Abstract:The primary moisture source in building components is wind-driven rain (WDR), impacting the exterior wall materials and buildings' thermal and moisture properties. To promote China's sustainable building technology development, it is necessary to conduct an overall assessment of the long-term and extreme exposure of building components in various regions. Based on ArcGIS 10.4, the annual driving rain index (aDRI) and absolute spell index (IAS) values of 141 representative areas were interpolated and verified by the Co-Kriging method. The long-term and extreme exposure maps of wind-driven rain in various China regions were drawn. The two datasets were compared and analyzed after normalization. The results show that extreme and long-term wind-driven rain exposure is particularly severe in South China's coastal areas, which require particular attention. The exposure to wind-driven rain is gradually decreasing from the coast to the inland regions. More attention should be paid to building materials' durability for regions with severe long-term exposure, and the corresponding coating protection should be done for the building facade. The regions with high extreme exposure must pay more attention to the prevailing wind direction during rainstorms and make corresponding protective measures. In the design and maintenance of buildings in various regions, the two sets of wind-driven rain exposure maps are very complementary and worthy of attention.
