The Themes of Singaporean Poet Khoo Seok Wan’s Nanyang Chinese Poetry

Abstract:China’s late-Qing political and social instability caused many intellectuals to emigrate to Nanyang ( Southeast Asia) , especially Singapore and Malaya. Among them there was an established scholar, Khoo Seok Wan, who devoted himself passionately to publishing Chinese newspaper, cultivating Chinese education, and form-ing Chinese poetry association overseas. A leader of Chinese literary society in Singapore in the early 20th century, he made a huge financial donation to China’s Hundred Days Reform and was sternly warned by the Late Qing gov-ernment. Throughout Khoo Seok Wan’s life, his rootedness and patriotism in his homeland, China, is undoubtedly true, likes Zuo Binglong, and Huang Zunxian. At the same time, his poetry also carries his feelings and love for the land, life and people of Singapore. In Khoo Seok Wan’s poems, we can learn the history of Chinese poetry that has spread in Southeast Asia, as well as the struggle and evolution of the minds of Chinese immigrants.
