Abstract:We are concerned with the existence and multiplicity of nontrivial time periodic viscosity solutions to partial differential tw(x, t) + H(x, partial differential xw(x, t), w(x, t)) = 0, (x, t) E S x [0, +oo), where S is the unit circle and H = H(x, p, u) satisfies Tonelli conditions with respect to the argument p and is strictly decreasing in the argument u. We also study the long time behavior of viscosity solutions of the Cauchy problem for the above contact Hamilton-Jacobi equation. It is shown that for a class of initial data the corresponding viscosity solutions converge to asymptotic time periodic viscosity solutions. As an application of the existence result we analyze a bifurcation phenomenon for partial differential tw(x, t) + H(x, partial differential xw(x, t), lambda w(x, t)) = 0 where lambda is a parameter.(c) 2023 Elsevier Masson SAS. Abstract:Assume H = H(x, p, u) with (x, p) is an element of T*M and u is an element of S, is smooth and satisfies Tonelli conditions in p, Lipschitz continuity condition in u, where M is a compact connected smooth manifold without boundary. We find a compact interval C such that equationH(x, partial differential xu(x), u(x)) = chas solutions if and only if c is an element of C. We also study the long-time behavior of the unique viscosity solution uc of partial differential tu(x, t) + H(x, partial differential xu(x, t), u(x, t)) = c, u(x, 0) = phi(x) is an element of C(M, R).If c is an element of C, uc is bounded by a constant independent of c and Lipschitz with respect to the argument x with a Lipschitz constant independent of c and phi. If c is an element of/ C, then the long-time average of uc can be characterized by a function c 7 -> rho(c) which admits a modulus of continuity. We obtain these results by analyzing properties of a kind of one-parameter semigroups of operators. All the aforementioned results show the fundamental difference between Hamilton Jacobi equations with Hamiltonians H(x, p, u) and over line H(x, p).
Viscosity solutions of contact Hamilton-Jacobi equations without monotonicity assumptions

Abstract:This paper deals with: (1) the generalized additive eigenvalue problem \[ H(x,u(x),Du(x))=c, \quad x\in M, \] where the unknown is a pair $(c,u)$ of a constant $c \in \mathbb{R}$ and a function $u$ on $M$ for which $u$ is a backward weak KAM solution (or equivalently, viscosity solution) of the above equation; (2) the long-time behavior of viscosity solutions of the Cauchy problem for \[ w_{t}(x,t)+H(x, w(x,t), Dw(x,t))=c,\quad (x,t)\in M\times(0,+\infty). \] We assume $H=H(x,u,p)$ satisfies Tonelli conditions in the argument $p\in T^*_xM$ and the uniform Lipschitz condition in the argument $u\in\mathbb{R}$. First, we provide three necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of backward weak KAM solutions of the stationary equation for a given $c\in \mathbb{R}$. Second, we analyse the structure of the set $\mathfrak{C}$ of all real numbers $c$'s for which the stationary equation admits backward weak KAM solutions. Third, the long-time behavior of viscosity solutions of the Cauchy problem for the evolutionary equation is studied. Implicit Lax-Oleinik semigroups $\{T^\pm_t\}_{t\geqslant 0}$ play an essential role in this paper. The most important novelty in this work is to reveal several new aspects of existence and long-time behavior of viscosity solutions of the above equations without monotonicity assumptions $\frac{\partial H}{\partial u}\geqslant 0$ (or, $\frac{\partial H}{\partial u}\leqslant 0$): the propeties of the operator $T^+_t\circ T^-_t$ is used to provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of viscosity solutions of the stationary equation; three constants are introduced to analyse the structure of $\mathfrak{C}$; the information of $w$ in finite time partly determines the long-time behavior of $w$.

Abstract:First, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition of the existence of viscosity solutions of the nonlinear first order PDEF(x,u,Du)=0,x∈M, under which we prove the compactness of the set of all viscosity solutions. Here, F(x,u,p) satisfies Tonelli conditions with respect to the argument p and −λ≤∂F∂u<0 for some λ>0, and M is a compact manifold without boundary. Second, we study the long time behavior of viscosity solutions of the Cauchy problem forwt+F(x,w,wx)=0,(x,t)∈M×(0,+∞), from the weak KAM point of view. The dynamical methods developed in [13], [14], [15] play an essential role in this paper.

