Abstract:We study the lattice approximations to the dynamical $\Phi^4_3$ model by paracontrolled distributions proposed in [GIP13]. We prove that the solutions to the lattice systems converge to the solution to the dynamical $\Phi_3^4$ model in probability, locally in time. The dynamical $\Phi_3^4$ model is not well defined in the classical sense. Renormalisation has to be performed in order to define the non-linear term. Formally, this renormalisation corresponds to adding an infinite mass term to the equation which leads to adding a drift term in the lattice systems.

Abstract:We present three-epoch polarimetric images of the quasar 3C 454.3 obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array at 22 and 43 GHz. 22 GHz polarized intensity images show a sudden change in the polarization structure of a bright eastern component (which we call the ``core,'' although it may be neither at the upstream end of the jet nor completely stationary) over a 41-day interval, coincident with the ejection of a new component from the core, as resolved in the corresponding 43 GHz images. This polarization outburst is also present at 43 GHz in both the core and the new component. This may represent a rapid change in the electric vector position angle of the ejected component from being orthogonal to almost parallel to that of the core. About seven months later, the new component, moving superluminally at 2.9 \pm 0.4 h^{-1} c$ (q_{\circ}=0.5) relative to the core and 3.9 \pm 0.4 h^{-1} c$ relative to a bright stationary component about 0.6 mas west of the core --- very low compared with previous measurements --- is found at 43 GHz to exhibit a further rotation of 90$^{\circ}$ in the orientation of its polarization. Opacity effects may account for the first rotation, but changes in the magnetic field of the component and/or that of the underlying jet in the inner milliarcsecond structure of 3C 454.3 are needed to account for the second. Polarized intensity images of the quasar 0420 - 014, used as a calibrator, are also presented. The polarization position angle of the core rotated between late 1994 and late 1996.

Abstract:A self-consistent renormalization group flow equation for the scalar lambda phi^4 theory is analyzed and compared with the local potential approximation. The two prescriptions coincide in the sharp cutoff limit but differ with a smooth cutoff. The dependence of the critical exponent nu on the smoothness parameter and the field of expansion is explored. An optimization scheme based on the minimum sensitivity principle is employed to ensure the most rapid convergence of nu with the level of polynomial truncation.

Abstract:Renormalization group theory is a powerful and intriguing technique with a wide range of applications. One of the main successes of renormalization group theory is the description of continuous phase transitions and the development of scaling theory. Most courses on phase transitions focus on scaling and critical exponents, while less attention is paid to universality, renormalization group flow, and the existence of a unique fixed point, which are the ultimate reasons why scaling theory is so effective in describing continuous phase transitions. We use a combination of Monte Carlo simulations and real space renormalization group theory to determine the renormalization group flow and to show the existence of a universal fixed point in the context of the ferromagnetic Ising model.

Abstract:We study the $3$-component $\phi^4$ model on the simple cubic lattice in presence of a cubic perturbation. To this end, we perform Monte Carlo simulations in conjunction with a finite size scaling analysis of the data. The analysis of the renormalization group (RG)-flow of a dimensionless quantity provides us with the accurate estimate $Y_4 - \omega_2 =0.00081(7)$ for the difference of the RG-eigenvalue $Y_4$ at the $O(3)$-symmetric fixed point and the correction exponent $\omega_2$ at the cubic fixed point. We determine an effective exponent $\nu_{eff}$ of the correlation length that depends on the strength of the breaking of the $O(3)$ symmetry. Field theory predicts that depending on the sign of the cubic perturbation, the RG-flow is attracted by the cubic fixed point, or runs to an ever increasing amplitude, indicating a fluctuation induced first order phase transition. We demonstrate directly the first order nature of the phase transition for a sufficiently strong breaking of the $O(3)$ symmetry. We obtain accurate results for the latent heat, the correlation length in the disordered phase at the transition temperature and the interface tension for interfaces between one of the ordered phases and the disordered phase. We study how these quantities scale with the RG-flow, allowing quantitative predictions for weaker breaking of the $O(3)$ symmetry.

