Abstract:Topological semimetals have attracted significant attentions owing to their potential applications in numerous fields such as low-power electron devices and quantum computation, which are closely related to their thermal transport properties. In this work, the phonon transport properties of topological Dirac nodal-line semimetals ZrGeX (X = S, Se, Te) with the PbClF-type structures are systematically studied using the first-principles calculations combined with the Boltzmann transport theory. The obtained lattice thermal conductivities show an obvious anisotropy, which is caused by the layer structures of ZrGeX (X = S, Se, Te). The room-temperature lattice conductivity of ZrGeTe along c direction is found to be as low as 0.24 W m(-1) K-1, indicating that it could be of great significance in the fields of thermal coating materials and solar cell absorber. In addition, we extract each phonon branch from group velocities, phonon scattering rates, Gruneisen parameters, and phase space volumes to investigate the mechanism underlying the low thermal conductivity. It is concluded that the difference of thermal conductivities of three materials may be caused by the number of scattering channels and the effect of anharmonic. Furthermore, the phonon mean free path along a direction is relatively longer. Nanostructures or polycrystalline structures may be effective to reduce the thermal conductivity and improve the thermoelectric properties.

Abstract:The lattice thermal conductivity of CsCl crystal is theoretically investigated from a first-principles theoretical approach based on an iterative solution of the Boltzmann transport equation. Real-space finite-difference supercell approach is employed to generate the harmonic and anharmonic interatomic force constants. Phonon frequencies, velocities, and specific heat capacity as well as anharmonic properties are then obtained and applied to calculate the bulk thermal conductivity of CsCl crystal at the temperatures ranging from 20K to 700K. The calculated lattice thermal conductivity 1.14W/mK of CsCl at room temperature agrees well with the experimental value, demonstrating that this parameter-free approach can provide a good description for the thermal transport of this material. The RTA and iterative solution of BTE are both presented. Our results show that both methods can obtain the thermal conductivity successfully.

Abstract:Recently, monolayer hexagonal PdTe2 (t-PdTe2) has increasingly promised a great potential in both thermoelectric and thermal management application due to its high Seebeck coefficient and intrinsic large band gap. Here, we investigate the thermal conductivity of monolayer t-PdTe2 and its Janus structures utilizing nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations (NEMD). The dimensional parameters and temperature dependence of their thermal conductivities are discussed and simulations results indicate that the thermal conductivity of t-PdTe2 increase with the increasing length, while decrease with the increasing layers due to the existence of van der Waals force between layers. Interestingly, it was found that the lowest thermal conductivity of Janus structure is attributed to the large phonon scattering from mass disorders and the breakdown of inversion symmetry compared with pristine one. Moreover, the effect of temperature on the thermal conductivity of t-PdTe2 and its Janus structures are discussed. Our study is beneficial for thermal management of nanodevices and optimizing the thermoelectric properties of t-PdTe2 based materials.

Abstract:Dirac semimetal PdTe2 single-crystal temperature-dependent ultrafast carrier and phonon dynamics were studied using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Quantitative analysis revealed a fast relaxation process (τf) occurring at a subpicosecond time scale originating from electron–phonon thermalization. This rapid relaxation was followed by a slower relaxation process (τs) on a time scale of ∼ 7-9.5 ps which originated from phonon-assisted electron–hole recombination. Two significant vibrational modes resolved at all measured temperatures. These modes corresponded to in-plane (Eg), and out-of-plane (A1g), Te atoms motion. Test results suggested that pure dephasing played an important role in the relaxation processes. Analysis of the electron–phonon coupling constant suggested that the A1g mode contributes greatly to the superconductivity, and high-frequency phonons are also involved forming of Cooper pairs. Our observations should improve the understanding of complex superconductivity of PdTe2.

Abstract:Based on first-principles calculations, the current study deeply explores the thermoelectric properties of the Zintl compound SrPdTe. We found that the anharmonic vibration of Pd atoms plays an important role in the quartic anharmonic effect and the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity. In the crystalline structure, Sr atoms form octahedra with eight surrounding Te atoms, while Pd atoms are located in the gaps between the octahedra. This structure makes the strong atomic mean square displacement of Pd atoms the main factor leading to the ultralow thermal conductivity. The study also reveals the effects of phonon frequency renormalization and four-phonon scattering on heat transfer performance. Even considering the spin-orbit coupling effect, multiple secondary valence band tops maintain the power factor of the material at high temperatures, providing a potential opportunity for achieving excellent thermoelectric performance.

