Urban Expansion Patterns of China and Their Impact on Ecological Land:A Comprehensive Analysis Based on GlobeLand30

Abstract:Since 2000, the urbanization rate of China has dramatically increased.Understanding the urban expansion patterns and their impact on urban ecological land is crucial to the sustainable development of China.In this paper, firstly the convex hull theory was applied to extract the boundaries of 320 cities in China from GlobeLand30 land cover products of 2000 and 2010.Then the regional differentiation of the cities with different sizes and expansion rates was analyzed.Finally, based on recognition of urban expansion patterns and characteristics analysis of urban ecological land, the paper revealed the correlation of urban expansion patterns with city sizes and expansion rates as well as the impact on urban ecological land.The results indicate that:1) There is significant spatial heterogeneity:urban expansion is the most dramatic in East China while relatively slow in South and Northeast China.2) There are both infilling and extension expansion patterns, which are characterized in different regions.The expansion pattern is weakly related to city size, but it is transformed to the extension pattern with the acceleration of city size and tends to be the mixed-up pattern while the city size increases to a certain extent.3) The urban ecological land is characterized by higher ratios in West and Central China, whereas lower ratios in Eastern China.In the smaller and faster-growing cities, infilling expansion pattern may result in occupation of ecological land;however, extended expansion may have the potential to avoid the impact on ecological land.
