Abstract:The electron nuclear double resonance spectrum of both isotopes 151 Eu and 163 Eu has been measured in a single crystal of calcium fluoride containing about 0.01 % Eu 2+ . As the lines were narrow ( ~ 10kc/s) the hyperfine structure parameter and the nuclear g-value were measured to high precision giving the following values: A 151 = -102.9069±0.0013 Mc/s, A 153 = -45.6730±0.0025 Mc/s B 151 = -0.7855±0.0052 Mc/s, B 153 = -2.0294 ±0.0068 Mc/s, gI 151 = - 7.4969±0.0020 (x 10 -4 )β, gI 153 = - 3.3125±0.0030 (x 10 -4 )β. In order to fit the measured line positions to the spin Hamiltonian which is usually assumed for the system it was necessary to add small higher-order terms. The results of these measurements are compared with the precise atomic beam measurement on Eu.

Abstract:The isotope shift between singly-charged ^<151>Eu and ^<153>Eu in the 4f^7(^8S^o)6s^9S_4-4f^7(^8S^o)6p_1/2>(J=4) transition at 4129 A has been measured using fast ion beam-laser technique. This Eu line has attracted interest in connection with efforts of obtaining a cosmochronometer based on observed Th/Eu abundance ratios. Knowledge of the isotope shift is of importance in order to check that contaminations from line blends do not contribute to the line intensity of Eu II. The measured value of the isotope shift -0.1527(2) cm-1 (= -4578 MHz) is consistent with the old spectroscopic value of Krebs and Winkler -0.1503(25) cm-1 using a Fabry Perot interferometer, while the accuracy is improved substantially.

Abstract:The setup of the collinear fast ion-beam-laser spectroscopy (CFIBLS) with the Fabry-Prot interferometer is described and the method of analyzing the experimental data is given. The hyperfine structures of the transitions from metastable 4f 95d 7H 0 8 to excited states 4f 96p 3/2 (15/2, 3/2) for 159 TbII was measured by CFIBLS. For the high spectral (sub-Doppler) resolution of CFIBLS, the HFS constants A and B of the involved levels were obtained with small errors.

Abstract:The N=88 nucleus 151Eu has been studied by Coulomb excitation with 16O beams and from the decay of 151Gd using high-resolution gamma ray spectroscopy. A comprehensive level scheme including many new transitions, new levels and spin assignments is established. The results are compared with previous studies and with the predictions of a rotational-model calculation.

Abstract:The hyperfine structure (hfs) of three U-235 high-lying levels has been measured by using a hollow-cathode lamp and laser-induced fluorescence technique. These transitions are from the first excited states as 16900 and 16505 cm-1 to the higher excited states. From the measured spectra, the isotope shifts and hfs widths for these levels are determined, and the hfs constants A and B for two levels are obtained.

Abstract:The hyperfine structures of three second-step transitions (0 cm -1 ��16856 cm -1��34272 cm -1), (3010 cm -1 ��20082 cm -1 ��36853 cm -1), (3010 cm -1 ��20082 cm -1 ��37544 cm -1) in a La hollow cathode discharge lamp were measured by using laser fluorescence spectroscopy. The coefficients of 34272 cm -1, 36853 cm -1 levels have been calculated. Experimental setup was illustrated. The cathode is made of natural lanthanum with an 139La abundance of more than 99%. The discharge current is 10mA. Two Ar + lasers were employed for pumping two dye lasers. The experimental results were analyzed and given in this paper for the first time.

Abstract:The technique of employing resonantly enhanced Doppler-free two-photon excitation from either the ground state or a low-lying metastable state for precisely measuring the hyperfine structure of the atomic high-lying levels has been used, for the first time to our knowledge, to study La-139 I. By detecting the laser-induced fluorescence produced in a hollow-cathode discharge tube, one can measure a set of spectra for each two-photon transition line. The spectra are analyzed in detail and fitted to yield hyperfine structure constants. The A values of eight high-lying even-parity levels of La-139 I are then determined.

Abstract:In this paper, two different detection methods, photoionization and autoionization, are combined to study the spectrum of highly excited states of Eu atom. On the one hand, the bound Eu spectrum with odd-parity in the region of 43927-45010 cm(-1) has been measured. The spectral information, such as position and intensity, of 32 transitions can be deduced from the spectra with calibration and the error estimation. The information of excitation process and the selection rules enables us to determine their total angular momenta. Comparison with the related literature show that 12 of the states are newly discovered. On the other hand, we design an effective method to identify different types of highly excited states. The spectra of odd-parity states in the same region are measured by both photoionization and autoionization methods, from which we may separate the Rydberg states from the valence states. of the 32 transitions only 14 can be identified as Rydberg states, and the others are valence states. Furthermore, the effective quantum numbers of the Rydberg states are also discussed in detail with the quantum theory.

Abstract:We report the hyperfine splitting measurement of the 85Rb 5D5/2 state by electromagnetically induced transparency spectroscopy with high signal-to-noise ratio in the 85Rb 5S1/2-5P3/2-5D5/2 ladder-type system (m 780 nm + 776 nm). The frequency calibration is performed by employing a phase-type electro-optic modulator with a confocal Fabry-Perot cavity. From the measured hyperfine splittings among the manifolds of (F=5), (F=4) and (F=3) of the 85Rb 5D5/2 state, we determine the magnetic dipole hyperfine coupling constant (A= (-2.222 0.019) MHz) and the quadrupole coupling constant (B= (2.664 0.130) MHz) of 5D5/2 state of 85Rb atoms.

Abstract:We report the measurement of the hyperfine splitting in the $7D_{5/2}$ state of $^{133}$Cs using high resolution Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy enabled by precise frequency scans using an acousto-optic modulator. All the six hyperfine levels are resolved in our spectra. We determine the hyperfine coupling constants A = -1.70867(62) MHz and B = 0.050(14) MHz which represent over 20-times improvement in the precision of both A and B. Moreover, our measurement is sufficiently precise to put bounds on the value of the magnetic octupole coupling constant C = 0.4(1.4) kHz for the $7D_{5/2}$ state. We additionally report the measurement of ac Stark shift [-46 $\pm$ 4 Hz/(W/cm$^2$)], collisional shift and pressure broadening which are important for optical frequency standards based on the $6S_{1/2} \rightarrow 7D_{5/2}$ two-photon transition.

Abstract:We report measurements of the hyperfine coupling constant for the $8p \ ^2P_{1/2}$ level of atomic cesium, $^{133}$Cs, with a relative uncertainty of $\sim$0.019\%. Our result is $A = 42.933 \: (8)$ MHz, in good agreement with recent theoretical results. We also examine the hyperfine structure of the $8p \ ^2P_{3/2}$ state, and derive new values for the state energies of the $8p \ ^2P_{1/2}$ and $8p \ ^2P_{3/2}$ states of cesium.

Abstract:The ground-state spin coherence time of Eu-151(3+) in Y2SiO5 crystal in a critical magnetic field was extended to six hours in a recent work [Zhong et al. Nature 517, 177 (2015)], which paved the way for constructing quantum memory with long storage time. In order to select a three-level system for quantum memory applications, information about the excited-state energy level structures is required for optical pumping. In this work, we experimentally characterize the hyperfine interaction of the optically-excited state D-5(0) using Raman heterodyne detection of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The NMR spectra collected in 201 magnetic fields are well fitted. The results can be used to predict the energy level structures in any given magnetic field, thus enabling the design of optical pumping and three-level quantum memory in that field.
