Abstract:We report a simple technique for the realization of fiber-based Fabry-Pérot microcavities with large Q/V values as well as high cavity-to-fiber coupling efficiencies. The open microcavity we demonstrate consists of a flat mirror and a concave mirror on the tip of a single mode optical fiber. Combining hydrofluoric acid chemical wet etching with CO2 laser reflow, we obtain a fiber-tip atomically smooth concave surface with a diameter of 4.7 μm determined by the fiber core size. The concave surface with a spherical profile is automatically aligned with the fiber core, which enables high cavity-to-fiber power coupling efficiency (higher than 90%) with an optimal fiber-tip mirror's radius of curvature based on numerical simulation results. After distributed-Bragg-reflector coating, we have realized a wavelength-tunable open microcavity with a quality factor Q exceeding 1000 and a mode volume V of 13.6 μm3, and laser emission is demonstrated from this microcavity.

Abstract:Air-clad silica nanofibers, named for their submicrometer diameters, have a large core–cladding index contrast for efficient optical confinement. For single-mode operation, these fibers are usually thinner than the wavelength of the light they carry and are therefore also called sub wavelength-diameter fibers. The small diameter of a nanofiber and the large core–cladding index contrast yield a number of interesting optical properties such as tight optical confinement, large evanescent fields, strong field enhancement, and large waveguide dispersions. A few techniques can be used to fabricate silica nanowires or nanofibers such as photo or electron beam lithography, chemical growth, and taper drawing of optical fibers. The taper-drawing method exhibits simplicity in fabrication and also the ability to fabricate nanofibers with extraordinary diameter uniformities, atomic-level surface smoothness, and long length that are difficult to achieve by any other means. The nanofibers obtained with the two-step taper-drawing techniques consist of three parts—a millimeters-long taper that is connected to the starting microfiber, a uniform nanofiber with a length up to tens of millimeters, and an abruptly tapered end that is usually several to tens of micrometers in length.

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofihers are one-dimensional free-standing waveguiding structures with diameters close to or smaller than the vacuum wavelength of the guided light. Fabricated by physically drawing glass fiber at high temperature these fibers show excellent surface smoothness and diameter uniformity, high mechanical strength, tight optical confinement, strong evanescent field, evident surface field enhancement, and large wavelength/diameter-dependent waveguide dispersion, especially much lower waveguiding loss than all other micro/nanowaveguides with similar geometries. These merits offer them great potentials in applications ranging from near field optical coupling, optical sensing, atom optics, nonlinear optics, laser technology, and optomechanics. In this review, starting from the basic waveguiding properties of optical micro/nanofihers, we introduce our recent progress in high precision fiber fabrication and micro/nanofiber-based near field coupling, optical sensors, and nonlinear optical devices. At same time, we also mention relative works from other groups. Finally, we conclude this article with a brief outlook.

Abstract:Achromatic performance is crucial for numerous multi -wavelength optical fiber applications, including endoscopic imaging and fiber sensing. This paper presents the design and nanoprinting of a fiber-integrated achromatic diffractive lens within the visible spectrum (450-650 nm). The 3D nanoprinting is achieved by a high-resolution direct laser writing technology, overcoming limitations in the optical performance caused by the lack of an arbitrary 3D structure writing capability and an insufficient feature resolution in the current manufacturing technology for visible light broadband achromatic diffractive lenses. A three-step optimization algorithm is proposed to effectively balance optical performance with writing difficulty. The characterization results demonstrate excellent achromatic focusing performance, paving the way towards the development of nanoprinted flat optical devices for applications such as optical fiber traps, miniature illumination systems, and integrated photonic chips.(c) 2023 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:Subwavelength- and nanometer-diameter glass nanofibers have been fabricated using a high-temperature taper-drawing process. As-drawn nanofibers show extraordinary uniformities in terms of diameter variation and surface roughness and are suitable for single-mode optical wave guiding. Measured optical losses of these nanofibers are typically below 0.1dB/mm. Photonic devices such as linear waveguides, optical couplers and microrings assembled with nanofibers are also demonstrated. Our results show that taper-drawn glass nanofibers are promising building blocks for micro- and nano-scale photonic devices.
Fabrication of Optical Cavities with Femtosecond Laser Pulses

