Abstract:Pt‐based alloys are considered the universal choice among electrocatalysts for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, improving the electrocatalytic efficiency with the use of minimal amount of Pt is very challenging. A new strategy has been developed to fabricate a “double nanoporous” structure, in which nanoporous PtFe alloy (np‐PtFe) is embedded in nanoporous graphene (NPG), through in situ etching and acid leaching treatments. The np‐PtFe/NPG‐700 served as an effective bifunctional catalyst for both HER and ORR, exhibiting higher activity and stability than 20% Pt/C. Theoretical calculations reveal that the graphene nanopores not only play a vital role in improving the stability of the nanoporous PtFe alloy but also downshift the d‐band center of the PtFe alloy, thus improving the catalytic activity. The double nanoporous structure also provides numerous diffusion channels, which facilitated the mass and charge transport during HER and ORR.
Sharp-tip enhanced catalytic CO oxidation by atomically dispersed Pt1/Pt2 on a raised graphene oxide platform

Abstract:Revealing structure–activity relationships of graphene-supported atomically dispersed transition metal catalysts is of key importance in catalysis chemistry and materials science. Here we report a first-principles theoretical study on O2 activation and CO oxidation catalyzed by atomically dispersed Pt1/Pt2 anchored on a raised graphene (Gr) platform. The unique sharp-tip structure of the protuberant graphene platform (carbon-tip) can collect extra polarization electrons on the Pt-tip, promoting electron transfer between the catalyst and adsorbates, and greatly enhancing the chemical activity. Higher carbon-tips on defective graphene oxide with a carbon vacancy (Gr-V) produce more polarization electrons, a more localized electric field, and a larger up-shift of the d-orbital center of the Pt-tip, resulting in better catalytic performance. The carbon-tip enhancement reduces the energy barrier for the CO oxidation on Pt1O2/Gr-V from 1.19 eV to 0.56 eV compared with Pt1 on planar Gr. In addition, CO poisoning is significantly alleviated, with the CO poisoning rate Γθ reduced from 2.00 eV to 0.52 eV. Moreover, a linear relationship between the activation barrier and the binding energy of adsorbates is found for various atomically dispersed Pt-tip catalysts on the raised graphene oxide platform. Importantly, the order of catalytic activity is consistent with the carbon-tip enhancement, i.e., Pt1O2/Gr-V \u003e Pt2O4/Gr-V \u003e Pt1O2/Gr \u003e Pt2O4/Gr. These findings provide important guidance for rational design of atomically dispersed catalysts.
Graphene edge-enhanced anchoring of the well-exposed cobalt clusters via strong chemical bonding for accelerating the oxygen reduction reaction

Abstract:Efficient anchoring of transitional metals on supporting materials with well-exposed metal atoms and tuned chemical bonds between them is crucially important for the design of high-performance electrocatalysts. In this study, we adopted a strategy of using defective carbon nanotubes to synthesize holey graphene oxide with tunable basal plane hole size. Via the in situ formation of cobalt clusters during the process of doping of nitrogen into holey graphene oxide, the obtained composite showed strong chemical bonding of highly exposed cobalt with nitrogen and carbon on the nitrogen-doped holey graphene. It was found that the basal plane hole of graphene was beneficial for the deposition of cobalt; detailed analysis showed that rich defects on the basal plane favored the doping of pyridinic nitrogen and graphitic nitrogen and enhanced the chemical bonding of cobalt with nitrogen; this improved the four-electron transfer selectivity of the ORR; thus, the effectively enhanced catalytic activity of composites was comparable to those of the commercial Pt/C catalyst; moreover, these composites exhibited superior stability than the commercial Pt/C catalyst.

Abstract:Due to the high cost of Pt-based materials for electrocatalysis, substitute catalysts composed of nonprecious metals have been in high demand. Herein, an ultrastable electrocatalyst with cobalt nanocrystals grown through the plane of graphene subunits of nitrogen-doped graphenes was synthesized via a one-step route. The catalyst has more positive onset and half-wave potential than Pt/C, high methanol crossover tolerance, and superior stability. It is the introduction of strongly bonded cobalt nanocrystals into the network of graphenes that modulate the electronic properties of the latter, resulting in the superb electrocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed metals and their environments strongly influence their electrocatalytic activities. In this work, we synthesized a series of cobalt/nitrogen doped graphene (Co-NG) catalysts. Cobalt atom dispersion and aggregation on NG's basal plane, bond states of cobalt and nitrogen along with graphene basal plane defect and their impacts on hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities and kinetics were intensively studied. We found that a geometrically controlled formation of active CoN and CoC sites in the NG's basal plane is the key issue for improving interfacial Faradic reaction kinetics and thus enhancing hydrogen evolution. Differently, chemical bonding of finely dispersed cobalt atoms with oxygen, nitrogen and carbon together improves interfacial water oxidation kinetics for achieving high OER activity.

