Abstract: Period-doubling bifurcation is a universal dynamic of nonlinear systems, which has been extensively investigated in laser systems with a single transverse mode. This study presents an experimental observation and theoretical investigation of the period-doubling bifurcation in spatiotemporal mode-locked (STML) multimode fiber lasers. In the period-doubling state, it is observed that the pulse train modulation varies with the transverse-mode, and the output beam profile fluctuates rapidly and periodically. The numerical simulations conducted in this study are in good agreement with the experimental observations. Furthermore, a simple iterative model is proposed by considering the mode-dependent saturable absorption effect, and the experimental results can be qualitatively interpreted by this model. Based on these results, spatiotemporal saturable absorption is believed to be the key factor for the unique spatiotemporal characteristic of period-doubling bifurcation in multimode lasers. This study contributes to the understanding of the complex spatiotemporal dynamics in STML multimode lasers and to the discovery of novel dynamics in high-dimensional nonlinear systems.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal mode-locked (STML) lasers are ideal platforms for investigating high-dimensional nonlinear dynamics. This study presents an experimental observation and theoretical investigation of a novel high-dimensional nonlinear dynamics, which we term spatiotemporal period-doubling bifurcation (SPB), in the STML lasers. In the SPB state, not only the temporal shape but also the spatial beam (i.e., the spatiotemporal structure) of the pulses exhibit period-doubling bifurcation. Abstract:Period multiplication is a bifurcation phenomenon, which depicts a typical roadmap from periodic steady-state to chaos. There has been particular interest in studying period multiplication properties in mode-locked lasers, but the mechanism behind is still not well-studied. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a figure-of-9 fiber laser which can generate period-multiplied pulses with long-term stability. Further theoretical insight is obtained by numerical simulations, which clearly shows that the ratio between the distances of each bifurcation point is approaching the Feigenbaum constant. We believe that the laser design presented here could be a stable and reliable ultrafast optical platform to study bifurcation and chaos, which also has potential applications in optical frequency comb and all-optical modulation.

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of period-doubling bifurcation of dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) pulses in a fiber laser passively mode-locked by using the nonlinear optical loop mirror. Increasing the pump power of the fiber laser, we show that temporally a stable, uniform DSR pulse train could be transformed into a period-doubling state, exhibiting two sets of pulse parameters between the adjacent cavity roundtrip. It is found that DSR pulses in the period-doubling state could maintain the typical feature of DSR pulse: fixed pulse peak power and linear variation in pulse width with respect to the pump power change. The mechanism for achieving period-doubling of DSR pulses is discussed.

Abstract:We report the periodic intensity fluctuations and period-timing bifurcation in a spatiotemporal mode-locked multimode fiber laser. By adjusting the intracavity waveplate or the pump power, the intensity pattern of the spatiotemporal modelocked output could transit from uniformity to period-2, then to period-4. We further find that, in the state of multipleperiod pulsations, the extent of intensity fluctuation of different transverse modes varies. This indicates that not only the entire energy, but also the shape of the output spatial profile alters with multiple-period. A simple model is proposed to interpret the output pulse dynamics of multimode fiber lasers. This investigation would contribute to the understanding of the complex nonlinear dynamics in spatiotemporal mode-locked multimode fiber lasers.

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of period-doubling of randomly distributed multiple solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber laser. We show that after a period-doubling bifurcation, the period of each soliton in the cavity becomes doubled. However, the intensity variation of the solitons is not necessarily synchronized, indicating that their period-doubling is unrelated. Numerical simulations verified the experimental observations.

Abstract:Due to the weak birefringence of single mode fibers, solitons generated in fiber lasers are indeed vector pulses and exhibit periodic parameter change including polarization evolution even when there is a polarizer inside the cavity. Period doubling eigenstates of solitons generated in a fiber laser mode-locked by the nonlinear polarization rotation, i.e., period doubling of polarization components of the soliton, are numerically explored in detail. We found that, apart from the synchronous evolution between the two polarization components, there exists asynchronous development depending on the detailed operation conditions. In addition, period doubling of one polarization component together with period-one of another polarization component can be achieved. When the period tripling window is obtained, much complexed dynamics on the two polarization components could be observed.

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation and numerical simulations of period-doubling of gain-guided solitons in an erbium-doped fiber laser operating in the large net normal cavity dispersion regime. Features of the solitons before and after the period-doubling bifurcation are studied. Our results suggest again that period-doubling is an intrinsic feature of the mode-locked soliton lasers, which is independent of the mode-locked pulse property.

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of period-doubling bifurcation and period-doubling route to chaos in a femtosecond soliton fiber laser passively mode locked by using the nonlinear polarization rotation technique. Increasing energy of the solitons circulating in the laser cavity, it was revealed that the intensity pattern of the output solitons experiences a period doubling route to chaos. Period-doubling route to chaos is a universal property of the nonlinear dynamic systems transiting from a stable state to a chaotic state. This experimental result shows that the nonlinear propagation of soliton pulses in the laser cavity is an intrinsic dynamic process, which follows the universal laws of the nonlinear dynamic systems.