Abstract:Abstract We have determined the electron–phonon interaction in type II Dirac semimetallic 1T-PdTe 2 by means of helium atom scattering. While 1T-PdTe 2 is isostructural with 1T-PtTe 2 , only the former is superconductor. The difference can be traced to the substantially larger value of the electron–phonon coupling in 1T-PdTe 2 , λ = 0.58, obtained from the Debye-Waller attenuation of the He specular peak. With this value and the surface Debye temperature, Θ D = 106.2 K, we have figured out the superconducting critical temperature, T c = 1.83 K given by the BCS theory, which is in good agreement with T c = (1.95 ± 0.03) K obtained with low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. The value of the effective mass related to Θ D indicates that the large electron–phonon coupling in 1T-PdTe 2 is due to coupling, not only with the zone-center optical mode O 2 at 9.2 meV, as proposed in a recent theoretical study, but also with the zone-boundary acoustic mode LA. Our results suggest that the topological states of a Dirac cone play a negligible role on the onset of superconductivity.

Abstract:Narrow-gap lead telluride crystal is an important thermoelectric and mid-infrared material in which phonon functionality is a critical issue to be explored. In this Letter, efficient phonon blockage by forming a polar CdTe/PbTe heterojunction is explicitly observed by Raman scattering. The unique phonon screening effect can be interpreted by recent discovery of high-density two dimensional electrons at the polar CdTe/PbTe(111) interface which paves a way for design and fabrication of thermoelectric devices.
Electronic transport properties of intermediately coupled superconductors: PdTe2 and Cu0.04PdTe2

Abstract:We have investigated the electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity of PdTe2 and 4% Cu intercalated PdTe2 compounds. Electrical resistivity for the compounds shows Bloch-Gruneisen type linear temperature (T) dependence for 100 K < T < 480 K, and Fermi liquid behavior (~ T^2) below 50 K. Seebeck coefficient data exhibit strong competition between Normal (N) and Umklapp (U) scattering processes at low T. Though our results indicate the transfer of charge carriers to PdTe2 upon Cu intercalation, it is difficult to discern any change in the Fermi surface of the compound by Nordheim-Gorter plots. The estimated Fermi energies of the compounds are quite comparable to good metals Cu, Ag and Au. The low T, thermal conductivity (k) of the compounds is strongly dominated by the electronic contribution, and exhibits a rare linear T dependence below 10 K. However, high T, k(T) shows usual 1/T dependence, dominated by U scattering process. The electron phonon coupling parameters, estimated from the low T, specific heat data and first principle electronic structure calculations suggest that PdTe2 and Cu0.04PdTe2 are intermediately coupled superconductors.

Abstract:We have performed first principles thermal conductivity calculation of thermoelectric materials. For a p-type half-Heusler compound, the harmonic and anharmonic force constants were obtained from a set of force-displacement data calculated by density functional theory calculations. Thermal conductivity was calculated by two different methods; (1) Boltzmann-Peierls formula with phonon relaxation times calculated by either Fermi's golden rule of three-phonon scattering processes or spectral analysis of molecular dynamics phase space trajectories and (2) Green-Kubo formula for heat current obtained by equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The validity of the method is also demonstrated for a crystal with much lower thermal conductivity, namely lead telluride. By having access to accurate phonon-dependent transport properties, the contribution from an arbitral subset of phonon modes can be quantified, which helps understanding the influence of nanostructures on thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Recently, there has been renewed interest in thermoelectric materials based on germanium telluride, which demonstrate high efficiency in mid-temperature range. This paper discusses the theoretical description of the phonon spectrum and lattice thermal conductivity in GeTe using ab initio methods. Using these methods, the temperature dependence of the lattice thermal conductivity in the rhombohedral phase was calculated and effects of scattering by point defects and nanostructuring were estimated. The modification of the phonon spectrum upon the transition to the high-temperature cubic phase is investigated. The calculated temperature dependences of the lattice thermal conductivity are compared with the available experimental data on GeTe and its solid solutions. Abstract:PbTe, one of the most promising thermoelectric materials, has recently demonstrated a thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of above 2.0 when alloyed with group II elements. The improvements are due mainly to significant reduction of lattice thermal conductivity (κl), which was in turn attributed to nanoparticle precipitates. However, a fundamental understanding of various phonon scattering mechanisms within the bulk alloy is still lacking. In this work, we apply the newly-developed density-functional-theory-based compressive sensing lattice dynamics approach to model lattice heat transport in PbTe, MTe, and Pb0.94M0.06Te (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) and compare our results with experimental measurements, with focus on the strain effect and mass disorder scattering. We find that (1) CaTe, SrTe, and BaTe in the rock-salt structure exhibit much higher κl than PbTe, while MgTe in the same structure shows anomalously low κl; (2) lattice heat transport of PbTe is extremely sensitive to static strain induced by alloying atoms in solid solution form; (3) mass disorder scattering plays a major role in reducing κl for Mg/Ca/Sr-alloyed PbTe through strongly suppressing the lifetimes of intermediate- and high-frequency phonons, while for Ba-alloyed PbTe, precipitated nanoparticles are also important.

