Abstract:A convenient colorimetric sensor based on anti-aggregation of citrate-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) is demonstrated for thiocyanate (SCN−) sensing. The citrate-capped AuNPs aggregated readily in the presence of sulfuric acid, leading to a color change from red to blue. This particle aggregation could be suppressed by SCN−, which had strong protective effect on the gold colloid. The thiocyanate recognition suffers insignificant interference from most of common ions. With this strategy, 1μM of SCN− can be recognized within 5min by naked-eye observation. This simple, selective, and sensitive approach can be potentially applied for SCN− assays in environmental aqueous samples.

Abstract:In this article, a nanosurface molecularly imprinted polymer (MQD@MIP) resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) spectral probe for SCN- was prepared by sol-gel method, using Mxene quantum dot as a matrix, thiocyanate (SCN-) as a template ion, (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) as a functional monomer, tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as the cross-linker, and ammonia as the initiator. The probe produced an RRS peak at 370 nm and exhibits a strong RRS energy transfer (RRS-ET) effect when the MQD@MIP probe identifies SCN-. As the concentration of SCN- increased, the RRS-ET was enhanced, and the signal value of the system decreased linearly at 370 nm, with a determination range of 0.87-5.22 μg/L, and a detection limit of 0.37 μg/L SCN-. This detection method has the characteristics of simplicity, sensitivity, and specific recognition. The RRS method was used to determine SCN- in the sample, with relative standard deviation of 1.95-10.98% and recovery of 89.0-102.8%.

Abstract:A colorimetric method for the determination of thiocyanate (SCN−) ion with a cystamine-modified gold nanoparticle (Au NP) probe is presented. In this method, recognition is based on electrostatic attraction and directional hydrogen bonding between thiocyanate and cystamine on the surface of an Au NP. In phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 5.2, 10 mM), the cystamine-modified Au NPs readily aggregated upon incubation with N,N-dimethyl-1-naphthylamine (denoted “2N”), and a visible change in the color of the solution from red to blue was observed. When present, thiocyanate interacted with the gold nanoparticle probe more prominently than 2N, thereby protecting the gold nanoparticles and attenuating the degree of aggregation. The solution was observed (by the naked eye) to change in color from blue to purple and then back to red as a function of thiocyanate concentration (<10 μM). Iodide was noted to be a significant interferent; however, the optical absorption spectrum in the presence of iodide was fortunately easily distinguished from that for thiocyanate, thereby making it possible to discriminate iodide from thiocyanate. It was possible to determine thiocyanate in human urine samples using this method. This colorimetric method opens up a new avenue for assaying thiocyanate considering its rapid readout and simple implementation, which makes it convenient to determine thiocyanate in biological samples, especially at levels below 100 μM.

Abstract:In various fields, including analytical, environmental, and biochemistry, the detection of ions is significant. A simple probe, 3-(1-((4-aminophenyl)imino)ethyl)-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-2H-pyran-2-one (DPD), was designed for this study and used for the detection of Cu 2+ ions in methanol, based on dehydroacetic acid and phenylenediamine moieties. Binding interactions studies were performed using UV-Vis measurements, which showed selective binding behaviour towards Cu 2+ ions. The HRMS spectral data and Job's plot were used to check the stoichiometry ratio of 2:1 of a probe to Cu 2+ ions. A detection limit of 1.38×10 -7 M for Cu 2+ ions was observed. Theoretical DFT calculations were used to determine the quantum parameters and the energy gap between frontier molecular orbitals. Interestingly, the DPD-Cu 2+ complex acted as a probe for the detection of SCN - ions at a low LOD value, i.e., 1.97×10 -7 M. A novel incidence of reversibility with SCN - ions was reported using the HRMS technique. Next, real water and blood samples were used, and the concentration of Cu 2+ ions was calculated to further analyse the practical applicability of the probe. The DPD probe showed better selectivity and sensitivity than previously reported sensors, especially in complex matrices, where other sensors frequently experience interference and detection limit issues, indicating its potential as an advanced tool for ion detection in various applications.