Abstract:We formulate a Swendsen-Wang-like version of the geometric cluster algorithm. As an application, we study the hard-core lattice gas on the triangular lattice with the first- and second-neighbor exclusions. The data were first analyzed by finite-size scaling without including logarithmic corrections. We determine the critical chemical potential as mu(c) = 1.756 82(2) and the critical particle density as rho(c) = 0.180(4). From the Binder ratio Q and susceptibility chi, the thermal and magnetic exponents are estimated as y(t) = 1.51(1) approximate to 3/2 and y(h) = 1.8748(8) approximate to 15/8, respectively, while the analyses of energylike quantities yield y(t) ranging from 1.440(5) to 1.470(5). Nevertheless, the data for energylike quantities are also well described by theoretically predicted scaling formulas with logarithmic corrections and with exponent y(t) = 3/2. These results are very similar to the earlier study for the four-state Potts model on the square lattice [J. Stat. Phys. 88, 567 (1997)], and strongly support the general belief that the model is in the four-state Potts universality class. The dynamic scaling behavior of the Metropolis simulation and the combined method of the Metropolis and the geometric cluster algorithm is also studied; the former has a dynamic exponent z(int) approximate to 2.21 and the latter has z(int) approximate to 1.60.

Abstract:We have investigated the simple cubic Ising model by means of the Monte Carlo renormalization technique. The emphasis of our study concerns the influence of truncation, i.e. the dimensionality of the coupling subspace in which the analysis of the correlation functions generated by the Monte Carlo and spin blocking algorithms is performed. To this purpose we have included up to 36 even and 21 odd couplings in our analysis. We find that the increase in the number of couplings has a significant influence on the largest eigenvalues of the linearized renormalization transformation matrices. These eigenvalues serve to estimate the renormalization exponents yI and yH. Remarkably, we find no significant finite-size effect on these eigenvalues when the maximum number of couplings is included in the analysis, except for the smallest system sizes (83 → 43). After a suitable extrapolation to the fixed point, we find good agreement with existing results for the critical exponents. We have determined the critical point of the simple cubic Ising model as K = 0.221652(6), also in agreement with existing results.

Abstract:We investigate the phenomena of spontaneous symmetry breaking for phi(4) model on a square lattice in the parameter space by using the potential importance sampling method, which was proposed by Milchev, Heermann, and Binder [J. Stat. Phys. 44 (1986) 749]. The critical values of the parameters allow us to determine the phase diagram of the model. At the same time, some relevant quantities such as susceptibility and specific heat are also obtained.

Abstract:Competitions between different interactions in strongly correlated electron systems often lead to exotic phases. Renormalization group is one of the powerful techniques to analyze the competing interactions without presumed bias. It was recently shown that the renormalization group transformations to the one-loop order in many correlated electron systems are described by potential flows. Here we prove several rigorous theorems in the presence of renormalization-group potential and find the complete classification for the potential flows. In addition, we show that the relevant interactions blow up at the maximal scaling exponent of unity, explaining the puzzling power-law Ansatz found in previous studies. The above findings are of great importance in building up the hierarchy for relevant couplings and the complete classification for correlated ground states in the presence of generic interactions.

