Abstract:Long quasi-cyclic low-density parity check (QC-LDPC) codes have been chosen as one of the forward error correction (FEC) schemes in passive optical network (PON) systems benefiting from the excellent performance. About how to get the appropriate LDPC codes, some traditional methods which focus on obtaining large girth or flat approximated cycle extrinsic message degree (ACE) spectrums are proposed for the design of LDPC codes. These methods which may still make the existence of small stopping sets containing short cycles probably are not so useful for long QC-LDPC codes. Recently, the parallel vector message passing (PMP) algorithm oriented-to decreasing the number of short cycles is proved to be an effective method to optimize LDPC codes. Since ignoring short cycles with poor connectivity which can induce error floor, this method cannot guarantee its effectiveness for long QC-LDPC codes. In this letter, an edge exchange optimization method based on the global properties of ACE and girth called EEA method is proposed, which tries to reduce cycles with low ACE in the order of cycle length. The numerical results prove that our EEA method can bring the improvements of error floor up to two orders of magnitude to long QC-LDPC codes and obviously outperforms PMP algorithm.

Abstract:We propose a novel nonbinary low-density parity-check (NB-LDPC) coding scheme for new service overlaid wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON). In conventional binary coding scheme, each channel is encoded/decoded independently; while in our nonbinary coding scheme, old service channel and new service channel are encoded/decoded together. Compared with independent binary coding scheme, NB-LDPC coding scheme provides better bit-error-rate performance as shown by our simulation.

Abstract:Quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes with low-complexity hardware implementation and excellent performance have become a hot research topic in many optical communication systems. To meet the different requirements of code lengths in optical communication systems, lifting methods which remove all the short cycles equally are usually used to construct long QC-LDPC codes of larger lengths by lifting short QC-LDPC codes. A lifting method is proposed, which considers both length and connectivity of short cycles. The proposed lifting method reduces the complexity of calculating the approximated cycle extrinsic message degree -related metrics and improves connectivity of the Tanner graph. The numerical results prove that, by employing our proposed lifting method, the lifted long QC-LDPC codes have better bit error rate performance compared with the lifted codes employing the traditional lifting method. Abstract:In this study, an optimization model for offline scheduling policy of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is proposed to improve the decoding efficiency of the belief propagation (BP). The optimization model uses the number of messages passed (NMP) as a metric to evaluate complexity, and two metrics, average entropy (AE), and gap to maximum a posteriori (GAP), to evaluate BP decoding performance. Based on this model, an algorithm is proposed to optimize the scheduling sequence for reduced decoding complexity and superior performance compared to layered BP. We validated the proposed algorithm on LDPC codes constructed following 5G New Radio, which resulted in a reduction of decoding complexity of more than 20$\%$ compared to LBP.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an optimized belief propagation (OBP) based progressive edge-growth (PEG) method for constructing quasi-cyclic low density parity check (QC-LDPC) codes. In this proposed method, Tanner graphs are built by progressively appending the check nodes rather than the variable nodes. Moreover, this OBP-PEG method considers three new constraint conditions to select the QC-LDPC code sets constructed by the PEG method. Compared with the PEG-based QC-LDPC decoders, the proposed OBP-PEG decoders decrease the number of the input ports of check-node processer by up to 25%, accelerates the convergence speed by up to 11.7% in layered decoding process, and improves the success probability by up to ten times in constructing fast-convergence QC-LDPC codes.

Abstract:The direct-to-home satellite digital video broadcasting has been fast developed in the past decades, and the continuous phase modulation (CPM) is an alternative modulation scheme with the advantages of constant envelope and high spectral efficiency for the band-limited channel and non-linear amplifiers of the satellite transponder. In this paper, CPM cascaded with irregular low density parity check (LDPC) code is studied. A practical system model with global interleaving is proposed for the optimization of degree distribution of the LDPC codes, and code word design is obtained with a modified progressive edge-growth algorithm. Simulation results combined with theoretical analysis clarify the effect of signal-to-noise ratios and two important CPM parameters (modulation index h and correlation length L), providing guidance for system design. Simulation on bit error rate performance show the validity of the proposed algorithm. This paper systematically solves the optimal system design of cascade irregular LDPC-CPM and is of great significance for future satellite broadcasting.
Optimization of Finite-Length SC-LDPC for Uplink NOMA

Abstract:Due to lack of universality, the achievable channel parameter regions (ACPRs) of conventional channel codes are far from the outer boundary of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) channel capacity region. Spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes show excellent asymptotic performance and their ACPRs are able to approach the outer boundary of NOMA channels. However, the performance of finite-length SC-LDPC codes is not as excellent as its asymptotic counterpart. In this paper, a two-phase algorithm is proposed to construct capacity-approaching SC-LDPC codes with finite codeword length. By jointly optimizing the protograph, the spatial coupling length and the uncoupled code length, the performance loss of SC-LDPC code caused by finite codeword length is minimized. Simulation results show that the ACPR of the optimized SC-LDPC code is only 1.2 dB from the theoretical limit of NOMA channels when the codeword length is 9600.

