Abstract:Micrometer-sized ZnO with various shapes have been synthesized by a hydrothermal route with Zn(Ac)2/NH3·H2O in the presence of copper ions. Powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were utilized to characterize the composition and structure of the samples, respectively. As-synthesized, the ultrasonic pretreatment, pH value, reaction time and hydrothermal temperature played important roles in crystal structure tailoring. Novel nut-like ZnO crystal with improved crystal quality was obtained with initial Zn2+/Cu2+ ratio of 10, at reaction temperature of 100°C, with initial pH of 7.0 and in a reaction time of 4h, with ultrasonic pretreatment. Time-dependent experiments show that transfer of the Cu ions plays a crucial role as it causes the difference in crystal growth velocity.

Abstract:Catalyst design plays vital roles in structurally relevant reactions. Revealing the catalyst structure and chemistry in the reactive environment at the atomic scale is imperative for the rational design of catalysts as well as the investigation of reaction mechanisms, while in situ characterization at the atomic scale at high temperature is still a great challenge. Here, tracking intermetallic Co7W6 nanocrystals with a defined structure and a high melting point by environmental aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy in combination with in situ synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we directly present the structural and chemical stability of the Co7W6 nanocrystals in methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen at temperatures of 700-1100 °C. The evidence is in situ and in real time with both atomic scaled resolution and collective information. The results are helpful in revealing the mechanism of structural-specified synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes. This research offers an example of systematic investigation at the atomic scale on catalysts under reactive conditions. Such catalysts presenting high structural stability may also find applications in other structure-specific synthesis.
A Molecular Dynamics Study on Mechanical Performance and Deformation Mechanisms in Nanotwinned NiCo-based Alloys with Nano-Precipitates under High Temperatures

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the mechanical behavior of nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys containing coherent L12 nano-precipitates at different temperatures, as well as the interactions between the dislocations and nano-precipitates within the nanotwins. The simulation results demonstrate that both the yield stress and flow stress in the nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys with nano-precipitates decrease as the temperature rises, because the higher temperatures lead to the generation of more defects during yielding and lower dislocation density during plastic deformation. Moreover, the coherent L12 phase exhibits excellent thermal stability, which enables the hinderance of dislocation motion at elevated temperatures via the wrapping and cutting mechanisms of dislocations. The synergistic effect of nanotwins and nano-precipitates results in more significant strengthening behavior in the nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys under high temperatures. In addition, the high-temperature mechanical behavior of nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys with nano-precipitates is sensitive to the size and volume fraction of the microstructures. These findings could be helpful for the design of nanotwins and nano-precipitates to improve the high-temperature mechanical properties of NiCo-based alloys.
Size and Temperature Dependent Shapes of Copper Nanocrystals using Parallel Tempering Molecular Dynamics

Abstract:We performed parallel-tempering molecular dynamics simulations to predict the temperature- and size-dependent equilibrium shapes of a series of Cu nanocrystals in the 100- to 200-atom size range. Our study indicates that temperature-dependent, solid-solid shape transitions occur frequently for Cu nanocrystals in this size range. Complementary calculations with electronic density functional theory indicate that vibrational entropy favors nanocrystals with a shape intermediate between a decahedron and an icosahedron. Overall, we find that entropy plays a significant role in determining the shapes Cu nanocrystals, so studies aimed at determining minimum-energy shapes may fail to correctly predict shapes observed at experimental temperatures. We also observe significant shape changes with nanocrystal size – sometimes with changes in a single atom. The information from this study could be useful in efforts to devise processing routes to achieve selective nanocrystal shapes.