Abstract:The structural and thermal properties of bulk Td-WTe2 have been studied by using first-principles calculations. We find that the lattice thermal conductivity of WTe2 is anisotropic, with the highest value along a-axis and lowest one along the c-axis at 300 K. Our calculated size dependent thermal conductivity shows that nanostructuring of WTe2 can possibly further decrease the lattice thermal conductivity. Such extremely low thermal conductivity, even much lower than WSe2, makes WTe2 attractive for use as thermal-insulation material for thermoelectric devices.

Abstract:We present a detailed quantum oscillatory study on the Dirac type-II semimetallic candidates PdTe$_{2}$ and PtTe$_{2}$ \emph{via} the temperature and the angular dependence of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) effects. In high quality single crystals of both compounds, i.e. displaying carrier mobilities between $10^3$ and $10^4$ cm$^2$/Vs, we observed a large non-saturating magnetoresistivity (MR) which in PtTe$_2$ at a temperature $T = 1.3$ K, leads to an increase in the resistivity up to $5 \times 10^{4}$ % under a magnetic field $\mu_0 H = 62$ T. These high mobilities correlate with their light effective masses in the range of 0.04 to 1 bare electron mass according to our measurements. For PdTe$_{2}$ the experimentally determined Fermi surface cross-sectional areas show an excellent agreement with those resulting from band-structure calculations. Surprisingly, this is not the case for PtTe$_{2}$ whose agreement between calculations and experiments is relatively poor even when electronic correlations are included in the calculations. Therefore, our study provides a strong support for the existence of a Dirac type-II node in PdTe$_2$ and probably also for PtTe$_2$. Band structure calculations indicate that the topologically non-trivial bands of PtTe$_2$ do not cross the Fermi-level ($\varepsilon_F$). In contrast, for PdTe$_2$ the Dirac type-II cone does intersect $\varepsilon_F$, although our calculations also indicate that the associated cyclotron orbit on the Fermi surface is located in a distinct $k_z$ plane with respect to the one of the Dirac type-II node. Therefore it should yield a trivial Berry-phase.
Two-dimensional Superconductivity and Topological States in PdTe2 Thin Films

Abstract:We report on a bottom-up approach via molecular-beam epitaxy to grow high-quality crystalline two-dimensional films of PdTe2 on SrTiO3 (001), and investigation on the electronic and superconducting properties therein by using scanning tunneling microscopy and transport experiments in combination with first-principles calculations. We observed a transition from the narrow-gap semiconducting phase in the monolayer to the metallic phase in the multilayer films. Importantly, all the multilayer films exhibited robust superconductivity, whose transition temperatures in the ultrathin limit were obviously higher than expected from the empirical inverseof-thickness dependence and could be further enhanced through magnesium intercalation. Our first-principles studies revealed thickness-tuned band topology caused by the significant orbital-dependent interlayer coupling, which explained the experimentally observed thickness-dependent behaviors of atomic and electronic properties. Combined with the prediction of topologically nontrivial states introduced by honeycomb lattice of p orbitals, PdTe2 thin films are promising material candidates for exploring the interplay between superconductivity and topology in the two-dimensional limit.
Abnormal Thickness-Dependent Thermal Transport in Suspended 2D PdSe2