Abstract:Iterative probabilistic decoding of binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes have been studied extensively. Non-binary LDPC codes have recently attracted an increasing attention. Most of the existing non-binary codes are built over GF(2(q)), and decoding methods developed for binary LDPC codes cannot be used directly with multilevel modulations. In this paper, we first extend the binary parity-check codes to the case with multiple symbols over modular arithmetic. Then, we develop a sum-product algorithm to decode this new type of codes at the symbol level. Finally, we propose an effective constellation mapping method for multilevel modulations. Error performances of this type of codes with 4-PAM, 4-PSK, and 16-PSK modulations over AWGN channels are provided. Compared with uncoded systems, the coding gain of a medium-size regular LDPC code of rate 8/9 with 4-PAM and 4-PSK modulations is about 5 dB. With 16-PSK and an appropriate constellation mapping at a code rate 3/4, the proposed code's performance is comparable to that of trellis codes.

Abstract:An approach for peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) reduction and security improvement in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical network (OFDM-PON) is proposed by using optimum block dividing with 2-dimensional logistic adjusted sine map (2D-LASM) and dynamic key assignment technique. One frame of OFDM signal can be regarded as a symbol matrix. All the divisors of length and width of matrix can be calculated out, and each divisor of length and width can be arbitrarily combined to divide the matrix into blocks. A 4D hyperchaotic system is applied to generate a cipher book for 2D-LASM. And we assign different dynamic key groups from the cipher book for 2D-LASM to encrypt different block dividing situations. Different encrypted divisor blocks can obtain different values of PAPR. The optimum dividing situation is obtained by calculating out the minimum value of PAPR (VPAPR). The values of optimum encryption signal (VPAPR-op), the original signal (VPAPR-or) and the optimization ratio (η) are gradually equal to 146, 269 and 1.82, respectively, with the number of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) symbols in each subcarrier increasing. Simulating 1000 sets of 120×200 QAM symbols, the distribution of η approximately meets the Rayleigh distribution and its central distribution is around 1.7. The processing time decreases with the number of QAM symbols increasing in each block. The performance of PAPR reduction is more than 3 dB between the secure optimum signal and the original signal. In addition, the hyper-threading technique with two algorithms is applied to improve the performance of the encryption method. They promote the processing time by 38.6% and 50%, respectively. Finally, a 22.06 Gb/s optimum encryption OFDM signal transmits through a back-to-back (BTB) system and a 25-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF). These experimental results verify that the proposed approach is a promising candidate for solving both of PAPR reduction and security improvement in access network systems.

Abstract:We, report a new approach to eliminate the extinction ratio (ER) limitation in a wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network using RZ-ASK/DPSK remodulation format corresponding to downstream/upstream signals, respectively. A model precoding method can improve the ER tolerance from 6 to 13 dB for a 40-Gb/s RZ-ASK downstream and 622-Mb/s DPSK upstream experimental transmission with <1 dB penalty. Rayleigh and stimulated Brillouin back-scattering effects are simulated and analyzed in the deployment of a bidirectional 40G Ethernet PON probably using ill practical application. Abstract:To support communications with extremely high mobility, both the delay-Doppler multicarrier (DDMC) modulation and low-density parity-check (LDPC) code can be adopted to enhance the reliability under doubly-selective channels. However, the detector and decoder for LDPC-DDMC systems are treated separately in prior investigations, which cannot fully exploit the joint sparsity brought by the delay-Doppler channel and parity-check matrix. To promote the performance and reduce the complexity further, the detector and decoder of LDPC-DDMC systems are connected in a factor graph as two modules in this letter. The parallel belief propagation (BP)-based approach is then proposed to establish the joint receiver design for LDPC-DDMC systems with low complexity. Simulation results verify that the proposed scheme enjoys better bit-error-rate (BER) performance compared with the separate design.
C-band PAM-4 signal transmission using soft-output MLSE and LDPC code

Abstract:We propose a DSP scheme with soft-output maximum likelihood sequence equalizer (sMLSE) and low-overhead (8.51%) low density parity check (LDPC) code for C-band PAM-4 transmission. In order to apply LDPC code in conjunction with MLSE, the conventional hard-output MLSE is modified to have a soft-output value by using the Max-log BCJR algorithm. The feasibility of this approach is experimentally investigated in a 56 Gb/s C-band PAM-4 system. In order to investigate the advantages of the proposed scheme, we compare the performance of the sMLSE-LDPC code to that of MLSE-RS code. Relatively, additional OSNR gain of 0.6 dB ~2.1 dB is achieved. The variation of the relative OSNR gain depends on the burst errors, which originate from the power fading effect. By using an interleaver that spreads burst errors in time, one can see that the relative OSNR gain is improved as 1.6 dB ~2.1 dB. Using the proposed scheme with the interleaver, one can see that the 30 km transmission of 56 Gb/s PAM-4 in the C-band was experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a general method for constructing irregular LDPC codes with midterm or short block lengths. It is a Monte-Carlo simulation based optimization procedure called Downhill Simplex which uses PEG (Progressive Edge Growth) method for Tanner graph construction in cost function evaluations. It outperforms DE (Density Evolution) method in both efficiency and performance. The efficiency of our proposal mostly depends on the Monte-Carlo simulation time which due to the midterm block lengths is relatively small compared to the time delay of conventional DE method. Simulation results show that for block length of 3200 and a relatively low code rate 3/8, LDPC codes constructed using our proposal noticeably outperform those constructed with DE method by more than 0.2dB in the entire SNR range under AWGN channel.

