Abstract:Hypochlorite (ClO-), a typical reactive oxygen species, plays an irreplaceable roles in various biological processes. In this work, long-wavelength emission carbon dots (LW-CDs) were fabricated through one-step hydrothermal method by using l-cysteine (cys) and neutral red (NR) as precursors for monitoring of hypochlorite and intracellular pH. Characterizations of as-prepared LW-CDs showed that they had excellent water solubility, high optical stability and sensitive response behavior. Fluorescence intensity of LW-CDs decayed in the presence of ClO- linearly from 10 to 162.5 μM (LOD = 1.021 μM) based on static quenching effect with ideal selectivity. Besides, LW-CDs revealed a pH responsive behavior in the pH range of 2.0 to 10.0, exhibited dual good linear relationships in the pH ranges of 4.2-5.8 and 5.8-7.4. The LW-CDs can also be utilized as imaging reagents in Hela living cells owing excellent biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. These results demonstrated that the as-mentioned LW-CDs are expected to serve as excellent long wavelength emitting nanomaterials for fluorescence sensing and monitoring of cell fluctuations.

Abstract:Luminescent nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) with high fluorescence quantum yield (46.01%) are synthesized from ammonium citrate and betaine hydrochloride by a simple and rapid green route of a one-pot hydrothermal method. The as-prepared NCDs exhibit excellent selectivity and sensitive detection for H+ and Hg2+ (detection limit of 1.69 nM for Hg2+). Finally, the low toxicity and highly photoluminescent NCDs are utilized to detect H+ and Hg2+ in SMMC-7721 cells by a laser scanning confocal microscope.

Abstract:Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) are drawing increasing attention due to their excellent properties, however, CDs usually show excitation-dependent emission property. Herein, we prepared a series of multi-excitation and single color emission carbon dots doped with nitrogen and silicon (SiN-CDs) by one-pot hydrothermal method from a hyperbranched polysiloxane. Interestingly, the synthesized SiN-CDs have three excitation bands at around 240, 300 and 360 nm, and only one emission band at around 440 nm. Meanwhile, SiN-CDs emit single color light in a wide excitation range and different concentrations. Structural and optical property characterizations show that the multi-excitation and single color emission property of SiN-CDs is caused by the cooperation of the sp(2) carbon core with the abundant fluorescent groups on the surface. In particular, SiN-CDs have multiple functions, not only can be internalized into live cells with obvious accumulation in cell nuclei, but also possess high selectivity, sensitivity and anti-interference ability in detecting of Fe3+.
Facile Synthesis of Ratiometric Fluorescent Carbon Dots for Ph Visual Sensing and Cellular Imaging

Abstract:A novel ratiometric emission N, S dual-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs) were facilely developed for pH visual sensing via one-step hydrothermal method. The proposed N, S-CDs displayed intrinsic pH-sensitive behavior and exhibited ratiometric fluorescence emission (F-563 (nm)/F-645 nm) characteristic with the variation of pH values. Interestingly, a significant red shift of emission wavelength can be observed at 645 nm along with the emission at 563 nm decreased accordingly when the pH changed from 3.0 to 1.0. Simultaneously, the fluorescence of N, S-CDs aqueous solution was visually varied from yellow to red. The ratiometric pH linear response was in the region of 3.6 to 2.4 and the pK(a) was 2.90. Moreover, the N, S-CDs hold unique optical properties, good reversibility, superior biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity, which was further employed to monitor the intracellular pH fluctuations through the visible fluorescence changes between yellow and red. All these findings demonstrated that N, S-CDs can be utilized as the visual biosensor platform for tracking pH variations in extremely acidic environments such as gastric juice, which provided novel insights for clinical medical disease diagnosis (e.g., stomach disease detection) and other biomedical fields.
N-Doped Carbon Dots: Green and Efficient Synthesis on a Large-Scale and Their Application in Fluorescent Ph Sensing

Abstract:A green and efficient anhydrous strategy was developed for one-step synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) using sucrose and urea as carbon and nitrogen source, respectively. The reaction was carried out at ambient pressure by directly adding the mixture of sucrose and urea powder into heated edible oil. N-CDs could be generated in several minutes and were obtained by facile separation of the edible oil, which could be reused. This is therefore a green method and suitable for the synthesis of N-CDs on a large-scale. The as synthesized N-CDs possessed higher photostability, excellent optical properties and ultra-low cytotoxicity. Noticeably, the N-CDs exhibited a distinct pH-sensitive feature, and their fluorescent intensity increased linearly in the pH range from 6.75 to 11.0. Therefore, the as synthesized N-CDs can be used to construct pH fluorescent sensor, and the successful pH monitoring of environmental water samples demonstrates their applicability in complex matrixes. Our work would open up a new avenue for the green and convenient synthesis of high-performance heteroatom-doped materials on a large-scale.
One-step synthesis of nitrogen-doped multi-emission carbon dots and their fluorescent sensing in HClO and cellular imaging