The Synthesis and Application of a New Thiocyanate Sensor Based on Naphthalimide

Abstract:In this article,a new thiocyanate sensor NNN based on naphthalimide was conveniently synthesized using a simple method,and all the reactions were taken at room temperature. The determination process can be taken out in water and has no interference by any other anions. NNN has large Stocks shift about 100~140 nm in different solvent,and high quantum yield about 0.6 in polar solvent. With the addition of SCN-,the absorption peak of NNN at 417 nm decreases,at the same time a new absorption peak appears at 347 nm,when the concentration of SCN-is up to 1 mmol/L,the peak at 417 nm is disappeared. The absorption wavelength has a blue-shift of 60 nm,the colour of the solution changes from yellow to colorless. This obvious difference in colour is easy to observe by naked eyes. The ratio of two peak values on absorption spectra is linearly related to the concentration of the SCN-in a large range (20 μmol/L ~0.8 mmol/L),this result makes the quantitative analysis of SCN-realizable. The fluorescence of NNN is quenched by the SCN-,the fluorescence quantum yield decreases from 0.33 to 0.02,there is no other anions to interference the detection.
Design a Friendly Nanoscale Chemical Sensor Based on Gold Nanoclusters for Detecting Thiocyanate Ions in Food Industry Applications

Abstract:The surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) induces the aggregation of gold nanoclusters (GNCs), leading to the development of a proposed fluorometric technique for detecting thiocyanate (SCN−) ions based on an anti-aggregation mechanism. This approach is straightforward to execute, highly sensitive, and selective. A significant quenching effect occurs in fluorescence upon using the aggregation agent CTAB in GNCs synthesis, resulting in a transition from intense red fluorescence to dim red. The decrease in fluorescence intensity of GNCs in the presence of CTAB is caused by the mechanism of fluorescence quenching mediated by aggregation. As the levels of SCN− rise, the fluorescence of CTAB-GNCs increases; this may be detected using spectrofluorometry or by visually inspecting under UV irradiation. The recovery of red fluorescence of CTAB-GNCs in the presence of SCN− enables the precise and discerning identification of SCN− within the concentration range of 2.86–140 nM. The minimum detectable concentration of the SCN− ions was 1 nM. The selectivity of CTAB-GNCs towards SCN− ions was investigated compared to other ions, and it was demonstrated that CTAB-GNCs exhibit exceptional selectivity. Furthermore, we believe that CTAB-GNCs have novel possibilities as favorable sensor candidates for various industrial applications. Our detection technique was validated by analyzing SCN− ions in milk samples, which yielded promising results.

Abstract:As thiocyanate (SCN−) acts as an important biomarker in human health assessment, there remains an urgent need to realize rapid and reproducible analysis of SCN− in body fluids. Here, a droplet microfluidic device has been designed and fabricated for SCN− detection in real human serum and saliva using the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique. Only a few minutes are needed for the whole detection process which simply cost a few microliters of real sample. Gold@silver core–shell nanorods (Au@Ag NRs) with a large SERS enhancement factor were selected to capture SCN− ions in body fluids. The intensity of SERS peak at around 2100cm−1, which originates from the –C≡N stretching mode, was used to indicate the concentrations of SCN− ions. Importantly, by generating a droplet environment for mixing reagents and acquiring signals, this microfluidic platform possesses the advantages of an improved reproducibility and reduced time consumption. For practical applications, the SERS-microfluidic system is capable to achieve rapid analysis of SCN− in the presence of human serum, which is very important for realizing the detection in real biological samples. Additionally, SCN− in saliva samples was detected in the SERS-microfluidic chip and the results provide useful information for distinguishing between smokers and nonsmokers.

