Abstract:We demonstrate the selective coupling of a single quantum dot exciton spin state with the cavity mode in a quantum dot-micropillar cavity. By varying the external magnetic field, exciton spin states undergo Zeeman splitting and are coupled differently to the cavity due to field-induced spectral detuning. We found a threefold increase in the emission rate of spin-up excitons with respect to spin-down excitons at spectral resonance due to Purcell effect, which indicates the selective enhancement of light emission with specific polarization. A four-level rate equation model is developed and quantitatively agrees with our experimental data. Our results open new ways for future quantum light sources and quantum information processing applications.

Abstract:Using a novel two-pulse resonance fluorescence technique we demonstrate a Purcell factor of ~35 in a cavity quantum dot system. Highly coherent single photons are efficiently emitted into a waveguide, forming a near-ideal source for integrated quantum circuits.

Abstract:We have studied the coherent excitation of a strongly coupled QD/photonic crystal cavity system. Time-resolved reflectivity measurements show the vacuum Rabi oscillation of the dot in the cavity. Next, we considered the resonant driving of a cavity-detuned dot, which efficiently populates the cavity mode. This cavity-controlled read-out channel allows high-resolution single quantum dot spectroscopy. Autocorrelation measurements on the cavity mode show antibunching and suggest the use of the resonantly driven QD/cavity system as an on-demand source of single photons with potentially near-unity indistinguishability.

Abstract:We demonstrate the spin selective coupling of the exciton state with cavity mode in a single quantum dot (QD) micropillar cavity system. By tuning an external magnetic field, each spin polarized exciton state can be selectively coupled with the cavity mode due to the Zeeman effect. A significant enhancement of spontaneous emission rate of each spin state is achieved, giving rise to a tunable circular polarization degree from -90% to 93%. A four-level rate equation model is developed, and it agrees well with our experimental data. In addition, the coupling between photon mode and each exciton spin state is also achieved by varying temperature, demonstrating the full manipulation over the spin states in the QD-cavity system. Our results pave the way for the realization of future quantum light sources and the quantum information processing applications.

Abstract:We report on the study of CdSe quantum dot microcavity formed between two distributed Bragg reflectors （DBRs）.The active region consisting of CdSe quantum dots is embedded in PMMA.We use the transfer matrix method （TMM） to simulate the reflectivity spectrum of the microcavity.We demonstrate an enhancement of the spontaneous emission from the colloidal CdSe quantum dots in the microcavity.After embedding the QDs in the cavity,the full width at half maximum （FWHM） is narrowed to 7.5 nm compared with 27.9 nm of QDs in free space.The emission of the quantum dots is enhanced by a factor of 3.7 due to the microcavity effect.

Abstract:Resonant excitation is an essential tool in the development of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) for quantum information processing. One central challenge is to enable a transparent access to the QD signal without post-selection information loss. A viable path is through cavity enhancement, which has successfully lifted the resonantly scattered field strength over the laser background under \emph{weak} excitation. Here, we extend this success to the \emph{saturation} regime using a QD-micropillar device with a Purcell factor of 10.9 and an ultra-low background cavity reflectivity of just 0.0089. We achieve a signal to background ratio of 50 and an overall system responsivity of 3~\%, i.e., we detect on average 0.03 resonantly scattered single photons for every incident laser photon. Raising the excitation to the few-photon level, the QD response is brought into saturation where we observe the Mollow triplets as well as the associated cascade single photon emissions, without resort to any laser background rejection technique. Our work offers a new perspective toward QD cavity interface that is not restricted by the laser background.

We utilize a scalable lithography scheme leading to quantum dot-micropillar devices with 74% extraction efficiency. Abstract:We report optical positioning single quantum dots (QDs) in planar cavity with an average position uncertainty $<$20 nm using an optimized two-color photoluminescence imaging technique. We create single-photon sources based on these QDs in determined micropillar cavities. The brightness of the QD fluorescence is greatly enhanced on resonance with the fundamental mode of the cavity, leading to an high extraction efficiency of 68%$\pm$6% into a lens with numerical aperture of 0.65, and simultaneously exhibiting low multi-photon probability ($g^{2}(0)$=0.144$\pm$0.012) at this collection efficiency.

Abstract:We report on the observation of bright emission of single photons under pulsed resonance fluorescence conditions from a single quantum dot (QD) in a micropillar cavity. The brightness of the QD fluorescence is greatly enhanced via the coupling to the fundamental mode of a micropillar, allowing us to determine a single photon extraction efficiency of (20.7±0.8) % per linear polarization basis. This yields an overall extraction efficiency of (41.4±1.5) % in our device. We observe the first Rabi-oscillation in a weakly coupled quantum dot-micropillar system under coherent pulsed optical excitation, which enables us to deterministically populate the excited QD state. In this configuration, we probe the single photon statistics of the device yielding g^(2)(0)=0.072±0.011 at a QD-cavity detuning of 75 μeV.

Abstract:We demonstrate the control of the spontaneous emission rate of single InAs quantum dots embedded in a double-membrane photonic crystal cavity by the electromechanical tuning of the cavity resonance. Controlling the separation between the two membranes with an electrostatic field, we obtain the real-time spectral alignment of the cavity mode to the excitonic line and we observe an enhancement of the spontaneous emission rate at resonance. The cavity has been tuned over 13 nm without shifting the exciton energies. A spontaneous emission enhancement of ≈4.5 has been achieved with a coupling efficiency of the dot to the mode β≈92%.

