Biomass Conversion and Biorefinery
Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass holds significant potential for biofuel and biochemical production. However, the high cost of lignocellulolytic enzymes needed for efficient saccharification poses a major obstacle. This review explores strategies, techniques, and tools tailored to enhance enzyme yields and productivity. It also delves into the classification of lignocellulolytic enzymes, offering valuable insights into the extensive spectrum of enzymes engaged in the breakdown of lignocellulosic biomass. Microorganisms are integral components of this bioprocess, encompassing both wild-type and recombinant strains, serving as indispensable hosts for enzyme production. The review focuses on productivity-enhancing strategies, encompassing batch, fed-batch, and continuous production modes. Furthermore, it explores various fermentation techniques, such as submerged fermentation, solid-state fermentation, and mixed culture fermentation, all of which play pivotal roles in elevating enzyme yield. The review also highlights the significance of genetic and metabolic engineering tools, process optimization, and downstream processing methods. These tools are essential for ensuring the quality and efficacy of the enzymes produced. Additionally, the article sheds light on the practical applications of cellulolytic enzymes, such as in biofuel production, textile dye decolorization, and waste management, food processing, etc. and offers insights into the current commercial producers within this field. Furthermore, it addresses the challenges inherent in lignocellulolytic enzyme production while offering a visionary perspective on the prospects of this dynamic field.
