Abstract:A photoresponsive ternary host-guest molecular recognition motif between cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]), the 1,1-dimethyl-4,4-bipyridinium dication (DMV2+) and an azobenzene derivative (trans-2) in water was applied in this paper to construct a cross-linked supramolecular polymer. Various characterization methods were adopted to prove the formation of the polymer, such as H-1 NMR, DOSY, specific viscosity measurements, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Additionally, the tetraphenylethylene moiety was incorporated into this system and the aggregation induced emission (AIE) properties of the supramolecular polymer were also investigated.
Synthesis of a Multiple Stimulus-responsive Multicolor Fluorescent Hydrogel

Abstract:On the basis of molecular structure design theory, a novel fluorescent ligand, 6-{3-[2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] ureido} picolinic acid(UPA), was designed and synthesized. The hydrogels were prepared by the free radical polymerization with UPA and zwitterionic sulfobetaine(DMA) as monomers, clay as a physical crosslinker. The fluorescent ligand was introduced into the hydrogel structure by UV light curing, and then the lanthanide complex was formed in the hydrogel after Eu3+ or Tb3+ coordination, and a new intelligent rare-earth hybrid hydrogel material with high mechanical strength, good self-healing properties, multiple stimulus responsiveness(temperature, pH, the intensity of ion, etc.) and high luminescence efficiency was constructed, the problems such as poor stability and easy fluorescence quenching in the aqueous phase of rare earth luminescent materials, and poor mechanical properties and single function of traditional hydrogels were solved. It provides a new idea for the preparation of materials in the fields of information security and encryption, biological imaging, fluorescent labeling and so on.

Abstract:A novel photoswitchable cucurbit[8]uril‐spiropyran host–guest complex is designed to exhibit fast and reversible switching of binding ratios between 1:2 and 1:1 in response to UV and blue light. Such photoswitchable complexation stoichiometries are rationally exploited as (de)crosslinking units in multiple polymers for the design of supramolecular hydrogels displaying highly dynamic and switchable features that are spatiotemporally controlled by light. The integration of photoswitchable supramolecular units into hydrogels allows for spatiotemporal control over their nanoscale topological network and macroscale properties using light. Nevertheless, the current availability of photoswitchable supramolecular interactions for the development of such materials remains limited. Here, the molecular design of a novel photoswitchable cucurbit[8]uril‐spiropyran host–guest complex exhibiting fast and reversible switching of binding ratios between 1:2 and 1:1 is reported. Photoswitchable complexation stoichiometries are rationally exploited as (de)crosslinking units in multiple polymers for the design of supramolecular hydrogels displaying highly dynamic and switchable features that are spatiotemporally controlled by light. The hydrogels exhibit rapid reversible mechanical softening‐hardening upon alternating irradiation with blue and UV light, which is used to significantly accelerate and improve the efficiency of self‐healing and shape‐remolding of hydrogels. Furthermore, spiropyran endows such materials with unique reversible photochromic properties for reproducible patterning/erasing and information storage. Using a dual‐light‐assisted extrusion process, meter‐scale hydrogel fibers with enhanced structural integrity and photoswitchable ionic conductivity are constructed and woven into various slidable knots and fluorescent shapes. This work represents an innovative molecular design strategy for advancing the development of spatiotemporally engineered supramolecular hydrogels using light and opens avenues for their prospective applications in dynamic materials and adaptive systems.

Abstract:Host-guest assembly in droplet-based microfluidics opens a new avenue for fabricating supramolecular hydrogel microcapsules with high monodispersity and controlled functionality. In this paper, we demonstrate a single emulsion microdroplet platform to prepare microcapsules with supramolecular hydrogel skins from host molecule cucurbit[8]uril and guest polymer anthracene-functionalized hydroxyethyl cellulose. In contrast to construction of microcapsules from a droplet-in-droplet double emulsion, here the electrostatic attraction between charged polymer and surfactant facilitates formation of defined supramolecular hydrogel skins in a single emulsion. Furthermore, by taking advantage of dynamic interactions and the tunable cross-linked supramolecular hydrogel network, it is possible to prepare microcapsules with triggered and UV-controlled molecular permeability. These could be potentially used in a delivery system for e.g. agrochemicals, nutraceuticals or cosmetics.

