Abstract:Cervical cancer, which is one of the most common malignant tumor in women and caused by multiple factors comprehensively, leads a serious threat to the life and health of women. In large epidemiologic studies, human papilloma virus (HPV) is associated with cervical cancer in almost 90%of cases, which is the main risk factor for the development of cervical cancer. Nevertheless, carcinogenic mechanism has not been fully elucidated so far. The development of cervical cancer is a complex process of genetic damage, which has a close relationship with the activation of cancer gene mutations, tumor suppressor gene inactivation and antiapoptotic gene overexpression. Survivin is known as an inhibitor of apoptosis protein family, whose unique structure, special group distribution and obvious antiapoptotic effect make it striking. Both increasing level of survivin in accordance with higher grades of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) or cervical cancer and its participating in the dysregulation of normal squamous epithelial cell differentiation through the regulation of cell apoptosis might have a close relationship with the occurrence and development of cervical cancer. Moreover, antisurvivin therapy may decrease proliferation and enhance apoptosis of cancer cells, which will lead to broad application prospects in treatment. The progress of survivin in cervical cancer is now in review.
