its absolute minimum at geodesic-Einstein metrics, and we also discuss the relations between the existence of geodesic-Einstein metrics and the nonlinear stabilities of the line bundle. As an application, we will prove that a holomorphic vector bundle admits a Finsler-Einstein metric if and only if it admits a Hermitian-Einstein metric, which answers a problem posed by S. Kobayashi.

Abstract:In this paper, we study semi-stable Higgs sheaves over compact Kähler manifolds. We prove that there is an admissible approximate Hermitian-Einstein structure on a semi-stable reflexive Higgs sheaf and consequently, the Bogomolov type inequality holds on a semi-stable reflexive Higgs sheaf.

Abstract:Let $${\overline M}$$ be a compact complex manifold of complex dimension two with a smooth Kähler metric and D a smooth divisor on $${\overline M}$$ . If E is a rank 2 holomorphic vector bundle on $${\overline M}$$ with a stable parabolic structure along D, we prove that there exista a Hermitian-Einstein metric on $$E\prime = E\vert_{{\overline M}\backslash D}$$ compatible with the parabolic structure, whose curvature is square integrable.

Abstract:We discover a “no semistability at infinity” phenomenon for complete Calabi-Yau metrics asymptotic to cones, which is proved by eliminating the possible appearance of an intermediate K-semistable cone in the 2-step degeneration theory developed by Donaldson and the first author. It is in sharp contrast to the setting of local singularities of Kähler-Einstein metrics. A byproduct of the proof is a polynomial convergence rate to the asymptotic cone for such manifolds, which bridges the gap between the general theory of Colding-Minicozzi and the classification results of Conlon-Hein.

Abstract:In this article we completely describe the existence of canonical metrics, known as optimal symplectic connections, on isotrivial Kähler fibrations. In this setting an optimal symplectic connection is induced from a Hermite--Einstein connection on the holomorphic principal bundle of relative automorphisms, and the Hitchin--Kobayashi correspondence asserts the existence of such a connection precisely when the principal bundle is polystable. Combined with results of Dervan and Sektnan this generates many new examples of cscK metrics on the total space of holomorphic fibre bundles. Our results indicate that in general the optimal symplectic connection equation should be viewed as a generalisation of the Hermite--Einstein equation to holomorphic fibrations where the complex structure of the fibres varies.

Abstract:We prove that a generically regular semisimple Higgs bundle equipped with a non-degenerate symmetric pairing on any Riemann surface always has a harmonic metric compatible with the pairing. We also study the classification of such compatible harmonic metrics in the case where the Riemann surface is the complement of a finite set $D$ in a compact Riemann surface. In particular, we prove the uniqueness of a compatible harmonic metric if the Higgs bundle is wild and regular semisimple at each point of $D$.

Abstract:In \cite{B3}, Bridgeland defined a geometric structure, named a Joyce structure, conjectured to exist on the space $M$ of stability conditions of a $CY_3$ triangulated category. Given a non-degeneracy assumption, a feature of this structure is a complex hyper-Kähler metric with homothetic symmetry on the total space $X = TM$ of the holomorphic tangent bundle. \par Generalising the isomonodromy calculation which leads to the $A_2$ Joyce structure in \cite{BM}, we obtain an explicit expression for a hyper-Kähler metric with homothetic symmetry via construction of the isomonodromic flows of a Schrödinger equation with deformed polynomial oscillator potential of odd degree $2n+1$. The metric is defined on a total space $X$ of complex dimension $4n$ and fibres over a $2n$--dimensional manifold $M$ which can be identified with the unfolding of the $A_{2n}$-singularity. The hyper-Kähler structure is shown to be compatible with the natural symplectic structure on $M$ in the sense of admitting an \textit{affine symplectic fibration} as defined in \cite{BS}. \par Separately, using the additional conditions imposed by a Joyce structure, we consider reductions of Plebański's heavenly equations that govern the hyper-Kähler condition. We introduce the notion of a \textit{projectable hyper-Lagrangian} foliation and show that in dimension four such a foliation of $X$ leads to a linearisation of the heavenly equation. The hyper-Kähler metrics constructed here are shown to admit such a foliation.