Abstract:Four fluorescent low molecular weight gelators based on benzoxazole or benzothiazole functionalized pyrimidine were designed and synthesized. The ability of the target was tested, and all compounds could form stable su-pramolecular gels in an alcohol/water mixture and its fluorescence increased during gel formation. Photo -physical spectra during gel formation, SEM, XRD, FT-IR study suggested that the self-assembly was driven by hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces and weak it-it interaction. Interestingly, the gel collapsed after being illuminated by 365 nm UV light and 1H NMR of the gel before and after illumination proved that the [2 + 2]-cycloaddition between the double bond of pyrimidine was responsible for the light response. Furthermore, the fluorescent of xerogel film could be quenched by volatile acids while the fluorescent of the solution was enhanced after acid was added. The different phenomena were discussed. The nano-fiber assembled via gel formation could be used as fluorescent imaging material of latent fingerprints.

Abstract:A bifunctional monomer FGG-PEG8-GGF bearing two Phe-Gly-Gly residues and an octaethylene glycol linker has been designed and synthesized. Water-soluble supramolecular polymers can form spontaneously by mixing the monomer and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) in a 1 : 1 ratio through specific interactions between CB[8] and the Phe-Gly-Gly residues.

Abstract:In this work, a novel diacid monomer was synthesized in a very convenient scheme. The monomer is derived from naturally occurring products and emits strong fluorescence when polymerized to polyanhydride. The chemical structure of the monomer dCPS is as follows: HOC(O)ArOC(O)(CH2)2C(O)O--Ar--COOH. Copolyanhydrides composed of dCPS and sebacic acid were further prepared by melt copolycondensation, and characterized by IR, NMR, UV-Vis, DSC and fluorometry. The emission wavelength (lambda(em)) of the copolymers could be tuned by the excitation wavelength (lambda(ex)). Fluorescence intensity increased with the increase of dCPS content. The microspheres fabricated from the copolymer with dCPS content as low as 10% could be clearly visualized with fluorescence microscopy. Either blue or green images of the microspheres could be captured with an excitation of UV and visible light. The degradation rate of the copolyanhydrides decreased as the dCPS fraction increased, and the degradation duration could be modulated from several days to more than three months. In addition, it was found that the copolyanhydrides displayed surface degradation characteristics. In view of the advantages of the novel copolyanhydrides, such as easy preparation, unique inherent luminescent properties, and widely adjustable degradation rate, they might be useful for biomedical engineering.

Abstract:The hydrogels composed of decamethylcucurbit[5]uril (Me10 Q[5]) and para-phenylenediamine (p-PDA) are first reported herein. They are the first Q[5]-based supramolecular hydrogels, the formation of which is driven by portal exclusion between Me10 Q[5] and p-PDA. The composition, structure, and properties of the Me10 Q[5]/p-PDA-based hydrogels are investigated by various techniques. Since the 1D supramolecular chain forms via portal exclusion between Me10 Q[5] and p-PDA is the key to the formation of the hydrogels, any competitive species, such as metal ions, organic molecules, and amino acids, which can affect the portal exclusion, can change the behavior of the Me10 Q[5]/p-PDA-based hydrogels. Hence, the hydrogels can be used for various applications. Importantly, the results may provide a new research direction for the preparation of Q[n]-based hydrogels via portal exclusion of Q[n]s with guests.

Abstract:Well-defined supramolecular helical nanofibers have been constructed by a rationally designed achiral monomer in aqueous solution based on the 1: 2 hostguest combination between cucurbit[8] uril and a 4,4'-bipyridin-1-ium chloride (BPY+) salt derivative. The formed nanostructures could be adjusted by varying the concentration of monomer from helical nanofibers to a pH-responsive hydrogel.

Abstract:Based on the combination of B21C7/dialkylammonium salt host-guest interactions and tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect, a fluorescent supramolecular crosslinked polymer gel was successfully prepared. Compared with the solution of TPE-containing small molecules, this gel exhibited remarkable fluorescence enhancement due to the AIE effect of TPE units. The “gelation induced fluorescence emission” phenomenon can be explained by the hindered intramolecular rotation of phenyl rings of TPE. Because of the reversibility and stimuli-responsiveness of the B21C7/dialkylammonium salt host-guest interactions, the transition between the fluorescent supramolecular crosslinked polymer gel and the disassembled sol with very weak fluorescence can be realized by adding pH and thermal stimuli. This novel material contributes to the development of supramolecular chemistry, polymer science and fluorescent materials and offers a new method to construct functional supramolecular materials.