Abstract:Let M be a closed and smooth manifold and H-epsilon : T* M -> R-1 be a family of Tonelli Hamiltonians for epsilon >= 0 small. For each phi is an element of C(M, R-1), T-t(epsilon)phi(x) is the unique viscosity solution of the Cauchy problem{d(t)w + H-epsilon(x, d(x)w) = 0, in M x (0, +infinity),w vertical bar(t=0) = phi, on M,where T-t(epsilon) is the Lax-Oleinik operator associated with H-epsilon. A result of Fathi asserts that the uniform limit, for t -> +infinity, of T-t(epsilon)phi + c(epsilon)t exists and the limit (phi) over bar (epsilon) is a viscosity solution of the stationary Hamilton-Jacobi equationH-epsilon (x, d(x)u) = c(epsilon),where c(epsilon) is the unique k for which the equation H-epsilon (x, d(x)u) = k admits viscosity solutions. In the present paper we discuss the continuous dependence of the viscosity solution (phi) over bar (epsilon) with respect to the parameter epsilon.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the following Hamilton-Jacobi equation with initial condition: ∂_tu(x,t)+H(x,t,u(x,t),∂_xu(x,t))=0, u(x,0)=ϕ(x). Under some assumptions on the convexity of H(x,t,u,p) w.r.t. p, we develop a dynamical approach to viscosity solutions and show that there exists an intrinsic connection between viscosity solutions and certain minimal characteristics.

Abstract:For any compact connected manifold M, we consider the generalized contact Hamiltonian H(x, p, u) defined on $$T^*M\times \mathbb {R}$$ which is convex in p and monotonically increasing in u. Let $$u_\varepsilon ^-:M\rightarrow \mathbb {R}$$ be the viscosity solution of the parametrized contact Hamilton–Jacobi equation $$\begin{aligned} H(x,d_x u_\varepsilon ^-(x),\varepsilon u_\varepsilon ^-(x))=c(H), \end{aligned}$$ with c(H) being the Mañé Critical Value. We prove that $$u_\varepsilon ^-$$ converges uniformly, as $$\varepsilon \rightarrow 0_+$$ , to a specific viscosity solution $$u_0^-$$ of the critical equation $$\begin{aligned} H(x,d_x u_0^-(x),0)=c(H), \end{aligned}$$ which can be characterized as a minimal combination of the associated Peierls barrier functions.
Convergence/divergence phenomena in the vanishing discount limit of Hamilton-Jacobi equations

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions of an equation of the form \begin{equation}\label{abs}\tag{*} G\big(x, D_x u,\lambda u(x)\big) = c_0\qquad\hbox{in $M$} \end{equation} on a closed Riemannian manifold $M$, where $G\in C(T^*M\times\mathbb{R})$ is convex and superlinear in the gradient variable, is globally Lipschitz but not monotone in the last argument, and $c_0$ is the critical constant associated with the Hamiltonian $H:=G(\cdot,\cdot,0)$. By assuming that $\partial_u G(\cdot,\cdot,0)$ satisfies a positivity condition of integral type on the Mather set of $H$, we prove that any equi-bounded family of solutions of \eqref{abs} uniformly converges to a distinguished critical solution $u_0$ as $\lambda \to 0^+$. We furthermore show that any other possible family of solutions uniformly diverges to $+\infty$ or $-\infty$. We then look into the linear case $G(x,p,u):=a(x)u + H(x,p)$ and prove that the family $(u_\lambda)_{\lambda \in (0,\lambda_0)}$ of maximal solutions to \eqref{abs} is well defined and equi-bounded for $\lambda_0>0$ small enough. When $a$ changes sign and enjoys a stronger localized positivity assumption, we show that equation \eqref{abs} does admit other solutions too, and that they all uniformly diverge to $-\infty$ as $\lambda \to 0^+$. This is the first time that converging and diverging families of solutions are shown to coexist in such a generality.

Abstract:For a continuous Hamiltonian $H : (x, p, u) \in T^*\mathbb{R}^n \times \mathbb{R}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$, we consider the asymptotic behavior of associated Hamilton--Jacobi equations with state-constraint $H(x, Du, \lambda u) \leq C_\lambda$ in $\Omega_\lambda\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ and $H(x, Du, \lambda u) \geq C_\lambda$ on $\overline{\Omega}_\lambda\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ a $\lambda\rightarrow 0^+$. When $H$ satisfies certain convex, coercive, and monotone conditions, the domain $\Omega_\lambda:=(1+r(\lambda))\Omega$ keeps bounded, star-shaped for all $\lambda>0$ with $\lim_{\lambda\rightarrow 0^+}r(\lambda)=0$, and $\lim_{\lambda\rightarrow 0^+}C_\lambda=c(H)$ equals the ergodic constant of $H(\cdot,\cdot,0)$, we prove the convergence of solutions $u_\lambda$ to a specific solution of the critical equation $H(x, Du, 0)\leq c(H) $ in $\Omega$ and $H(x, Du, 0)\geq c(H) $ on $\overline{\Omega}$. We also discuss the generalization of such a convergence for equations with more general $C_\lambda$ and $\Omega_\lambda$.