Abstract:Cu2O microcrystals with various shapes were obtained by reducing copper nitrate with formic acid, employing NH3 center dot H2O as the morphology tailor. The volume of NH3 center dot H2O plays a key role in controlling the final morphology, and hence Cu2O with various shapes, such as sphere, hexapod, octahedron, truncated octahedron and rhombic dodecahedron can be obtained by varying the concentration of NH3 center dot H2O in the solution. Time-dependent experiments strongly showed that all the microcrystals originated from the intermediate octahedron microcrystal. We found that the intermediate octahedron microcrystal evolved directly from a microsphere. The growth of the microsphere could be divided into two steps: nanoparticles isokinetically aggregated quickly to produce a submicrometer-sphere, and then a microsphere formed by mass transportation. The shape evolution of the microcrystal in the present reaction system is quite meaningful to the growth process of the Cu2O microcrystal.
Room-temperature superionic-phase nanocrystals synthesized with a twinned lattice

Abstract:The engineering of nanoscale features enables the properties of solid-state materials to be tuned. Here, we show the tunable preparation of cuprous sulfide nanocrystals ranging in internal structures from single-domain to multi-domain. The synthetic method utilizes in-situ oxidation to grow nanocrystals with a controlled degree of copper deficiency. Copper-deficient nanocrystals spontaneously undergo twinning to a multi-domain structure. Nanocrystals with twinned domains exhibit markedly altered crystallographic phase and phase transition characteristics as compared to single-domain nanocrystals. In the presence of twin boundaries, the temperature for transition from the ordered phase to the high-copper-mobility superionic phase is depressed. Whereas the superionic phase is stable in the bulk only above ca. 100 °C, cuprous sulfide nanocrystals of ca. 7 nm diameter and a twinned structure are stable in the superionic phase well below ambient temperature. These findings demonstrate twinning to be a structural handle for nanoscale materials design and enable applications for an earth-abundant mineral in solid electrolytes for Li-S batteries.

Abstract:The nano-sized Cu particles have been prepared by a mechanochemical reaction. The structure of Cu particle has been investigated by means of X-ray diffraction(XRD), transmission electron microscope(TEM) and differential thermal analysis(DTA). The results showed that the Cu particle is around 20 nm in size, and it is so chemically active that Cu2O is formed in the surface of the particle. The nano-sized Cu particles agglomerate if the temperature increases beyond 400 degrees C. In addition, the formation mechanism of nanosized Cu particles was discussed.

Abstract:In this study, large-scale synthesis of Cu3SbSe4 and Cu3Sb0.98Sn0.02Se4 nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution was achieved through a rapid-injection route. These nanoparticles showed a monodisperse and quasi-spherical morphology. The Cu3SbSe4 and Cu3Sb0.98Sn0.02Se4 nanoparticle-based bulk materials were then prepared by hot-pressed sinter of the nanoparticles, and their thermoelectric performances were systematically studied. Due to the reduced lattice thermal conductivity from enhanced phonon scattering at the grain interfaces of the bulk materials, the maximum ZT value of the Cu3Sb0.98Sn0.02Se4 bulk materials reached 0.50 at 575 K.

Abstract:Nanometer copper ferrite, as a kind of nanometer particle with catalytic activity, and its photothermal and magnetothermal effects as ferrite, can be widely used in different fields. It is a general way to obtain the nano effect of the target by controlling the particle size. In this paper, the crystallization process of hydrothermal/solvothermal synthesis was analyzed, and the nucleation model was established to simulate the effects of solvent, reaction temperature and cooling time on the particle size of copper ferrite nanoparticles. Through Monte Carlo method and energy function, the ratio of nano particle agglomeration was established, and the influence of different reaction conditions on it was discussed.

Abstract:A novel type of high symmetric 26-facet polyhedral microcrystals of Cu2O with well-developed {100}, {110}, {111} crystallographic faces are successfully synthesized in a properly selected reaction medium. These polyhedra exhibit a core-shell structure. An aqueous solution containing CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O, sodium citrate (C6H5Na3O7 center dot 2H(2)O) complexing agent, glucose reductant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant, NaOH, and ethylene glycol (EG) constitutes the functional medium. By altering the EG to the water volume ratio, polyhedral, quasi-cubic, octahedral microcrystals are obtained directly. SDS, EG and C6H5Na3O7 center dot 2H(2)O have been confirmed to be the necessary additives to the development of different crystallographic planes. A possible growth mechanism involving aggregation of seed particles, oriented attachment, ripening process and surface reconstruction is proposed on the grounds of time-dependent experiments. The photocatalytic properties of the polyhedral microcrystals are also investigated.

