Abstract:Two reorientations of the easy axis of magnetization of Co-capped Fe/Cu(100) ultrathin films can be driven simply by changing the spatial arrangement of the Co atoms. This rearrangement is achieved by annealing and cooling the capped films before each magnetic measurement. Scanning tunneling microscopy images and ab initio calculations indicate that the first transition, a spin flop from the perpendicular to the in-plane direction, results from increasing the average Co island size. Further measurements and ab initio studies show that the reemergence of perpendicular magnetization, which occurs at higher annealing temperatures, is likely to be due to alloying at the Fe-Co interface.

Abstract:The emergence of exchange bias and coercivity enhancement has been investigated in epitaxial CoO/Fe films with varied antiferromagnet (AF) thicknesses, even smaller than the critical value where the frozen CoO spins are detectable. Vector magnetometry and first-order reversal curve (FORC) measurements reveal different CoO thickness dependence of the exchange bias and coercivity enhancement, including the evolution of magnetization reversal from a high coercivity, low bias phase due to rotatable CoO moments to a high bias, low coercivity phase due to frozen CoO moments. The AF domain state is found to be metastable, which can be reoriented by external and exchange fields prior to the appearance of frozen spins, pointing to a generic origin of the training effect. Monte Carlo simulations show that the AF anisotropy energy barrier and the rotatable spins induced by magnetic field and exchange interaction at the interface are responsible for the observed effects.

Abstract:Optical control of magnetic anisotropy in ferromagnetic (FM) metals via non-thermal effects offers an intriguing route for the ultrafast magnetization control. Here, we report on strong modification of exchange-coupling induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA) in Fe/CoO below the Néel temperature of CoO owing to the charge transfer excited by ultrafast laser pulses. This UMA modification by nonthermal effects is manifested as much smaller frequencies of the Fe spin precession in the initial 100-ps time range under the 400-nm pump with charge transfer excitation, compared to the 800-nm pump with pure thermal effects. From the time-dependent frequency shift under a moderate pump fluence of 0.5 mJ/cm2, we determined the magnitude of the UMA attenuation with a highest value of more than 1000 Oe in a duration of 100 ps. The strong UMA attenuation is attributed to the large suppression of the interface exchange coupling as a result of the diminishment of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin order in CoO. Our results give insights into the ultrafast spin modulation in AFM CoO dominated by the electronic process, which can be utilized for efficient driving of the coherent spin motion in the proximate FM metal exchange coupled to CoO.

Abstract:The ability to alter magnetic anisotropy values is of technological importance in the application of magnetic ultrahigh-density recording. By capping some other atoms onto the surface of a magnetic thin film or inserting a thin layer between the magnetic film and the substrate, we can change the surface or interface perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and then alter the magnetic properties of the film, such as the spin reorientation transition (SRT), in ultrathin ferromagnetic films. The SBT of face-centered-tetragonal (fct) Fe films grown on Cu(001) substrate is determined by the magneto-optical Kerr effect. We find that the out-of-plane magnetization changes to in-plane induced by a Ni-capping or a Co-inserting layer at 110 K. From the linear relation of the critical thickness of a fct-Fe film with Ni or Co covering when SBT occurs, the "true" critical thickness of the pure fct-Fe film without coverage or buffer in the absence of structural transformation is obtained by setting the coverage to zero value. The estimated true critical thickness is approximately 4.3 ML for the Ni-capping method and 4.6 ML for the Co-inserting experiment, which are very close to the reported result for the Co-capping experiment.

Abstract:Step-induced antiferromagnetic (AFM) uniaxial anisotropy and its effects on the exchange coupling have been systematically investigated in the epitaxial Fe/CoO bilayers on a MgO(001) vicinal surface. X-ray magnetic linear dichroism measurements proved that the atomic steps induced a strong in-plane AFM uniaxial anisotropy in the CoO film. We found that the thermal activation induced in-plane 90 degrees switching of CoO AFM in-plane spins. The competition among the step-induced AFM anisotropy, the interface exchange coupling, and thermal activation generate a novel multiple in-plane spin reorientation transition of the Fe magnetization, which can further provide new insights on the exchange coupling in FM/AFM systems.

Abstract:Magnetic anisotropy evolution of ultrathin Fe films grown on Pt(001) single-crystal surface is investigated by UHV in situ surface magneto-optical Kerr effect (SMOKE) measurement. After annealing at similar to600K. the magnetic anisotropy of Fe Elm switches from in-plane to perpendicular at, low coverage, leading to a spin reorientation transition (SRT). Meanwhile, in the range of 3-4 monolayer (ML) thickness. the coercivity or the Fe polar hysteresis loop decreases dramatically. Further scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) investigation correlates the magnetic properties with the film structures. We attribute this SRT to the formation of Fe-Pt ordered alloy.