Abstract:Tunable multicolor carbon dots (CDs) with a quantum yield reach up to 35% were generated directly from rhodamine and urea via one-step hydrothermal approach and purified through silica gel column chromatography. Transmission electron microscopy images reveal that the as-prepared CDs possess a small size distribution below 10 nm with bright blue, green, and yellow color emission, designated as b-CDs, g-CDs, and y-CDs, respectively. The in-depth investigations reveal that the multicolor emission CDs with different fraction displays fluorescence emission wavelength ranges from 398 nm (b-CDs), 525 nm (g-CDs), to 553 nm (y-CDs) which could be well modulated by controlling the amount of heteroatom nitrogen especially amino nitrogen onto their surface structures. Further experiments verify the important role of nitrogen content by using rhodamine solely or substituting urea with sulfur containing compounds as precursors to produce corresponding CDs since the performance is lower than that of urea incorporation. Theoretical calculation results also reveal that the increasing amount of amino nitrogen into their surface structures of b-CDs, g-CDs to y-CDs is responsible for reduced band gaps energy, which result in the redshifted wavelength. Benefiting from the excellent photoluminescence properties, wide pH variation range, high photo stability, and low toxicity, these CDs were employed for HClO sensing at 553 nm within the range 5 to 140 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.27 ± 0.025 μM (n = 3) and multicolor cellular imaging in HeLa cells.

Abstract:In this work, we designed N and S co-doped carbon dots ( N , S -CDs) with long-wavelength emission and their multifunctional application in pH variation, arginine (Arg) sensing, bioimaging in living cells and zebrafish, and fluorescent materials. The N , S -CDs with excitation wavelength-dependent properties were prepared using neutral red (NR) and dl -methionine (DL-Met) as raw materials by one-pot hydrothermal strategy. The N , S -CDs exhibited a unique pH-sensitive luminescence trait within pH range of 3.2–11.0 and have great linear relationship of 4.8–8.0, which indicating their potential application as an imaging reagent in physiological environments. Arg can quench the PL of N , S -CDs due to static quenching. (SQ). The linear range is 2.5–62.5 μM and the LOD is calculated as 0.68 μM. Furthermore, the as-proposed N , S -CDs can be applied as imaging reagents for monitoring of pH and Arg in vivo and vitro owing to outstanding biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. Interestingly, the N , S -CDs were also used in fluorescent composite films and phosphors owing to exceptional optical properties. All these results indicate that the N , S -CDs have huge potentiality in the areas of fluorescence sensing, bioimaging and fluorescent materials.

Abstract:A novel approach for the preparation of dual-functional carbon dots, i.e., nitrogen- and chloride-doped carbon dots, abbreviated as N/Cl-CDs, is developed with the assistance of a choline chloride-glycerine deep eutectic solvent (DES). The carbon source is provided by urea and the DES serves as a solvent for controlling the preparation of CDs in the absence of water. The dual-element doped carbon dots are oxygen-rich with hydroxyl and amine groups. They exhibit an average particle size of ca. 3.88 nm and give rise to strong and pH-sensitive fluorescent emission at λex/λem = 340/430 nm with a quantum yield of 16.15 ± 1.36%. It is particularly interesting to see that the fluorescence of N/Cl-CDs remains stable in a high-salinity matrix, providing vast potentials for treating real biological sample matrixes with high salinity. The N/Cl-CDs provide an optical probe for intracellular pH sensing and multicolor imaging in HeLa cells. In addition, the N/Cl-CDs show obvious fluorescence response to cytochrome c (cyt- c) with a detection limit of 3.6 mg L-1 (ca. 0.29 μmol L-1) within in a range of 10-500 mg L-1, providing potentials for fluorescence detection of cyt- c as well as facilitating intracellular cyt- c imaging.

Abstract:Optically tunable carbon dots (CDs) were fabricated through a simple one-step microwave-assisted procedure. These carbonaceous nanoparticles exhibited tunable emission under a single wavelength excitation, controllable size without any tedious separation process and stabilities towards photobleaching and high ionic strength. The effects of size difference and surface property on the fluorescence behaviors of CDs were explored through a post-reduction/oxidation method. Experimental results also demonstrated the fluorescence of CDs could be tuned when exposed to H2O2/AcOH solutions. Moreover, the use of as-synthesized CDs as a chemical sensor for the quantification of hypochlorous acid (HClO) has been preliminarily tested, showing high sensitivity and selectivity towards HClO over other common ions. The superior optical properties would enable the use of CDs in multiplexed optical coding of biomolecules, light-emitting devices and biological applications.