Abstract:Abstract We study the Hamilton–Jacobi equations in M and in where the Hamiltonian depends Lipschitz continuously on the variable u. In the framework of the semicontinuous viscosity solutions due to Barron–Jensen, we establish the comparison principle, existence theorem, and representation formula as value functions for extended real-valued, lower semicontinuous solutions for the Cauchy problem. We also establish some results on the long-time behavior of solutions for the Cauchy problem and classification of solutions for the stationary problem.

Abstract:In this article we develop an analogue of Aubry-Mather theory for time periodic dissipative equation {(x) over dot = partial derivative H-p(x, p, t), (p) over dot = -partial derivative(x) H(x, p, t) - f (t) p with (x, p, t) epsilon T* M xT (compact manifold M without boundary). We discuss the asymptotic behaviors of viscosity solutions for the associated Hamilton-Jacobi equation partial derivative(t)u + f (t)u + H(x, partial derivative(x)u, t) = 0, (x, t) epsilon M x T w.r.t. certain parameters, and analyze the meanings in controlling the global dynamics. We also discuss the prospect of applying our conclusions to many physical models.

Abstract:We consider a weakly coupled system of discounted Hamilton--Jacobi equations set on a closed Riemannian manifold. We prove that the corresponding solutions converge to a specific solution of the limit system as the discount factor goes to zero. The analysis is based on a generalization of the theory of Mather minimizing measures for Hamilton--Jacobi systems and on suitable random representation formulae for the discounted solutions.

For a C^2 generic (in the sense of Mañé) Tonelli Hamiltonian H: T^*M→ℝ , the minimal viscosity solution u_λ ^-:M→ℝ of the negative discounted equation -λ u+H(x,d_xu)=c(H), x∈ M, λ >0 with the Mañé’s critical value c(H) converges to a uniquely established viscosity solution u_0^- of the critical Hamilton–Jacobi equation H(x,d_x u)=c(H), x∈ M as λ→ 0_+ . Abstract:We consider the evolutionary Hamilton-Jacobi equation depending on the unknown function with the continuous initial condition on a connected closed manifold. Under certain assumptions on $H(x,u,p)$ with respect to $u$ and $p$, we provide an implicit variational principle. By introducing an implicitly defined solution semigroup and an admissible value set $\mathcal{C}_H$, we extend weak KAM theory to certain more general cases, in which $H$ depends on the unknown function $u$ explicitly. As an application, we show that for $0\notin \mathcal{C}_H$, as $t\rightarrow +\infty$, the viscosity solution of \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \partial_tu(x,t)+H(x,u(x,t),\partial_xu(x,t))=0,\\ u(x,0)=\varphi(x), \end{cases} \end{equation*} diverges, otherwise for $0\in \mathcal{C}_H$, it converges to a weak KAM solution of the stationary Hamilton-Jacobi equation \begin{equation*} H(x,u(x),\partial_xu(x))=0. \end{equation*}

Abstract:We consider the following diffusion system: {∂tu−△xu+b(t,x)∇xu+V(x)u=Hv(t,x,u,v),−∂tv−△xv+b(t,x)∇xv+V(x)v=Hu(t,x,u,v)∀(t,x)∈R×RN, which is an unbounded Hamiltonian system in L2(R×RN,R2m), z:=(u,v):R×RN→Rm×Rm, b∈C(R×RN,RN), V∈C(RN,R) and H∈C1(R×RN×R2m,R). Suppose that H,b and V depend periodically on t and x, and that H(t,x,z) is superquadratic in z as |z|→∞. Without a symmetry assumption on H, we establish the existence of infinitely many geometrically distinct solutions via a variational approach.
Optimal rate of convergence in periodic homogenization of viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations

Abstract:We study the optimal rate of convergence in periodic homogenization of the viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation $u^\varepsilon_t + H(\frac{x}{\varepsilon},Du^\varepsilon) = \varepsilon \Delta u^\varepsilon$ in $\mathbb R^n\times (0,\infty)$ subject to a given initial datum. We prove that $\|u^\varepsilon-u\|_{L^\infty(\mathbb R^n \times [0,T])} \leq C(1+T) \sqrt{\varepsilon}$ for any given $T>0$, where $u$ is the viscosity solution of the effective problem. Moreover, we show that the $O(\sqrt{\varepsilon})$ rate is optimal for a natural class of $H$ and a Lipschitz continuous initial datum, both theoretically and through numerical experiments. It remains an interesting question to investigate whether the convergence rate can be improved when $H$ is uniformly convex. Finally, we propose a numerical scheme for the approximation of the effective Hamiltonian based on a finite element approximation of approximate corrector problems.
