Abstract:An efficient procedure was developed for direct preparation of aryl-substituted lactones from corresponding aryl carboxylic acids, which was promoted by ammonium iodide. In this protocol, aryl carboxylic acids were treated with ammonium iodide, potassium bromide, and oxidant Oxone in a mixture of acetonitrile and 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (6:4) at room temperature for 12 h, resulting in corresponding aryl lactones in moderate to good yields.

Abstract:The one-pot alkoxycarbonylation of halo-free alkylaryl and furanyl alcohols represents a sustainable alternative for the synthesis of alkylaryl and furanyl acetates. In this paper, the reaction between benzyl alcohol, chosen as a model substrate, CH3OH and CO was tested in the presence of a homogeneous palladium catalyst, an activator (isopropenyl acetate (IPAc) or dimethyl carbonate (DMC)) and a base (Cs2CO3). The influence of various reaction parameters such as the CO pressure, ligand and palladium precursor employed, mmol% catalyst load, temperature and time were investigated. The results demonstrate that decreasing the CO pressure from 50 bar to 5 bar at 130 °C for 18 h increases yields in benzyl acetate from 36% to over 98%. Further experiments were performed in the presence of piperonyl and furfuryl alcohol, interesting substrates employed for the synthesis of various fine chemicals. Moreover, furfuryl alcohol is a lignocellulosic-derived building block employed for the synthesis of functionalized furans such as 2-alkylfurfuryl acetates. Both the alcohols were successfully transformed in the corresponding acetate (yields above 96%) in rather mild reaction conditions (5–0.01 mol% catalyst, 5–2 bar CO pressure, 130 °C, 4–18h), demonstrating that the alkoxycarbonylation of alcohols represents a promising sustainable alternative to more impactful industrial practices adopted to date for the synthesis of alkylaryl and furfuryl acetates.

Abstract:A nickel-catalyzed acylation of vinylpyridines with CO at atmospheric pressure is reported, allowing for the expedient approach to synthesize the β-acyl pyridine derivaties with highly regio- and chemoselectivity. The electron-withdrawing property of pyridine plays pivotal roles in activating the alkenyl group, thereby facilitating this carbonylative process. In addition to vinylpyridines, other alkenylheterocycles such as thiazole and quinoline were also suitable for this method.

Abstract:The role of carbodiimide as dehydrant in the chemo-, regio- and stereoselective Pd (II/0)-catalyzed hydrocarboxylation of various alkynes with HCOOH releasing CO in situ is reported for the first time to obtain α , β -unsaturated carboxylic acids. Both symmetrical and unsymmetrical monoalkynes show good reactivity. Importantly, 2,2'-(1,4-phenylene)diacrylic acid can also be synthesized in high yield through the dihydrocarboxylation of 1,4-diethynylbenzene. Besides, an excellent result in gram scale experiment and TON up to 900 can be obtained, displaying the efficiency of this protocol. Notably, regulating the types and concentrations of dehydrant can control the CO generation, avoiding directly operating toxic CO and circumventing sensitivity issue to the CO amount. On the basis of the attractive features of formic acid including easy preparation through CO 2 hydrogenation and efficient liberation of CO, this protocol using formic acid as bridging reagent between CO 2 and CO can be perceived as an indirect utilization of CO 2 , offering an alternative method for preparing acrylic acid analogues. Abstract:We report a one-pot synthesis of aryl carboxylic acids utilizing HCOOH as a CO surrogate with low Pd-catalyst loading. This operationally simple and scalable method does not require use of a high-pressure reactor, two-chamber reaction vessel, phosphine ligand, or base and proceeds in a relatively short amount of time at ambient temperature. Notably, halides, including iodo and bromo groups, and nitro groups remain intact under these mild reaction conditions. This methodology has been successfully applied to synthesizing 13 C-labeled aryl carboxylic acids with satisfactory yields.

Various trisubstituted acrylic acids within an aryl group at the β-position have been prepared efficiently with good regioselectivity under mild conditions. The resulting products could be further transformed to benzoannelated cycles retaining CO2 as a one-carbon synthon.