Abstract:Two kinds of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were synthesized by choosing citric acid, l-serine and monoethanolamine as the precursors, respectively, in organic solvent N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and deionized water. The FTIR, UV–Vis, HRTEM and XRD were used to characterize the surface molecular structures of these two N-CDs. It was found that different reaction systems made the as-prepared N-CDs possess varied surface states and thus exhibit distinctive photoluminescence features. For the N-CDs prepared in DMF, its fluorescent property showed pH dependent and color-switchable in visible light and could be reversibly changing over in both alkaline and acidic environments due to the protonation and de-protonation of the carboxyl groups on the surface of the N-CDs. Also, its fluorescence intensity exhibited a linear fashion over the pH range from 1.5 to 7.5, indicating its potential applications in pH quantitative detection under acidic condition.

Abstract:Heteroatoms doped carbon dots (CDs) have attracted extensive attention for their superior optical properties, facile preparation and multifunctional applications in environmental detection, cell imaging and gene delivery. Herein, Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) were synthesized directly from methyl cellulose (MC), L-cysteine (L-cys) and ethylenediamine (EDA), showing excitation-dependent emission properties and relative high quantum yield (QY) of 12.3%. The obtained N,S-CDs are responsive to pH and temperature, suggesting pH- and temperature-dependent fluorescent features. Moreover, N,S-CDs are utilized to image and exhibit selective location inside the nucleus region both in living and fixed cells. Relative mechanisms have been explored by ribonuclease digestion testing and co-staining analysis with commercial nucleic acid dye. N,S-CDs show the specifical distribution in RNA-rich regions and positive response to RNA in cells. In brief, the developed N,S-CDs possess multi-faced application potency in pH sensing, temperature monitoring and RNA-selective imaging in cells.

Abstract:The dual-emissive N, S co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs) with a long emission wavelength were synthesized via solvothermal method. The N, S-CDs possess relatively high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) (35.7%) towards near-infrared fluorescent peak up to 648 nm. With the advanced characterization techniques including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), etc. It is found that the doped N, S elements play an important role in the formation of high QY CDs. The N, S-CDs exist distinct pH-sensitive feature with reversible fluorescence in a good linear relationship with pH values in the range of 1.0–13.0. What is more, N, S-CDs can be used as an ultrasensitive Ag + probe sensor with the resolution up to 0.4 μM. This finding will expand the application of as prepared N, S-CDs in sensing and environmental fields.

Abstract:It is still a great challenge to synthesize carbohydrate-derived carbon dots (CDs) with long-wavelength emissions via a green and facile strategy. Herein, novel xylose-derived CDs with green-yellow emission (i.e., GY-CDs) were synthesized due to the doping effect of S and N elements, using a one-pot microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The maximum emission located at 533 nm under 460 nm excitation, and the absolute quantum yield was as high as 42.44%. To unveil the emission mechanism, green and blue emissive xylose-derived CDs doped with N were also synthesized, respectively. Comparative study and various structural characterizations revealed that introducing protonated amino groups and sulfur-related moieties can narrow the energy gaps within surface states and contribute to the green-yellow emission. Further, the GY-CDs not only displayed transmutation of luminescent centers when the solution pH was above 6, but also exhibited ratiometric fluorescence changes in the pH range of 6–10 under 360 and 460 nm excitation, such distinctive dual-mode response, which together with excellent anti-interference, good water solubility, and outstanding photostability enables the prepared GY-CDs to be potential pH nanosensors.

Abstract:A fast and facile approach to synthesize orange luminescent carbon dots by hydrothermal method, while 1,2-benzenediamine and carbamaldehyde serve as precursors. In order to get stronger fluorescence emission, doping N heteroatoms to make N-CDs. The N-CDs exhibit a high quantum yield of 14.3% along with the fluorescence lifetime of 2.86 ns. Because the emission of N-CDs is quenched by Ag+ efficiently, N-CDs can be employed as a highly sensitive and selective detection for Ag+ detection and N-CDs were exploited for the determination of Ag+ in environmental water samples with satisfactory results. Significantly, using MTT assay, N-CDs have low toxicity against 293 T cells and N-CDs have been applied for A549 cell imaging successfully.

Abstract:Carbon dots with dual emission have drown increasing attention in biology and medicine due to their fascinating optical and biological properties. Herein, dual emissive nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-doped CDs) are synthesized by simple annealing of ammonium citrate in the air via solvent-free carbonization. Interestingly, N-doped CDs display dual emission peaking at 462 nm and 560 nm under excitation of 360 nm and 470 nm, respectively. The dual PL emission spectra of the N-doped CDs illustrate that each emission is associated with the single excitation band. The data reveals that two autonomous fluorescent centres are co-existed in N-doped CDs because doping with nitrogen (N) could change the surface chemistry of the CDs. In addition, dual emissive N-doped CDs have significantly low toxicity and could be applied as multicolor cell imaging using T-ca cancer cells. Moreover, obtained N-doped CDs are sensitive to temperature in the range of 15–90 °C and show potential to detect temperature in living cells. Furthermore, low toxicity and high biocompatibility proved that the obtained N-doped CDs could be applied in vivo imaging. Besides, the dual emissive N-doped CDs have the ability to probe Fe3+ ions in water as well as in living T-ca cells.