Abstract:We study the optical properties of coupled quantum dot-microcavity systems with elliptical cross section. First, we develop an analytic model that describes the spectrum of the cavity modes that are split due to the reduced symmetry of the resonator. By coupling the QD emission to the polarized fundamental cavity modes, we observe the vectorial nature of the Purcell enhancement, which depends on the intrinsic polarization of the quantum dot and its relative alignment with respect to the cavity axis. The variable interaction strength of the QD with the polarized cavity modes leads to the observation of strong and weak coupling. Finally, we demonstrate the capability of elliptical micropillars to emit single and highly indistinguishable photons (visibility over 93 \%).

Abstract:We demonstrate purely resonant continuous-wave optical laser excitation to coherently prepare an excitonic state of a single semiconductor quantum dot (QDs) inside a high quality pillar microcavity. As a direct proof of QD resonance fluorescence, the evolution from a single emission line to the characteristic Mollow triplet10 is observed under increasing pump power. By controlled utilization of weak coupling between the emitter and the fundamental cavity mode through Purcell-enhancement of the radiative decay, a strong suppression of pure dephasing is achieved, which reflects in close to Fourier transform-limited and highly indistinguishable photons with a visibility contrast of 90%. Our experiments reveal the model-like character of the coupled QD-microcavity system as a promising source for the generation of ideal photons at the quantum limit. From a technological perspective, the vertical cavity symmetry -- with optional dynamic tunability -- provides strongly directed light emission which appears very desirable for future integrated emitter devices.

Abstract:Scalable photonic quantum technologies require on-demand single-photon sources with simultaneously high levels of purity, indistinguishability, and efficiency. These key features, however, have only been demonstrated separately in previous experiments. Here, by s-shell pulsed resonant excitation of a Purcell-enhanced quantum dot-micropillar system, we deterministically generate resonance fluorescence single photons which, at π pulse excitation, have an extraction efficiency of 66%, single-photon purity of 99.1%, and photon indistinguishability of 98.5%. Such a single-photon source for the first time combines the features of high efficiency and near-perfect levels of purity and indistinguishabilty, and thus opens the way to multiphoton experiments with semiconductor quantum dots.

Abstract:The implementation and engineering of bright and coherent solid state quantum light sources is key for the realization of both on chip and remote quantum networks. Despite tremendous efforts for more than 15 years, the combination of these two key prerequisites in a single, potentially scalable device is a major challenge. Here, we report on the observation of bright single photon emission generated via pulsed, resonance fluorescence conditions from a single quantum dot (QD) deterministically centered in a micropillar cavity device via cryogenic optical lithography. The brightness of the QD fluorescence is greatly enhanced on resonance with the fundamental mode of the pillar, leading to an overall device efficiency of η = (74 ± 4) % for a single photon emission as pure as g(2)(0) = 0.0092 ± 0.0004. The combination of large Purcell enhancement and resonant pumping conditions allows us to observe a two-photon wave packet overlap up to ν = (88 ± 3) %.

Abstract:We have demonstrated efficient production of triggered single photons by coupling a single semiconductor quantum dot to a three-dimensionally confined optical mode in a micropost microcavity. The efficiency of emitting single photons into a single-mode travelling wave is approximately 38%, which is nearly two orders of magnitude higher than for a quantum dot in bulk semiconductor material. At the same time, the probability of having more than one photon in a given pulse is reduced by a factor of seven as compared to light with Poissonian photon statistics.

Efficient out-coupling of high-purity single photons from a coherent quantum dot in a photonic-crystal cavity

Abstract:We demonstrate a single-photon collection efficiency of $(44.3\pm2.1)\%$ from a quantum dot in a low-Q mode of a photonic-crystal cavity with a single-photon purity of $g^{(2)}(0)=(4\pm5)\%$ recorded above the saturation power. The high efficiency is directly confirmed by detecting up to $962\pm46$ kilocounts per second on a single-photon detector on another quantum dot coupled to the cavity mode. The high collection efficiency is found to be broadband, as is explained by detailed numerical simulations. Cavity-enhanced efficient excitation of quantum dots is obtained through phonon-mediated excitation and under these conditions, single-photon indistinguishability measurements reveal long coherence times reaching $0.77\pm0.19$ ns in a weak-excitation regime. Our work demonstrates that photonic crystals provide a very promising platform for highly integrated generation of coherent single photons including the efficient out-coupling of the photons from the photonic chip.

Abstract:Combining resonant excitation with Purcell-enhanced single quantum dots (QDs) stands out as a prominent strategy for realizing high performance solid-state single photon sources. However, optimizing photon efficiency requires addressing challenges associated with effectively separating the excitation laser from QDs' emission. Traditionally, this involves polarization filtering, which limits the achievable polarization directions and the scalability of photonic states. In this study, we have successfully tackled this challenge by employing spatially-orthogonal resonant excitation of QDs, deterministically coupled to monolithic Fabry-Perot microcavities. Leveraging the membrane cavity structures, we have achieved filter-free single photon resonant fluorescence. The resulting source produces single photons with a simultaneous high extraction efficiency of 0.87, purity of 0.9045(4), and indistinguishability of 0.963(4).

Abstract:We show that resonance fluorescence, i.e. the resonant emission of a coherently driven two-level system, can be realized with a semiconductor quantum dot. The dot is embedded in a planar optical micro-cavity and excited in a wave-guide mode so as to discriminate its emission from residual laser scattering. The transition from the weak to the strong excitation regime is characterized by the emergence of oscillations in the first-order correlation function of the fluorescence, g(t), as measured by interferometry. The measurements correspond to a Mollow triplet with a Rabi splitting of up to 13.3 micro eV. Second-order-correlation measurements further confirm non-classical light emission.