Abstract:We demonstrated for the first time the observation of surface enhanced Raman scattering of thiocyanate ion on the roughened Au electrode under ultraviolet laser excitation. Its fruitful information was obtained by an algorithm which enables the elucidation of the bond polarizability (derivative) from the Raman intensity. Together with EHMO calculation, the charge transfer pathway between the adsorbed SCN and Au electrode is also proposed.

Abstract:Cyanide is a great threat to public health, environmental safety and homeland security because of its extremely high toxicity and widespread usage in industry. Countering such a threat can be greatly aided by a rapid, sensitive, on-site detection method. Here, a pinhole shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) technique for cyanide sensing has been established, and a limit of detection lower to 1 mu gl(-1) level in water was achieved on a portable Raman spectrometer, owing to the magnificent local electromagnetic field enhancement generated by the interaction between cyanide anion and the uncovered Au surface inside the pinholes. Meanwhile, the silica shell outside the Au core could significantly improve the stability of the substrate by preventing the dissolution of Au in cyanide solution, thereby making this assay more feasible for practical use. The linear range was from 1 to 100 mu gl(-1) with excellent selectivity over thiocyanide and other common ions. For applications on complex matrices such as polluted water, beverages etc., a simple online hydrogen generator was designed and successfully coupled with pinhole SHINERS to achieve a good measurement of cyanide. This pinhole SHINERS-based method is rapid, simple, with good stability and feasibility for the in-field detection of cyanide, and we hope that it will further raise more opportunities for portable SERS applications. Abstract:The concentration of thiocyanate (SCN-) in bodily fluids is a good indicator of potential and severe health issues such as nasal bleeding, goiters, vertigo, unconsciousness, several inflammatory diseases, and cystic fibrosis. Herein, a visual SCN- sensing method has been developed using the enzyme-like nature of positively charged gold quantum dots (Au QDs) mixed with 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). This research also reports a new method of synthesizing positively charged Au QDs directly from gold nanoparticles through a hydrothermal process. Microscopic imaging has showed that the Au QDs were 3-5 nm in size, and the emission wavelength was at 438 nm. Au QDs did not display any enzyme-like nature while mixed up with TMB and H2O2. However, the nanozymatic activity of Au QDs appeared when SCN- was included, leading to a very low detection limit (LOD) of 8 nM and 99-105% recovery in complex media. The steady-state kinetic reaction of Au QDs showed that Au QDs had a lower Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) toward H2O2 and TMB, which indicates that the Au QDs had a higher affinity for H2O2 and TMB than horseradish peroxidase (HRP). A mechanism study has revealed that the scavenging ability of hydroxyl (•OH) radicals by the SCN- group plays an important role in enhancing the sensitivity in this study. The proposed nanozymatic "Off-On" SCN- sensor was also successfully validated in commercial milk samples.

Abstract:A novel ‘D-π-A’ sensor 1 has been designed and prepared via the condensation reaction of 3‑ethyl‑2‑methyl‑1,3‑benzothiazol‑3‑ium iodide and 5‑nitro‑o‑vanillin. Upon treatment with cyanide, sensor 1 exhibited a significant near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence quenching at 663nm. The MS, IR, 1H NMR and DFT methods confirmed that the response of 1 to cyanide is due to the nucleophilic addition reaction, which results in the inhibition of the Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT) process in the sensor. Furthermore, sensor 1 was used for the determination of CN− in HeLa cells.

