Abstract:In this Letter, we propose an approach to achieving photonics-enabled compressive sensing of sparse wideband radio frequency signals in which an incoherent broadband source is applied, and the mixing and integration functions are realized in the optical domain. A spectrum shaper is employed to slice and encode the spectrum of the broadband light according to a predetermined random sequence. Because of the dispersion-induced group delay, the mixing between the incoming signal and the random bit sequence is achieved. At the output of the spectrum shaper, an array of photodetectors is employed to realize down-sampling, and the input sparse signal can be captured in a single-shot mode. Since no pulsed laser is employed, our scheme obviates the need for time-domain synchronization between the repetitive ultra-fast pulses and the random sequence. Experimental demonstrations and numerical results are presented to verify the feasibility and potential of the approach.

Abstract:A novel, to the best of our knowledge, photonics-assisted scheme for compressed sensing (CS) of sparse RF signals is proposed. An architecture with time-delayed dual-channel modulation of a pseudo-random binary sequence in combination with differential detection enables the generation of a rate-doubled bipolar random sequence, which largely increases the bandwidth of the CS system. In addition, the bipolarity of the random sequence ensures a zero-mean measurement matrix, which helps improve the signal recovery performance. Experimental results are presented to verify the performance improvement of the approach in comparison with the conventional single-ended photonic CS system.

Abstract:In this letter, we present a novel approach to realizing photonics-assisted compressive sensing (CS) with the technique of microwave photonic filtering. In the proposed system, an input spectrally sparse signal to be captured and a random sequence are modulated on an optical carrier via two Mach–Zehnder modulators (MZMs). Therefore, the mixing process (the signal to be captured mixing with the random sequence) is realized in the optical domain. The mixed optical signal then propagates through a length of dispersive fiber. As the double-sideband modulation in a dispersive optical link leads to a frequency-dependent power fading, low-pass filtering required in the CS is then realized. A proof-of-concept experiment for compressive sampling and recovery of a signal containing three tones at 310MHz, 1GHz and 2GHz with a compression factor up to 10 is successfully demonstrated. More simulation results are also presented to recover signals within wider bandwidth and with more frequency components.

Abstract:Compressive sensing (CS) is a novel technology to realize sub-Nyquist sampling for measuring of sparse signals. Due to the advantages of high bandwidth offered by photonics, realization of compressive sensing in a photonic link is of great interest. In this paper, we discussed the limitations of CS in a conventional photonic link A potential solution is proposed. To further reduce sampling rate, we propose to combine the techniques of photonic time stretch and CS. In addition, the photonic CS with random mixing realized by a spatial light modulator is discussed. Theoretical limit on frequency resolution for spectral mixing is derived.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a multifrequency radio frequency (RF) spectrum estimation technology. With photonic assistance, a multifrequency RF signal ranging from 0 to 1 GHz is highly spectrally compressed and sensed using a single analog-to-digital converter with analog bandwidth of 42.6 MHz. By calculating the cross correlation of pseudo random binary sequence and the encoded signal, up to 40 RF tones are precisely recognized without large computational load. The employment of optical mixing decreased the cost and increased the performance compared to its electrical counterpart. The theory and performance are also discussed. Abstract:A novel approach to realize photonic compressive sensing (CS) with a multi-tap microwave photonic filter is proposed and demonstrated. The system takes both advantages of CS and photonics to capture wideband sparse signals with sub-Nyquist sampling rate. The low-pass filtering function required in the CS is realized in a photonic way by using a frequency comb and a dispersive element. The frequency comb is realized by shaping an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source with an on-chip micro-ring resonator, which is beneficial to the integration of photonic CS. A proof-of-concept experiment for a two-tone signal acquisition with frequencies of 350MHz and 1.25GHz is experimentally demonstrated with a compression factor up to 16.

Abstract:Aim. The introduction of the full paper reviews Refs. 1 through 6 and then proposes the research of this paper, which is explained in sections 1, 2, and 3. Their core is: "In the ideal cognitive radio (CR) systems, CR users are capable of sensing wide band spectrum simultaneously. However, due to the physical limits of front end devices, the real time entire spectrum sensing is difficult to be actualized. In order to tackle this problem, we propose a wide band spectrum sensing approach based on compressive sampling theory. First, we design a centralized multi-user parallel compressive sampling framework which realizes the high speed analog signal sampling of wide band spectrum sensing through low speed AD equipped CR users. Moreover, according to the compressive sampling theory, the proposed approach sufficiently utilizes the sparsity of primary signal on frequency domain. Thus, the base station can recover the frequency domain information of primary user by far less samples than Nyquist rate. Finally, the spectrum occupancy status can be determined by the recovery information. " The simulation results, presented in Figs. 3 and 4, reveal preliminarily that: (1) the proposed method has the higher detection probability and shorter sensing time than energy detection; (2) it needs only 10% memory units compared to conventional sensing schemes.

