Abstract:Nanostructures of inorganic semiconductors have revolutionized many areas of electronics, optoelectronics and photonics. The controlled synthesis of semiconductor nanostructures could lead to novel physical properties, improved optoelectronic device performance and new areas for exploration. Lead halide perovskites have recently excited the photovoltaic research community owing to their high solar-conversion efficiencies and ease of solution processing; they also hold great promise for optoelectronic applications, such as light-emitting diodes and lasers. In this Review, we summarize recent developments in the synthesis and characterization of metal halide perovskite nanostructures with controllable compositions, dimensionality, morphologies and orientations. We examine the advantageous optical properties, improved stability and potential optoelectronic applications of these 1D and 2D single-crystal perovskite nanostructures and compare them with those of bulk perovskites and nanostructures of conventional semiconductors. Studies in which perovskite nanostructures have been used to study the fundamental physical properties of perovskites are also highlighted. Finally, we discuss the challenges in realizing halide perovskite nanostructures for optoelectronic and photonic applications and offer our perspectives on future opportunities and research directions.

Abstract:The recent success of organometallic halide perovskites (OHPs) in photovoltaic devices has triggered lots of corresponding research and many perovskite analogues have been developed to look for devices with comparable performance but better stability. Upon the preparation of all inorganic halide perovskite nanocrystals (IHP NCs), research activities have soared due to their better stability, ultrahigh photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY), and composition dependent luminescence covering the whole visible region with narrow line-width. They are expected to be promising materials for next generation lighting and display, and many other applications. Within two years, a lot of interesting results have been observed. Here, the synthesis of IHPs is reviewed, and their progresses in optoelectronic devices and optical applications, such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), photodetectors (PDs), solar cells (SCs), and lasing, is presented. Information and recent understanding of their crystal structures and morphology modulations are addressed. Finally, a brief outlook is given, highlighting the presently main problems and their possible solutions and future development directions.

Abstract:Halide perovskites have emerged as a class of promising semiconductor materials owing to their remarkable optoelectronic properties exhibiting in solar cells, light-emitting diodes, semiconductor lasers, etc. Inorganic halide perovskites are attracting increasing attention because of the higher stability toward moisture, light, and heat as compared with their organic-inorganic hybrid counterparts. In particular, inorganic halide perovskite nanomaterials provide controllable morphology, tunable optoelectronic properties, and improved quantum efficiency. Here, the development controlled synthesis of desired inorganic halide perovskite nanostructures by various chemical approaches is described. Utilizing these nanostructures as platforms, anion exchange chemistry for wide compositional and optical tunabilities is described, and the rich structural phase transition phenomenon and mechanism investigated systematically. Furthermore, these nanostructures and extracted knowledge are applied to design photonic, photovoltaic, and thermoelectric devices. Finally, future directions and challenges toward improvement of the optical, electrical, and optoelectronic properties, exploration of the anion and cation exchange kinetics, and alleviation of the stability and toxicity issues in inorganic lead based halide perovskites are discussed to provide an outlook on this promising field.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have demonstrated considerable promise across various optoelectronic applications. Surface passivation serves as a pivotal strategy to obtain high‐quality perovskite materials, either in a manner of bulk thin film or nanocrystal, with superior optoelectronic properties and stability. The current research focus in this regard primarily revolves around the use of organic molecules to passivate the surface of perovskites. However, organic passivation molecules always suffer from chemical instability and weak secondary bonding modes, resulting in an unstable surface passivation motif. Inorganic materials, possessing more stable chemical structures and stronger chemical bonding than their organic counterparts, offer the opportunities to construct more robust passivation for the perovskite surfaces. Herein, in this review, we summarized and assessed recent advancements in inorganic surface passivation strategies for perovskite materials and devices, ranging from nanocrystals to bulk films. By discussing the mechanisms behind various inorganic passivation strategies, we aim to offer mechanistic insights and guidelines for future developments of more targeted surface passivation approaches tailored for perovskite materials and devices.

Abstract:All-inorganic trihalide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are emerging as a new class of superstar semiconductors with excellent optoelectronic properties and great potential for a broad range of applications in lighting, lasing, photon detection, and photovoltaics. This article provides an up-to-date review on the developments of fully-inorganic trihalide perovskite NCs by emphasizing their controllable solution fabrication strategies, structural phase transformation, tunable optoelectronic properties, stability, as well as their photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. Among the properties to be surveyed, particular focus is on the size-, shape-, and composition-dependent photoluminescence properties. Finally, by identifying new challenges, suggestions are provided for further research and potential development of this area.