Abstract:Cyanide anion is a ubiquitous chemical substance in the ecosystem, however, human daily life is severely threatened by its toxicity at any time. In this paper, a novel colorimetric and turn-on chemosensor 4-(4(2,2-difluoro-6-methyl-2H-1,3,2-dioxaborinin-4-yl)buta-1,3-dien-1-yl)-N,N-dimethylaniline (NBF) for detecting cyanide anion was synthesized based on the 4-(dimethylamino)cinnamaldehyde and beta-diketone difluoroboron complex. This fluorescent probe exhibited excellent spectroscopy properties such as large stokes shift, long emission wavelength, and good sensitivity. The detection limit of NBF towards cyanide ion was determined as low as 2.23 mu M. Additionally, the detection mechanism towards cyanide ion was confirmed to be the nucleophilic addition interaction by high resolution mass spectrum (HRMS), H-1 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) titration, and quantum chemistry theory calculation. In addition, the probe NBF had been successfully utilized in detecting cyanide ions in water and food samples as well as imaging in the biological system, which broadened its practical application prospects. Abstract:A chemosensor system has been developed for rapid and selective detection of cyanide. The sensory molecules have the donor-acceptor type of structure and are designed by tuning the LUMO level or their reactivity towards cyanide. This sensory system is able to selectively distinguish cyanide among fluoride and many other anions at micromolar concentrations and instantly detect cyanide at ambient temperatures with a detection limit down to 1.0 mu M. Multiple sensory signals are available and can be used for both qualitative monitoring and quantitative determination of cyanide, including high-contrast visual color change, fluorescence quenching and enhancement in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions.
A Turn-on Fluorescent Chemosensor Based on Aggregation-Induced Emission for Cyanide Detection and Its Bioimaging Applications

Abstract:Numerous efforts are contributed to develop fluorescent sensors for qualitative and quantitative detection of cyanide anion (CN-) as it is inevitably utilized in various fields and detrimental to human health and ecosystem. Herein, a new fluorescent probe TCNT with the feature of aggregation-induced emission was designed and synthesized. Owning a large Stokes shift ((similar to)148 nm) and red fluorescent emission (596 nm), TCNT showed high specific and sensitivity (detection limit equals to 0.35 mu mol L-1) to CN- with a 2.53-fold enhancement of quantum yield in aqueous solution. The recognition mechanism of TCNT sensing cyanide was ascribed to nucleophilic attack of CN- toward vinyl group, which was confirmed by H-1 NMR titration and DFT calculations. Test strips loaded with TCNT demonstrated its convenient detection for cyanide ion in real environment. In addition, because of good biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity, TCNT was applied for monitoring the levels of CN- in HeG-2 cells by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Moreover, fluorescence imaging of isolated organs of mice proved that TCNT is capable of achieving bioimaging in live organisms.
Ultrasensitive electrochemical sensing of catechol and hydroquinone via single-atom nanozyme anchored on MOF-derived porous carbon

Abstract:Single-atom nanozymes (SANs) can significantly enhance the sensitivity and selectivity of electrochemical sensing platforms due to the homogeneity of their active sites, full atom utilization, and high catalytic activity. In this study, we demonstrate the synthesis and characterization of a high-density Co-based single-atom nanozyme anchored on activated MOF-derived porous carbon (Co-AcNC-3) via a cascade anchoring strategy for ultrasensitive, simultaneous electrochemical detection of catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ). The Co-AcNC-3 displays a large specific surface area, high defectivity, and abundant oxygen-containing groups, with Co atoms being atomically dispersed throughout the carbon support via Co–N bonds. The Co-AcNC-3 biosensor exhibits superior electrochemical signals for CC and HQ, with linear ranges of 4.0 μM–300.0 μM. and detection limits of 0.072 μM and 0.034 μM, respectively. Moreover, the Co-AcNC-3 biosensor has shown excellent performance in accurately detecting CC and HQ in actual samples. Our findings highlight the potential of the proposed Co-AcNC-3 biosensor as a reliable and promising sensing platform for determining CC and HQ.