Abstract:A novel water-soluble supramolecular dendronized polymer (SDP) was prepared through cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8])-naphthalene host guest interaction. The composition ratio between BDP and CB[8] of as-prepared luminescent supramolecular polymer was confirmed by H-1 NMR technique and mass spectrometry. In addition, atomic force microscopy (AFM) images showing the polymer chain length up to 150 nm and height up to 1.75 nm unambiguously demonstrate the supramolecular polymer formation. This work might be useful for designing other main chain supramolecular dendronized polymers.

Abstract:Functionalized hydrogels, with their unique and adaptable structures, have attracted significant attention in materials and biomaterials research. Fluorescent hydrogels are particularly noteworthy for their sensing capabilities and ability to mimic cellular matrices, facilitating cell infiltration and tracking of drug delivery. Structural elucidation of hydrogels is crucial for understanding their responses to stimuli such as the pH, temperature, and solvents. This study developed a fluorescent hydrogel by functionalizing chitosan with p-cresol-based quinazolinone aldehyde. Confocal microscopy revealed the hydrogel's intriguing fluorogenic properties. The hydrogel exhibited enhanced fluorescence and a tunable network morphology, influenced by the THF-water ratio. The study investigated the control of gel network reformation in different media and analyzed the fluorescence responses and structural changes of the sugar backbone and fluorophore. Proper selection of mixed solvents is essential for optimizing the hydrogel as a fluorescence probe for bioimaging. This hydrogel demonstrated greater swelling properties, making it highly suitable for drug delivery applications.
Photomodulated Morphologies in Halogen Bond-Driven Assembly during Gel-Sol Transition

Abstract:Photoresponsive supramolecular gels with various applications are being constantly pursued; however, achieving well-defined morphology changes of gels via light irradiation remains a formidable challenge. In this study, a gel is prepared through halogen bond between azopyridine-containing Azopy-C10 and 1,4-tetrafluorodiiodobenzene. The gel exhibits gel-sol transition due to trans-cis isomerization of the azopyridine moiety upon UV irradiation. During this transition, the morphologies vary from flake to fluffy bobble-like and finally to peony-like with increasing exposure time, which is difficult to achieve in traditional assembly systems. The microstructure change is attributed to the variations of cis-isomer content and halogen-bonding strength. The supramolecular gel provides a novel method to achieve photomodulated morphologies and broadens the applications of such kind of materials, ranging from information storage to high-tech anticounterfeit.
Polymerization-Induced Crystallization of Dopant Molecules: An Efficient Strategy for Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of Hydrogels

Abstract:Conventional hydrogels such as polyacrylamide and polyacrylic acid ones seldom exhibit phosphorescences at ambient conditions, which limit their applications as optical materials. We propose and demonstrate here a facile strategy to afford these hydrogels with room-temperature phosphorescence by polymerization-induced crystallization of dopant molecules that results in segregation and confinement of the gel matrix with carbonyl groups and thus clusterization-induced phosphorescence. As a model system, crown ethers (CEs) are dissolved in an aqueous solution of concentrated acrylamide that greatly increases the solubility of CEs. During the polymerization process, CEs crystallize to form large spherulites in the polyacrylamide hydrogel. The crystallization arises from the drastically reduced solubility of CEs after the conversion of monomers to polymers during the gel synthesis. The resultant composite hydrogel with a water content of 67 wt % exhibits extraordinary phosphorescence behavior yet maintains good stretchability and resilience. We found that the partial gel matrix is squeezed and confined by in situ-formed crystals, leading to carbonyl clusters and thus phosphorescence emission. The composite gel shows green phosphorescence with an emission peak at 512 nm and a lifetime of 342 ms. The afterglow emission is detectable by the naked eye for several seconds. This strategy has good universality, as validated in other hydrogels with different polymeric matrices and dopant molecules. The development of hydrogels with good mechanical and phosphorescent properties should merit the design of multifunctional soft machines with applications in biomedical and engineering fields.