Abstract:We report on fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) high-quality (Q) whispering-gallery-mode microcavities by femtosecond laser micromachining. The main fabrication procedures include the formation of on-chip freestanding microdisk through selective material removal by femtosecond laser pulses, followed by surface smoothing processes (CO2 laser reflow for amorphous glass and focused ion beam (FIB) sidewall milling for crystalline materials) to improve the Q factors. Fused silica microcavities with 3D geometries are demonstrated with Q factors exceeding 106. A microcavity laser based on Nd:glass has been fabricated, showing a threshold as low as 69μW via free space continuous-wave optical excitation at the room temperature. CaF2 crystalline microcavities with Q factor of ~4.2×104 have also been demonstrated. This technique allows us to fabricate 3D high-Q microcavities in various transparent materials such as glass and crystals, which will benefit a broad spectrum of applications such as nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and bio-sensing.

Abstract:A new design and fabrication of flat optical lens by use of 90-degree volume holographic grating recording geometry is presented. It is recorded by the interference of a plane wave and a spherical wave in a Fe-doped LiNbO3. The flat optical lens can laterally transfer and focus the plane wave which perpendicularly incidents on the planar crystal surface. The optimal switching from recording to thermal fixing is taken into consideration in order to obtain the nonvolatile hologram with maximum fixing efficiency. The flat optical lens with different recording and reconstructing wavelength has also been discussed. The flat optical lens has the advantages of light weight, laterally transferring and focusing, small duty ratio, and easy for the microstructure integration. The testing results measured verify that the flat optical lens can successfully be used for the free space optical communication.

Abstract:We present a novel micro-fabrication technique for creating concave surfaces on the endfacets of photonic crystal fibers. A fiber fusion splicer is used to generate arc discharges to melt and reshape the fiber endfacet. This technique can produce large spherical concave surfaces with roughness as low as 0.12 nm in various types of photonic crystal fibers. The deviation of fabricated surface and a spherical profile in the region of 70 µm in diameter is less than 50 nm. The center of the concave surface and the fiber mode field are highly coincident with a deviation less than 500 nm. Finesse measurements have shown that a Fabry-Pérot cavity composed of the fiber fabricated using this method and a plane mirror maintains finesse of 20000. This method is easy to replicate, making it a practical and efficient approach to fabricate concave surface on fibers for open-access fiber Fabry-Pérot cavities.
Single- and multi-layer micro-scale diffractive lens fabrication for fiber imaging probes with versatile depth-of-field

Abstract:Hair-thin optical fiber endoscopes have opened up new paradigms for advanced imaging applications in vivo. In certain applications, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), light-shaping structures may be required on fiber facets to generate needle-like Bessel beams with large depth-of-field, while in others shorter depths of field with high lateral resolutions are preferable. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel method to fabricate light-shaping structures on optical fibres, achieved via bonding encapsulated planar diffractive lenses onto fiber facets. Diffractive metallic structures have the advantages of being simple to design, fabricate and transfer, and our encapsulation approach is scalable to multi-layer stacks. As a demonstration, we design and transfer a Fresnel zone plate and a diffractive axicon onto fiber facets, and show that the latter device generates a needle-like Bessel beam with 350 mu m focal depth. We also evaluate the imaging performance of both devices and show that the axicon fiber is able to maintain focussed images of a USAF resolution target over a 150 mu m distance. Finally, we fabricate a two-layer stack of Fresnel zone plates on a fiber and characterise the modified beam profile and demonstrate good imaging performance. We anticipate our fabrication approach could enable multi-functional complex optical structures (e.g. using plasmonics, polarization control) to be integrated onto fibers for ultra-thin advanced imaging and sensing.

