Abstract:Nanostructured materials have emerged as very attractive electrode materials for energy storage due to their small sizes and structure/morphology-related properties. The purpose of this article is to provide a perspective to the materials community on the opportunities and limitations of nanostructured materials by highlighting examples in synthesis, fundamental studies and applications. Nanostructured silicon (Si) anodes together with other cathode and anode materials are used as examples to illustrate the different methods available for synthesis and the range of materials that can be produced to improve the storage capacity and stability. Recent progresses in using well-defined nanostructures to gain new fundamental understanding of the complex electrochemical reactions and charge-discharge processes are also discussed. Finally, the paper addresses some key problems that are yet to be solved and the need to optimize the microstructures and control the high level architectures beyond nanoscale.