Abstract:The performance of LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) coding is very close to the Shannon limit with low practical decoding complexity. When LDPC codes are applied to OFDM, the bit error rate (BER) of OFDM in multi-path environments can be improved effectively. An iterative decoding algorithm for the LDPC-OFDM systems with MQAM/MPSK is proposed in this paper. It is shown from simulation that the proposed algorithm for LDPC-OFDM systems with multilevel modulation works correctly both in AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels.
Design and Efficient Hardware Implementation Schemes for Non-Quasi-cyclic LDPC Codes

Abstract:\ The design of a high-speed decoder using traditional partly parallel architecture for Non-Quasi-Cyclic (NQC) Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes is a challenging problem due to its high memory-block cost and low hardware utilization efficiency. In this paper, we present efficient hardware implementation schemes for NQC-LDPC codes. First, we propose an implementation-oriented construction scheme for NQC-LDPC codes to avoid memory-access conflict in the partly parallel decoder. Then, we propose a Modified Overlapped Message-Passing (MOMP) algorithm for the hardware implementation of NQC-LDPC codes. This algorithm doubles the hardware utilization efficiency and supports a higher degree of parallelism than that used in the Overlapped Message Passing (OMP) technique proposed in previous works. We also present single-core and multi-core decoder architectures in the proposed MOMP algorithm to reduce memory cost and improve circuit efficiency. Moreover, we introduce a technique called the cycle bus to further reduce the number of block RAMs in multi-core decoders. Using numerical examples, we show that, for a rate-2/3, length-15360 NQC-LDPC code with 8.43-dB coding gain for Binary Phase-Shift Keying (BPSK) in an Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel, the decoder with the proposed scheme achieves a 23.8%-52.6% reduction in logic utilization per Mbps and a 29.0%-90.0% reduction in message-memory bits per Mbps.

Abstract:With the development of the Internet and information technology, optical fiber communication systems need to meet people's information demand for large capacity and high speed. High-order phase modulation and channel multiplexing can improve the capacity and data rate of optical fiber communication systems, but they also bring the problem of bit error. To improve the transmission quality and reliability of optical fiber communication systems, forward error correction (FEC) coding techniques are commonly used, which serve as the fundamental approach to enhance the quality and reliability of fiber optic communication systems, ensuring that the received data remain accurate and reliable. The FEC in optical fiber communication systems is divided into three generations. The first generation FEC is mainly hard decision codewords, represented as RS code. The second generation FEC is mainly cascaded code, which stands for interleaved cascaded code. The third generation of FEC mainly refers to soft decision codes, which are represented as low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. As a kind of FEC, LDPC codes stand out as pivotal contributors in the field of optical communication and have gained remarkable attention due to exceptional error correction performance and low decoding complexity. Based on IEEE802.16e standard, LDPC code with specific code length and rate is compiled and simulated in MATLAB and VPItransmissionMaker 10.1 and successfully incorporated into polarization multiplexed differential quadrature phase shift keying (PM-DQPSK) coherent optical transmission system. The simulation results indicate that the bit error rate (BER) can be reduced to 10−3 when the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) reaches 14.2 dB, and the BER experiences a reduction by nearly three orders of magnitude when the OSNR is 17.2 dB. These findings underscore the efficacy of LDPC codes in significantly improving the performance of optical communication systems, particularly in scenarios demanding robust error correction capabilities. This study provides valuable, significant results regarding the potential of LDPC codes for enhancing the reliability of optical transmission in real-world applications.

Abstract:A novel construction method of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) code is proposed based on the finite field multiplicative group, which has easier construction, more flexible code-length code-rate adjustment and lower encoding/decoding complexity. Moreover, a regular QC-LDPC(5334,4962) code is constructed. The simulation results show that the constructed QC-LDPC(5334,4962) code can gain better error correction performance under the condition of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with iterative decoding sum-product algorithm (SPA). At the bit error rate (BER) of 10−6, the net coding gain (NCG) of the constructed QC-LDPC(5334,4962) code is 1.8 dB, 0.9 dB and 0.2 dB more than that of the classic RS(255,239) code in ITU-T G.975, the LDPC(32640,30592) code in ITU-T G.975.1 and the SCG-LDPC(3969,3720) code constructed by the random method, respectively. So it is more suitable for optical communication systems.