Abstract:In this Letter, we present a Fresnel lens fabricated on the end of an optical fiber. The lens is fabricated using nanoimprint lithography of a functional high refractive index material, which is suitable for mass production. The main advantage of the presented Fresnel lens compared to a conventional fiber lens is its high refractive index (n=1.68), which enables efficient light focusing even inside other media, such as water or an adhesive. Measurement of the lens performance in an immersion liquid (n=1.51) shows a near diffraction limited focal spot of 810 nm in diameter at the 1/e<sup>2</sup> intensity level for a wavelength of 660 nm. Applications of such fiber lenses include integrated optics, optical trapping, and fiber probes.

Abstract:A fabrication method based on negative tone lift off EBL is developed for constructing nano-structures at end faces of multimode optical fibers. With this new approach, precise and robust nano-structures with high spatial resolutions can be fabricated with minimum damage to the optical fiber face during the fabrication process. Based on this approach, high numerical aperture micro Fresnel zone plates (MZP) with focal lengths ∼3 µm were fabricated on the face of an optical fiber. The focusing characteristics of the fabricated MZP showed good consistency with the numerical simulations at the specified wavelength (∼405 nm).

Novel tapered optical fiber coupler

Abstract:A novel tapered optical fiber coupler was proposed with its waveguide refractive index gradually changing, induced by germanium defects under the UV irradiation. The refractive index change of 6*10-3 in the single-mode communication fiber was achieved in the experiment by means of pre-treating the fiber in high pressure and low temperature environment. A particular index taper profile function was obtained by delicately controlling the exposure conditions, and the mode field radius (MFR) was reduced from 4.8 to 3.2 micrometer in single mode fibers. The coupled wave theory analysis shows that the tapered coupler is capable of excellent transmission for fundamental mode with very small model conversions.
Novel fiber taper for efficient optical interconnection

Abstract:The optical fiber taper coupling with its refractive index gradually changing along its propagation axis caused by photosensitivity was analyzed theoretically. The numerical results for two different taper shapes in step-index fiber show that the coupling of fundamental mode to the reflected mode and to high-order mode are relatively small provided the change is gradual. The experiment demonstrates that this index taper is suitable for interconnection of two dissimilar fibers. It may also be applicable for coupling of laser sources or integrated waveguides to fibers.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel fabrication technique for constructing light focusing lenses, dielectric Fresnel zone plates on both flat wafers and tips of plastic optical fibers (POFs). SU-8 zone plate structures are made on glass substrate by photolithography with ink-printed soft mask, and then used as the template for hot embossing on the tip of PMMA POF. Focusing behavior for both 472 and 633nm laser beams and LEDs in different colors are observed on glass wafers and POF tips, indicating that the proposed dielectric Fresnel zone plates can be built onto both substrate by a direct hot embossing process which may lead to a high volume production at low cost. Light intensity measurement on POFs proves that light focusing is achieved while intensity is maintained. This structure is expected to have broad applications in micro-imaging, micro-focusing as well as point-of-care medical surgeries.

Abstract:Optical fiber is a well-established efficient way to guide and manipulate light and allowing high bandwidth optical transmission for long distance communication with low attenuation. Although a dielectric optical waveguide is efficient for transmitting light, its functionality is limited by the dielectric properties of the materials of core and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://cladding.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> light coming out from optical fiber is typically diverging, and the numerical aperture is determined by the refractive index of the fiber materials. Thus, the light intensity decreases significantly upon exiting the fiber. The use of metasurfaces provides the opportunity to tailor light properties for advanced light manipulation and to develop novel optical applications that are flat. By producing a specific phase profile using spatially-varied nano-antenna elements, metasurfaces can control the wavefront of the transmitted, reflected, and scattered light, and enable novel ultrathin optical components such as flat lenses. Here, we report an ultrathin optical metalens cascaded on the facet of optical fiber that enables light focusing in the telecommunication regime. In-fiber metalenses with focal lengths of 28 and 40 um and maximum efficiency of ~16.4% at a wavelength of 1550 nm are demonstrated. The integration of an ultrathin metalens and optical fiber will open the path to revolutionary in-fiber optical devices for practical applications in optical imaging, sensing, and fiber laser.