Abstract:In this research, a nitrogen- (N) and sulfur- (S) codoped carbon dot (CDs-IPM)-based sensor was synthesized using a single-step hydrothermal method. Specifically, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was the main raw material, which was extracted from banana pseudo-stem-based waste, while autonomous sulfonic acid-functionalized ionic liquid (SO3H-IL) and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400) acted as the N, S dopant, and surface modifier, respectively. Comprehensive spectroscopic characterization of the synthesized CDs-IPM revealed the introduction of S, N atoms in the matrix with existence of surface oxygenic functional groups. The CDs-IPM possessed enhanced photoluminescence (PL) intensity, synthetic yield, and PL quantum yield (PLQY). Additionally, electron transfer between the CDs-IPM, hexavalent chromium (Cr(vi)), and subsequent ascorbic acid (AA) succeeded in turning the fluorescence on and off. The detection limit was 17 nM for Cr(vi), while it was 103 nM for AA. Our study data can simplify the process of synthesis of CDs utilizing biodegradable starting materials. The probe reported in this study may serve as a valuable addition to the field of environment monitoring by virtue of its enhanced detection sensitivity, high selectivity, and stability.
Colorimetric and fluorescence dual-mode pH sensor based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots and its diverse applications

Abstract:A dual-mode pH sensor based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with the source of o-phenylenediamine and tryptophan has been constructed. Under the stimulation of pH, the N-CDs exhibited prominent both color and fluorescence changes, leading to the rarely discovered colorimetric and fluorescent dual-readouts for the evaluation of pH. The mathematic relationship was established between pH and fluorescence intensity of N-CDs, and between pH and the UV-Vis absorbance ratio at 630 nm and 488 nm of N-CDs, respectively, over a quite broad pH range of 2.2 to 12.0. Multiple techniques are used to explore the dual-mode pH-responsive mechanism, and the preliminary explanation is put forward. The experimental results show that the N-CDs have visualized pH sensing applicability for actual samples, including various water samples and HeLa cell. Furthermore, the N-CD ink is developed for successful information encryption and anti-counterfeiting. This work might provide valuable insights into the sensing mechanism of CDs, and the application potential of CDs in broader fields.

Abstract:Nitrogen and chlorine co-doped fluorescent carbon nanodots (CDs) were prepared using a facile and eco-friendly solvothermal process in which N-Chlorosuccinimide(NCS) was used as a carbon source. The resulting CDs were characterized by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It shows emission of blue light at 410 nm when excited at 340 nm. High quantum yield of 21.7% and good biocompatibility were also observed. Importantly, the fluorescence intensity of CDs was selectively quenched after addition of Ag+. Based upon the aforementioned phenomenon, a new fluorescent biosensor for the detection of Ag+ was proposed. The linear range and detection limit was 5-70 mu M and 1.06 mu M, respectively. Eventually, these superior properties demonstrated that the CDs have promising applications in the field of environmental and biomedicine research.

Abstract:In this paper, multifunctional nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were synthesized from 3,5-diaminobenzonitrile by a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The N-CDs have a high quantum yield of 67.0% in ethanol with great water solubility, temperature stability, light stability and resistance to ion interference. Experiments showed that pH has an effect on the fluorescence intensity and emission wavelength of N-CDs. Especially, the switchable fluorescence of N-CDs caused by changes of pH value could be distinguished to the naked eye. Additionally, the multifunctional N-CDs also showed a selective response to tetracycline. We studied the influence of tetracycline on the luminescence intensity of N-CDs in the concentration range of 0–1000[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/L. A linear equation was established in the range of 10–80[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/L with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.5[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]g/L. Based on the above excellent characteristics, N-CDs are expected to be applied in the field of sensing.

Abstract:Developing a simple synthesis method and expanding the application of carbon dots have attracted increasing attention. In this report, we have developed a facile method to synthesize fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) with the assistance of atmospheric-pressure microplasma. The CDs could be produced within a few minutes with no need of high temperature, external energy input, and multistep procedures. The as-prepared CDs had a relatively uniform size of approximately 2.3 nm. The FTIR spectrum and the XPS analysis showed that carbonyl groups and amide groups exist on the surface of CDs. The CDs showed bright blue luminescence and high stability in high salt concentration and low pH without further modification. A pH-dependent PL behavior was observed and could be applied for pH sensing in the range of 3-14. Moreover, the CDs could be utilized as a reagent capable of detecting U(vi) with a low detection limit and high selectivity.