Abstract:We investigated the critical scaling and universality of the short-time dynamics for the spin models on the two-dimensional triangle lattices. By using the Monte Carlo simulations, the short-time dynamic scaling is verified, and the critical exponents theta, z and beta/upsilon are estimated from the power-law behavior of the magnetization, auto-correlation and second magnetic moment. Abstract:The tensor renormalization group attracts great attention as a new numerical method that is free of the sign problem. In addition to this striking feature, it also has an attractive aspect as a coarse-graining of space-time; the computational cost scales logarithmically with the space-time volume. This fact allows us to aggressively approach the thermodynamic limit. While taking this advantage, we study the critical coupling of the two dimensional $\phi^{4}$ theory on large and fine lattices. We present the numerical results along with the extrapolation procedure to the continuum limit and compare them with the previous ones by Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:We study the cubic fixed point for $N=3$ and $4$ by using finite size scaling applied to data obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of the $N$-component $\phi^4$ model on the simple cubic lattice. We generalize the idea of improved models to a two-parameter family of models. The two-parameter space is scanned for the point, where the amplitudes of the two leading corrections to scaling vanish. To this end, a dimensionless quantity is introduced that monitors the breaking of the $O(N)$-invariance. For $N=4$, we determine the correction exponents $\omega_1=0.763(24)$ and $\omega_2=0.082(5)$. In the case of $N=3$, we obtain $Y_4=0.0142(6)$ for the RG-exponent of the cubic perturbation at the $O(3)$-invariant fixed point, while the correction exponent $\omega_2=0.0133(8)$ at the cubic fixed point. Simulations close to the improved point result in the estimates $\nu=0.7202(7)$ and $\eta=0.0371(2)$ of the critical exponents of the cubic fixed point for $N=4$. For $N=3$, at the cubic fixed point, the $O(3)$-symmetry is only mildly broken and the critical exponents differ only by little from those of the $O(3)$-invariant fixed point. We find $-0.00001 \lessapprox \eta_{cubic}- \eta_{O(3)} \lessapprox 0.00007$ and $\nu_{cubic}-\nu_{O(3)} =-0.00061(10)$.

Reducing finite-size effects with reweighted renormalization group transformations

Abstract:We combine histogram reweighting techniques with the two-lattice matching Monte Carlo renormalization group method to conduct computationally efficient calculations of critical exponents on systems with moderately small lattice sizes. The approach, which relies on the construction of renormalization group mappings between two systems of identical lattice size to partially eliminate finite-size effects, and the use of histogram reweighting to obtain computationally efficient results in extended regions of parameter space, is utilized to explicitly determine the renormalized coupling parameters of the two-dimensional $\phi^{4}$ scalar field theory and to extract multiple critical exponents. We conclude by quantifying the computational benefits of the approach and discuss how reweighting opens up the opportunity to extend Monte Carlo renormalization group methods to systems with complex-valued actions.

The scheme, which derives from a variational principle, overcomes critical slowing down, by means of a bias potential that renders the coarse grained variables uncorrelated. Abstract:We use the stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo method to study the Heisenberg models on the square lattice with strong and weak couplings in the form of three different plaquette arrangements known as checkerboard models C$2\times2$, C$2\times4$ and C$4\times4$. The $a\times b$ here stands for the shape of plaquette consisting with spins connected by strong couplings. Through detailed analysis of finite-size scaling study, the critical point of C$2\times2$ model is improved as $g_{c}=0.548524(3)$ compared with previous studies with $g$ to be the ratio of weak and strong couplings in the models. For C$2\times4$ and C$4\times4$ we give $g_{c}=0.456978(2)$ and $0.314451(3)$. We also study the critical exponents $\nu$, $\eta$, and the universal property of Binder ratio to give further evidence that all quantum phase transitions in these three models are in the three-dimensional O(3) universality class. Furthermore, our fitting results show the importance of effective corrections in the scaling study of these models.

Abstract:The dynamical critical exponent of the two-dimensional spin-flip Ising model is evaluated by a Monte Carlo renormalization group method involving a transformation in time. The results agree very well with a finite-size scaling analysis performed on the same data. The value of $z = 2.13 \pm 0.01$ is obtained, which is consistent with most recent estimates.

Abstract:By introducing a chiral term into the Hamiltonian of the 3-state Potts model on a triangular lattice additional symmetries are achieved between the clockwise and anticlockwise states and the ferromagnetic state. This model is investigated using Monte Carlo methods. We investigate the full phase diagram and find evidence for a line tricritical points separating the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases.