Abstract:An approach to realizing microwave spectrum sensing based on photonic time stretch and compressive sampling is proposed. The time stretch system is used to slow down the input high-speed signal and the compressive sampling based on random demodulation can further decrease the sampling rate. A spectrally sparse signal in a wide bandwidth can be captured with a sampling rate far lower than the Nyquist rate thanks to both time stretch and compressive sampling. It is demonstrated that a system with a time stretch factor 5 and a compression factor 8 can be used to capture a signal with multiple tones in a 50 GHz bandwidth, which means a sampling rate 40 times lower than the Nyquist rate. In addition, the time stretch of the microwave signal largely decreases the data rate of random data sequence and therefore the speed of the mixer in the random demodulator.

Abstract:We propose a single-channel photonic compressed sampling scheme. The program is composed of 4 MZMs and each MZM is set at an appropriate working point. The sparse microwave signal is modulated onto an optical carrier coded by a pseudo-random sequence, so that the microwave signal randomly distributed in the broadband range can be measured. The numerical analysis shows that a multi-tone signal in 40 GHz range can be located and reconstructed with 4.2 GHz sampling rate with high probability.

Abstract:A novel approach to realize broadband microwave spectrum sensing based on photonic RF channelization and compressive sampling (CS) is proposed. The photonic RF channelization system is used to slice the input broadband signal into multiple sub-channel signals with narrow bandwidth in parallel and thus the rate of pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) and the bandwidth of the MZM for CS can be largely decreased. It is shown that a spectrally sparse signal within a wide bandwidth can be captured with a sampling rate far lower than the Nyquist rate thanks to both photonic RF channelization and CS. In addition, the influence of the non-ideal filtering of the photonic channelizer is evaluated and a novel approach based on measuring twice is proposed to overcome the problem of frequency aliasing induced by the non-ideal filtering. It is demonstrated that a system with 20 Gbit/s PRBS and 2.5 GS/s digitizer can be used to capture a signal with multiple tones within a 40 GHz bandwidth, which means a sampling rate 32 times lower than the Nyquist rate.

Abstract:In this Letter, we present a photonic compressive sampling scheme based on optical sampling and random demodulation for microwave spectral analysis. A novel (to our knowledge) approach to realizing the multiplication of a pseudorandom binary sequence and the input microwave signal of interest in the optical domain is proposed, which largely simplifies the implementation of the compressive sampling. A spectrally sparse signal can be successfully captured by an electrical digitizer with a sampling rate much lower than the Nyquist rate with the help of random demodulation and the sparse reconstruction algorithm. Identification of the signals with multiple frequency components is successfully demonstrated.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel photonic compressive sensing (CS) scheme for acquiring sparse radio frequency signals with adjustable compression ratio in this paper. The sparse signal to be measured and a pseudo-random binary sequence are modulated on consecutively con-nected chirped pulses. The modulated pulses are compressed into short pulses after propagating through a dispersive element. A programmable optical filter based on spatial light modulator is used to real-ize spectral segmentation and demultiplexing. After spectral segmentation, the compressed pulses are transformed into several sub-pulses and each of them corresponds to a measurement in CS. The major advantage of the proposed scheme lies in its adjustable compression ratio, which enables the system adaptive to the sparse signals with variable sparsity levels and bandwidths. Experimental demonstration and further simulation results are presented to verify the feasibility and potential of the approach.

Abstract:Compressive sensing (CS) in the photonic domain is highly promising for analog-to-information conversion of sparse signals due to its potential capability of high input bandwidth and digitization with sub-Nyquist sampling. In this paper, we suggest that the concept of delay-line based microwave photonic filter be used in photonic CS to realize the low-pass filtering (LPF) function which is required in CS. A microwave photonic filter (MPF) with a dispersive element and fiber delay lines is applied in photonic CS to achieve better performance and flexibility. In the approach, the input radio-frequency signal and the pseudorandom bit sequence (PRBS) are modulated on a multi-wavelength optical carrier and propagate through a dispersive element. The modulated optical signal is split into multiple channels with tunable delay lines. The multiple wavelengths, dispersive element and multiple channels constitute a reconfigurable low-pass microwave filter. Experiment and simulations are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and potentials of this approach.

Abstract:A photonic distributed compressive sampling (PDCS) approach for identifying the spectra of multi -node wideband sparse signals is proposed. The scheme utilizes wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology to transmit multi -node signals to a central station, where distributed compressive sampling (DCS) based on the random demodulator (RD) model is employed to simultaneously identify the signal spectrum. By exploiting signal correlations among nodes, DCS achieves a higher compression ratio of the sampling rate than single -node compressive sampling (CS). In a semi -physical simulation experiment, we demonstrate the feasibility of the approach by recovering the spectra of two wideband sparse signals from nodes located 20 km and 10 km away. The spectra of two signals with a mixed support -set sparsity of 2 and 4 are recovered with a compression ratio of 8 and 4, respectively. We further investigate the impact of common parts and the number of nodes on PDCS performance through numerical simulation. The proposed system takes advantage of the ultra -high bandwidth of photonic technology and the low loss of optical fiber transmission, making it suitable for long-distance, multi -node, and large -coverage electromagnetic spectrum identification.