Abstract:The componential and morphological evolution of uniform Cu2O nanocrystals with different shapes in aqueous ammonia solutions has been comprehensively studied by means of X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscopy. Cubic, octahedral, and rhombic dodecahedral Cu2O nanocrystals that, respectively, expose Cu2O {100}, {111}, and {110} crystal planes exhibit distinctly different reaction behaviors. The stability of various types of uniform Cu2O nanocrystals in the aqueous ammonia solution follows the order cubic Cu2O nanocrystals > octahedral Cu2O nanocrystals > rhombic dodecahedral Cu2O nanocrystals. The nucleation and growth of Cu(OH)2 and CuO precipitate also depend on the shape of Cu2O nanocrystals. Abstract:Copper oxide (CuO) is an important transition metal oxide used in a wide variety of applications, such as gas sensors, magnetic storage media, lithium-ion electrodes, electronic device fabrication etc. CuO nanostructures (NS) exhibit exclusive properties considerably different from their bulk counterparts, such as highly reactive surfaces, different optical, electrical and catalytic properties which strongly depend on the shape, size and crystal structure of the NS. By altering the aspect ratio (length to diameter ratio) and shape of CuO NS, physical and chemical properties of these NS can be tailored. In this work, an array of CuO NS was synthesized on thin copper foil substrate through wet chemical route at different temperatures and times, followed by a thermal reduction in an Ar/H 2 atmosphere. Cu foil itself was polished to different roughness levels and deformed to different thickness levels, prior to the reaction, to induce different growth conditions leading to the formation of CuO NS of different morphologies. The present study shows simple, scalable technique to synthesize various CuO NS that can be helpful in future to ameliorate various physical and chemical properties of CuO.

Influence of Deposition Temperature on Growth Process and Opto-electronic Performance of Cu2O Thin Films

Abstract:The nanocrystallite cuprous oxide (Cu2O) thin films with tunable crystallite size were prepared by a one-step chemical bath deposition (CBD) method, where copper sulfate was used as the copper precursor. The influence of deposition temperature on structure, crystallite size, nucleation site density, film thickness and opto-electronic properties of the thin films was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results reveal that the crystallite size, film thickness and band gap of Cu2O thin films vary in the range of 33 similar to 51 nm, 392 556 nm and 2.47 similar to 2.61 eV, respectively, with the deposition temperature change in the range of 60 similar to 90 degrees C. In addition, the absorption edges of UV-Vis transmittance spectra are blue-shifted apparently with the decrease in crystallite size. Meanwhile, the growth process and the mechanism for the varied nucleation site density and particle size of Cu2O thin films were also discussed.

Abstract:Monodisperse Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) nanocrystals with tunable shape, crystalline phase, and composition are synthesized by efficient thermolysis of a single source precursor of mixed metal-oleate complexes in hot organic solvents with dissolved sulfur sources. Suitable tuning of the synthetic conditions and the Cu/(Zn + Sn) ratio of the precursor has enabled precise control of the crystalline phase in the form of kesterite, or a newly observed wurtzite structure. Nanocrystals with morphology in the form of spherical, rice-like, or rod-like shapes are obtained over a wide range of compositions (0.5 <= Cu/(Zn + Sn) <= 1.2). Both the final products and intermediates for each shape exhibit consistent composition and structure, indicating homogenous nucleation and growth of single-phase nanocrystals. Thin films prepared from colloidal nanocrystal suspensions display interesting shape-dependent photoresponse behavior under white light illumination from a solar simulator.
Size Effect on Crystal Morphology of Faceted Face-Centered Cubic Fe Nanoparticles

Abstract:Faceted metal nanoparticles have attracted much attention owing to their size and shape enhanced unique physical and chemical properties. Here we successfully synthesized face-centered cubic (fcc) Fe nanoparticles with diverse morphologies including icosahedron, decahedron, 5-fold twinned nanorod, tetrahedron and cube. A size effect on the particle morphologies of these faceted fcc-Fe nanoparticles was revealed. Small sizes (5-13 nm) favor icosahedral nanoparticles; decahedron and 5-fold twinned nanorods are favored at intermediate sizes (12-164 nm), and triangular plate and cube at large sizes such as 200 nm. This size-morphology dependence correlation of faceted fcc-Fe nanoparticles can be well explained by thermodynamic calculations.

