Abstract:The composite cooling technique has been widely applied to advanced gas turbines. A deep understanding of the interactional fundamentals conduces to their design and optimization. In this paper, the conjugate heat transfer characteristics of 6 composite cooling structures were studied and compared using a numerical decoupled analysis method that was presented in a previous work. The contribution of each cooling element, including impingement cooling, convective cooling on pin fins and film hole surface, and film cooling, was quantitatively demonstrated. The results show that for all the 6 structures, impingement cooling contributes most to the overall cooling effectiveness. The second is the film hole convective cooling. The film cooling contributes least, and it even shows negative effects under large coolant mass flow rate conditions. Although the inclined film hole improves the film coverage and increases the contribution of film cooling, the effect of enhanced film hole convective cooling is more significant. Pin fin contributes little to direct improvement of the overall cooling effectiveness. It mainly shares the thermal load on other cooling elements. On the basis of the conclusions, an improved composite cooling structure was designed to verify the analysis and conclusions. This numerical decoupled analysis method is proved to be effective in composite cooling investigation. The decoupled analysis could provide a reference for the design and optimization stages of a gas turbine cooling structure.