Abstract:Magnetic properties of Co ultrathin films are shown to undergo dramatic changes upon surface carbon accumulation. Chemical transformation from molecular carbon monoxide to surface carbide and to a graphene layer progressively enhances the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of Co. Calculations reveal that magnetocrystalline and magnetostatic contributions play distinctly different roles for the different carbon species. The ability to manipulate magnetic anisotropy is essential for magnetic sensing and storage tools. Surface carbon species offer cost‐effective alternatives to metal‐oxide and noble metal capping layers, inducing perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in ultrathin ferromagnetic films. Here, the different mechanisms by which the magnetism in a few‐layer‐thick Co thin film is modified upon adsorption of carbon monoxide (CO), dispersed carbon, and graphene are elucidated. Using X‐ray microscopy with chemical and magnetic sensitivity, the in‐plane to out‐of‐plane spin reorientation transition in cobalt is monitored during the accumulation of surface carbon up to the formation of graphene. Complementary magneto‐optical measurements show weak perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) at room temperature for dispersed carbon on Co, while graphene‐covered cobalt exhibits a significant out‐of‐plane coercive field. Density‐functional theory (DFT) calculations show that going from CO/Co to C/Co and to graphene/Co, the magnetocrystalline and magnetostatic anisotropies combined promote out‐of‐plane magnetization. Anisotropy energies weakly depend on carbidic species coverage. Instead, the evolution of the carbon chemical state from carbidic to graphitic is accompanied by an exponential increase in the characteristic domain size, controlled by the magnetic anisotropy energy. Beyond providing a basic understanding of the carbon‐ferromagnet interfaces, this study presents a sustainable approach to tailor magnetic anisotropy in ultrathin ferromagnetic films.

Abstract:We report on the effects of O2 and H2 dosing on the magnetism of Co75Fe25 films, highlighting the extreme sensitivity of the magnetic behavior of ultrathin films to specific chemical interactions at the surface. We have performed a systematic in situ study of the magnetic behavior as a function of O2 and H2 dosage on ultrathin CoFe and Co films grown on Cu(110) by means of the magneto-optical Kerr effect and low energy electron diffraction. Oxygen and hydrogen dosing are found to have distinctly different influences on the evolution of the coercive field Hc of the CoFe and Co films. Significant differences become also apparent for the evolution of the M-H loop squareness upon gas adsorption. Oxygen dosing leads to a rapid decrease in squareness above 10L (1L≡10−6Torrs) for CoFe films. For Co films, however, the squareness increases initially and then stabilizes at a higher dosage level. Furthermore, a striking sensitivity of the easy axis magnetization in the CoFe films was observed; 50L of O2 caused a rotation of the easy axis by 60° within the plane. The observed differences between the different gases and between the different ferromagnetic films are briefly discussed in terms of d band occupation and details of chemical bonding.

Abstract:A spin reorientation phase transformation can occur either by a continuous process, such as spin canting, or by an abrupt spin rotation. We investigate the spin reorientation of ultrathin Fe/Cu(100) films induced by Co capping layers using the magneto-optical Kerr effect. The spin axis reorients from the perpendicular to the in-plane direction when the amount of Co exceeds some critical value. Experimental evidence indicates that this transformation involves the formation of multidomains. In the transition thickness regime, we observed that the perpendicular and the in-plane remanent magnetization are complementary, and attribute this to the presence of an inhomogeneous anisotropy field.

Abstract:Exchange-induced in-plane magnetic anisotropies in a single-crystalline Fe/CoO/MgO(001) system were quantitatively investigated using the planar Hall effect as a function of temperature. Field cooling can induce a strong uniaxial anisotropy in Fe film with the easy axis along the CoO〈110〉 directions close to the cooling field direction. The exchange coupling also induces a 4-fold anisotropy with the easy axis along the CoO〈100〉 directions. Our results prove that the strong magneto-crystalline anisotropy of CoO antiferromagnetic spin plays a significant role in exchange-induced anisotropy.

Abstract:The magnetic properties of the ultrathin Fe∕Co∕Cu(100) films grown at 110K with Co underlayer thickness below 2 monolayers (ML) are investigated by means of the in situ magneto-optical Kerr effect. The spin reorientation transitions (SRT) from out-of-plane to in-plane influenced by the Co underlayer are observed. A simplified bilayer growth mode of Co is introduced to fit the experiment results, obtaining that the true critical Fe thickness of a SRT if without structural transformation for a fct Fe on Cu(001) is about 4.6 ML, the same value as the previous Co capping experiment.

Abstract:Magnetic properties of Fe/NiO bilayers grown on a (1,1,10) vicinal surface of Ag(001) were studied by magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD). The orientation of the antiferromagnetically (AFM) aligned spins of NiO films shows an in-plane spin-reorientation transition (SRT) from parallel to perpendicular to the steps with increasing NiO thickness. Two in-plane SRTs of Fe moments are found in dependence of the NiO thickness. The first SRT of the Fe magnetization from parallel to perpendicular to the steps is observed at NiO thickness where antiferromagnetic order is found, the second at the NiO thickness of the SRT in the NiO film. Also, the in-plane SRT of Fe spins driven by a temperature increase is observed. The perpendicular coupling between the Fe and NiO spins is proven. The induced uniaxial anisotropy energy is estimated to be 0.12 erg/cm(2).