Abstract:The geometry, electronic structure, and catalytic properties for CO oxidation of Pt atom supported on pri-graphene (PG), Haeckelite (H), and Stone–Wales-defect-graphene are investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In contrast to a Pt atom on PG, defective graphene, especially the Haeckelite, strongly stabilises the Pt atom and makes it more positive and thus the CO poisoning. At the same time the catalytic activities are as high as the pristine one. Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanisms are favoured as the starting state and are followed by the Eley–Rideal reaction. The results indicate the benefit of Haeckelite as a substrate for the Pt atom and validate the reactivity of catalysts on the atomic scale with low cost and high activity.

Abstract:Pt single atom electrocatalysts are synthesized on vertical graphene edges for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Angle‐dependent X‐ray absorption spectroscopy and density‐functional theory calculations show that the graphene edge alters the electronic properties of Pt single atoms, improving their catalytic performance. This work reveals a design approach for high performing electrocatalysts with minimal precious metal loading used for energy conversion reactions. Graphene edges exhibit a highly localized density of states that result in increased reactivity compared to its basal plane. However, exploiting this increased reactivity to anchor and tune the electronic states of single atom catalysts (SACs) remains elusive. To investigate this, a method to anchor Pt SACs with ultra‐low mass loadings at the edges of edge‐rich vertically aligned graphene (as low as 0.71 μg Pt cm–2) is developed. Angle‐dependent X‐ray absorption spectroscopy and density‐functional theory calculations reveal that edge‐anchored Pt SACs has a robust coupling with the π‐electrons of graphene. This interaction results in a higher occupancy of the Pt 5d orbital, shifting the d‐band center toward the Fermi level, improving the adsorption of *H for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Pt primarily coordinated to the graphene edge shows improved alkaline HER performance compared to Pt coordinated in mixed environments (turnover frequencies of 22.6 and 10.9 s–1 at an overpotential of 150 mV, respectively). This work demonstrates an effective route to engineering the coordination environment of Pt SACs by using the graphene edge for enhanced energy conversion reactions.

Surface Polarization Matters: Enhancing the Hydrogen‐Evolution Reaction by Shrinking Pt Shells in Pt–Pd–Graphene Stack Structures

Abstract:Surface charge state plays an important role in tuning the catalytic performance of nanocrystals in various reactions. Herein, we report a synthetic approach to unique Pt-Pd-graphene stack structures with controllable Pt shell thickness. These unique hybrid structures allow us to correlate the Pt thickness with performance in the hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER). The HER activity increases with a decrease in the Pt thickness, which is well explained by surface polarization mechanism as suggested by first-principles simulations. In this hybrid system, the difference in work functions of Pt and Pd results in surface polarization on the Pt surface, tuning its charge state for hydrogen reduction. Meanwhile, the supporting graphene provides two-dimensional channels for efficient charge transport, improving the HER activities. This work opens up possibilities of reducing Pt usage while achieving high HER performance.

Abstract:Based on first principles method, the catalytic property of nitrogen-doped graphene is investigated for cathode oxygen reduction reaction. It is revealed that nitrogen clusters other than the isolated one are the most efficient catalytic sites for oxygen reduction. Codoping boron (or Fe, Co) can effectively stabilize these otherwise high energy clusters while keeping the cluster's high activity. Clusters with three or four nitrogens are found to be optimal. Theoretically, catalytic properties similar to or even superior to platinum can be obtained. The results can act as guiding principles for designing new functional materials via codoping.

Abstract:A novel Fe3O4 nanoparticles/nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel (denoted as Fe3O4@NGA) hybrid material with high porosity was prepared by using iron-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [Fe3O(H2N-BDC)3] (H2N-BDC=2-aminoterephtalic acid), denoted as MIL-88B-NH2, as templates and nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel (NGA) as the substrate. The obtained Fe3O4 nanoparticles demonstrate a rich edge area with abundant exposed active sites and defects, indicating great potential for oxygen adsorption and activation. When used as an electrocatalyst in alkaline solution, the Pt-free Fe3O4@NGA exhibited excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance and dramatically enhanced durability and tolerance towards methanol compared to commercial Pt/C catalyst, revealing its great viability and potential in practical application.