Novel Concave-Based Micro Optical Components

Abstract:This research demonstrates three novel concave-based micro optical components. A double-concave (DCV) lens is realized by a simple polymer dispensing and sucking process. The DCV component consists of a high-aspect-ratio lens frame structure and dispensed UV-curable polymer lens. Moreover, this study further employs the process for DCV to implement the concave-mirror and the doublet. The measurements show a typical DCV (made of NOA63 polymer) has negative focal lengths of -1.42 mm (for 632.8 nm red-laser) and -1.17 mm (for 473 nm blue-laser), and a typical concave mirror has a focal-length of 3.28mm. The NOA63/PDMS doublet is also demonstrated.

Abstract:A 100‐mm aperture liquid crystal (LC) lens is fabricated by a large‐area interference exposure system with projection lens set. In order to further reduce the f‐number of the lens, a bifacial liquid crystal structure is further proposed, which shortens the focal length of the LC lens by half and has a high diffraction efficiency of 88.37%. Conventional lens technologies face great challenges in applications requiring large apertures and small f‐numbers, while a liquid crystal (LC) lens based on geometric phase is a potential solution. However, the challenge of manufacturing a large size LC flat lens with high efficiency and high phase gradient still remains. Here, an improved interferometric exposure system is proposed to acquire a large‐size vectorial optical field for photo‐alignment. Bifacial LC layers are applied to reduce the focal length while maintaining a large aperture, high diffraction efficiency, and light weight. LC layers are deposited on both sides of the substrate with the same vector system. Finally, a bifacial LC flat lens with a 10 cm diameter and 88.37% diffraction efficiency is fabricated by using optical elements smaller than 2 in., while the effective focal length is reduced from 91.5 cm to 46 cm comparing to the single side LC lens. This work demonstrates the great advantages of LC‐based flat lenses for flat optical systems with large aperture.

Abstract:We propose a new technique to fabricate a highly specialized optical element, a hybrid planar Grating/Fresnel lens (G-Fresnel), which is particularly useful to improve or enable more-affordable miniature/portable spectrometers. Both the Fresnel and the grating surface are fabricated simultaneously by sandwiching soft PDMS between a hard grating and a pre-replicated negative Fresnel surface. Several adhesion reduction techniques are also investigated that help improve both fabrication and cost efficiency (by reducing the solidification time) as well as the lifetime of the mold. Alignment errors are systematically analyzed, and their effects on the G-Fresnel lens evaluated. A compact fabrication platform was built, which is smaller than a volume of 160 x 140 x 106 mm(3) to fit into a conventional vacuum drying oven, for the fabrication of a G-Fresnel lens with a diameter of 25.4 mm, an equivalent focal length of 25 mm, and a blazed grating pattern with 600 lines/mm spacing. The solidification time was reduced to 2 hours thanks to the improved adhesion reduction technique that permits a PDMS drying-temperature as high as 65 degrees C. The fabricated G-Fresnel lens was evaluated with regard to both geometrical fabrication precision and optical performance. The measured results, using a step gauge and atomic force microscopy, confirm that this replication technique produces high-quality replicates of the master surface-profile. Furthermore, a prototype spectrometer that uses a G-Fresnel lens was built and evaluated. The spectrometer fits within a volume of about 100 mm x 50 mm x 30 mm, and it operates across a wide wavelength spectrum (450 nm to 650 nm). Both the calculation based on the optical software ZEMAX and the experimental measurements are consistent and confirm that the spectrometer with the G-Fresnel lens can provide a spectral resolution of better than 1.2 nm.