Abstract:The monoarylation of acetone is a powerful transformation, but is typically performed at temperatures significantly in excess of its boiling point. Conditions described for performing the reaction at ambient temperatures led to significant dehalogenation when applied to a complex aryl halide. We describe our attempts to overcome both issues in the context of our drug-discovery program.

Abstract:Herein, the use of triphenylmethylium tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate as an efficient catalyst for the intermolecular dehydrative coupling of p‐hydroxymandelic acid hydrate with substituted aromatic amines and (thio)phenols was developed, which allows for the preparation of aryl acetic acid derivatives in a convenient manner. Notably, this method offers several advantages, including being metal‐free, prefunctionalization free, high atom efficiency, highc regioselective, and utilizing easily accessible starting materials. Additionally, it exhibits a broad substrate scope, enabling the synthesis of a range of aryl acetic acid derivatives. Furthermore, this method can also be applied to the etherification of arylthiol derivatives, facilitating the preparation of various thiolated products. The readily available starting materials and broad substrate scope enhance the applicability and potential utility of this method in organic synthesis.

Abstract:The use of carbon dioxide as a C1 chemical feedstock remains an active field of research. Here we showcase the use of milled dry ice as a method to promote the availability of CO2 in a reaction solution, permitting practical synthesis of arylcarboxylic acids. Notably, the use of milled dry ice produces marked increases in yields relative to those obtained with gaseous CO2, as previously reported in the literature.

Abstract:Cobalt-catalyzed regioselective three-component arylcarboxylation of acrylate with aryl bromides and carbon dioxide has been developed. The reaction is carried out by using cobalt chloride as a precatalyst and zinc powder as a reducing reagent under CO2 (1 atm) at 40 degrees C. A range of aryl bromides are used for this reaction, leading to a series of valuable carboxylic acids with high regioselectivity and functional-group compatibility. Mechanistic experiments and DFT calculations indicate that this arylcarboxylation reaction involves the reaction of CO2 with a cobalt enolate intermediate to form the C-C bond.

Abstract:The electrocarboxylation of α,α-dichloroarylmethane derivatives in the presence of CO2 was achieved, providing several α-chloroarylacetic acid derivatives with modest yields but high selectivity (chlorinated vs. non-chlorinated or dicarboxylic acid products). The obtained products were then involved in several chemical transformations, underlining their potential as versatile intermediates in synthetic chemistry. Abstract:Despite the recent advances in the selective functionalization of C–C bonds in specific substrates, cleavage and functionalization of C–C bonds in acyclic substrates, such as ethane derivatives, remains challenging. In contrast to the well-developed functionalization of one carbon fragment after C–C bond cleavage, herein, we report a novel electro-reductive carboxylation of C (sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) bond in multi-aryl ethanes with carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) by utilizing both carbon fragments. Thus, this reaction exhibits an atom-, step-economic approach for the synthesis of carboxylic acids, fulfilling principal aspirations of organic synthesis. Moreover, this method features mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope, and good functional group tolerance. Symmetric and asymmetric substrates bearing primary, secondary, or tertiary C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) bonds are all amenable to this strategy, enabling one or two structurally different carboxylic acids to be facilely constructed at the same time. Mechanistic investigations indicate that carbanions might be the key intermediates in this reaction, which could be captured by CO 2 efficiently.

Abstract:A highly selective monomethylation of 2-arylacetonitrile using CO2 is described. The utilization of trimethylamine-borane facilitates the six-electron reduction of CO2. This reaction is the first selective six-electron reductive functionalization of CO2 faciliated by C(sp(3))-H bonds. A variety of 2-arylpropionitrile was obtained in good yields. The reaction could also be applied at the gram scale.

Abstract:An efficient protocol was proposed for the preparation of secondary alcohols in good to excellent yields via photoredox-catalyzed decarboxylative couplings between readily available arylacetic acids and a variety of less reactive (hetero)aromatic aldehydes. The formation of carbanion is the key intermediate in this reaction. Various substituted arylacetic acids and aldehydes were all compatible with this transformation under mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, the current protocol was successfully applied to the direct alcoholization of several drug acids.