Abstract:Research on 2D materials originally focused on the highly symmetrical materials like graphene, h-BN. Recently, 2D materials with low-symmetry lattice such as PdSe2 have drawn extensive attention, due to the interesting layer-dependent bandgap, promising mechanical properties and excellent thermoelectric performance, etc. In this work, the phonon thermal transport is studied in PdSe(2 )with a pentagonal fold structure. The thermal conductivity of PdSe(2 )flakes with different thicknesses ranging from few nanometers to several tens of nanometers is measured through the thermal bridge method, where the thermal conductivity increases from 5.04 W mK(-1) for 60 nm PdSe2 to 34.51 W mK(-1) for the few-layer one. The atomistic modelings uncover that with the thickness thinning down, the lattice of PdSe2 becomes contracted and the phonon group velocity is enhanced, leading to the abnormal increase in the thermal conductivity. And the upshift of the optical phonon modes contributes to the increase of the thermal conductivity as well by creating less acoustic phonon scattering as the thickness reduces. This study probes the interesting abnormal thickness-dependent thermal transport in 2D materials, which promotes the potential thermal management at nanoscale.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials featuring anisotropic structural, vibrational, and thermal properties offer new and exciting opportunities to enable efficient energy conversion and thermal management. Beyond the most apparent anisotropy in 2D materials, due to distinct in-plane and out-of-plane (intralayer and interlayer) thermal transport, certain systems also present in-plane thermal anisotropy, whose origin may be more subtle. Here, we report on the vibrational and thermal properties of PdSe 2 crystals, obtaining the complete (diagonal) elements of the thermal conductivity tensor (k ij ), and their low-frequency (GHz, Brillouin) and high-frequency (THz, Raman) lattice vibrations. Remarkably, we observe substantial anisotropy for the in-plane directions with k y /k x =1.38. By performing ab initio calculations of the vibrational modes, we demonstrate that this anisotropy arises from the strong lattice anharmonicity. This is reflected by the enhanced coupling between acoustic and low-energy optical branches along the [100] crystallographic direction (x-axis), where vibrational anharmonicity is larger than in the [010] direction (y-axis).

Ab initio Investigation of Thermal Transport in Insulators: Unveiling the Roles of Phonon Renormalization and Higher-Order Anharmonicity

Abstract:The occurrence of thermal transport phenomena is widespread, exerting a pivotal influence on the functionality of diverse electronic and thermo-electric energy-conversion devices. The traditional first-principles theory governing the thermal and thermodynamic characteristics of insulators relies on the perturbative treatment of interatomic potential and ad-hoc displacement of atoms within supercells. However, the limitations of these approaches for highly anharmonic and weakly bonded materials, along with discrepancies arising from not considering explicit finite temperature effects, highlight the necessity for a well-defined quasiparticle approach to the lattice vibrations. To address these limitations, we present a comprehensive numerical framework in this study, designed to compute the thermal and thermodynamic characteristics of crystalline semiconductors and insulators. The self-consistent phonon renormalization method we have devised reveals phonons as quasiparticles, diverging from their conventional characterization as bare normal modes of lattice vibration. The extension of the renormalization impact to interatomic force constants (IFCs) of third and fourth orders is also integrated and demonstrated. For the comprehensive physical insights, we employed an iterative solution of the Peierls-Boltzmann transport equation (PBTE) to determine thermal conductivity and carry out Helmholtz free energy calculations, encompassing anharmonicity effects up to the fourth order. In this study, we utilize our numerical framework to showcase its applicability through an examination of phonon dispersion, phonon linewidth, anharmonic phonon scattering, and temperature-dependent lattice thermal conductivity in both highly anharmonic materials (NaCl and AgI) and weakly anharmonic materials (cBN and 3C-SiC).

Abstract:By using first principles calculations, we obtain the lattice thermal conductivity of graphene, silicene, germanene and stanene. The thermal conductivity decreases monotonically as the atom changes from C to Si and to Ge. Unusual thermal conductivity is observed in stanene. The competing effects between conventional criteria and certain basic vibrational properties are important to understand the phonon transport properties of two-dimensional group-IV materials. The unusual vibrational properties of stanene, including a large a-o gap and the bunching of the acoustic phonon branches, significantly reduce phonon scattering. This work also suggests that germanene is highly adaptable for thermoelectric applications due to its low lattice thermal conductivity.