Abstract:Ultrathin InOOH nanowires with a diameter of approximately 2 nm and a length up to approximately 200 nm have been synthesized by a hydrolysis reaction in a solution system. Their transformations to c-In(2)O(3) nanocrystals and rh-In(2)O(3) nanowires have been investigated. A dissolution-recrystallization (in solution) or size-related decomposition-recrystallization (in air) mechanism is indicated for the former transformation; the size- and surface-determined transformation is proposed for the latter. These results will help to understand and control the phase stability and transformation concerning the nanodimension and surface restrictions, especially for ultrathin nanowires.

Abstract:The flower-like Cu 2 O nanostructures were hydrothermally synthesized without using any template or surfactant. The influences of hydrothermal temperature, reaction time and reactants concentrations on the growth of nanostructures were investigated in detail. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Cu 2 O crystals with different shapes, i.e., flower-like (F-product) cubic box (CB-product) and cubic box with holes in each face (CBH-product), were synthesized by controlling the synthesis parameters and explored for CO catalytic oxidation. It was found that F-product showed higher catalytic than others.
Investigation of the Crystallographic Evolution Sequence of Nano-Precipitation via HRTEM in Cu-Bearing Ultra-Low Carbon Steel

Abstract:The precipitation behavior of Cu-bearing ultra-low carbon steel after step quenching and tempering at 923 K for 0.5-2.5 h was investigated. The size, quantity, and characteristic distribution of nano-precipitates were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, and the microstructure of B2 (an ordered structure belonging to the body-centered cubic structure), 9R (a special triclinic lattice that has characteristics of rhombohedral structure), 3R (a special triclinic lattice like 9R), and FCT (face-centered tetragonal lattices) were accurately determined. The relationship between nano-precipitates and mechanical properties under different heat treatment processes was obtained, revealing that nano-precipitates effectively enhanced the yield strength of Cu-bearing ultra-low carbon steel. There were two forms of crystal structure evolution sequence of precipitation: B2→multi twin 9R→detwined 9R→FCT→FCC and B2→multi-twin 9R→detwinned 9R→3R→FCT→FCC. The morphology of the precipitated particles during the growth process changed from spherical to ellipsoidal and finally to rod-shaped. It was proven that a stable 3R structure existed due to the coexistence of 9R, 3R, and FCT structures in the same precipitate particle.

Abstract:Zinc oxide nanoparticles were synthesized using sol–gel and hydrothermal techniques and characterized at different calcination temperatures (400, 500, and 600 °C). The study included an analysis of morphology, crystalline phase, particle size, elemental analysis, specific surface area and chemical state. Various characterization methods were employed, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), surface analysis (BET), nitrogen absorption and desorption (N 2 -desorption), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis (TGA-DSC), temperature-programmed reduction of hydrogen (H 2 -TPR). Additionally, magnetic properties ZnO nanoparticles were investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR). The investigation revealed changes in reduction behavior, electron spin states, and magnetic properties. The interplay between defects, crystallization, and stability underscores the complexity of ZnO-NPs. These findings contribute to our understanding of nanomaterials and their potential applications in various fields. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations with a Hubbard U correction were performed to investigate native defects in ZnO and ZnOCH structures under oxygen-poor (low temperature), oxygen-rich (high temperature) and equilibrium (average temperature) conditions. The formation energies of native defects were calculated, and ESR spectra were simulated to analyze the presence and absence of CO, C–O, CH, and OH bands, as well as to identify the native defects present during growth. The results of the formation energy calculations and the simulated ESR spectra showed that the growth environment influences the native defects that occur during the ZnO preparation process. Inconsistencies between the calculation of formation energy and the ESR spectra suggested that the CO, C–O, CH, and OH bands were negligible and could be disregarded in the ZnO nanoparticles. The findings from this study contribute to a deeper understanding of ZnO-NPs, enabling the optimization of their properties for specific applications, such as effective catalysts in chemical reactions.