Abstract:Graphene nanosheets (GNS) supporting Pt nanoparticles (PNs) are prepared using perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) as a functionalization and anchoring agent. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) results indicate that the prepared Pt NPs are uniformly deposited on GNS with a narrow particle size ranging from 1 to 4 nm in diameter. A high catalytic activity of this novel catalyst is observed by both cyclic voltammetry and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) measurements due to the increasing of proton (H+) transmission channels. Significantly, this novel PFSA-functionalized Pt/GNS (PFSA-Pt/GNS) catalyst reveals a better CO oxidation and lower loss rate of electrochemical active area in comparison with that of the plain Pt/GNS and conventional Pt/C catalysts, indicating our PFSA-Pt/GNS catalysts hold much higher stability and CO tolerance by virtue of introduction of PFSA.

Abstract:Decoration with alien atoms and increasing the edge content are two valid ways to activate the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) property of nanocarbons. To further enhance their intrinsic activity and explore the underlying ORR mechanism, graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) were selected as an ideal catalyst model. Theoretical simulations have predicted that with the synergistic effect between heteroatom-doping and edge sites, the ORR activity can be significantly improved. Inspired by this, N-GNRs were synthesized via the oxidative unzipping of CNTs followed by nitrogen incorporation with urea. Ample edges and nitrogen doping sites were detected by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. As a result, N-GNRs exhibited remarkably higher ORR properties in terms of onset and half-wave potentials, Tafel slopes, electron transfer number and methanol tolerance than either GNRs, the control sample without doping, or N-CNTs, the control sample without abundant edges, simply clarifying the significance of synergy between dopants and edges. Thus, this work provides a simple but efficient strategy to fabricate high-performance oxygen reduction catalysts.

Abstract:It has been empirically established that graphitic carbon deposits often result in deactivation of metal catalysts due to the physical blockage of surface active sites. Our recent surface science works however demonstrate that molecules such as CO can adsorb on Pt(111) surface covered by graphene overlayers via an intercalation process, and surface reactions e.g. CO oxidation have been enhanced by the graphene covers. In this work, supported Pt nanocatalysts were coated by ultrathin graphitic carbon layers through chemical vapor deposition process forming Pt@C core–shell nanostructures, which were confirmed by characterizations of Raman spectroscopy, temperature-programmed oxidation and transmission electron microscopy. CO oxidation over the Pt@C catalysts shows a lower apparent activation energy compared with the pure Pt catalysts, and in-situ infrared studies indicate that the reactions occur under the graphitic shells. The present results suggest that coating metal nanocatalysts with ultrathin graphitic overlayers may be used to promote metal catalyzed reactions.

Abstract:Designing bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) holds a central position for performance improvement in reversible oxygen/water redox cell systems. Herein, taking the graphene-confining single-atom M-N-4 motif as an example, we explored the effect of a graphene edge (armchair and zigzag configurations) on their bifunctional ORR and OER activities. It is clarified that the symmetry breaking of the M-N-4 motif around the edge has a potential influence on the intermediates' adsorption and thermodynamic pictures. Based on the evaluation of the electrochemical step symmetry index (ESSI) and bifunctional index (BI), Co-N-4 and Rh-N-4 motifs at the armchair edge with BIs of 0.49 and 0.61 V are predicted as optimal bifunctional catalytic sites for the ORR/OER due to the d-band modulation from the edge environment. Our results unfold the effect of the graphene edge on the oxygen-involving electrocatalytic mechanism and provide a clear theoretical guidance for the design of bifunctional oxygen electrode materials in reversible fuel cells, electrolyzers, and rechargeable metal-air batteries.

Abstract:We develop an efficient approach to fabricate nitrogen-doped graphene with tunable pyridinic nitrogen levels (from 1.1 to 1.8 at.%), abundant in-plane holes and high surface areas (623 m(2) g(-1)) via a hydrothermal treatment of graphene oxide with hydrogen peroxide and subsequent annealing under ammonia gas. It is found that the chemical etching is beneficial to the formation of pyridinic nitrogen in graphene during the nitrogen-doping process, which is crucial to enhancing the electrocatalytic properties of graphene for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Hence, the optimized NG exhibits good electrocatalytic activity, more positive onset potential than Pt-C (-0.08 V versus -0.09 V), good durability, and high selectivity when it is employed as a metal-free catalyst for ORR. This approach may uncover a mechanism in escalation of pyridinic N atoms doped on the graphene basal edge and provide an efficient platform for the synthesis of a series of heteroatom-doped graphene with tunable heteroatom content for broad applications.