Abstract:Period-doubled dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) pulses are numerically investigated in a Yb-doped fiber laser based on non-linear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). In the case of low pump power, stationary dissipative solitons with uniform pulse peak power are obtained in the laser. Further increasing the pump power, the laser operates in the DSR regime, where the phenomenon of period-doubling bifurcations could occur. In a period-doubled state, the pulse peak power returns back to its original one every two cavity roundtrips while the pulse duration remains almost the same. We analyze the effects of cavity parameters on the DSR-pulse features under the dynamic bifurcations. It is found that the saturation power of NALM plays a dominant role in the formation of period-doubled DSR pulses. Our simulation results are conducive to enriching the dynamics of DSR pulses in non-linear systems.

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of period doubling of multiple dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) pulses in an all-normal-dispersion fiber laser based on a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. By increasing the pump power, in addition to the typically linearly pulse broadening under fixed pulse peak power, the jump from a single DSR pulse to multiple DSR pulses was observed. During this process, the period doubling appears, that is, the DSR pulses can exhibit the characteristics of period doubling in a multi-pulse state. The typical DSR performance of linearly pulse duration change versus pump power varying can be maintained when the period doubling of multiple DSR pulses appears.

Abstract:We report the firstly experimental observation of dual-periodic dual-pulse synchronous pulsation (DDSP) and dual-periodic dual-pulse asynchronous pulsation (DDAP) in a spatiotemporal mode-locked fiber laser, composed of a short-period pulsation (SPP) lasting for tens of round-trip times (RTs) and a long-period pulsation (LPP) lasting for hundreds of RTs. It is found that the DDSP displays in-phase modulations between two pulses during the dual-periodic pulsation, while the DDAP demonstrates out-phase modulations in the SPP. Notably, the study reveals consistent pulsation periods across various transverse modes whether in the DDSP or DDAP, and the LPPs exhibit synchronization for different transverse modes, while the SPPs are asynchronous. Our findings illustrate that transverse modes do not influence the periodic modulation between two pulses. This exploration enhances the comprehension of multi-period pulsations in spatiotemporal mode-locked fiber lasers, and contributes to investigating high-dimensional nonlinear phenomena.

Abstract:We report experimental observation of multimode Q-switching and spatiotemporal mode locking in a multimode fiber laser. A typical steady Q-switching state is achieved with a 1.88 μs pulse duration, a 70.14 kHz repetition rate, and a 215.8 mW output power, corresponding to the single pulse energy of 3.08 μJ. We find weak spatial filtering is essential to obtain stable Q-switched pulses, in contrast to the relatively stronger spatial filtering for spatiotemporal mode locking. Furthermore, a reversible transition process, as well as a critical bistable state, between multimode Q-switching and spatiotemporal mode locking, is achieved with specific spatial coupling and waveplates sets. We believe the results will not only contribute to understanding the complicated nonlinear dynamics in multimode, fiber-based platforms, but also benefit the development of promising high-pulse energy lasers.

Abstract:Dissipative nonlinear wave dynamics have been investigated extensively in mode-locked lasers with single transverse-mode, whereas there are few studies related to three-dimensional nonlinear dynamics within lasers. Recently, spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML) was proposed in lasers with small modal (i.e., transverse-mode) dispersion, which has been considered to be critical for achieving STML in those cavities because the small dispersion can be easily balanced. Here, we demonstrate that STML can also be achieved in multimode lasers with much larger modal dispersion, where we find that the intracavity saturable absorber plays an important role for counteracting the large modal dispersion. Furthermore, we observe a new STML phenomenon of passive nonlinear auto-selection of single-mode mode-locking, resulting from the interaction between spatiotemporal saturable absorption and spatial gain competition. Our work significantly broadens the design possibilities for useful STML lasers thus making them much more accessible for applications, and extends the explorable parameter space of the novel dissipative spatiotemporal nonlinear dynamics that can be achieved in these lasers.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal mode-locked (STML) fiber lasers have become an excellent platform in nonlinear optics research due to the rich nonlinear evolution process. In order to overcome modal walk-off and realize phase locking of different transverse modes, it is usually crucial to reduce the modal group delay difference in the cavity. In this paper, we use long-period fiber grating (LPFG) to compensate the large modal dispersion and differential modal gain in the cavity, realizing the spatiotemporal mode-locking in step-index fibers cavity. The LPFG inscribed in few-mode fiber could induce strong mode coupling, which has wide operation bandwidth based on dual-resonance coupling mechanism. By using dispersive Fourier transform involved intermodal interference, we show that there is a stable phase difference between the transverse modes constituting the spatiotemporal soliton. These results would be beneficial for the study of spatiotemporal mode-locked fiber lasers.

Abstract:In this paper, we report for the first time on an all-multimode fiber spatiotemporal mode-locked figure-eight laser operating at 1.0 µm. This laser utilizes a multimode gain fiber and a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror mechanism. It can generate mode-locked noise-like pulses at different central wavelengths. Additionally, we observed the presence of a multi-soliton state within the cavity by reducing intracavity gain. This study contributes to a broader investigation of various pulse phenomena in spatiotemporal mode-locked lasers and provides valuable insights into further exploring the evolution of spatiotemporal dynamics in such systems.