Abstract:Photodegradable hydrogels that allow 3D encapsulation of cells are important biomaterials to modulate cellular microenvironments with temporal and spatial resolution. Herein we report a photodegradable hydrogel formed by the self-assembly of short peptides modified with a novel phototrigger. The phototrigger is a biaryl-substituted tetrazole moiety that, upon mild light irradiation, undergoes rapid intramolecular photoclick ligation to form a highly fluorescent pyrazoline moiety. Short peptides linked with a tetrazole-containing moiety, Tet(I) or Tet(II), are able to self-assemble into hydrogels, among which the Tet(I)-GFF and Tet(II)-GFRGD gels show good mechanical strength and biocompatibility for 3D encapsulation and prolonged culture of live cells. The phototriggered tetrazole-to-pyrazoline transformation generates a highly fluorescent reporter and induces the disassembly of the hydrogel matrix by disturbing the balance between hydrophilic interaction and it-if stacking of the self-assembled system. Photomodulation of cellular microenvironments was demonstrated not only for the cells grown on top of the gel but also for stem cells encapsulated inside the hydrogels.

Abstract:The cucurbit[n]uril supramolecular hydrogels are driven by weak intermolecular interactions, of which exhibit good stimuli responsiveness and excellent self-healing properties. According to the composition of the gelling factor, supramolecular hydrogels comprise Q[n]-cross-linked small molecules and Q[n]-cross-linked polymers. According to different driving forces, hydrogels are driven by the outer-surface interaction, the host-guest inclusion interaction, and the host-guest exclusion interaction. Host-guest interactions are widely used in the construction of self-healing hydrogels, which can spontaneously recover after being damaged, thereby prolonging their service life. The smart Q[n]s-based supramolecular hydrogel composed is a kind of adjustable and low-toxicity soft material. By designing the structure of the hydrogel or modifying the fluorescent properties, etc., it can be widely used in biomedicine. In this review, we mainly focus on the preparation of Q[n]-based hydrogels and their biomedical applications including cell encapsulation for biocatalysis, biosensors for high sensitivity, 3D printing for potential tissue engineering, drug release for sustained delivery, and interfacial adhesion for self-healing materials. In addition, we also presented the current challenges and prospects in this field.

Abstract:Multicolor fluorescent materials, showing various fluorescent colors at the same time, have been applied in biomimetic materials, sensor arrays, and information storage. However, the vast majority of present multicolor fluorescent materials were prepared within a complicated as well as costly process, which was achieved by incorporating a variety of fluorophores. Herein, we designed multicolor fluorescent supramolecular adhesive gels (MSAGs) based on single pyrene benzohydrazonate (PBHZ) fluorophore. When the concentration of PBHZ groups was adjusted, the gel blocks that make up MSAGs exhibited distinct fluorescence colors ranging from blue to bright green due to the aggregation-induced ratiometric emission (AIRE) effect. In addition, as a consequence of 2-ureido-4-pyrimidone (UPy) units containing in the gel blocks, MSAGs could be facilely obtained through interfacial supramolecular adhesion between these gel blocks. Moreover, the resulting MSAGs with various patterns showed superiority in applying to encrypt multiple information.

Abstract:The construction of hydrogels with good mechanical properties and phosphorescent properties is full of challenges. Herein, we report a supramolecular phosphorescent hydrogel with long lifetime, high tensile strength and self-healing property, which can be easily constructed through in-situ thermal-initiated polymerization of isocyanatoethyl acrylate-modified β-cyclodextrin (β-CD-DA) and acrylate-modified adamantane (Ad-DA), acrylic acid (AA), followed by the non-covalent association with carbon dots (CNDs). The lifetime of phosphorescent hydrogel can reach 1261 ms at room temperature, and the quantum yield is 11%. Importantly, through the efficient triplet to singlet Förster resonance energy transfer (TS-FRET), the phosphorescent hydrogel shows the good phosphorescence energy transfer property for organic dyes Rhodamine B and Eosin Y with the delayed fluorescence lifetime up to 730 ms and 585 ms as well as the energy transfer efficiency (ΦET) up to 99.9% and 99.3%, respectively. Moreover, owing to the host-guest interactions between β-CD-DA and Ad-DA, the three-dimensional cross-linked network phosphorescent hydrogel can be easily stretched to 18 times of its original length, and can achieve self-healing of the cut surfaces within 30 minutes. These results will expand the scope of phosphorescent materials and provide new ideas and opportunities for materials science.