Abstract:We prove that a torsion-free sheaf $\mathcal F$ endowed with a singular hermitian metric with semi-positive curvature and satisfying the minimal extension property admits a direct-sum decomposition $\mathcal F \simeq \mathcal U \oplus \mathcal A$ where $\mathcal U$ is a hermitian flat bundle and $\mathcal A$ is a generically ample sheaf. The result applies to the case of direct images of relative pluricanonical bundles $f_* \omega_{X/Y}^{\otimes m}$ under a surjective morphism $f\colon X \to Y$ of smooth projective varieties with $m\geq 2$. This extends previous results of Fujita, Catanese--Kawamata, and Iwai.

Abstract:On asymptotically complex hyperbolic (ACH) Einstein manifolds, we consider a certain variational problem for almost complex structures compatible with the metric, for which the linearized Euler-Lagrange equation at Kähler-Einstein structures is given by the Dolbeault Laplacian acting on $(0,1)$-forms with values in the holomorphic tangent bundle. A deformation result of Einstein ACH metrics associated with critical almost complex structures for this variational problem is given. It is also shown that the asymptotic expansion of a critical almost complex structure is determined by the induced (possibly non-integrable) CR structure on the boundary at infinity up to a certain order.

On canonical metrics of complex surfaces with split tangent and related geometric PDEs

Abstract:In this paper, we study bi-Hermitian metrics on complex surfaces with split holomorphic tangent bundle and construct 2 types of metric cones. We introduce a new type of fully non-linear geometric PDE on such surfaces and establish smooth solutions. As a geometric application, we solve the prescribed Bismut Ricci problem. In various settings, we obtain canonical metrics on 2 important classes of complex surfaces: primary Hopf surfaces and Inoue surfaces of type $\mathcal{S}_{M}$.

Abstract:This paper describes how, in the case of algebraic surfaces, the well-known theorem of Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau can be proved in a framework of generalized 'multiplier ideal sheaves', following the ideas of Siu. The key concept is that the destabilizing sheaf satisfies a differential inclusion relation. This relation is used, together with a complex Frobenius theorem for locally finitely generated subsheaves, to imply coherence of the destabilizing subsheaf.

Abstract:We consider the moduli space of vector bundles of rank $n$ and degree $ng$ over a fixed Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 2$. We use the explicit parametrization in terms of the Tyurin data. In the moduli space there is a "non-abelian" Theta divisor, consisting of bundles with $h^1\geq 1$. On the complement of this divisor we construct a non-abelian Cauchy kernel explicitly in terms of the Tyurin data. With the additional datum of a non-special divisor, we can construct a reference flat holomorphic connection which is also dependent holomorphically on the moduli of the bundle. This allows us to identify the bundle of Higgs fields, i.e. the cotangent bundle of the moduli space, with the affine bundle of holomorphic connections and provide a monodromy map into the ${\rm GL}_n$ character variety. We show that the Goldman symplectic structure on the character variety pulls back along this map to the complex canonical symplectic structure on the cotangent bundle and hence also on the space of affine connections. The pull-back of the Liouville one-form to the affine bundle of connections is then shown to be a logarithmic form with poles along the non-abelian theta divisor and residue given by $h^1$.

Abstract:The moduli space of stable Higgs bundles of degree $0$ is equipped with the hyperkähler metric, called the Hitchin metric. On the locus where the spectral curves are smooth, there is the hyperkähler metric called the semi-flat metric, associated with the algebraic integrable systems with the Hitchin section. We prove the exponentially rapid decay of the difference between the Hitchin metric and the semi-flat metric along the ray $(E,t\theta)$ as $t\to\infty$.

Abstract:We relate Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of higher rank vector bundles to quantum-classical hybrid systems and quantization in stages of symplectic fibrations. We apply this picture to the analysis and geometry of vector bundles, including the spectral gap of the Berezin transform and the convergence rate of Donaldson's iterations towards balanced metrics on stable vector bundles. We also establish refined estimates in the scalar case to compute the rate of Donaldson's iterations towards balanced metrics on Kähler manifolds with constant scalar curvature.

Abstract:Given a generic ray of Higgs bundles $(\overline{\partial}_E, t\varphi)$, we describe the corresponding family of hermitian metrics $h_t$ solving Hitchin's equations via gluing methods. In the process, we construct a family of approximate solutions $h_t^{\mathrm{app}}$ which differ from the actual harmonic metrics $h_t$ by error terms of size $\mathrm{e}^{-\delta t}$. Such families of explicit approximate solutions have already proved useful for answering finer questions about the asymptotic geometry of the Hitchin moduli space.