Abstract:All-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals have attracted much attention in recent years due to their long stability, spectral tunability, suitable bandgap, long carrier diffusion length and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Their excellent optical properties and stability make them suitable candidates for optoelectronic devices. In this review, we first provide an up-to-date review on the synthesis of all-inorganic NCs, such as hot-injection, room-temperature, ultrasonication, solvothermal, fast microwave-assisted and amine-free methods. In addition, recent research progress of optoelectronic applications in light emitting diodes and solar cells is presented. Finally, we show the new challenges and give suggestions to make a broad range of applications in the near future.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites represent a flourishing area of research, which is driven by both their potential application in photovoltaics and optoelectronics and by the fundamental science behind their unique optoelectronic properties. The emergence of new colloidal methods for the synthesis of halide perovskite nanocrystals, as well as the interesting characteristics of this new type of material, has attracted the attention of many researchers. This review aims to provide an up-to-date survey of this fast-moving field and will mainly focus on the different colloidal synthesis approaches that have been developed. We will examine the chemistry and the capability of different colloidal synthetic routes with regard to controlling the shape, size, and optical properties of the resulting nanocrystals. We will also provide an up-to-date overview of their postsynthesis transformations, and summarize the various solution processes that are aimed at fabricating halide perovskite-based nanocomposites. Furthermore, we will review the fundamental optical properties of halide perovskite nanocrystals by focusing on their linear optical properties, on the effects of quantum confinement, and on the current knowledge of their exciton binding energies. We will also discuss the emergence of nonlinear phenomena such as multiphoton absorption, biexcitons, and carrier multiplication. Finally, we will discuss open questions and possible future directions.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite nanocrystals, as a new class of light-harvesting and light-emitting materials, have recently attracted a lot of attention for an impressive variety of optoelectronic applications. Some advantages of perovskite nanocrystals include there being low-cost, easy-to-perform synthetic routes, convenient solution processability, precise bandgap tunability over the entire visible spectral range, and exceptionally high photoluminescence quantum yields. In this review, we summarize recent advances of perovskite nanocrystals with an emphasis on the synthetic methods, growth mechanisms, optical properties, and related applications. The focus is placed on emerging new results in terms of the increasing diversity in the synthetic methodologies, ability to control nanoparticle shapes, stability enhancement strategies (including direct syntheses in water), and on the particle formation mechanisms. The basic design principles and up-to-date performance of optoelectronic devices based on perovskite nanocrystals are considered, with a main focus on light-emitting diodes, but also touching upon solar cells, photodetectors, and lasers. We finish the review with a critical outlook into the open issues and future perspective of this versatile, still rapidly developing field.

Abstract:Chalcogenide perovskites are a family of compounds related to perovskite structures or compositions, which have witnessed rapid advances in recent years. They possess favorable properties such as high stability, low toxicity, direct band gaps, good carrier transport abilities, strong light absorption, and potential luminescent properties, making them stand out in emerging applications, such as photovoltaics, photodetectors, light-emitting devices, and photocatalysts, among others. In this review, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the properties, synthesis, and applications of chalcogenide perovskites. First, we first survey the reported material structures/compositions and current understanding of their structural/optical/electrical properties, mechanics, magnetics, and stabilities. Furthermore, we discuss the synthesis strategies of these materials covering various material types such as powders, pellets, thin films, nanocrystals, and single crystals, with a focus on their potential applications, including photovoltaics, photodetectors, and other devices. Finally, we outline a brief conclusion and some prospects for the further research of chalcogenide perovskites, thus promoting more studies and developments in this field. This review can provide new insights into the fundamental properties and potential applications of chalcogenide perovskites, and thereby facilitating their further studies and developments.

Abstract:During the past 8 years, solution-processed organic–inorganic metal halide (OMH) perovskites have become some of the most notable materials because they can exhibit high solar cell efficiency, exceeding 20%. However, due to the volatile and hygroscopic nature of the organic cations, OMH perovskites suffer from chemical instability, especially at high temperatures. Therefore, all-inorganic metal halide (IMH) perovskites (CsBX3, B = Pb, Sn, Ge; X = Cl, Br, I) are rapidly emerging as promising alternatives because of their superior stabilities and comparable properties, such as strong emission, high fluorescence quantum yield and tunable bandgap covering entire visible spectrum. Highlighted by these advantages, IMH perovskites have attracted enormous attention, indicating a promising future. In this review, the recent progress on the syntheses of IMH perovskites is outlined. In addition, the research development of IMH perovskites in optoelectronic devices, such as perovskite solar cells, photodetectors, and light-emitting diodes, is introduced. Finally, the challenges facing the field of IMH perovskites are discussed and some possible solutions based on the available literature are suggested.