The Sensing Property of Charge-Transfer Chemosensors Tuned by Acceptors for Colorimetric and Fluorometric Detection of CN−/HCN in Solutions and in Gas Phase

Abstract:Cyanide ion (CN-) is highly toxic, and its wide use in industry poses an immediate threat to public safety. Consequently, it is desired to develop reliable and facile methods to detect this dangerous chemical. In this work, four diethylaminoquinoline derivatives (3a-3d) with different 2-vinyl substituents have been constructed for the detection of CN-/HCN via a Michael addition. The electrophilicity of the beta-carbon of 2-vinyl group depends on the electron-withdrawing ability of the substituents, which tune the photophysical properties of sensors and sensing products by varying intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). Among these sensors, 3a displays the best sensing behavior towards CN-, that is, rapid colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent response (similar to 10 s), high sensitivity (LOD = 15 nM) and high selectivity in solutions. The sensing mechanism of a two-step reaction has been clearly demonstrated by H-1 NMR, HRMS and tracking and titration experiments. Moreover, the test strip with 3a has been fabricated with a polyethyl oxide and successfully applied to detect HCN gas (60 ppm) visually and selectively. (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Water toxicity, one of the major concerns for ecosystems and the health of humanity, is usually attributed to inorganic anions-induced contamination. Particularly, cyanide ions are considered one of the most harmful elements required to be monitored in water. The need for cyanide sensing and monitoring has tempted the development of sensing technologies without highly sophisticated instruments or highly skilled operations for the objective of in-situ monitoring. Recent decades have witnessed the growth of noble metal nanomaterials-based sensors for detecting cyanide ions quantitatively as nanoscience and nanotechnologies advance to allow nanoscale-inherent physicochemical properties to be exploited for sensing performance. Particularly, noble metal nanostructure e-based optical sensors have permitted cyanide ions of nanomolar levels, or even lower, to be detectable. This capability lends itself to analytical application in the quantitative detection of harmful elements in environmental water samples. This review covers the noble metal nanomaterials-based sensors for cyanide ions detection developed in a variety of approaches, such as those based on colorimetry, fluorescence, Rayleigh scattering (RS), and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Additionally, major challenges associated with these nano-platforms are also addressed, while future perspectives are given with directions towards resolving these issues.

Abstract:Based on the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) technology, a novel plasmonic nanosensor with high sensitivity and high selectivity was prepared for the detection of trace sulfide ions on an individual Au@Ag nanoparticle. Furthermore, it could be used to monitor the sulfurization on an individual Au@Ag nanoparticle surface observed under dark-field microscopy (DFM).
A Turn-On Fluorescent Chemosensor for Cyanide Ion Detection in Real Water Samples

Abstract:We have designed and synthesized a novel simple colorimetric fluorescent probe with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. Probe 5-(4-(diphenylamine)phenyl) thiophen-2-formaldehyde W exhibited a turn-on fluorescent response to cyanide ion (CN − ), which induces distinct visual color changes. Probe W exhibited a highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescence response for the detection of CN − over a wide pH range (4–11) and in the presence of common interferents. The linear detection of CN − over the concentration range of 4.00–38.00 μM ( R 2 = 0.9916, RSD = 0.02) was monitored by UV-Vis absorption spectrometry (UV-Vis) with the limit of detection determined to be 0.48 μM. The linear detection of CN − over the concentration range of 8.00–38.00 μM was examined by fluorescence spectrophotometry ( R 2 = 0.99086, RSD = 0.031), and the detection limit was found to be 68.00 nM. The sensing mechanisms were confirmed by 1 H NMR spectroscopic titrations, X-ray crystallographic analysis, and HRMS. Importantly, probe W was found to show rapid response, high selectivity, and sensitivity for cyanide anions in real water samples, over the range of 100.17∼100.86% in artificial lake water and 100.54∼101.64% in running water by UV-Vis absorption spectrometry, and over the range of 99.42∼100.71% in artificial lake water and 100.59∼101.17% in running water by fluorescence spectrophotometry. Importantly, this work provides a simple and effective approach which uses an economically cheap and uncomplicated synthetic route for the selective, sensitive, and quantitative detection of CN − ions in systems relevant to the environment and health.