Abstract:Magnetic anisotropy is an important character for magnetic materials. In this work, magnetic anisotropy of (110)-oriented ferrimagnetic NiCo2O4 (NCO) thin films deposited epitaxially on MgAl2O4 substrates by pulsed laser deposition is studied and compared with (001)-oriented NCO films. While the (001)-oriented films show a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with the out-of-plane [001] direction as the magnetic easy axis, a jump in magnetic hysteresis loop is observed for the (110)-oriented films with a field applied vertically along the out-of-plane [110] direction. This jump in hysteresis loop is associated with a spin reorientation transition, depending on the applied field and temperature. Magnetic force microscopy reveals that this spin reorientation develops as domains nucleate, grow, and coalesce. This spin reorientation transition is discussed in terms of the competition between different magnetic anisotropy in an external field.

Abstract:CoO/Fe/Ag(001) films were grown epitaxially and studied by X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) and X-ray Magnetic Linear Dichroism (XMLD). After field cooling along the Fe[100] axis to 80 K, exchange bias, uniaxial anisotropy, and 4-fold anisotropy of the films were determined by hysteresis loop and XMCD measurements by rotating the Fe magnetization within the film plane. The CoO frozen spins were determined by XMLD measurement as a function of CoO thickness. We find that among the exchange bias, uniaxial anisotropy, and 4-fold anisotropy, only the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy follows thickness dependence of the CoO frozen spins.

Abstract:The magnetic anisotropy of Fe film grown on vicinal Ag(1,1,10) surfaces studied with the in situ magneto-optic Kerr effect shows oscillatory behavior. We found that both the in-plane step-induced uniaxial anisotropy and the perpendicular anisotropy measured at low temperature show strong oscillations as a function of Fe thickness with a period of ∼5.7 monolayers. Such novel oscillation of the anisotropy is attributed to the quantum well states (QWS) of d-band electrons at the Fermi level in the Fe film. These QWS have been observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy from a Fe wedge films grown on Ag(001) surface. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:The magnetic properties, morphology, and crystallographic structure are studied for Fe films on Cu3Au(100) grown at room and low temperature, using in situ magneto-optical Kerr effect, scanning tunneling microscopy, and electron diffraction techniques. At T = 160 K a spin-reorientation transition from perpendicular to in-plane magnetization occurs in films with Fe coverages starting from a critical thickness of 3.5 and 5.5 ML for room-temperature and low-temperature growth, respectively. Close to the critical thickness we observe an fcc-bcc structural transformation. The spin-reorientation transition is shown to be correlated to this structural change. This correlation may be explained by a drastic reduction of the perpendicular anisotropy induced by the fcc-bcc structural transformation.

Abstract:We investigated magnetic anisotropy and magnetization reversal process in CoPt/FeMn bilayers by four-probe measurements of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) effect. Here, a single crystal-CoPt/polycrystal-FeMn interface has been established, where A1-CoPt layer with four-fold magnetic anisotropy was epitaxially grown on MgO(100) substrate, while the top FeMn layer was 111 textured showing in-plane polycrystalline feature. Due to the noncollinear 3Q AFM spin structure and existence of uncompensated spins in ultrathin FeMn, the magnetic anisotropy of the bilayer can be tuned through interfacial exchange coupling, controlled by field cooling treatment. As a result, it gives rise to asymmetric AMR curves. We show that this asymmetry strongly relies on the direction of induced unidirectional magnetic anisotropy with respect to the easy axis of CoPt layer, leading to a modulated magnetization reversal process.

Abstract:An oscillatory behavior of the tilting angle of magnetization as a function of film thickness at low temperatures is reported for the Fe films grown on Ag(1,1,10). A competition between magnetocrystalline anisotropy and magnetic shape anisotropy tilts the magnetization from the surface plane toward the terrace plane when the magnetization is oriented perpendicular to the step edges. The tilting angle changes with the variation in the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The oscillation period is exactly the same as for the oscillations of the in-plane anisotropy.

Abstract:The magnetic anisotropy of Fe film grown on vicinal Ag(1,1,10) surfaces was studied with the in situ magneto-optic Kerr effect. Below 200 K, strong oscillations of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy as a function of Fe thickness with a period of 5.7 monolayers are found, which can even cause the easy magnetization axis to oscillate between perpendicular and parallel to the steps. Such novel oscillation of the anisotropy is attributed to the quantum well states of d-band electrons at the Fermi level in the Fe film. This is unlike the previously observed oscillatory behaviors of ferromagnetic films caused by the quantum well states in nonmagnetic interfacing layers.

Abstract:Single crystalline FeMn/Co bilayers were grown epitaxially on Cu(001) and investigated by magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE). By doing the MOKE measurement within a rotating magnetic field, we were able to retrieve quantitatively the anisotropy constant of the ferromagnetic Co layer. We show unambiguously that as the FeMn layer changes from paramagnetic (PM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) states, it enhances the interfacial magnetic anisotropy at the FeMn/Co interface by an order of magnitude. A thickness dependent study of the magnetic anisotropy constant revealed that this induced magnetic anisotropy may originate from the FeMn/Co interfacial spin frustration.