Abstract:As an emerging new class of semiconductor nanomaterials, halide perovskite (ABX<sub>3</sub>, X = Cl, Br, or I) nanocrystals (NCs) are attracting increasing attention owing to their great potential in optoelectronics and beyond. This field has experienced rapid breakthroughs over the past few years. In this comprehensive review, halide perovskite NCs that are either freestanding or embedded in a matrix (<i>e.g.</i>, perovskites, metal-organic frameworks, glass) will be discussed. We will summarize recent progress on the synthesis and post-synthesis methods of halide perovskite NCs. Characterizations of halide perovskite NCs by using a variety of techniques will be present. Tremendous efforts to tailor the optical and electronic properties of halide perovskite NCs in terms of manipulating their size, surface, and component will be highlighted. Physical insights gained on the unique optical and charge-carrier transport properties will be provided. Importantly, the growing potential of halide perovskite NCs for advancing optoelectronic applications and beyond including light-emitting devices (LEDs), solar cells, scintillators and X-ray imaging, lasers, thin-film transistors (TFTs), artificial synapses, and light communication will be extensively discussed, along with prospecting their development in the future.

Abstract:Colloidal metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have emerged as promising materials for optoelectronic devices and received considerable attention recently. Their superior photoluminescence (PL) properties provide significant advantages for lighting and display applications. In this Highlight, we discuss recent developments in the design and chemical synthesis of colloidal perovskite NCs, including both organic-inorganic hybrid and all inorganic perovskite NCs. We review the excellent PL properties and current optoelectronic applications of these perovskite NCs. In addition, critical challenges that currently limit the applicability of perovskite NCs are discussed, and prospects for future directions are proposed.

Abstract:The oxide and halide perovskite materials with a ABX3 structure exhibit a number of excellent properties, including a high dielectric constant, electrochemical properties, a wide band gap, and a large absorption coefficient. These properties have led to a range of applications, including renewable energy and optoelectronics, where high-performance catalysts are needed. However, it is difficult for a single structure of perovskite alone to simultaneously fulfill the diverse needs of multiple applications, such as high performance and good stability at the same time. Consequently, perovskite nanocomposites have been developed to address the current limitations and enhance their functionality by combining perovskite with two or more materials to create complementary materials. This review paper categorizes perovskite nanocomposites according to their structural composition and outlines their synthesis methodologies, as well as their applications in various fields. These include fuel cells, electrochemical water splitting, CO2 mitigation, supercapacitors, and optoelectronic devices. Additionally, the review presents a summary of their research status, practical challenges, and future prospects in the fields of renewable energy and electronics.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites are essential materials with great potential for use in optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells, flat-panel displays, solid-state lighting, and detectors, because of the low-cost production through easy processing and the tunable-color emission with narrow line-widths and high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). Lead-halide perovskites manifest high-performance but they suffer from toxicity and poor stability. The stability of the perovskites can be enhanced by reducing dimensionality, doping with transition metals or rare-earth ions, encapsulation of organic polymers, or constructing super-hydrophobic structures. Yet, the obtained stability does not meet the requirements for practical applications. Nanocrystals (NCs) of lead-free metal-halide perovskites are considered as attractive alternatives, on account of their low toxicity, excellent optical characteristics, and promising stability. In this review article, we thoroughly report on the recent progress regarding the development of structure and compositions, surface chemistry, synthesis process, and potential optical characteristics of the lead-free metal-halide perovskite NCs with a strict perovskite structure as well as on their stability and reliability in the light of their potential use in various optoelectronic devices. We also discuss the challenges in this promising field and propose interesting perspectives for further investigation on lead-free halide-perovskite NCs in order to improve the efficiency and the lifetime of devices.

Abstract:As a strong competitor in the field of optoelectronic applications, organic-inorganic metal hybrid perovskites have been paid much attention because of their superior characteristics, which include broad absorption from visible to near-infrared region, tunable optical and electronic properties, high charge mobility, long exciton diffusion length and carrier recombination lifetime, etc. It is noted that perovskite single crystals show remarkably low trap-state densities and long carrier diffusion lengths, which are even comparable with the best photovoltaic-quality silicon, and thus are expected to provide better optoelectronic performance. This paper reviews the recent development of crystal growth in single-, mixed-organic-cation and fully inorganic halide perovskite single crystals, in particular the solution approach. Furthermore, the application of metal hybrid perovskite single crystals and future perspectives are also highlighted.

Abstract:All-inorganic perovskite semiconductors have recently drawn increasing attention owing to their outstanding thermal stability. Although all-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved significant progress in recent years, they still fall behind their prototype organic-inorganic counterparts owing to severe energy losses. Therefore, there is considerable interest in further improving the performance of all-inorganic PSCs by synergic optimization of perovskite films and device interfaces. This review article provides an overview of recent progress in inorganic PSCs in terms of lead-based and lead-free composition. The physical properties of all-inorganic perovskite semiconductors as well as the hole/electron transporting materials are discussed to unveil the important role of composition engineering and interface modification. Finally, a discussion of the prospects and challenges for all-inorganic PSCs in the near future is presented.
